Re: A Good Place to Start - Matthew (A) v Fokko (J) - Bottlenecks Mod

Quinton McHale in the PT boat leader database and Rockwell Torrey in the regular ship leader database make fine leaders in the same vein as Ted Striker and Blackadder. As a bonus, I just found that all four seasons of McHale's Navy are on YouTube. I haven't watched that show since the 70s. Time to ...

I only see sadness on that map.

Is NZ next? CONUS?

Re: SCR-270 Radar Won't Unload

Some Marine general: "We have 10,000 Marines on this island and we can't unload one gosh-darned radar set? Are we not men?"

I think someone tested it and 10 naval support will unload radar sets. Use a PBY squadron to fly in some naval support from one of those lettered units with 30 naval support ...

Re: Continuous Play

Sometimes I'll do AI vs. AI on continuous until June 1942 and then take over as the Allies. It makes for a more challenging game and you can focus mostly on offense from that point. The funny thing is you'll have a few CONUS perma-restricted units scattered around the map. Since they're still ...

I want to chime in saying I'll be reading this probably once a week. You have very enjoyable AARs and I wouldn't change the format. My only suggestion would be to keep the posting up even after the "happy time" is over, although I understand how your enthusiasm could wane.

By the way, have you ...

Did you manage to get all of the 147th on the Queen Mary, or did the dockside quartermaster find better uses for some of the motorized support?

Re: OT: Real Life Connections to War in the Pacific

No family connections, but I did dive Truk back in 1998 on a five-day live aboard trip. I personally dove 11 of the wrecks in Truk Lagoon. I've done the Bataan Death March route (in a car, fortunately) and been to quite a few of the "bases" that are on the map.

I was going to say you have to bleed the supplies at Karachi but you figured it out by the end of the paragraph. Hopefully the stockpile there is low.

Can't wait to see where you hit next. Could it be the ever elusive successful invasion of North America? The world wonders.

Re: Imperial Tide: DW (J) vs Nemo (A)

Crikey, so you've taken just about everything except the PI (although it looks like you have Mindanao). You've also taken most of the SE pacific. You've also already taken the Aleutians.

So that only leaves: SOV, OZ, NZ, and NA.

I think I might take out NA to Vancouver. You could strat bomb a ...

Re: Imperial Tide: DW (J) vs Nemo (A)

Wow! I think I saw Nemo's first post last fall and then forgot about this match. Obviously, you weren't impressed by Nemo's meta game (i.e. his usual psychological warfare outside the game) which has been the doom of other players. It's also great you found someone else to continue this.

Re: A Good Place to Start - Matthew (A) v Fokko (J) - Bottlenecks Mod

That is very interesting on the reported losses. Note the "Japanese Losses Today" and "Campaign" remain the same, indicating that those are probably 100% accurate numbers.

If I were your opponent, losing about 56 carrier Vals to get a few small vessels is a bad trade. I probably wouldn't try that ...

Re: Guidelines on when to repair ships

It depends on the situation. If you're playing a high tempo game, you'll even skip some upgrades. Your ships can manage several SYS and even some FLOT and ENG damage. The key is maintaining a minimum speed for the TF. If a vessel starts slowing down the TF, then put it in port. If a turret is ...

Re: Hearts of Iron 2

I set a lot of actions to "stop and notify" or whatever the terminology is. I get a new tech, play stops. I get attacked somewhere, play stops. I lose a leader, play stops. A new ship gets built, play stops. You get the idea. Then I just run the game as fast as possible.

To the original question ...

Re: LRCAP of naval ships with Army aircraft vs. Navy aircraft

My recollection is shore-based (regardless of navy or army) LR Capping of a CV TF that has its own CAP isn't very effective or efficient, but as far as I know, there's no malus for shore-based army birds (vs. navy or marine) LR Capping other types of TFs. It seems to work as well as you'd expect. On ...

Re: how capture island

A picture of your units would help. That said, did the units you landed have any assault value? They would need at least an AV of 1 to take an undefended base. They would also take it the turn after they landed for a non-atoll island, so you may see it next turn.

Re: New Public Beta - v1128 Live Now!

Ironman is a great stress reliever. I have a recently developed a right wrist problem, though, and that might be from this game and all its clicks. I don't think it's from the other thing people say your wrist might get used for. :D

I managed to land at Kurume in July 1945 and I'll either stop ...

Re: New Public Beta - v1128 Live Now!

I'm not sure about the kamis. I'm playing against Ironman Japan and 4% or even less seems likely for the hit rate. The invasion of Japan will result in 2000 or so IJ aircraft being shot down (the combat reports are too long to bother with counting kamis). I usually keep my carrier fighters at 90 ...
