OK… I guess I'll be the first one, and see if I get my foot bitten off.

I been modifying the Kharkov 43 scenario by Joao Lima that I got from Rugged Defense. I redid the Russian PO, moved and change theVPs to 200,made changes to the map, cut the turns in half from 94 to 47, change half days turn to full days turn, change the supply of some German and Russian formations, redeployed some formations and reinforcements. And some other things that I can’t remember right now. Basically learning how the editor works.

My question is should I post this scenario or keep it for myself. And if I post it how should I do it without offending anyone.

BTW the only reason why I pick this battle was because I'm interested in it.

As a simple courtesy, you should first try your utmost to get in touch with the original designer and get hold of his permission to use and modify his scenario (even if he has no legal right to it, it's understood).

Ditto what Nemo said. Joao Lima is active in the community I think so you should be able to find him.

Also, note that if you changed the time scale there are probably several other things you should change. Did you halve all the turn lengths in the event engine? Did you halve all replacement rates?

I agree with the basic point that scenarios should be clearly marked as PBEM only, Side 1 PO, Side 2 PO or Sides 1/2 PO. However, since string space in the scenario name is limited, and we have the new "HQ" scenario folder thing how about making separate folders for each type? Or perhaps top-level "PBEM Scenarios" and "PO-enabled Scenarios" folders which both then contain the existing folder structure. Due to wise usage of the standard Windows file selection dialog control, the level of nesting is not limited. You can have scenarios in any folder you like ...

What are the rules for modifying scenarios?
Getting into the arena and well behind, if only to support another brave lad and perhaps hold his toga, this could maybe use a separate thread.

Possibly- GreenDestiny and TheBloodyBucket (does it ever get emptied?)- in the scenario design section? I anxiously await your fates and assure you your bodies will be treated with the utmost dignity and respect. That is before they get torched. Valete.

I don't think anybody is going to die, remember: it's TOAW III, not Gladiator III [:D]

On a slightly more serious note, you'll find the various TOAW comunities out there pretty civilized and welcoming indeed, be it for advices and tips, discuss scenario designs or find opponents.

Vale!

Now now no-one. We all know our singulars from our plurals. [;)]

I think it is a good idea to start a thread like this in the scenario design section, so new players can discuss the rules of scenario design etiquette. A free-for-all if you like. That way aside from learning how to play TOAW, they will also learn to debate and argue. [:D]

So I'd say GreenDestiny and TheBloodyBucket (hopefully now primed for a refill), go for it! That's what forums are for. But I just warn you you will find the fencing very lively. Start out with a fairly innocuous question- something along the lines of 'how do I go about using someone else's scenario as a starting point for one I'm looking to build' and then run for cover.

OK, I just took a look at the Saddams Final Gamble scenario in the editor... the briefing says that it is PBEM only ... but the Iraqi side has all the formations with objectives and orders that look good ... so... it looks like this one will play just fine with the Iraqi side played by the PO.

What gives? Why does the briefing say it is PBEM only, yet the Iraqi side is fully scripted for the PO? Am I missing something?

I guess the take home message is that just because the scenario briefing says it is PBEM only, doesn't mean that it can't be played vs the PO.

I do hope you can make some kind of modification so it's obvious which are PBEM only. I found it frustrating to look at many scenario's and read that it's PBEM. And it seems that the majority are which is unfortunate as well as I prefer playing against the AI. PBEM usually takes too long. Also, not all the scenario descriptions have that it's PBEM up front. You have to sometimes read through a lot of description to get that out of it. Again, very frustrating, especially after it reads like a really neat scenario! I so wish someone could design one of the large WW1 or WW2 scenario's with the AI in mind. It seems a bit of a cop-out sometimes not to do so though I do appreciate that the largest ones would perhaps require more playtesting resources than you have available.

I'm glad you re-released this, TOAW has always been among my favorite computer wargames but I was a bit distressed to find so many PBEM-only scenario's. Is it possible to re-arrange the folders so your hierarchy starts with PBEM/Non-PBEM and then drills down? Something I guess I could do myself if you had a list of which are PBEM only.

In regards to Saddams Final Gambel having objectives and orders....

It could be somebody snuck them in there after the initial release, and didn't change the briefing.

It could be that the designer didn't think it was robust enough to warrant rating it PO enabled.

It could be that Saddam has a new hobby to while away the hours in that cell....

I hear that he's writing a novel about a deposed dictator who is restored to his throne.

There is a time and place for everything...even politics. However, now, and here in this forum, it is neither.

If we're going to argue about ****, let's argue about TOAW III.[:-]

Sorry, didn't mean for that to be political...[:(]

Back to the topic, it really wouldn't surprise me to find out that there are minor variations on some of the scenarios that have been out for awhile.  AFAIK, there isn't a way to "lock" a scenario, so if somebody wanted to change it and it got posted, unless it is noted in the breifing or by a title change, it would be hard to tell at first glance.

You'll probably find that the PO- even in TOAW III- isn't able to cope with the extremely lethal environment in that scenario. All that interdiction in particular.
