Palenberg totally devastated, small revenge at Brunei, Clark

Post by jeffs »

Very, Very nasty attack destroys 30 planes on the ground at Palenberg...
Given the size/composition of the attackers I am fairly surprised at the damage.
No two ways about it..I got reamed

A small stray wanders onto clark and pays the price!

Well needless to say, I withdrew as much as possible from Palenberg..many planes damaged...It seems rather effective given the composition and size of the attack.....

The minefield next to Palembank pays dividends...Would be nice if the Ayanami sinks..

As usual, the long lances ruin the party...That said, only 1 DD is in danger of sinking...
Repulse needs an overhaul badly(38 damage) but POW is in good shape exept for flooding. 2 turns in Batavia port should fix it (2-30-3)..... Am sending over some new CAs, CLs and some DDs....Takao eats a big shell but is only somewhat damaged...But 2 modern IJN DDs are gonzo.

I have a bunch of damaged ships? Where should I send them?

This might not be the best advice in the world, but here's what I do:

US ships end up in E Oz as the start of the 7th fleet, so damaged US ships I send to Sydney.

Brit ships go to Ceylon or Bombay. Diamond Harbor can be port attacked from Burma, so I don't send anything there.

There's 3 or so Dutch DDs with good AA, but short legs. I use these as escorts for Hermes, freeing up the Brit DDs for other duties. The other Dutch DDs go to Oz, as the ANZO navy is short on DDs. There's also 2 Aussie DDs in the DEI (the ones whose names start with "N") which I also send to the Sydney/Brisbane area.

The Dutch CLs, if not diving attractions, I send to wherever I think needs reinforcing. I might send 1 to Perth to have some sort of naval presence there.

You're kicking some ---- in the Phillipines. Do you have any resupply efforts underway? It sounds like you could make it a real nightmare for your opponent.

Thanks for the idea...

As for supply/resupply...
I have about 24,000 between Clark and Bataan (this does not include supplies with the units)..
I can not imagine getting much by on the surface as he has About 50 Nell/Betties in South Philipine bases...

Am thing of moving B-17s to China to do resupply....Also I want to use subs, but what size base is necessary. I tried to put supplies into subs at Kendari  and no supplies were put in....So I am pretty confused on that.

Betty dropping 800 KG bomb BULLSH@T

Post by jeffs »

Well the big news of the day was that POW (holed up in Batavia Harbor getting flooding down) got hit by
an 800 KG bomb dropped by a Betty.[:@][X(][:-]

That seems total BS...I know at PH the IJN used that bomb, but never after that...Damage went from 3 to 26...Totally bogus.

This is the bogus attack...My fighters were pretty mediocre (better than useless, but not much) but the

More BULLSH@T, Beauforts drop only bombs

Post by jeffs »

After the previous turn disaster of seeing 800 kg bombs on the POW, I was hoping for some
revenge via Beauforts...And I got it, but only a little. In spite of being with in (4 hexes ) of torpedo range,
my flyboys were only dropping bombs? What the hell is going on???

I did. The default is a torpedo. If long range then 2 x 250 kg bombs...I do
not see anything about an 800 KG....

Also, a couple of quick questions....

When do US divebombers get the good 1000 lb bomb?

How many Nells/Bettys can Japan at max production make a month?

Thanks.

the reason your planes dropped bombs was due to the level 3 base. You need min level 4 for 2E LBA to use normal loads, otherwise they use extended loads. In the newer version of the mod, the Beufort V does have bombs as the normal load.

I don't believe the USN Dive bombers ever default to the 100lb AP bomb device...its avail. is set to 12/41 though it should be oct 42.

Nell Betty production - depends on how much you tinker with your industry. I don't mess much with production so i don't know how far it can be tweaked.

RE: More BULLSH@T, Beauforts drop only bombs

ORIGINAL: jeffs

I thought at Midway the SBds used 1000 lb bombs....

They did, 1000lb General Purpose or more commonly termed "HE" (High explosive) bombs. They also used 500lb GP bombs. At war's start there were only a limited number of AP bombs, converted from 14inch battleship shells, but they were rare....Enterprise had some, but only enough for half a strike and their extreme weight (1600lb) would have required lighting the weight of the SBD's which could just barely lug one into the air. Prewar USN doctrine placed the heavy anti ship role on the torpedo squadrons. Later in the war (10/42ish) a dedicated purpose built 1000lb AP bomb was developed and deployed to US CV's but the GP bomb continued to be the mainstay because of it's greater utility. (useful against many ships with lighter armor....merchants and of course, ground targets)

Thanks...So in reality from 10/42 we should see the AP bomb (assuming the game was modeled correctly)? I assume in AV the SBDs are dropping AP bombs (by the way the rip up battleships other than the Yamato class).
