Thrilla in Manila - Mogami Goes Mild

Post by dpstafford »

Actuallly, it may me neither, if Mogami's pre game statement turns out to be true true.

Mogami

It's going to be a boring game because I will not fight in china unless you make me. I am not going to trigger Soviets. I won't move between HQ without paying PP. No TF will bombard without being in range of friendly CAP. No landings on turn 1 unless enemy base is within 4 hexes of Japanese base where landing force begin.

It should be noted that I did not ask for these restrictions, nor will I "enforce" them should he change his mind.

All I asked is that he not target the American CV's on December 7th.

Alternate game titles could be "The Battle of Ohio" (Findlay vs Columbus). Or perhaps, "The Saint Versus The Sinner". In the latter case, I will be up to the forum to decide who is who.

My thoughts as the allies on the first turn: Very conservative opening. Fewer landings than the historical Japanese. Nothing at Wake, or Malaysa, or even the Phillipines yet. Though there are Rising SUn TF's in view both east and west of PI. The Pearl strike was particularly effective with one BB already sunk and many more severly damaged. Batan Island fell. Hong Kong is defiant.

Day 2.  The action picks up, but these first two combat reports as still the smallest I have ever seen during the initial weeks of the war.

New landings are plentiful.  But ALL are in the eastern half of the SRA.  From the PI down to New Guinea.  No landings anywhere near Malaya or Singapore.

KB appears to be retiring to home waters.

(I've used PP to transfer the US 4E bombers from the Philippines to Asia--everything else will stand and fight).

Finally, a combat report worthy of the name.  That's 20K, mother-frakker!!

Sure, most of it is fluff.  One-eyed Dutchmen flying endless sorties against the invaders.  I have even turned over the fighters to naval attack in hopes of breaking the rhythm of the carefully choreographed Japanese onslaught!

KB has left allied recon range.  Still no invasion of Malaya by land or sea.

Hi, The Japanese plan is very simple. I'm going to capture the SRA and build a defense ring and then make Dan come and get me.  I'm not going to use any exploits. I'm going to practice what I preach and see if WITP can handle it and what results are produced.

I am forced into certain actions by the starting set up. (I can't break up the Death Star before I get to a port with escorts to form new Aircombat TF. After that I'm not going to place more then 2 CV/CVL in a TF and no more then 2 such TF in a single hex. )

The only way Japanese can get an auto victory is if Dan commits suicide and suffers massive loss of ships and aircraft.

Japan will surrender when
1. Home Islands are not producing supply
2. Heavy bombers are in normal range of Home Islands (Saipan is not in normal range but that never stopped me from scoring 30k points through bombing from there)
3. A city in Home Islands has been attacked with atomic bomb. (Allies do not get first bomb till July 1945)

Or Allies get required point ratio (4-1 in 1943 3-1 in 1944 2-1 in 1945/46

So unless Dan forces surrender by getting the required points ratio the game will go till at least July 1945.

Japanese pilots will be trained using the training mission (not the bomb the isolated enemy base method)

Invasions will not use AK for infantry type units. (once again at start infantry type units are loaded onto AK types. These ships will never again be employed in landings)(they do carry tank and arty units)

1,500,000 load points in AK will be moved to Port Arthur and once there are out of game. (except as targets to allied air attack)

I will not touch any aircraft factory that is conducting RD at start.

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

Just found your aar this morning.

AAR hint:
From reading others, try taking the altitude levels of your attacking a/c.

"Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Blenheim IV bombing at 10000 feet
4 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
3 x Blenheim I bombing at 10000 feet
3 x Blenheim IV bombing at 10000 feet
4 x Blenheim I bombing at 10000 feet
3 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
2 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
3 x Blenheim I bombing at 10000 feet
4 x Blenheim IV bombing at 10000 feet"

as that will shorten your AAR and make it more readable. Also, maybe leave out some of the non-important combats especially those where nothing happens.

Good Luck against the evil Mog Empire!

What is the reason for this?

To recreate the fact that most of Japans AKs modelled in game wouldnt have been used for millitary purposes or draining the SRA of Resources. I think..

The big news of the day:  Two Jap tin cans sent to the bottom by US PT's operating in the Philippines.

P-40's continue to score hits on transports in and around Luzon.  In retaliation, a large Betty raid in sent to bomb Manila's air field.

The KB is visible heading west, approximately 200 miles NNE of Midway.
