Don't know which game to buy.

Is this new offering significantly different from the original game(s)?

This is the bset game that I have played since I began wargames. I try not to look at the big stuff but the details are very well done and I will never stop playng WitP!

I received pre-release word of the patch from a friend who is reviewing the game for a publication. IIRC, it's not supposed to be in print until October.

Well, it depends on what you're are looking for. The game is unique in its GARGANTUAN scope and detail. Mostly, it appears to work and, IF you're an aficianado of WW2's Pacific Campaign, then YEAH, you've pretty much got to have it.
