ny59giants,

Yes, that's the plan. Over the next few days the Japanese Brigade at Nanning will be attacked and eliminated while a slow withdrawal from Bangkok will also take place. No need to get decisively committed and let him Shock Attack + Pursue me all the way up the railway line to Rahaeng.

US CVs. 2 CVs have just finished sinking about 6 Japanese tankers from the KB replenishment convoy. Another CV and a BB are hanging around and it is planned that all of these forces will rendezvous on 17th December 1941 before forming into 3 x CV TFs and covering the 2nd phase of my northern operations.

Mogami,
Suicide? Perhaps but suicide with gain. As such, justifiable.

As to the "house rules" you mentioned. These are identical ( except for the one dealing with the specifics of Indian in April 1942) in both of my games so my opponent has no restrictions on movement of forces from Kwantung, no restriction on where he could land on the first turn, no restriction on number of port attacks, no restriction on what he wants to do in China, no need to capture Singapore before moving on to India etc. What was fair for me as Japan is fair, IMO, for those playing Japan against me.

As to the losses. Yes, they are heavy. Allied forces have lost 550 planes so far ( 230 or so on the ground). Japanese losses total 299 planes with less than ten of these being ground losses. These pilot losses won't make much of a difference yet but it is a fairly significant draw-down of Japanese pilots... one of my strategic objectives.

Well, well, well the Japanese prove daring and ran three surface combat TFs to within 60 miles of Singapore in order to raid my evacuation convoys. Losses were very high, approximately, 3 to 4,000 men but with over 30,000 men already succesfully evacuated and the pace of evacuation increasing all the time I'm not about to stop now.

The naval bombardment of Balikpapan was unexpected. It appears that a significant amphibious invasion may be on the cards. The Prince of Wales battlegroup has been positioned so as to be able to react quickly should such an invasion occur. The PoW battlegroup comprises 1x BB, 1 x BC, 3 x CA, 4 x CL, 2 x CLAAA and 10 DDs. It should be sufficient to cause some serious damage to any invasion force. Of course the optimal Japanese course is to march to Balikpapan by an overland route but it would be slower than an amphibious invasion and the Japanese definitely seem to be trying to maximise their operational tempo ( as they should).

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Excellent. I will press this advantage and leave the Japanese with 1 less Brigade to utilise in action against my forces...

The aerial defence of Singapore has pretty much been worn down to nothingness but it has finally collapsed on the day that my evacuations are almost completed. A total of about 50,000 men should escape Malaysia.

Below you can see the situation in southern Borneo. I managed to get 2 of the Australian Defence Bns into Kendari before the Japanese bombardment TF arrived and have positioned a strong Royal navy TF to intervene if a major amhibious assault develops at Balikpapan. Samarinda is to be evacuated. In addition I have begun basing the Do-24 squadrons at various small bases and setting them to night naval attack in an effort to discomfit the Japanese player. My submarine cordon is proving rather ineffective but so long as it is present it may still score.

Things are still going well. For every 3 ships the Allies lose the Japanese are losing 2. At this stage of the war that's a pretty good exchange rate IMO.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clearly a bug - it's a well known fact that Boise is unsinkable!

Joking aside, one would think that she would be able to handle a few CL's & DD's in a daylight engagement. I can only presume she was grieviously wounded by Nagato and friends on the 14th?

Where's the Any key?

Yeah. She had gotten hit by many 8 inch and possible a few BB shells. Ah well, c'est la guerre... I expect to get some payback for this over the next few days. The Japanese have made the mistake of falling into a pattern. I intend to try to wreak some advantage from this.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/17/41

The main news for this day is that the transports were ordered to continue pushing into and out of Singapore. Losses were, inevitably, heavy but by the end of the day over 38,000 troops have currently been transported to Palembang and only 20,000 remain on the Malaysian peninsula.

So far so good. Losses are heavy but most of the re-deployment of forces has been accomplished. Aerial forces are still a bit weak but overall the shape of a strong Javan and Sumatran defence has been delineated.

I like to convert those 8 plane squadrons of Hudson's to Beauforts. [:D][:D]   It allows you to expand those Hudson squadrons out and give you some needed offensive punch.
They are deadly if a non-AC TF gets within 4 hexes of them (without LRCAP). They are the best anti-ship weapon for the Allies until the Avengers in 7/42. I like to get those Hudsons over from Ambonia to Kendari to convert (enough supplies to do so) and then back over to act like a deterrent. But it looks like this will not be possible in your game.

P.S. Where are those American CV's??[&:]

Hi, Nemo please promise me a future game. Because I really want to test my style of play versus yours. You mention we come from different schools.  I reject all operational plans that fail against a specific enemy response.  (If I know how to defeat my plan I assume the enemy also knows and reject the plan) As a result I appear timid and slow to many. However very few operations I approve fail. And I usally achive my strategic goals.

I would say I was the last person a risk taker wanted to encounter.

Nemo,
Promise me and other fans that "when" you take up Mogami on his offer it is at least on the extended map and preferably using the Nik Mod with CHS. [&o][&o]
That would be a very good AAR to read. [:D]

So, can you two start by the weekend??[;)]

Hi, Since I intend on playing Japan there is no need for extended maps.  I've already spent 20+ hours on my turn 1.

I am not proposing a "grudge" match. I am eager for opposing schools of thought on the strategic level to engage. Nemo states he lives to be on the edge and take risks while I only adopt a course of action after I deem it "sound" By sound I mean the enemy has very few options and most of these are "forced" I refuse to undertake any operation where I clearly see the enemy has the time and means to defeat it.

All military actions carry with them a certain inheret risk. But I seek to minimize this while Nemo seeks out operations that might yield large returns if everything works out as he desires.

I mean no disrespect to Nemo or his opponents. But I really would like to see what resulted from two opposite schools of thought encountering each other.
There would be no Japanese AV unless Nemo provided the points. (I always accept Japanese AV so be warned in advance if it occurs game is over. Game is over the instant either party has the required ratios.)

I think NikMod is problematic.  It fixes some problems but in so doing creates, many, many others and introduces the need for more house rules and results in more flawed combat results ( just flawed in a different way). If I have a choice between two flawed game variants then I'll stick with the flawed stock variant ( that's just a personal preference). I posted a statistical analysis of this some time ago and the findings were rather stark for Japan. In short there may be more leakers but that probably doesn't result in any more hits than normal ( in my analysis it actually resulted in significantly fewer hits and quite unrealistic strike results.

Mogami,
You play for points autovictory, declare it at any point in time that the required points ratio is reached ( as opposed to waiting till the end of the year which is how the game is designed)? Hmm, seems mighty gamey to me ;). Seriously, when a DD is worth the same as 5 or 6 planes you have to question the "points" system massively.

But I seek to minimize this while Nemo seeks out operations that might yield large returns if everything works out as he desires.

Not quite correct but, yes, I enjoy those sorts of operations. That, however, doesn't mean I'm locked into only performing them.

As to the game "house rules" etc... Well, I don't think either you or I should have the right to dictate them to our opponent. Meeting somewhere in the middle seems reasonable to me.... For example, I think that if you want to play for auto-victory on points ( which I think is the ultimate in gamey) then I would insist that said calculation occur only at the end of the year ( which is when the game was designed for it to occur)... otherwise one is gifting the Japanese player a rather significant advantage as it is quite easy to gain more than 4:1 at some point early in 1942 with nothing but extremely conservative play... For example, at the beginning of February 1942 if I had just moved on from Manilla to Singapore I would have ended up with something like 3,000 Allied points vs 15,000 Allied points ( quite easily) and declared auto-victory and I wouldn't have had to undertake any but the most certain of operations. I think that stopping the game the instant auto-victory is achieved plays very much in the favour of a player who wants to maximise initial advantages in the presence of perfect intelligence but then chooses not to undertake operations as the intel becomes less reliable ( and the risk increases). In any case the game design is to calculate points ratios on December 31st 1942 and I suggest that we stick with the game design on this issue. If I wanted to get an auto-victory on points using your rule I'm quite confident I would be able to do so no later than 1st February 1942 ( without any significant Pacific invasions as they just divert resources from Malaysia/Singapore and DEI where the Japanese player can rack up immense numbers of points at an extremely favourable ratio). I'm sure you can do precisely the same almost irrespective of the opposition...

Furthermore I would argue that one can't really test one style of play against another in a 7 to 8 week lightning campaign in which one strikes the other whilst in the posession of significant strategic and operational surprise and many crucial advantages ( zero bonus, disorganised enemy forces, poorly deployed enemy forces etc). Now, a 13 month campaign begins to give one the ability to properly evaluate two styles of play as there is time for the initially surprised side to redeploy, re-organise and begin to do more than just always reacting to crises.

Maybe we can start a separate thread for this house rule discussion as I would prefer not to clutter this AAR with extraneous material?

ny59giants,
I would prefer not to use Nikmo as I've been on the record, previously, as feeling that it is seriously flawed... although its use WOULD benefit me in early 1942 if I were playing as Allies. Still it isn't about deriving benefit. It is about trying to use the least flawed combat model and I don't think NikMod meets that requirement.

As to extended map and CHS... I'm open to those if Mogami wants them to be used... I have never seen either but I'm sure there will be no problems in adapting to them if they are chosen as the fields of battle.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/18/41

Today, unfortunately, neither of my Royal Navy strike groups made contact with the enemy surface groups they were targetted at. On the other hand losses continue to be acceptable, the Assault Value of troops at Palembang has now passed 600 and I managed a nice surface strike off Rabaul.

This Japanese force is nearing Palembang. I think that the Japanese plan to bombard Palembang to destroy the large number of planes and transports there. These have, consequently, been ordered to escape at best speed while the Revenge TF is ordered to make for Palembang at best speed.

Over time as more torpedo-bombers become available the vulnerability of CAs and BBs should increase.

I tried a Shock Attack at Naga just on the off chance it would let me get rid of a Japanese landing force. No such luck but things are looking pretty good at Manilla. I doubt I'll get level 9 forts, I don't have sufficient supplies present to achieve that, but there'll be enough to slow the Japanese for another little while and buy time for the DEI and Burma.

Tomorrow there's a fair chance of a carrier action if the Japanese carriers make for Dutch Harbour. They should be very low on fuel so it would be very risky to try for Dutch harbour but he must know my carriers are in the area and probably low on fuel ( the reason two of them are making for Dutch Harbour).

Well, we'll see how it goes. I've brought additional bombers and fighters in from CONUSA to bolster the aerial threat in the region and help fend the japanese off if they do attack.

Well, that's that settled then.

Hi, I don't try for AV as Japan. I don't care about ratios before AV dates trigger game ending. When game says "game over" game over.  It will be an Allied victory or else the Allied player has lost everything in the Pacific (I don't mean his bases)

And yes you should dictate house rules to your opponent and he should dictate his back. Make sure you find opponents who agree to your kind of war. (saves a lot of trouble)

ORIGINAL: Mogami

I'd like the exploit type of game if the map was symetrical and both sides had the exact same starting array of units. (Then the player best able to plan Operations and economise force would have the advantage) I don't like playing calculators who study the starting deployments and reinforcement schedules and use these as the foundation for their war plans. I'm still hoping to find someone who will do the work of entering both players starting deployments in a free deployment game.
I would volunteer modifying the latest version of CHS - nothing major like Iron Storm, just shuffling around some LCUs and TFs at game start so that both sides don't know the exact starting OOB of the enemy. Those modifications would not be random, though, more like some slightly changed priorities for both sides at game start. Let me know if you two are interested. [:)]

Nice ambush at Rabaul!! That battle should make him think twice about future commitments and that buys you time which you need.

Is BB Nagato actually confirmed sunk?

A carrier action this early? [;)] ...I guess it is not that bad of an idea since you get those ships back early if everything goes down badly.

Hi Nemo,

I am Jutland13 other PBEM, we are up to Dec 25th, It is my first PBEM so he is doing better then yours, I have lost Yunan ( I attacked then he bounced me out also my reserves were not there, lessoned learned), And at Changsa he bounced me out nw hex with river. Other then that he is following similar patterns. I won't give any hints away as I believe that isn't proper, he seems very capable. I have defended Singapore, and I sent my CV's to rabaul to hit his force (they took rabaul the same turn as arrival, but I did damage some ships, and sunk cl,dd at least).
Therefore it will be interesting to see how the two games diverge.

p.s. I was aggressive with POW and Repulse, sunk 9 ap, 4dd, on second raid Bettys hit them hard, and his surface fleet hunted and killed them, I also lost 2 bb at pearl.

Best of Luck
Showa rules!

Well, the key to Allied CV success this early in the war lie, IMO, in optimising the context within such an engagement occurs. The Northern Area of operations tends to disrupt air operations ( lessening the effectiveness of both sides... something which tends to reduce the Japanese overmatch), carriers which have moved more than 4 hexes fly fewer air ops ( so I will try to tempt the Japanese into doing just that), the presence of Allied LBA should help somewhat... especially in polishing off cripples... and sacrificing a few ships in order to increase Japanese fatigue should help.

Lastly, once battle is joined the Allies will definitely lose one carrier group but since KB will be operating en masse shouldn't expect to do more than cause damage to a few Japanese CVs. Still, IMO, swapping an Allied CV for damage sufficient to port a couple of Japanese CVs for a few months is a good swap as it will limit the Japanese ability to swamp my operations in the Aleutians in the crucial first few months. I know it isn't the conventional wisdom to seek engagement with KB at this stage but I think conventional wisdom is limiting people from certain options which can be viable.

This is the surface group I have my eyes on. It is making life hell for my evacuation of Singapore but in so doing is also using up its ammunition. My overall plan is to try to route my transports around it stuff them into batavia and then, when this battleship group makes for Batavia to run the PoW strike group in at the same time and force an encounter. I expect both sides to be badly damaged but with the Japanese having to make their way home to distant ports any damage they suffer will be more serious than any damage I suffer.

My intel tells me that "35th Brigade is loaded on AP,Mexico Maru moving to Singkawang." I am re-activating a lot of the Martin 139s and have a major PT boat flotilla there comprising about 10 PTs from Soerabaja. I should be able to take a fair toll of this force.

RE: HyperWar 42. (Not for Jutland13)

Post by Nemo121 »

stldiver,
Well I think the main conclusion I've drawn so far is that he is VERY, VERY aggressive and knows how to capitalise on his advantages. If you go down he'll not only kick you while you're down, he'll also do his best to knife you as you get up [:D].

What I'm doing at the moment is letting him see a certain pattern of actions on my part ( committment of my surface strike groups to forward defence) while he happily slaughters my transports ( and I consciously do little to defend them in terms of surface group escorts etc). Over the course of the next few days I'll get my surface strike groups into position to steam into Batavia and its surrounding waters quickly and then make for the strike group with the 3 BBs. So, show weakness, let him get comfortable taking advantage of it, lead him to believe you are directing your strength at different points and then, at the correct time, smash into his main force on favourable terms.

Well, that's my plan anyways. We'll see if it has worked within the next few days.

Aztez, not sunk no. Damaged sufficiently to be docked to repair flooding though. So more of a mission kill for me than anything else but that's fine. The Japanese begin the game with 10 BBs. One of them has been removed for repair and I have my eye on seriously damaging another 3 and either sinking them or putting them in drydock for a long time. That will reduce the Japanese battleline to only 6 BBs and that will definitely bother any Japanese player ( and aid my defence of java and Sumatra which has been the whole aim of this strategy.

Tomorrow the PoW TF will make a diversionary strike into the Southern Borneo area which is where I've been operating most of my surface strike groups for days... This will tend to make the Japanese northern BBs feel safe. At that point I will sprint northward, refuel and seek surface engagement.

WOW

nice read as always nemo. v interesting seeing your allied approach. very agressive and very fruitful i must say[:D]. I subscribe to the forward defence and surface attack too but not quite to the extent you have though and you are getting huge results in areas i never expected i.e rabaul ( why he's not operating betties from truk i dont know).

i'm sure you are aware but aussie a/c can upgrade anytime as opposed to brits which wait till may for it. really good candidates for beauforts which as you have seen can be devastating and also act as a huge deterrant too.

looking at the combat reports there are a LOT of dead 'full' allied troops ships, i'd be weeping at that but you seem very resigned to it , what sort of condiation are the evaced ex-malaya units in by the way ? and are you using ALL in palembang or moving some south for a quick trasfer to java ( several brit brigades allows you to cover all bases from para attack as well as forward defend at kragen too). Also how are you using PP's at the moment ? moving dutch 'island garissons' to aus to rebuild ( esp the base forces ) can really help in a month or 2 . also pre prepping units for the likes of koepang also pays off as you will have some 100% or close to units when he decides to try for here ( assuming he does not rush the place ).

Also PM ? any plans to send up an aussie div early ? also sending a brigade or even the likes of sparrow force to gili gili can really slow him down too. if you do send a 'force' be sure to send a BF for the engineers though else no forts will be constructed.

Hopefully Churchill will be kind to you early on and not demand anything too harsh ( preferably nothing ) else this can really hurts your PP plans. I sent a CV home ( possibly a mistake ) as i'd earmarked some aussie units for timor which i'd never have moved if i defaulted .. guess thats play style but im still holding timor so it did work.

good luck and i'd love to see a mog vs. nemo .. i have a mental picture of a submarine locked in mortal combat with the giant kitten from the goodies ( if anyone remembers that [;)])
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Rob,

Well, as I've said before, I don't actually play to win. I play to enjoy the game and my enjoyment comes from conducting knife-edge operations and doing things which conventional wisdom decries but my assessment says just may be possible ( surface strikes right up to Betty bases, carrier battles in december 41 etc ;) ).... So, I'm enjoying how the current game is unfolding and my force efficiency is ramping up very quickly as the experience of my bombers in DEI continues to increase.

Good questions though... I preferentially selected my Base Force units to take the brunt of the losses in my sacrificial AP routings... Of course a few APs with combat troops also got clobbered but most of my ground combat units are in good shape... We are 3 days ahead ( and they've been good days ;) ) and assuming the convoys still at sea make it to Palembang and Teloekboetang intact ( a reasonable assumption given that they are all no more than 1 day out) the ground combat units will be in the following shape ( numbers do not include disabled squads. About 1/3rd, on average, of each Bde is disabled but they are recovering disablement as support troops arrive and repair:

SSVF Bde: 99%
12 Indian Bde: 91%
6 Indian Bde: 61%
15 Indian bde: 100%
28 Indian Be: 99%
22 Australian Bde: 107%
27 Australian Bde: 85%
1 Malaysian Bde: 75%
2 Malaysian Bde: 84%
Plus three Dutch Bns at Palembang. Essentially my AV at Palembang is now over 800 and I have level 4 fortifications.

Teloekboetang:
8 Indian Bde: 75%
FMSV: 70%
22 Indian Bde: 60%

The Bdes making for Teloekboetang are pretty beaten up since I only managed to get them out a day before Singapore fell. When Singapore fell only 3000 tons of supplies and the unevacuable Singapore Fortress unit remained in Singapore. The rest had all been moved out.

The BFs are in much worse shape with most being at no better than 33 to 50%.

So, with over 200 AV at Soerabaja, 200 at batavia, 100 at Kraken, 800 ( and rising at Palembang) and 300 at Teloekboetang ( these troops unloaded here since I didn't want to risk them being hit while unloading at Batavia since the 3 enemy BBs have been raiding Batavia) at the start of the year I'll start moving troops around to achieve an optimal balance. I haven't been moving the troops out of Palembang yet since I wanted to protect against being "bounced" by a massive invasion force originating out of Northern Borneo.

Australian Units:
Yes, these units are all in place in Darwin just waiting for the PP to be freed up to move them to DEI. I have been, preferentially, freeing up the Dutch forces and, at present, I have evacuated pretty much every BF and ground combat unit in the outlying islands to DEI.

As to other air reinforcements... My B-17 transfers are almost complete and a solid core of B-17s will soon range out of Soerabaja and Batavia in addition to the large number of C-47s which will be flying out now that I've redeployed the necessary base forces throughout the southern Pacific. I also noted that my SBDs and Wildcats have very high replacement rates and the two non-CV squadrons of these planes have been crated up and are currently being shipped to Australia. They may arrive too late for the fighting in the DEI but if they arrive in time they will give my aerial defence significantly deeper pockets and the ability to withstand the attritional Zero and bomber raids which must soon come.

As to why he isn't operating Bettys out of Truk... I think that my aggressive moves in the DEI have drawn his full attention and he has allocated his Bettys to DEI. In response to my raids at Rabaul he appears to have redeployed 1 to 2 CVLs and a heavy cruiser TF. This is more than sufficient to force my surface strike group to leave the area and achieves his aims without diverting his most potent force ( Bettys) from the area in which they can prove decisive ( DEI ). He knows that there are 2 BBs, 1 BC, several CAs, over a half-dozen CLs and close to 20 DDs operating aggressively in this area. He also knows I've been evacuating Singapore and running reinforcements into Kendari ( two of the Australian Bns from Darwin have bolstered that defence) and shipping resources, oil and fuel out of the DEI. Between Kuching, Amboina and Tarakan I am certain that well over 200 Bettys and Nells are flying over DEI looking to nail my evacuation and surface strike forces. I've been very, very tricky about my surface group movements and that's the only thing that has kept them safe so far.

I'm not bothered about Koepang at all. let him take it and let him take Darwin etc if he wants. No, the main fight here will take place in Sumatra and Java. I'm not bothered about paratroops dropping into my rear areas in Java, the majority of the troops there will die in place and cadres f the rest can be flown out by PBY, and am only interested in keeping 1 non-Palembang/Teloekboetang base in Sumatra ( this base has already been sufficiently reinforced). He will definitely take Java and Sumatra but he should pay quite a price for them in terms of time and material and, with a bit of luck, I'll be able to evacuate significant forces for the defence of India, which I expect to be his next target.

PM,
No, no intention of sending any additional forces there. I may send a Bde there if I get enough time. It will depend on how long it takes him to take the DEI. He isn't hitting Rabaul with very significant forces and seems to really have front-loaded for a major strike on DEI and Phillipines. I believe that until such time as the DEI fall he won't have enough force to really hit me elsewhere with sufficient strength to overcome a Bde but if DEI falls quickly then I won't isolate a Bde at PM.

Churchill eh?
Well, we'll see what he demands. By the time he demands ships etc I expect to have some badly damaged BBs on hand and should be able to send a badly damaged one back ;).

And now onto the next day:

By the end of the evening 1 IJN CA an 2 DDs are sunk while Mogami and Hatakaze are left in sinking condition. Unfortunately this has cost me a CA, 2 CLs and 3 DDs very badly damaged with one DD sunk outright. So a much higher price than would have been paid if the BB TF had gone in first as planned but, altogether, a very acceptable price. And now that I've established that the PoW TF is in Southern Borneo it is time for it to sprint north and take on Kongo and its comrades.

Yes, the IJN is definitely getting ready for its next leap forward. Macassar, Pontianak, Kendari, Toboali and Balikpapan all look like the likely targets for this phase. Once these are taken it will be possible to put a stranglehold on Java and Sumatra. Unfortunately for the IJN this leap is occurring just as my forces are beginning to hit what they aim at.

Hmm, I really wasn't expecting KB to make for Amchitka Island. Still, the losses are acceptable. The equivalent of 2 US Divisions have been unloaded at the Aleutians and these bases will, very quickly, be built up. My CVs are ordered to shift slightly southwestward about 480 miles south-east of KB in the hopes of forcing KB to engage only after it has expended significant ops points. 3 CVs vs 6 Japanese CVs and with all the advantages in experience the Japanese have ( I haven't even been able to upgrade from F2s yet ;) ) looks suicidal but I think I've shaped the battlefield such that I will lose 1 CV, the BB Colorado ( it is present only as a torpedo-soak) and a couple of CAs. In return I hope to get hits on a couple of the IJN CVs sufficient to put them out of the fight for the next 3 months or so ( the time I feel I need to meet my goals in the Aleutians and that time in which I must have KB sufficiently weakened that it cannot face off against my Aleutian LBA with impunity ).

I predict that by 26th December, whether for good or ill, we're going to have our first battleline combat and first CV combat in this game. No matter which way these battles go they should be instructive... I think I've done enough to shape each of these fights to my benefit ( at great cost) that I should be able to achieve my goals ( destruction of the BB TF at Batavia and damage to 2 IJN CVs sufficient to put them in dock for 2 months) at a reasonable cost ( 1 CV, 2 BBs, 2 CAs and a few CLs and DDs).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/23/41

This turn was marke by the return of the Betty menace and a lot of very confused fighting around Borneo. IJN forces are raiding Allied bases while Allied forces are raiding IJN bases. Defence seems to be a forgotten option and Allied and Japanese forces seem to be harkening back to the days of the bareserker ( and no, I don't mean berserker... bareserker denotes the original, correct terminology).

The IJN invasion of Palembang appears to have been thwarted. A sizable portion of an IJA division ( I think it was the 22nd but I don't bother counting IJA units so I may be wrong) was drowned when its transport was sunk. My opponent tells me that this mid-ocean interception has convinced him to delay the invasion of Palembang for the time being.

Unfortunately these survivors of the previous day's fighting are caught by the Southern Borneo BB TF and annihilated. Taking these losses into account I would have to say that the honours over the course of the two days are even. Mogami has been confirmed sunk so, so far, it looks like 2 x CA and 3 DD were sunk in return for 1 CA, 2 CL and 3 DD. Still, given the starting experiences and the strategic situation in which the operation was mounted even a draw like this must be considered quite a victory.

I know these aerial assaults on the Kongo BB TF might appear pointless to many as I am suffering losses to little effect but the way I view it is that my aircraft are far more replaceable than PoW and Repulse and so anything I can do to increase the enemy system damage and thus reduce their combat effectiveness is to be welcomed. Losing a few planes for another 2 or 3 points of system damage is, IMO, an excellent trade.

As you can see the Japanese bombers were succesfully distracted by the large number of empty (sacrificial) APs and AKs running around and didn't hit anything of any great value at all. It is tough on the transport crews but better several APs and AKs than even slight damage to a BB or BC.
