Dateline Pearl Harbor:
DISASTER STRIKES THE US FLEET!!!!!!
In the darkest day for the US since the fall of Bataan the US fleet suffered a series of defeats.
At Midway, Japanese carriers raided the US Battlefleet again and scored more success this time around. The old and venerable USS Oregon was torpedoed 3 times and is heavily damaged. Navy officials state that she is not in danger of sinking but will be in the yards for quite some time. The other Battleships hit tended to shrug off the hits. But the Oregon is lost to the Battlefleet for some time - a critical weakness that could become crucial in the days ahead. Unlike the last raid, US fighters were present to fend off the marauding Jap aircraft. Reportedly the fighters destroyed one enemy aircraft and 4 others were lost to flak.
Meanwhile a cruiser squadron of the Asiatic fleet under French Command sortied against the Japanese fleet at Kiungahan. It was a disaster! The ineptly handled US Fleet lost 1 cruiser and 3 destroyers. They did manage to torpedo two Jap Battleships and sink a destroyer. . But the poor performance under French command has caused quite a diplomatic furor with Paris. The hundreds of US sailors who died in the action were thrown away needlessly by the arrogant French Commander.
Meanwhile the USS New Orleans and USS Pillsbury on patrol in the South China Sea encountered a Japanese Cruiser Squadron. The USS Pillsbury was sunk and the USS New Orleans sustained moderate damage

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
The disasters for the US Navy continue. The USS New Orleans retreating from its encounter with a Japanese Cruiser squadron was torpedoed today in the South China Sea.
The USS Chicago was torpedoed twice near Dutch Harbor and sank. Of the 409 crewmen only 20 were lost. The Chicago was built in 1889 and represented one of the oldest US ships still in active service.
Attached is the afteraction map for the carrier raid on Midway (7 Sept 1926). The Japanese carrier group was spotted several days prior to the attack, but it was hoped that the fighter cover would protect the fleet. This proved to be only marginally successful. Because of this mistake the USS Oregon will not be available for service for several months.

RE: 11 Sept 1926
I am surprised Oregon hasn't sunk.
In my game in a very similar setting 3 torpedoes was more than enough for its counterpart, IJN Mishishima.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
There was an inconclusive battle at Amchikita Island today as Battle Squadron 12 engaged a Japanese Cruiser squadron. In general the US forces showed poorly. There was only one 12" gun hit confirmed, most hits on the Jap cruisers were 3", 4" or 8" guns that were basically armor hits. The US destroyers faired poorly. Fully 50% of their torpedoes were expended without a single hit. In addition Scout Squadron 3, which was moving in tandem with Battle Squadron 12 failed to show up at the battle. There was some sort of communication error and the Squadron retired back to Dutch Harbor. Basically the US dented the armor of some Jap cruisers in return for 4 moderately damaged destroyers. Not a fair exchange nor will it be enough to halt the Japanese expansion in the Aleutian Islands.
The Japanese have captured Kiska and Amchikita Islands and are moving on Ogliuga Island today. If this advance continues the US may need to divert desperately needed ground forces from the Central Pacific. The govenor of Alaska is calling for 4 Marine Brigades to be sent to Alaska to protect Achorage. He is also demanding that the US send 8 Battleships and escorts to the theatre to ensure the safety of this vital territory. Navy officials refused to comment on these demands. Off the record a Navy Admiral referred to these demands as "outrageous and unlikely".
The USS Langley steaming on war patrol southwest of Wake Island encountered a Japanese tranport TF. They immediately launched an air attack and reportedly seriously damaged two cargo vessels.
The British announced today that the Far East Battle Division would be arriving in Singapore in 4 days and that convoy HK-113 was assembling in Singapore to move supplies to Hong Kong. This convoy should leave in the next several weeks.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
DISASTER STRIKES US FLEET!!!!!!!
In a report that is becoming depressingly standard the US Navy suffered a number of defeats today that will have long-reaching consequences on the war in the Pacific. More shipping was lost today, then in the entire history of the US Navy. 2 Armored cruisers, 1 light cruiser, 10 destroyers, 3 cargo ships and a tanker.
In simultaneous operations the Jap Battlefleet inflicted significant losses on the US fleet and more importantly stand poised to capture key terroritory that will both offer good defense in depth (Canton Island) and offer bases to raid into the US Coast (Dutch Harbor)
BATTLE OF DUTCH HARBOR:
Significant elements of the Japanese Battlefleet arrived unannounced at Dutch Harbor. They surprised Scout Squadron 3, based on the USS Cincinnati and destroyed the squadron and two transports unloading in the harbor. It is thought an invasion force is not far behind.
BATTLE of CANTON ISLAND
At least 6 Battleships from the Japanese Navy surprised Cruiser Squadron 35 at anchor at Canton Island. They evaded the US sub pickets and arrived unannounced. In the ensuing battle, the USS Charlotte, USS Frederick and 4 Destroyers were lost. A tanker and cargo vessel were also lost. The Japanese lost one 1 light cruiser. The US force had no chance of standing up to the superior firepower of the Japanese force. It is thought an invasion force is not far behind.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
CANTON ISLAND FALLS!!!!
Canton Island fell to Japanese forces which were landing in division strength. The Japanese overran the Marine defenders of the base force. Also present was the Southwest HQ command group which relocated here from Brisbane.
Reportedly the Japanese are landing on Dutch Harbor in division strength as well. A regiment from the 3rd Division is present and the Army officials are scrambling to find units to garrison Kodiak and Anchorage.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
Fighting continues today at Dutch Harbor. There is a massive Japanese fleet at Dutch Harbor covering the landing of what appears to be the 7th Division of the Japanese Army.
About the only thing going well is the defensive minefield put in at Dutch Harbor over the past several weeks. Numerous Japanese ships have struck mines over the past couple of days.
Meanwhile the Japanese forces near Canton Island appear to be launching a followup operation against Pago-Pago. Whether this is just a bombardment or full-scale invasion remains to be seen. What is clear is that the US presence in the South Pacific is at an end for the foreseable future.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
The battle for Dutch Harbor continues. Lt Col George S. Patton (yes that Patton) in command of the A Rgt 3rd Division issued a statement today that the fighting has been fierce, but that his boys were in good spirits and would win the day. The US Army is planning the response to the situation in the Aleutians. Unfortunately there are limited forces available. The protection of Pearl Harbor over-rides all other considerations.
The Japanese force at Dutch Harbor appears to be the 7th Division and indications are that an independent Brigade has landed as well.
The mines at Dutch Harbor have struck at least 8 ships and at least one transport has been sunk by mines and/or coastal gunfire.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
The battles at Dutch Harbor continue as the valiant A Regiment of the 3rd Division and the Marines of the Base force attack the Japanese landing at the harbor. So far it appears that the Japanese are consolidating their hold on the beach head and waiting additional reinforcements. Subs have scouted an additional troop transport convoy moving into the area.
Meanwhile the forces that captured Canton Island appear to be moving to the Southeast towards Pago-Pago. A Japanese sub was sighted at Pago-Pago, so it is believed that an invasion there may be imminent.
Officials of the War Deptartment are not saying what if anything they are doing to coutner these threats. One official off the record stated that the overriding priority was to defend Pearl Harbor, that ultimately neither Dutch Harbor or Canton Island was worth risking the battlefleet.
Meanwhile on the island of Hainan a massive Japanese Troop convoy has started landing troops at Taan. The end can not be far off for the Chinese garrison.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
The massive Japanese landing and attack at Taan continues. The Japanese army launched a furious assault on the Chinese defenses. They held, barely.
At Dutch Harbor enemy troops continue to flow ashore. LtCol Patton continues to have confidence that he can hold out until help arrives. Army officials, off the record, have indicated that there is very little in the way of help to send. The 2nd Infantry Division at Los Angeles could be sent, however, there is significant wrangling with the governor of California over its deployment (need political points). Apparently they are worried about an invasion of the California coast. Repeatedly Navy and Army officials point out that the defense of Pearl Harbor must take priority. There are just no troops that can be sent to relieve the forces at Dutch Harbor. The next avalaible formation, the 4th Infantry Division will not arrive for some 45+ days.
The expected invasion of Pago-Pago is taking place. It appears to be a landing in division strength. There is little hope that the Base force there can hold out long.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
Disaster upon disaster continue to pile up on the Allied cause. The city of Taan fell to the Japanese who collected in excess of 17,000 prisoners. One can only imagine what horrors these troops will face at the hands of the barbarians. With the fall of Taan the Japanese have taken control of the island of Hainan. With control of this island they have effectively cut off Haiphong and neutralized the Western Coast of China.
As expected the 20th Infantry division landed at Pago Pago and overran the US garrison there. The US presence in the South Pacific theatre has been effectively neutralized. With no viable bases here the US fleet is forced to fall back on Pearl Harbor.
The battle for Dutch Harbor continues to rage, however the Japanese are bringing in additional reinforcements. There is an indication of a second Independent brigade joining the fight. It is highly unlikely that the current garrison can stand for long. Military officials have indicated that the overriding priority is to make Pearl Harbor invulnerable from attack. Dutch Harbor is not considered of vital importance and with our limited resources there is not much that we can do there.
We are also hearing reports and rumors that perhaps the air attacks on the fleet at Midway were not as ineffective as previously reported. It is being widely rumored that at least one battleship was sunk and 4 or 5 others were heavily damaged. These are unconfirmed reports at the moment, but we will be investigating the situation.

MAJOR NAVAL BATTLE DUTCH HARBOR!!!
A major naval action was fought at Dutch Harbor today as major elements of the US Battle Fleet moved into Dutch Harbor to try to break up the Japanese landing force. Heavy losses were reported on both sides. Early indications are that the US lost 5 Battleships and 11 Destroyers. Initial Japanese losses are 3 Battleships, 6 cruisers, and 9 destroyers.
US forces are making temporary repairs and rearming in anticipation of a Japanese counter-stroke. Early indications are that this was not the decisive battle that the US had sought against the Japanese.
General McArthur, Chief of Staff had glowing praise for the the skill and bravery of US sailors and Marines at the battle. Meanwhile there are indications that several battleships and battlecruisers are preparing to depart the Atlantic fleet to make good the losses at Dutch Harbor.
This battle has radically changed the opinion that this would be short war. It is now clear that the campaign to defeat the Japanese Empire will take years and entail many hardships. Additional Auxillary Cruisers and Commerce Raiders have been laid down.
