March 7, 42 - Soerbaja's final days...Manila's daily grind...

Post by treespider »

Today was relatively quiet compared to the past few days.

I launched a deliberate attack on Soerbaja which knocked the fort levels down. Soerbaja days are numbered.

And the daily pounding of Manila continues...although for the first time in memory there was no AA fire today. I plan on switching a number of aircraft to ground attack and hopefully disable some more units. In addition I have three more artillery units, two more engineer regiments, and a command HQ setting up shop. I've also pulled three of my divisions out of the line for some R&R. In about a week I plan on launching another assault....

March 9, 42 - Soerabaja succumbs...

Post by treespider »

March 8- March 9, 1942

Japan occupied a number of Allied bases these two days but the biggie was:

03/09/42
Ground combat at Soerabaja
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 100646 troops, 750 guns, 169 vehicles, Assault Value = 1866
Defending force 26503 troops, 166 guns, 11 vehicles, Assault Value = 357
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 1
Japanese max assault: 3232 - adjusted assault: 2451
Allied max defense: 330 - adjusted defense: 427
Japanese assault odds: 5 to 1 (fort level 1)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Soerabaja base !!!
Japanese ground losses:
1571 casualties reported
Guns lost 26
Vehicles lost 2
Allied ground losses:
34795 casualties reported
Guns lost 167
Vehicles lost 3

David also left Baker Isl undefended, so I sent a unit to occupy it as well...this actually took place on March 7, but I think I overlooked adding it to the AAR.

03/07/42
Ground combat at Baker Island
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 284 troops, 3 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 11
Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1
Japanese assault odds: 18 to 1 (fort level 0)

March 10-12, 42 - Mopping up...

Post by treespider »

March 10-12

The last few days have been relatively quiet...I've captured a few of the bases I bypassed in the SRA and in and around Rabaul. I've also ordered my seaplane base on Andaman Island to conduct long range recon flights of the east coast of India. I've also ordered long range recon flights in the South Pacific.

On March 10 - Japanese forces CAPTURE Memboro base !!!

On March 11 - Japanese forces CAPTURE Nauru Island base !!!

On March 12 - Japanese forces CAPTURE Kiriwina Island base !!! Japanese forces CAPTURE San Jose base !!!

There will probably be an extended lull in this game as I plan for my next big adventure. David seems to be inviting me to invade Northern Oz. He has drawn down his forces in Darwin dramtically since the air battle a short while ago...

At this point in time I am seriously torn as to where to proceed...here are my thoughts on different approaches -

India -
I know a number of players prefer to invade India. My only concern with pursuing this option is that I have not inflicted any serious loss on the US carriers. If I sail to India I will leave the Pacific open to raids by the American carrier fleet.

Australia -
I was leaning towards an invasion of Northern Oz. However after reviewing bases and ranges Kendari is at the extreme limit of the B-17. In addition most of Timor is outside the range of US fighter planes until the arrival of the P-38. I think I may make Timor into a fortress festooned with AA guns. I haven't ruled out the invasion yet as I still have time. Now that I have PM and Lae well on its way to becoming a major base I figure if invade it will deny the use of the bases to David and if he wants to try to retake them he has a nice long march over land or a nice long sail either from Perth or past PM.

New Caledonia/ New Zealand -

What do I gain? David can still sail to New Zealand if I go after Noumea. However if i can take Noumea on the cheap I might consider it....now if I can get my recon flights to fly from Lunga...

Samoa/Fiji -

Taking these bases may put a serious crimp in the US counterattack... Problem is distance.

Line Islands -

Probably dificult to hold onto but would defintely interdict movement between Hawaii and the South Pacific.

Hawaii -

Yeah Right.

Alaska -

No threat to David.

The real Japanese faced the same problem !

The IJA chose to declare victory and schedule return of units to China, Home Islands, Manchuria in preparation for offensives in China and war against Russia.

But had IJN had schemes for (more or less) each of your above options, their problem was they needed IJA and IJA would not agree.

In the game, it probably helps if you've planned for one or more of these options from the start, then you'd have some divisions with prep points already in hand.

If you've picked an opponent who will sit on their hands (as some have !) while the Japanese go after India, then that is viable, but you have to pick the right opponent. If you pick one who will fight where you're not, then your fears are justified.

But in the game, as in the war, beating the Americans would seem to be the priority. And as I.Y. tried to do, if you can beat their existing carriers, then you can delay their counterattack (he hoped long enough for the polilticians to make peace). But you need to come up with something (like ah Midway !?) that will force him to fight. Constructing a better battlefield than Midway would be indicated though. An area you can cover with some landbased air.

The other consideration is Northern Oz is too easy to supply in stock (the fantasy rail road), so the Darwin based counter attack is a highway to the SRA in the game.

So, first question is will your opponent sit around and do nothing while you attack India, if so then this may be viable and will remove one "front" from you defense later.

If not, then can you take Darwin and hold for a year ? If so, then you shut down the a-historical comeback via this route.

And then arguably the most useful approach is to try to draw out and defeat the American carriers, but again, can you find a suitable spot and will your opponent play.

You have one advantage over your historical counterparts, you can ensure IJA agreement !!! So at least that aspect is easier !

And you also know the US is reading your mail....

That is a huge advantage.

Urban Hexes - Stalingrad in the Pacific

Post by treespider »

March 18, 1942 - Manila

Well my testing has paid off!!! I now realize you can not defeat a force behind level 5 forts in an urban hex.
- It does not matter how many consecutive days you bomb the airfields and ports...
- It does not matter how many consecutive days you bombard them...
- It does not matter how many engineers you bring in ( I had five regiments)...
- It may matter that none of the 15 or so bomber units from 4 seperate airfields that you've assigned to ground attack did not fly...
- It does not matter how good your commanders are...
- Nor does it matter that your units are Prepped to 100...

So long as the defender has enough troops in the hex he will always resist...

So how do you defeat such a force...you sit back and bomb and bombard it into the stone age for a week ...then launch a deliberate attack to kill more troops which will not be replaced....then wash rinse and repeat...for the next two months...and hopefully at some point the defender will be reduced to such a point that you actually cut some barbed wire...

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 164385 troops, 1112 guns, 174 vehicles, Assault Value = 2683

Defending force 61027 troops, 576 guns, 191 vehicles, Assault Value = 1476

Japanese max assault: 2653 - adjusted assault: 1370

Allied max defense: 1406 - adjusted defense: 3345

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 5)

Japanese ground losses:
4015 casualties reported
Guns lost 82
Vehicles lost 12

Allied ground losses:
1572 casualties reported
Guns lost 33

I feel that a Japanese player has to divide the Allies into different areas that are NOT mutually supporting. For this cut the Burma road to China and break China and India into two different zones. By taking SRA/DEI, Australia is cut off from India except by convoys along the map edge. The other would be taking South Pacific and New Zealand and cutting off the USA from reinforcing Australia.
Thus, the Allies have four zones that are not connected and you have interior lines of communication (quicker response times). It "may" force him to to bring out his CV's to defend and if not going up to Canton Island would make any eventual counter attack restricted to known axis.
You have the invasion bonus only for a short time longer and the Zero bonus is going away, so make hay while the light is shining. [:D]

Accomplished. For whatever reason David completely abandoned Burma and allowed me to walk all the way to Myit. and Lashio before I had to fight any one. By doing this i beat the Chinese to these bases by a few days.
By taking SRA/DEI, Australia is cut off from India except by convoys along the map edge.

I only have a handful of bases left to mop up - the south coast and extreme western end of Sumatra, as well as Samarinda. Dili on Timor is now under attack and should rapidly fall once i have supplies in place for the units.
The other would be taking South Pacific and New Zealand and cutting off the USA from reinforcing Australia.

New Zealand may be a bit ambitous for my tastes. The problem from here out is how to reinforce any move should it prove to be more challenging than you have planned for.
Thus, the Allies have four zones that are not connected and you have interior lines of communication (quicker response times). It "may" force him to to bring out his CV's to defend and if not going up to Canton Island would make any eventual counter attack restricted to known axis.

Bringing out his CV's is the big question...so far he has been very good about hitting me where I'm not...except for one time when I seriously dropped the ball and nearly got kicked myself. If it were not for the presence of a strong cap I would have been in some serious hurt.

At the moment I think his CV's are at or near Canton Island. One thing I've learned is to try not to operate your CV's without land based search support, unless you have overwhelming strength---which IMO I do not have. Currently I have two CV's that are hovering around 10 system damage that is not coming down. So I have sent them home, in the hope that the larger repair yards will help. I also have a CVL with 35 system damage from an encounter off of Northern Australia. I would prefer it if my CV's were at 5 or below.
You have the invasion bonus only for a short time longer and the Zero bonus is going away, so make hay while the light is shining. [:D]

I am aware of the fading Zero Bonus...I'm not so concerned about the Invasion Bonus. Much as the historical Japanese I have acheived many of my pre-war goals, much earlier than I anticipated. I am now preparing for one, and possible two more adventures. I am confident in the succes of the first, and fully expect the second to develop into a donnybrook. However before they get started, as I have said, I am repairing system damage, training up some pilots, and generally getting my rear areas in order. If I move out before I have a solid foundation from which to operate, David's counterthrust will be even more telling.

The Assault Value continues to drop with each attack...3/21 was actually a bigger bombardment day with 923 guns but inflicted fewer casualties than the attack on 3/22. Next turn I launch my next Deliberate Assault, after having rested my units on the 22nd. So from March 18 through March 22 I reduced the strength of Manila from 1476 to 1395, a 5.5% reduction in raw strength.

Meanwhile in the rest of the world my hundreds of TFs continue to ply their trade moving the forces of the Empire to where they are needed.

The defenders Assault Value between my last attack and this attack are significant lower...and his casualties continue to mount without replacements. For the first time in about a half dozen assaults the fortification level was reduced... I may have Manila by the historical date of May 6. My forces also suffered less disruption in this attack although I plan on sticking to my previously discussed sequence of Rest everyone but the Artillery, Bombard everyone, Rest All but the Artillery, Deliberate Assault.

Mar 24-Mar 27 - The Crack Widens

Post by treespider »

My new routine seems to be paying some very nice dividends - Manila is definitely on its last legs as my last attack demonstrates -

03/27/42
Ground combat at Manila
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 172723 troops, 1014 guns, 165 vehicles, Assault Value = 2577
Defending force 53486 troops, 383 guns, 162 vehicles, Assault Value = 1299
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3
Japanese max assault: 2533 - adjusted assault: 975
Allied max defense: 1060 - adjusted defense: 701
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 3)
Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 3
Japanese ground losses:
6015 casualties reported
Guns lost 55
Vehicles lost 7
Allied ground losses:
1303 casualties reported
Guns lost 37
Vehicles lost 5

Yes I took a lot of casualties but most of these are disablemenst which get repaired because of the abdunant supply I have available. What is more important is the defender's AV which is now somewhere less than 701....a 30% reduction in less than a week. I give Manila two-three more weeks tops.

Elsewhere in the Pacific I am more than likely about to lose the CS Nisshin after its foray to Christmas Island. I am currently in the process of running the gauntlet of US twin engine bombers flying from Johnston Island and Palmyra. I fully expect to see an American CV show up shortly and dispatch the lucky ship...if i didn't launch hair-brained raids like this what fun would David be having now anyway.

I have initiated a major offensive on Hengchow ...and may have caught David by surprise! When I came in I ordered my units to bombard instead of launching a Deliberate Attack. on the other hand instead of sitting tight behind behind the city walls David launched an Attack which failed. Now i intend to try and take advantage of his increased disruption and will launch my attack....I'm curious what the result will be...

A bug's life...

Post by treespider »

Mar 28, 1942

Witnessed the coming and going of a hated bug - the disappearing unit. I had a fast transport set to pick up a unit. Unbeknownst to me if the Fast Transport contains a ship with a float plane you have bad juju if you try to pick up a unit...it will disappear. Luckily I found the bug right off the bat and David and I corrected it....so onwards we march.

My counterattack at Hengchow was not as successful as it could have been, but all in all I did reduce the fortifications and reduced the forts from level 7 to level 6. My units were in good enough order after the attack that I ordered a continuation of activities...

03/28/42

Japanese ground losses:

Allied ground losses:

What should be of more concern to David is the movement up the Canton-Hengchow highway of a sizable Japanese force including no fewer than three tank regiments. On last check David only had 6 units at Kweilin, (perhaps I will be able to bag an army afterall)

In Burma we have a moderate to low grade air battle taking place with Allied air raids of several japanese bases...I am defending one or two of these bases with Long range cap. I probably will not make a serious effort to contest the airspace here until I have built the infrastructure up ...which I am in the process of doing.

Samarinda and Benklopen both fell today leaving just two bases in western Sumatra and two bases in the Phillipines besides Manila to clean up.

Curiously my naval air search has detected a number of small TF plying through the waters of Northern Australia...However my airgroups have deemed they are not worthy of their attention and let them pass unmolested...perhaps they were important enough for David to cover with longrange cap and that is why i didn't fly...hmm[&:]

The adventures of CS Nisshin appear to be over as I have retreated to safer waters----that was fun[8|][;)]

And at my favorite location -

Defending force 51432 troops, 328 guns, 156 vehicles, Assault Value = 1222
Allied ground losses:
111 casualties reported

David's Assault value now stands at 1222 after the latest cycle of attacks...as the cycle starts anew.

Mar 29-30 - Truce in China

Post by treespider »

Mar 29-30 -

I have agreed to let David retreat unmolested from Southeast China. His units were stuck on 59 miles after trying to retreat from Hengchow. I believe the problem stemmed from the structure of the transportation network in this area. A railine departs Hengchow to the southwest, two hexes away the railine intersects another line that runs northwest into Kweilin. The problem (IMO)stems from this intersection and the intervening hex. The intervening hex does not connect to the hex to its North or Northwest except via a cross country link. When i occupied the intersection it invalidated David's movement orders and for whatever reason the game would not resest the orders for the units. Perhaps it was because I was two hexes away and the path to the intervening railline hex was still open. In any event I have agreed to cease my attacks at Hengchow and ordered my units to move to Changsha to afford david the opportunity to withdraw from Hengchow. My units to the southwest however will arrive in Kweilin the next day, however I will not attack as David has agreed to withdraw from the southeast bases. In general my attacks at Hengchow have all been succesful...David's assault the first day really hurt him in terms of combat effectiveness in my opinion...here are the last two days at Hengchow... In vboth attacks the Japanese inclicted more casualties on the chinese than they themselves received in spite of the level 5 forts....

RE: Mar 29-30 - Manila's decline...

Post by treespider »

Mar 30- Manila

My next Deliberate Assault has reduced the forts even further...Manila's days are truly numbered. Although David may be trying to bring in supplies viz sub it may simply be a case of too little too late...SS Pickerel was caught by an ASW Patrol flown by Lily's on the 28th and then suffered two more bomb hits the following day in the daily port attack that Manila receives. Since this assault actually achieved 2:1 odds, I think after this next cycle I may entertain a Shock Attack and attempt to end the suffering.

I have read in other AAR's where people continue to shock attack before they are anywhere near the necessary odds for achieving victory...IMO they are only allowing their opponent to inflict needless casualties on them.

Mar 31, 1942 - China Truce???

Post by treespider »

March 31, 1942 - I have offered David a truce in China, on the ground, until April 1, 1944 in exchange for the base at Homan. My next area of conccentration was going to be Homan, Yenen and Sian.

Otherwise this turn was fairly quiet...I forgot to stand down my bombardments outside of Homan and a couple of Recon missions and my units completed the movement to Kweilin.

At Manila I forgot to stand down one unit who launched a deliberate attack by itself which obviously failed...

In northern Australia David has brought in some single ship convoys...I launched a sweep at Wyndham and Recon missions at Darwin as well as an Airstrike at Darwin that targeted an Ak for no effect... The Recon didn't seem to indicate any additional units were brought in so I am not exactly sure what he is up to...perhaps a supply mission or loading resources that were delivered to Northern Oz from the SRA....hmm???

Nome also expanded its airfield and Port on March 30, 1942. Perhaps David is preparing for a Northern Attack aimed directly at the Home Islands. What sort of defensive options are available to the Japanese here??? Maybe I need to take Dutch Harbor or some of the other Aleutian Islands. He has an airbase in operation in the western islands but I think its probably just an AVD like he had a Funafati...which has returned...

As significant as these events were - my testing of the ground combat system final reaped its rewards and resulted in an important milestone. As I calculated last turn a Shock attack applied at the appropriate moment finished the siege of Manila:

Ground combat at Manila
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 153595 troops, 963 guns, 164 vehicles, Assault Value = 2236
Defending force 48384 troops, 273 guns, 144 vehicles, Assault Value = 1159
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 1
Japanese max assault: 3973 - adjusted assault: 2482
Allied max defense: 970 - adjusted defense: 453
Japanese assault odds: 5 to 1 (fort level 1)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Manila base !!!
Japanese ground losses:
5798 casualties reported
Guns lost 28
Vehicles lost 10
Allied ground losses:
81202 casualties reported
Guns lost 212
Vehicles lost 98

I have now freed up a very significant force that I can redeploy elsewhere the question remains where???

April 3-4, 1942 - Keep your opponent guessing!

Post by treespider »

April 3-4, 1942 - I saw where David's headline read 'Northern Oz Under Attack' or some such...it's always good to keep your opponent guessing. [;)]

Actually the rest of the map has been very quiet with the exception of an unopposed B-17 raid over Mandalay.

04/04/42
Day Air attack on Mandalay , at 33,30
Allied aircraft
P-40B Tomahawk x 5
B-17E Fortress x 37
Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 9 damaged
Japanese ground losses:
43 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 29

David's planes came in at 5000 feet yet my AA units only damage nine planes...c'est la guerre. At some point I plan on actually contesting the airspace in Burma...probably after Northern Oz comes under my control.

On April 3 the 2nd Parachute regiment started to land on Derby. L2D2 Tabby's flying from Koepang suffered at the hands of the Base force AA that was present and the landing did not go smoothly. Howvever the troopers will not have to wait long as reinforcements should be unloading within the next 48 hours.

My various BB' TF continued to pound Wyndham, Darwin and Derby and are supported by land based air flying from Timor and Kendari.

I lost two MSW's and a DD took a bomb all of whom were escorting the troopships.

04/03/42
Day Air attack on TF at 24,79
Allied aircraft
Hudson I x 3
No Allied losses
Japanese Ships
DD Yudachi, Bomb hits 1, on fire

04/04/42
Sub attack at 26,81
Japanese Ships
MSW Tasei Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Kongo Maru #2
MSW Hinode Maru #20
Allied Ships
SS S-37

04/04/42
Sub attack at 26,82
Japanese Ships
MSW Hinode Maru #20, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Kongo Maru #2
Allied Ships
SS KXIII

It appears as if David is not going to contest Northern Australia at this time.

April 5-6, 1942 - Northern Australia

The invasion of Australia has already cost me several ships and will probably cost me several more. The landings were quite bloody as well. Good thing that David didn't really contest the landings or it could have been much worse.
