Great stuff Larry, thanks.
How long does it take you to do each turn (Axis and Soviet)? I must admit to feeling slightly daunted looking at things like Fire in the East and other enormous scens.
I take more than the casual look at things of course, but having said that I must admit that it takes about four or five hours to do the Axis side and probably about 1/2 hour to do the Soviet side. It really depends on how "complex" the turn is, how many rounds there are, how many battles are going on, etc. If there are no battles at all and it's just movement of troops then it's relatively quick, it's the battles and the planning therefore that takes my time away from me I find.
I've gotten in the habit of moving everything to the extent of it's possibility and then entrenching it so that the movement points are zero, then when I look at the formation report and see that all movement points for that formation are zero I can skip it and move on to the next one without wasting time figuring out where to move them to, etc. Things like that make the turn go faster. Plus I have a checklist I go by to make sure I don't forget anything. Have you seen my checklist? Basically it's this:
(1) disembark everything embarked by rail ( do this once per turn )
(2) assign missions to aircraft prn ( a medical term meaning as necessary )
(3) repair the railroads if needed
(4) move any reinforcements for this turn, by rail if possible
(5) move any engineers to support positions ( to cross rivers, etc. )
(6) move everything except for the separate HQ's
(7) move the separate HQ's
(8) rince and repeat ( do steps 2 thro 7 for each round in each turn )
I move things in the order found in the order of battle and that's probably what takes the most time but that way nobody is overlooked, skipped, or neglected. So I usually end up going through the order of battle moving stuff at least twice. Each round.
I'm a micromanager...what can I say.
