RE: Uncommon Valor Allied Strategy

<t> G4M's was only in reference to IJN bombers. G3M's work just as well and they really don't have any other bomber types, do they? I also said that it's important to know, what piece of equipment can and can't do, but basing your strategy in arrival of certain plane types and ships is good way to ...

RE: Uncommon Valor Allied Strategy

<t> Everything is NOT down to equipment, no matter what you read in here. That is the numerical blindness I have been talking about. It's good to know what a piece of hardwere can and can't do, but talking like its preformance is everything you need to win is foolish. B-26's don't have range to do ...

RE: Uncommon Valor Allied Strategy

<t> Considering the range of Bettys and their reach from Guadalcanal and Gili Gili, is there something that can prevent losing both Noumea and Brisbane, if IJN is not stoped in mid 1942? And another question, is there any way to slow them down if, you don't keep your carriers near? <br/>

RE: Uncommon Valor Allied Strategy

<t> Thinking with this 'send them back to Pearl' is simple: Winning a carrier battle and that is too late. USN will lose the game, if they can't slow IJN down in '42. And you can't win carrier battle in first year. So what this number-doctrine does is send only units that can slow enemy down to win ...

RE: Uncommon Valor Allied Strategy

<t> Never really understood that 'Send them to Pearl'- doctrine. I understand that you send some DD's and SC's to get AA and ASW upgrades as nobody misses them what ever happens, but main armament when AA means so little? Why?<br/>

So you send Hornet and early carriers to Pearl and get what ...

RE: Uncommon Valor Allied Strategy

<t> One thing. Never ever send your carriers back to Pearl. There is allways the luck factor. <br/>
<br/>
In beginning IJN has two carriers and one light one in playing field (scen 17 and 19). What happens if one of the Kakus, Shokaku or Zuikaku runs into your s-boat sights and gets couple of Mk ...

RE: Mines

<t> I use sub layed minefields as part of my submarine warfare. Laying mines to suspected convoy lines, especially shallow/coastal hexes, forces supply convoys to change route after mines are detected. That way convoy routes can be limited to certain hexes and subs can be sent to hunt in these areas ...

RE: THE IMPERIAL JAPANESE DEATH STAR

<t> IJN carriers have a major weakness in replacement pool. They simply can't replace all lost Vals and Kates (scn 17 especially, but 19 also). Human opponent doesn't attack bases, so best option is getting IJN attack your battlewagons. Battleships are full of AA guns, generally attacked on sight by ...

RE: Galavanting Supply Convoys

<t> I have seen this too! Routine convoy running suplies and fuel from Townsville to Port Moresby worked fine, until I managed to take Lae. At this point AI in his infinite wisdom, decided Lae's overland supply route wasn't enough, and sent 25 ship convoy to Salomon Sea. Without aircover! I got 1 TK ...

RE: Night Bombing

<t> I think night bombing of Noumea and Brisbane are few things that can make it an intresting game. If those are removed, USN player has almost no intrest to fight tooth and nail on Guadalcanal and Gili Gili. Instead the game turns into 'IJN attacks in '42, USN attacks in '43'. This isn't ...

Brisbane and truk are the only safe ports on the map period! Betties, Nells, Hudsons and B17 and 24(flying from PM and Lunga) all have stupidly long ranges and night port attacks can be deadly.... and rather inconvinent...<SM sm="00000959.gif ...

RE: Carrier aircraft replacement

If really critical, you can send some of your CVL's back to Tokyo. Their planes will go to replacement pool and fill rest of your carriers to full squrdons. Also sending those slow useless targets, ie. Junyo-class, gives you few extra Vals and Kates to your REAL carriers attack wings.

RE: How do I stop B-17's?

<t> You don't win in air, but you might not lose war either. I have played numerous scenarios in Head-to-Head mode, so I do know what is possible. First, using single large airfield in B-17 range is sure way to lose lot of planes, but dispenced smaller fields allow just as deadly strafing runs and ...

RE: Army CAP

Aircobras, ie. P-39's and P-400's, don't have supercharger. Their preformance drops above 10'000 ft. Futhermore you open your base to low level fighter sweeps, where your planes are destroyed to field strafing Zeroes. Keep flexible, don't stick to single tactic.

RE: How do I stop B-17's?

<t> Zero doesn't have change against B-17 or indeed even B-25. It was built to have long range, so use it. Instead of wasting Zeroes to intercept incoming raids, launch low level (100 ft) sweeps to bases where bombers take-off. Spraying parked planes is much easier and with 100+ A6M you can do some ...

RE: Yikes! Now I'm completely lost.

<t> I can't help it. Tactic of Naval Search is so effective, that I don't bother using my 4-engines as bombers any more. They can make much more damage by attacking enemy shipping. I just cheked my AI- test game, in it I have 146 B-17's, avarage experience is around 90, squadrons have about 40 ...

<r> Standard Finnish Army stuff. Rk-92 (Modified AK-47, better sights and barrel), KvKK-62 (Modified VZ-59? Did I remember the type correctly?) Barrel wear is problem, as it can't be easily replaced. RE: Yikes! Now I'm completely lost.

<t> Here's a tip. Deploy your B-17's in northern Australia and set them to 100% naval search/ 6000 ft. Leave them there. After a month or so, you have accurate picture of EVERY IJN convoy moving around New Guinea. After two months, every day one or more enemy ships gets 500 lb bomb on it's deck ...

RE: Fighter Sweeps?

Every plane set to 100 ft, uses it's FOWARD firing weapons to strafe. More weapons, more damage. At least that is my experience on the issue. Especially effective models are B-25J and Beaufighter. Both have massive firepower firing foward.

RE: Difficulties with japanese forces

<t> I-121 class is real minelayer sub (three subs in class: I-121, I-122, I-123). Only little bug there, you don't see the mine as seperate weapon, but have to set the sub as sub minelayer and THEN refuel it at port and voilá: 164 mines. I-16 class is best IJN sub, as it has 8 foward tubes. 8 torp ...
