Re: A Good Place to Start - Matthew (A) v Fokko (J) - Bottlenecks Mod

No need to apologize. I'm happy you're taking the time to do this AAR.

Well, I hope your opponent's lack of fervor is temporary. The slow progress might be discouraging.

Good luck!

Cheers,
CB

Re: Back and Better Than Ever Vettim 89(A) vs Greasylake(J)

Interesting stuff. Against Ironman Japan, I had to set up Abadan-Karachi (hoard fuel at Karachi), Karachi-Cape Town, Cape Town-Melbourne (or Adelaide or Albany or Perth) fuel convoys. When you lose a couple of eight-vessel tanker TFs near Christmas IO you learn quickly.

Anyway, good luck. Looks ...

Re: At dawn we slept...in the cab on the way back from Olongapo

I used to live in CA in Landscatter and Seal Beach in the late 80s when I was with McDonnell Douglas. Everything to do with autos and driving was corrupt back then: the smog testing ("Well, if we run this again, your hooptie just might pass, but it will cost double.") and traffic school to wipe your ...

Re: Back and Better Than Ever Vettim 89(A) vs Greasylake(J)

Regarding your pilots, usually the RAF ones are pretty good, or maybe I'm thinking of squadrons that appear in June or July 1942 from the Middle East. I try to get my fighter pilots to 50 EXP and 70 Air-to-Air and Defense before sending them to the front. For the USN, where you can lose a lot of ...

Re: A Good Place to Start - Matthew (A) v Fokko (J) - Bottlenecks Mod

The Vibrators were not too well liked by Corps pilots in real life, but in this game they are pretty good with their long range and ability to hit targets targets as well as Dauntlesses. They are great for staging long distances and hitting TFs without air cover. That said, once they hit a well ...

Re: Back and Better Than Ever Vettim 89(A) vs Greasylake(J)

Those KB cruises around SE Oz can really increase the pucker factor. At least you have some fighters there. Even with lousy EXP and AIR ratings they should be able to make it a bit painful for the IJN.

Re: Back and Better Than Ever Vettim 89(A) vs Greasylake(J)

Ouch regarding New Caledonia. I feel your pain.

I like to put an AV or AVD or whatever at one of the Channel Islands (off LA) to host a Kingfisher squadron on ASW. With a three hex radius, that covers the LA approaches pretty well.

Regarding the deployment of your AUS and UK divisions, is your ...

Re: Back and Better Than Ever Vettim 89(A) vs Greasylake(J)

Thanks for the AAR. I just started reading it today. I hope you don't mind if I give you hints now and then, which of course you are free to ignore as you know your opponent better than any of us.

So your opponent attacked the USSR last game in 1943? I'm guessing that didn't go well for him.

Is ...

Re: Sailing in harms way: InHarmsWay (J) vs Andav (A) Scen2

I'd say you should at least have some reserves ready to take Adak. That's a fantastic base, and let's face it, operations in the Aleutians in this game are not as deadly as real life. It wasn't a good Allied attack vector in WW2 due to horrible flying weather. In the game, the IJ player has to take ...

Re: Sailing in harms way: InHarmsWay (J) vs Andav (A) Scen2

Wow, great AAR. I spent about the last week reading it. On the plus side, there's no waiting to find out what happens next. On the negative side, there's no way to give advice or ask questions regarding a post that's a year old.

Now that I've caught up, I'm wondering how he supplies Gove (the base ...

Re: A Good Place to Start - Matthew (A) v Fokko (J) - Bottlenecks Mod

Well, it requires a house rule and some willing suspension of disbelief. Basically it is just a squadron of carrier-capable B-25 (without armour and less guns) which becomes available in April and withdraws after a couple weeks. Use it or lose it.The Allied player is allowed to use it exactly once ...

Re: A Good Place to Start - Matthew (A) v Fokko (J) - Bottlenecks Mod

Ah, the Doolittle Raid. I vaguely recall this mod covers it. What I don't remember is how it works and how it benefits the Allies. A brief explanation would be much appreciated.

Hahahahaha. Good stuff.

Years ago I worked for an aircraft manufacturer of which products happen to be prominently featured in this game. The go-to response to someone trying to blame you for a FUBAR'd situation was called the "Douglas Salute," which was crossed arms in front of your chest with ...

Bataan, Shimonoseki, Tsushima, Singapore... these are all ship graveyards. You have to be very careful in keeping your ships away from these straits when they are under enemy control. In the immortal words of Bill Clinton, "I feel your pain."

Re: Guadalcanal Invasion Question

Strictly from the point of view of would you take Lunga (defended by 6,000 troops) with those forces, I'd say yes (and don't land the combat engineers).

However, there's no mention of the bigger picture, such as what aircraft he has flying from what bases in theater. Also, do you have bases on ...
