Finally, note that RESPAWN STILL EXISTS. I need SOME carriers to accelerate if a ship gets lost and needs replacement.

I am under the impression that 9999 in the delay field in the empty slots would prevent the respawn from ocurring. Or do you intend to keep the feature?

Analysis indicated to me respawn is a vital feature we cannot get rid of unless WITP II gives us tens of thousands of slots. FYI the US Army operated more ships than the US Navy during WWII - more than 12,000 named ships not counting vast numbers of watercraft. This system is clever insofar as it uses respawn to recreate realistic numbers of US minesweepers, torpedo boats, sub chasers, etc in the forward areas as required. There is no feasible way to prevent respawn of major units if you leave ANY unused ship name slots. While some areas PREFER minesweepers, if a carrier is needed, and no carrier slot is open, it will appear in one of the "reserved" slots for something else. Or so it appears from the testimony of players with vast numbers of turns. I am afraid to tamper with respawn at this time, wishing to retain a functional mod. And I do not believe we will ever get rid of it in WITP I - unless you really think you could simulate with a few dozen minor but critical craft.
But we MIGHT get rid of carrier respawn.

Now for the record, I am not sure I agree with everyone this is a horrible rule. I think the US WOULD replace carriers - as it did - and any issue of timing could be fixed in code - or rationalized as a transfer from other areas or as an acceleration of another hull. Frankly the Allies lack the options in the game they really had - and it sort of helps compensate. Now if we only could simulate other theater events...

So you have 2 scenarios coming...missed that.

Correct.

They are almost identical, but capital ships, and associated aircraft, differ.

RHS 1941 Carrier Oriented Scenario is approximately scenario 15 or CHS 155 replicated with a modified set of aircraft, ships, air groups, land units, and production values. It is designed for those who believe that "historical" means ALL the changes that occurred to capital ship orders SHOULD be duplicated in the simulated world. That is, in particular, the lessons of the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway were implemented eactly as they were in real life, even if no such battles occur in the simulated game, or if they occur later in time (so there is not time to modify construction during the war).

RHS 1941 Battleship Oriented Scenario is a modification in which critical capital ships are NOT modified. The biggest (literally) example is that Shinano completes as a battleship instead of an aircraft carrier (unless cancelled, which Japan can - and should - do). Another example is that the CVL Ibuki completes as a heavy cruiser instead of an aircarft carrier (again, unless cancelled), and three Independence class carriers not ordered until after Midway complete as light cruisers instead. Actually more important - as this thread listing shows - is that the US planned to stop carrier construction at CV-21. Similarly, Japan planned to build fewer carriers, but to build two more modified Taihos - the G15 design.
Other changes are that the semi-carriers do not convert - they were post -Midway concepts. I personally believe that saddling both sides with their pre war and early war plans is more historical than what actually occurred, in most games.

In general, I believe in giving players choices. And in general, if I must choose, I will give you the option - which you are then free not to use if you don't like it. Too often that isn't possible, but where it is my motto is "power to the players."

In general, on what are you basing the arrival dates you will use for your USN CVs in your scenario? The reason I ask is that if you read histories of the individual Essex class you will find that there is often a difference of some months between the the date the ship was available for service, and the date when she first arrived at Pearl Harbor ready for duty.

The reason I ask is that if you read histories of the individual Essex class you will find that there is often a difference of some months between the the date the ship was available for service, and the date when she first arrived at Pearl Harbor ready for duty.

I base my arrival dates on the best available information, or on commissioning plus 90 days for CV and plus 60 days for CVE. But that is arrival in theater - not Pearl Harbor. So usually it is the date they leave San Francisco (or Aden) or whatever for Pacific Duty. This is often quite a bit later than in stock or CHS, but not uniformly so. For CVEs, CHS seems to almost always use commissioning dates.

Japan is different. You get the ship the day it commissions (unless there is a reason to think it should be later). This is because of practice. And because Japan may do desperate things. For example, training units were added to the OB (by CHS apparently), and when I investigated this, I confirmed they WERE used in combat - so I left them in - or revised them to be better named/equipped in a historical sense. It is not wise long term - if training units fight you have no replacements in future - but at some point you might want to do this. The US never has to fight for its survival, and we hardly can simulate every unit - even training carriers on Lake Michigan!

While a number of ships hulls (tankers and army troopships) were theoretically available for conversion which were identical to other ships actually in conversion, it is not feasible to do this work by the end of September 1945, nor to outfit them with air groups - so they were deleted. The case of Argentina Maru and Brazil Maru is different - if I cannot get them to convert properly I will probably make them available as troopships in BBO and carriers in CVO. Testing.

Japanese Carrier Revisions

Post by el cid again »

Since there is no way to disable code:

Chitose, Chiyoda, Ise and Hyuga options will remain the same for both RHSCVO and RHSBBO. However, it is questionable if the conversion of the semi-carrier/battleships should occur in BBO. But since it is an option in code, this is left to the players, who may govern it by a house rule, or not, in BBO.

Conversion of the Argentina Maru and Brazil Maru is not made consistent with the scenario philosophy: you get carriers in CVO and troop transports in BBO - but not both. This eliminates the problem of conversion time.

The special case is the Akitsu Maru and Nigitsu Maru class. These ships WILL generate their carrier air groups on schedule in 1944 (a rather protracted process - they get the ASW squadrons first) - wether or not they are upgraded! But if they are NOT upgraded to CVE type ships, they may not operate their air groups. Since they were always aircraft transports, this is not too strange. If you don't turn them into CVEs, just unload the planes in port (if you wish). If the ships are sunk before the squadrons appear, they will not appear at all.

Well since conversions for those four are slot related, you can simply move them away from slots 37, 38, 51 and 52 - then these conversions should not happen.

You could try to make interesting upgrades instead... lets say 4 AKs to APs 180 days upgrade beginning on some certain date by placing new class into class slots in stock held by CV Chitose and BBCV Ise...

If you understand how the code works, I am all ears. But as I understand it - and it says this loudly in the manual - don't mess with these slots. I think the new ships appear automatically - whatever you do - unless your primary ships fail to be at Osaka on the right date.
If there was a ship in that slot and it went to Osaka, it probably would convert to the code ship, whatever it was. Or so is my understanding.

The problem with my converting ships is the time delay is wrong. Also that I cannot be sure a player will do it - and the air group cannot safely be set date wise. I would love to have control over this process - and if we get it some day I will take your suggestions and implement them.

RE: USN CVE Analysis & Comment

Post by el cid again »

In general, on what are you basing the arrival dates you will use for your USN CVs in your scenario? The reason I ask is that if you read histories of the individual Essex class you will find that there is often a difference of some months between the the date the ship was available for service, and the date when she first arrived at Pearl Harbor ready for duty.

In general, if the PTO arrival date is given, I use that. If not, I usually use the date of PT operations minus transit time (typically two weeks) from San Francisco or Panama or Aden - or I use commissioning plus a fixed period (three months for an Essex, two months for a CVE - although this had increased to about 5.5 months by 1945 for Essex I don't change the standard). However, in a couple of special cases, I use no delay in the fall of 1945 - so they can get into the game. These ships have no air group and no experience! (having not worked up). The last two Iowas (in BBO) arrive at the beginning of September, also with no experience, just so they can be in the game (more or less for fun - because by 1945 - considering there are four worked up Iowas already - they don't matter a whole lot).

What are the WITP specifications of this class. And is there ship art for it?

These were light carriers built on Baltimore class hulls. Not conversions, but built that way from the start. Laid down in the latter half of 1944. Basically used as training carriers. Designed for 48 aircraft at a time when the concept was Essex class carriers as attack carriers working with Independence/Saipan class carriers as CAP carriers.

Oddly - they are not even AA guns - but "75mm SP guns" - SP = single purpose = NO AA capability!

OK - I am going to do a technical update - and this joins 4 other eratta I detected which will be in it.

Conway's says that they were MEANT to be built on Baltimore hulls, but that a brand new hull ended up being designed. Just putting that out there...
