Wow!
I just love that movie function... very kewl.
Can you host it at any image site? Do you post it to the site like a normal picture?
I notice you use imageshack, my account is with photobucket.
Ray (alias Lava)

I post stuff at imageshack, which you can find here:

http://imageshack.us/

because it's free. Problemo is that your images have to be 1024 Kb or smaller. There is no accounting or registration or anything....just post your picture and it'll give you the address of it so you can refer to it anywhere else. It's mega cool.

And the movie(s) are just GIF images appended together as separate frames of a movie and I use GIFanimator.exe to do that. If you don't have GIFanimator.exe just send me an email ( it's a large file ) and I'll send it to you with some instructions etc. I'm at larryfulkerson2002 at yahoo dot com

Nice AAR. Interesting reading as I'm playing a pbem game of the same scenario also as the Axis. Currently at Russian turn 4.
What I noticed from the pictures you post is that they are different from the screens I get. For example, the roads are light brown and not gray. The terrain is also crispier on your pictures then on my PC. Rail roads are clearer to see but I don't have red railroads when (I assume) they are broken. althoguh I'd love to as it is very difficult to see now.

So what do I need to do to have the same graphics in my game?

So um......what you need is the graphics mod I'm using. Just drop the files into your altgraphics directory and you'll have it. You can find the files at :

Here's the damaged railroad bmp files ( just rename the *.txt file *.zip and unzip it ):

It looks like the battle for Kiev is about to begin, but it might behoove the Axis to wait until the logistics are better, as each hex in the picture is in the single digits so far supply-wise:

Great stuff Larry, thanks.

How long does it take you to do each turn (Axis and Soviet)? I must admit to feeling slightly daunted looking at things like Fire in the East and other enormous scens.

I take more than the casual look at things of course, but having said that I must admit that it takes about four or five hours to do the Axis side and probably about 1/2 hour to do the Soviet side. It really depends on how "complex" the turn is, how many rounds there are, how many battles are going on, etc. If there are no battles at all and it's just movement of troops then it's relatively quick, it's the battles and the planning therefore that takes my time away from me I find.

I've gotten in the habit of moving everything to the extent of it's possibility and then entrenching it so that the movement points are zero, then when I look at the formation report and see that all movement points for that formation are zero I can skip it and move on to the next one without wasting time figuring out where to move them to, etc. Things like that make the turn go faster. Plus I have a checklist I go by to make sure I don't forget anything. Have you seen my checklist? Basically it's this:

(1) disembark everything embarked by rail ( do this once per turn )
(2) assign missions to aircraft prn ( a medical term meaning as necessary )
(3) repair the railroads if needed
(4) move any reinforcements for this turn, by rail if possible
(5) move any engineers to support positions ( to cross rivers, etc. )
(6) move everything except for the separate HQ's
(7) move the separate HQ's
(8) rince and repeat ( do steps 2 thro 7 for each round in each turn )

I move things in the order found in the order of battle and that's probably what takes the most time but that way nobody is overlooked, skipped, or neglected. So I usually end up going through the order of battle moving stuff at least twice. Each round.

I'm a micromanager...what can I say.

Axis Turn 8:

Post by larryfulkerson »

Here's part of the reason the turns take so long:

Image

It looks like the Soviets have more troops than the Axis but that's because the Soviets are mostly spread out one unit to a hex and the Axis stuff is mostly stacked four units ( or more ) to a hex. I'm planning on a front line roughly like this dashed green line and I'm going to have to repair a lot more railroads to make the supply a lot more tolerable before I embark on any front line smashing adventures:

Go Larry!!!

Tackling the biggest monster in this game (at least I think it is the largest?) For those of you who don't know this scenario is awesome and time consuming. I applaud anyone who attempts it as I think I cannot because I have the attention span of a small child[:D]
hey larry, looks like the russkies plan on defending Kiev (I think thats Kiev anyhow), any plan to send Guderian's panzer troops south to assist or you going straight for Moscow?--I always find it amazing how these games can model the historical developments so accurately[:)]

Hey that's a good idea! That way we could concentrate on 1/2 of the Soviet army at a time and not have to tackle the whole thing at once. Brilliant.
