AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/23/43

Sorry for not updating this recently. My mother died quite suddenly 11 days ago and
frankly this hasn't been very important since. Things are getting better now most of
the initial shock has subsided. so on with the AAR to kep my mind busy.

Having re-read the last few posts not much has changed in the big picture. I'll do some
longer theatre reports in the next few posts. Today its the british in the spotlight.

Sabang hosts the british B17 contingent and has been tasked to clobber the rubber plantations
in mayala. last turn the escorts brushed aside the few oscars. Today they encountered the
japanese night fighters on day CAP. it was an interesting fight with 2E fighters all round.
bar the P40N's which were poor performers. with both side having big guns almost all hits
were fatal and very few damaged a/c on either side. The allies definately won and gutted his
NF force in the bargain. standing down tomorrow for a rest.

Day Air attack on Kuala Lumpur , at 23,46

Japanese aircraft

Beaufighter Mk 21: 3 destroyed, 3 damaged
P-40N Warhawk: 3 destroyed, 2 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 2 damaged

Resources hits 16

SS Seadragon sank 2 PC's off the east coast of malaya ( Joe's ASW ships seem to be favoured
targets recently) and the sub offensive in the pacific saw one japanese AK hit by S-30 4 times !
I seem to be having better luck patroling ports rather than sea lanes oddly enoungh.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 26,43

Japanese Ships

In china Nanning now hosts 48 P40N's and some 12 swordfish while pakhoi hosts some cats
on spotting missions. Japanese bombers tried to hit pakhoi AF's but the float planes
don't care about them [;)]

Day Air attack on Pakhoi , at 39,39

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 29
Ki-48 Lily x 19

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 3 damaged

Allied ground losses:

And once again Victoria point gets hit from andaman is.

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
305 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 6
Runway hits 21

Joe has placed a LOT more force here in the past few days.

Since supply levels in china have risen I decided to shoot back at Yenen and
authorised the chinese artilley to engage. Much more effective than i had expected

Ground combat at Yenen

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 138732 troops, 918 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4326

Defending force 417571 troops, 3817 guns, 365 vehicles, Assault Value = 7560

Japanese ground losses:

Thank you VSWG much appreciated.

On with the war !

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/27/43

American subs hit more shipping around Guam etc. sinking 2 AP's and one AK. Cant seem to
find his TK convoys anywhere. Catalinas flyng from china see nothing in the china sea.
They did find a convoy unloading at Taan and 4 repeated attacks from the swordfish
at Nanning must have been a suprise for him [:D]. All in all 4 AK's struck, 2 confirmed sunk.

New Guinea saw a wee bit of action as planes hit gili gili Airfield HARD

Day Air attack on Gili Gili , at 56,94

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 193

Japanese aircraft losses
No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 4 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
423 casualties reported
Guns lost 7

Airbase hits 47
Airbase supply hits 18
Runway hits 287 !!!!!!!!!

That wont be repairing in the near future. shame i missed the float planes. maybe port attacks ?

small (ish) fighter sweep of PM caught a few leaking CAP planes.

Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 53,91

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 6
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 14

Allied aircraft
P-38G Lightning x 53

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 6 destroyed
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 10 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-38G Lightning: 4 destroyed

I can live with that and rotate the P38's each turn should attrit his air power nicely.

Tomorrow the 17's go for PM Port weather prevailing.

On the morning of the 28th (may) Japanese heavy shelling hit the now abandoned base at Ndini
For those that don't know where that is (its a pointless dot base). its NE of luganville. One
of my failed base building events for operation Ooze. Rennel island is much much better. Now
a level 2 AF and guarded quite well with F4's P38's and Corsairs. another BF flying in
tomorrow from luganville. but in the last few days i'd flown in a NZ brigade just in case.

After this action i'm tempted to sail some CV's to Noumea (currently in brisbane)

Naval bombardment of Ndini, at 72,101

Japanese Ships
DD Kari
DD Hayabusa
DD Wakatake
DD Hokaze
DD Hatakaze
DD Matsukaze
DD Asakaze
DD Akatsuki
DD Umikaze
DD Shigure
CL Yubari
CL Tenryu
CL Kinu
CA Suzuya
BB Haruna

Airbase hits 5
Runway hits 14
Port hits 8
Port supply hits 13

BUT .. i think he's spotted my CV's , he has a sub in brisbane harbour ! sacrelidge <sp> thats my
lake down there ! and multiple air attacks failed to hit the RO class boat. I'm not 100% sure
but i think he can now see whats in the port by hovering the mouse over the anchor icon [:@]

S-19 was hit twice by ASW A/C off townsville so she'll be going home rapidly.

Today piccie of the Marshall islands. Not much to see but its a stand off still.Backwater in reality
for allied planners. so long as he keeps about 300 front line fighters here they aren't
anywhere useful [;)]

I've made a decision to wait for the new replacement essex units before hitting new guinea
as the potential losses far out weigh the gains i.e lose all my CV's (again) and get dribs and
drabs till 45 ! just how japan would like to keep KB intact in the long term. This is
an operation that MUST have CV support and will be facing enemy LBA as well as KB , while my LBA
will be struggling with the range.

I'm looking at Tavoy for future ops for the commonwealth. seems the weakest ( initially) with 4k
defenders .. humm maybe start prepping. Anyway i think i will be hard pressed to make a break
out in burma. he added another division to the weakest point BUT I have 3 divs heading in soon
maybe i can push him out with heavy disruption from bombing BUT my supply level is awful. all troops
have 50% of basic ?? and i dont know why ? mandalay has oodles of it but just not sharing
with front line troops [&:]. Dakotas have been air dropping stuff in too. I've stopped bombardment
attacks to start saving up some. So the RAF has the job of disrupting the japanese while the
allies rest for a large shock attack coming in a few weeks (i.e when the 3 new (non-chinese)
divisions arrive). Raheng drive is hitting a brick wall soon (4 units) .. not sure wether to
keep on going and possibly get routed OR stop ?

more next turn

Ouch condolenses too [:(] (I went through the same 2 years ago)

As for your question... I say go for it if you got the troops in Burma. It is good to have him on the run and not have the time to build up defenses there!

Otherwise you seem to be doing fine! [:)]

Thanks Aztez, It's one of those things that can only really be understood by those who have been
through it, my condolonces to you too.

Anyhoo.. action is what the readers want and i will summarise the starting 2 days in June before
carrying on with today turn.

After the attack on Tann shipping , i suspected he would run in the port for safety. He did and
avengers and the chinese P40N's (dropping 500lb bombs) smashed 8 ships in harbour ( he didnt CAP
it). None reported sunk but SS Gar is patrolling the harbour entrance if he tries to get some
damaged ships out by night. I switched back to full defensive mode but no retaliation as yet.

Bad news was he switched bombarding that useless base in the SW Pacific and hit Rennel island
hard on a night attack. about 20 allied planes destroyed on the ground but the damage to
the facilities was repaired by daybreak. 16 Dauntlesses flown in as deterrant. No allied one
engined torp planes anywhere near. In response the Royal Navy carriers sortied to noumea as thier
long range barracuda planes may just be able to ambush, also the remaining fulmar sqdn. will upgrade to corsairs ( corsair IV) soon.

quick piccie of the north pacific .. another RCT loading up for Attu island then try and get him
utterly destroyed.

3rd Try .. puter is throwing wobblies this afternoon [:@]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/02/43

I forgot to mention Mr Churchill gave me a call and demanded the return of an escorted BB
Well he can have the BB Valient ( its rubbish) .. but the escorts are staying ! the Brit DD's
are far too useful to send home and the political cost is minimal, as opposed to the BB ..

The Night silence was boken over Sabang with the first night raid for some time

Night Air attack on Sabang , at 19,41

Japanese aircraft
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 20

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter VIF x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 2 destroyed, 6 damaged

Somewhat unexpectedly the Beaufighters shot down 2 attackers the rest were flak damages.
The raid was a LOT smaller than before and hit nothing at all [:D]. the experience of the
night flyers is slowly creeping up .. 63 ish now on average, which really is poor considering
this squadron has been with me from the start. They have racked up 23 night time kills in total
and the C/O SqdLdr Ebbels is a good 60/55 in attributes. flying at 15k seems the best height
as Joe does not seem to alter the attackers altitude much.

The japanese bombardment runs at rennel was a lot weaker today

Naval bombardment of Rennell Island, at 66,99

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
P-38G Lightning: 1 destroyed
SBD Dauntless: 3 destroyed
F4F-4 Wildcat: 4 destroyed
F4U-1 Corsair: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships
DD Kari
DD Hayabusa
DD Wakatake
DD Hokaze
DD Hatakaze
DD Matsukaze
DD Asakaze
DD Akatsuki
DD Umikaze
DD Shigure
CL Yubari
CL Tenryu
CL Kinu
CA Suzuya
BB Haruna

Allied ground losses:
301 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Vehicles lost 1

Airbase hits 6
Airbase supply hits 12
Runway hits 55
Port supply hits 1

All fixed by morning ( apart from the a/c who have replacements turned off for now).

The dauntless tried to fly come morning but failed to find a target ! .. looking at the map
the japanese group is still at rennel is. are my dive bomber pilots blind ? they must be ! [:@]

Just to keep things even the americans are shelling the japanese troops at attu in the
aleutians in return

Naval bombardment of Attu Island, at 92,34

Allied Ships
BB Arizona
DD Barton
BB California
CA New Orleans
DD O'Bannon
BB Pennsylvania
CL Phoenix
CA San Francisco

Japanese ground losses:
192 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

His support squads must be hurting badly after weeks of the above action, not to mention
heavy air raids when the weather is clear

e.g

Day Air attack on 53rd Division, at 92,34

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 37
F4U-1 Corsair x 11
SBD Dauntless x 27
Kittyhawk I x 14
Beaufort I x 12
P-40E Warhawk x 21
A-20G Havoc x 36
B-25J Mitchell x 9

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
98 casualties reported

Day Air attack on 53rd Division, at 92,34

Allied aircraft
PB4Y Liberator x 10
B-24D Liberator x 42

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
39 casualties reported

Ground troops report that they are evenly matched with the invaders . his supply must be
abysmal by now . one more RCT ( on the way) and we will try to crush the invaders. Good news
is that he cannot evacuate cadres from the tanks units to rebuild them. so i hope they
will die permanently. the rest will take over a year to rebuild is my guess and it will
put a strain on japanese armaments production with luck too.

Ground combat at Attu Island

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14222 troops, 189 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 541

Defending force 24123 troops, 7 guns, 77 vehicles, Assault Value = 489

Japanese ground losses:
130 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 4

The US fast BB;s Washington , south dakota and Massachusets have finished upgrades to thier AA
suite at PH. sailing south on a dog leg course to noumea.

Also sailing to Noumea is the Royal Navy CV elements , with the new ALbacore torpedo bomber
i might just suprise the japanese in the SW Pacific. i.e long range fight when the jap bombs
bounce off the armoured decks but mine have torps and can really hurt. the last fulmar squadron
is shortly going to get new Corsairs.

On a side note i pulled 2 AA regiments back from Palmyra to the west coast to get them somewhere
more useful. one has now overbuilt to 115% strength .. handy ..

Also long range liberators spotted what might be a japanese surface/air task force possibly
closing on attu island .. i doubt it as it was lost on the 2nd day. BUT i have changed all
standing orders in the theatre just in case he's trying to suprise me.

The heavy bombers hit Port moresby port facilities :-

Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 53,91

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 5

Allied aircraft
P-38G Lightning x 91
F-5A Lightning x 1
B-17E Fortress x 188

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
P-38G Lightning: 1 damaged

Port hits 5
Port supply hits 12

the hits look ineffectual but later recon places the port at 60% damaged .. rest day tomorow
as i cant continually run them as the fatigue is horrendous ofetr 2 intensive days.

Submarines were quiet of late apart from SS Steelhead who torpedoed a gunboat off tinian

Sub attack at 66,64

Japanese Ships
PG Kogyoku Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
PG Kyo Maru #10
PG Kyo Maru #8

Allied Ships
SS Steelhead

BUT in the same proximity SS Balao was heavily depth charged , and the japanese seem to have a new
ASW Weapon , the 3 inch ASW Mortar .. never seen that in combat before.

ASW attack at 68,52

Japanese Ships
PC Sado
PC Oki
PC Etoforu
DD Kiyonami
DD Tamanami
DD Shimakaze

Allied Ships
SS Balao, hits 15 OUCH

Thants all for now ..

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/04/43.

Another 2 quietish days so not much to report.

The SBD's on rennel had thier 1st succesful attack on the 7th hitting a PG which had been
hunting SS Nautalis off tulagi island in the solomons. 1000lb bomb should hurt badly. but
3 PB4Y Liberators from luganville failed in an attack on 2 merchants unloading at lunga, one
was shot down by zeros the other 2 returned safely.

Nendo in the santa cruz islands ( see last SW pac screenshot). was bombarded at night. the lone
AK that had been sent to collect 1 kittyhawk ( thats all thats left here) was sunk by heavy
gunfire then the japanese failed to KO this straggler airplane [:@]. dumb rules.

and missed the only available target on the entire island too.

16 USN avenger torp bombers added to renell as a suprise, no naval search for them . lets see
if the BB's come into range [:D]

Not much else happening. only one thing of note really, commonwealth set to attack in burma.
2 fresh divs have arrived and even though supply looks terrible its time for a push as air power
has been plastering the jungle where the japanese have been hiding day in day out for weeks.

fingers crossed as this would force a japanese retreat back to thailand !

This all happened between noumea and brisbane, which is within catalina range from both bases
and also Norfolk island, which has been a sea plane base for some time ( just to cover this
bit of sea too )[:@] GAK.

Just in case he's steaming to hit bribane ( home of the US Cv's) i have made 3 air combat tf's
with 1 cv 1 cvl 1 cve and lots of good AAA to sail one hex SE of hrisbane on no-react and do-not-retire orders.

this with the LBA in brisbane c 80 mitchells and 150 odd fighters and some odds and sods should be
very very tough to take on. the british have left noumea for fear of port attack too.
considering how abysmally the recon failed with high exp PB4Y on naval search i don't blame them.
and that 48 there too not just a small flight .. he also bypassed the mariners out of rennel island
as well.. stealth ships indeed.

one bright spot .. the agaki wa hit near lunga

Day Air attack on TF, near Lunga at 67,97

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 18

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 3
F4U-1 Corsair x 4

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
TBF Avenger: 3 damaged

Japanese Ships
AK Akagi Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage [:D]
AK Awata Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

wrong agaki but allied HQ will take all the luck it can get.

I sort of hope he comes to brisbane UNLESS the darn CV's react !

also in the doldrums was burma .. failed 0-1 attack again

Ground combat at 31,33

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 75592 troops, 580 guns, 961 vehicles, Assault Value = 2013

Defending force 55195 troops, 425 guns, 129 vehicles, Assault Value = 1170

Allied max assault: 1990 - adjusted assault: 308

Japanese max defense: 1016 - adjusted defense: 2591

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
1151 casualties reported
Guns lost 25

Allied ground losses:
1527 casualties reported
Guns lost 40
Vehicles lost 3

losses were acceptable but i would have thought 1-1 at least .. he's sending in another div here
too according to recon. i have a 'cunning' plan. and in the same spirit of baldrick i doubt it
will work either .. more detail later. not that brain bending a plan really.

soem more good news too, the lightnings have unloaded in ceylon and are repairing after thier
rather hazardous sea voyage, they will be very welcome in sabang and will initially coduct
sweeps with beaufighters then escort the b17's to start clobbering the rubber plantations.
Basically the beaufighters arent good enough to go toe to toe with front line japanese
fighters .. can annaliate bombers though [:'(]

Piccie is the uplifting attack on the Agaki today

Here we go , finally a turn .. no idea what happened to the 8th and 9th June [&:]..

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/10/43

Some very major action seen by the brave pilots over rennel island this past 2 days.
Firstly the japanese carriers retiring from the south coral sea tried to hit the AF
at Rennel. Unfortunately for Japan i had re-activated a very bust up P38 unit which
had been resting for 4 days. Fortuitous timing indeed.

Day Air attack on Rennell Island , at 66,99

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 75

the lightnings had recovered somewhat from the morning battering and performed very well
considering the numerical advantage japan had.

Overall 10 lightning pilots were lost, but the airfield and support are both 40/60 damaged
and supply has dropped to the orange level despite 100+ dakotas flying in supply, also have
10 subs hauling what they can in too. Just to help a bit i have flown out the bombers and just left
the fighters to cover the airfield. also removed were the F4's to rebuild in noumea ( they were
down to 4 airplanes from 24 .. 16 pilots ok though ).

One bit of luck though , i had sortied the US CV's to avoid a port strike at brisbane and
then a glen recon plane from a lurking japanese sub flew over the base. looks like it was a
'hit and recon' mission as the sub is withdrawing. sent out ASW groups in case he comes back.
but i think my CV's are unspotted (possible).

Up North, the allies attack on attu island, the defenders are out of supply and have been
bombed for weeks yet i still take hideous losses ?? [&:]. Resting up next turn, and most losses
seem to be disablements, but all the same its daft

Ground combat at Attu Island

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 31393 troops, 268 guns, 12 vehicles, Assault Value = 520

Defending force 22629 troops, 4 guns, 55 vehicles, Assault Value = 431

Allied max assault: 500 - adjusted assault: 270

Japanese max defense: 277 - adjusted defense: 52

I am happy with the torpedo bombers operating out of china. 6 AK's hit in 2 days. and even one
in taan port. no allied losses and 2 confirmed sinkings.

thats just 2 of 5 attacks made. Nice one boys !

Other than that. the usual burma bombing etc.

MY 'grand plan' is to try and get out of that god forsaken jungle onto the main raillines
with all the men and tanks then quickly turn on his main line which he has denuded by at
least 2 divisions and try and get a breakthrough the old fashioned way. getting out
the jungle will take a while i hope and pray he doesnt attack in the meantime and try and
pin me. doubtful as i think he would get a thrashing but it would be frustrating.

thats all folks

Here we go , finally a turn .. no idea what happened to the 8th and 9th June [&:]..
What do you mean? The game left out two full days? [&:]

This Rennel Island Operation is IMO another great way to attrit his forces. Keep turning the thumbscrews on as many theaters as possible, even if you suffer some tactical losses.

Thats my overall plan theatre wide objective. The only real theater that cant do something about it is the pacific central and south arms dur to the long ranges involved, but the killing in burma/PM/China and now in SW Pacific all adds up in the long run.

Oddly he's given up contesting air over the british forces except for the very rare turn when he realises i havn't forgotten to send escort fighters due to inactivity [;)]

As for the 8th and 9th i really am clueless, my memory of late has been as sound as a sieve thats been used for semtex practise [:D]

ooh .. fast turn. good one Joe !

So what has defined the 12th and 13th of June 1943 ?

first up has to be the continued air battle over rennel island. 2 large japanese
air attacks.

first one :-

Day Air attack on Rennell Island , at 66,99

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 40
G3M Nell x 20
G4M1 Betty x 24
H8K Emily x 3
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 13
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 17
Ki-21 Sally x 18
Ki-48 Lily x 20
Ki-49 Helen x 22

Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 6
P-38G Lightning x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3a Zero: 12 destroyed
G3M Nell: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 5 destroyed
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 13 destroyed
Ki-21 Sally: 6 damaged
Ki-48 Lily: 3 destroyed, 2 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 7 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
F4U-1 Corsair: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged
P-38G Lightning: 10 destroyed, 2 damaged
TBF Avenger: 2 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
138 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 3
Runway hits 32

46 japanese to 14 allied .. thats ok with me !

second attack on the 13th

Day Air attack on Rennell Island , at 66,99

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 38
G3M Nell x 18
G4M1 Betty x 24
H8K Emily x 4
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 9
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 11
Ki-21 Sally x 15
Ki-48 Lily x 20
Ki-49 Helen x 15

Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 5
P-38G Lightning x 10

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3a Zero: 11 destroyed
G3M Nell: 2 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 1 damaged
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 1 destroyed
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
Ki-21 Sally: 4 damaged
Ki-48 Lily: 4 destroyed, 5 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
F4U-1 Corsair: 4 damaged
P-38G Lightning: 18 destroyed
PBM Mariner: 1 destroyed
TBF Avenger: 1 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
170 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 50

japanese 25 to the allied 24 .. not so good but its all his polits which counts.

Rennel island is a level 2 airfield so as agreed before the game i can only base
100 planes here ( including damaged ones to be fair). hence the rather low allied
CAP on rennel as 40 P38's are damaged . Allied pilots did well overall with only 10
perishing in the skies while the others jump into repaired a/c to fight again.
another 16 Corsairs and 8 beaufighters flown in as defenders while the withdrawn air
units refit in noumea and luganville. Plenty of P40's are lined up for a tour of
duty at rennel if this continues for a lenghty period.

American B17's put some more hurt on PM .. with an astonishing amount of supply hits

Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 53,91

Allied aircraft
P-38G Lightning x 82
F-5A Lightning x 2
B-17E Fortress x 179

No Allied losses

Port hits 17
Port supply hits 33

WOW .. 33% of all supply up in flames , they were rained out on the 13th so will be tasked for
missions on the 14th and 15th despite fatigue. lets see if i can denude PM of supply again.
the runway and port damage at PM arent repairing according to recon which precludes any
fortification construction ( assuming it isnt at max already).

Meanwhile alled bombers fly from the andaman islands and hit diamond harbour airfields unopposed.

Day Air attack on Victoria Point , at 25,39

Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 7
Blenheim IV x 20
Beaufort V-IX x 15
P-40B Tomahawk x 32

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
54 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 15

it all adds up [;)]

I set some ( a lot) of subs as computer control to test the theory that they will stalk
japanese TF's .. all i have seen is 2MSW and one PG sunk for no allied loss. no attacks at
all on merchants ?? maybe more time is needed but i think they were doing better before
i swopped them over.

The British torp planes from china again score more hits on japanese shipping.

e.g

Day Air attack on TF, near Haiphong at 37,38

Allied aircraft
Barracuda x 2

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AK Kokoku Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

3 more sank today from last turns hits and one blown out of the water with 3 18inch torps
hit today [:D]. I really would highly recomend other allied players trying this tactic.
Joe seems not to have sent any planes to cover the convoys so the planes fly unescorted
quite happily even into haiphong harbour. I have sent down some more aviation support
personell to provide chinese fighter cover.

Todays piccie is air losses, seems light at first glance BUT the main thing is the
top 5 loss makers are japanese [:D]. after losing 4 CV's the b17s became a main arm
and has suffered accordingly. Actually the losses are low given the date as we had
a long hiatus after japanese expansion and the british comeback in burma (where this
AAR started out).

byr for now , fingers crossed for a fast turn

Another 2 days characterised by nothing at all !

No raids on rennel island thankfully ..

This has allowed time to fix up the runways and support building double time. they even had a
few hours spare to expand the airfield by 8%. I seem to have way too much AV support at rennel
right now, but it will be used when the field expands and the extra engineers alwals helps.

lightning squadron fixed up 8 planes so only 32 remain unoperable.. still v poor service.
But the beaufighters pulled out and replaced with a new formed corsair group as its a LOT
better imo.

Once upto a level 4 it will be unassailable and i will start sweeps over guadalcanal. Barring
any japanese bombardment missions ( unavoidable) this should happed sooner rather than later.

Up in the aleutians i'm sending in yet another RCT to attu as 2 of the 3 american regiments there
are very very battered at 60% operational. despite resting. They will resume artilley shelling
from tomorrow though. I am shipping north pacific HQ here too as this will hopefully rapidly
increase the recovery of the RCTs. All these RCT's mean that my rear in the aleutians is bare as
a bone .. only Anchorage and kiska have combat troops .. 2/3d's are or will be soon in attu.

Port moresby was hit with 2 big raids that in total did 11 supply hits [:@], just goes to show the
effect of fatigue imo. Resting for 2 days and the raid was unopposed. I'm also testing the waters
a bit by sending small single merchantmen to the 2 unoccupied/unconquored bases on new guinea.
I doubt they will make it but it will at least give me some insight into japanese LBA at Lae.

Tenimbar ( island north of darwin ) will start conducting sweeps of east timor soon as its
recieved its first wirraway2's .. good bomb load on these puppies too.

In Burma .. and with a thaw in US/Commonwealth reationships . Roosavelt has agreed to send over
an american infantry division to assist in the burmese operation. will arrive in 90 days.
Also in burma japan has now comitted 80,000 combat troops to the jungle hex i am evacuating [;)]
i am continuing to bomb here so he does not suspect i'm leaving .. fingers crossed. plus troops
moving behind the lines could give the impression i am trying to re-inforce here rather than
withdraw. this plan might work after all [:D], another dummy op will be sending 2 entire divisions
from madras to andaman islands so he's even more paranoid about landings behind his lines , and in
truth if he does not re-inforce tavoy i might well do so.

As a side note i'm seriously running low on recon birds ! the F5's come in soooo slowly and now i
have 5 operational sqds i'm losing more than im producing, this is farsical imo . Starting to
regren upgrading some dutch ones now as non-pdu i cant swop them back .. 2 F5 sqds down to 5 a/c
thats 14 total down on optimum numbers and that alone is 3 months worth of production [:@]and the
other 3 are less that optimal too. i tried to raise the altitude to 40,000 ft but oddly i lost
even more a/c to ops losses as japanese fighters cant even fly this high ! .. this lack of recon
in stock is a serious issue for the allies .. Ron where are you ? [:D]

No piccie today as none worth taking .. if he resumes attacks on rennel it will be interesting ..

also i have 3 divs in canton doing naff all ! .. lots of merchants heading here to move them to australia for duties in New Guinea as i feel the pacific is a backwater untill i get overwhelming
CV support. plus it ties down a lot of japanese assets defending the marshall islands.

bye for now

Why are you so eager to eliminate those troops on Attu? Just open "General Rob's Exclusive LBA Training Area" and let them wither away...

I could . but it seems gamey to use it as a training ground where IRL the allies would try and kill the japanese off pronto. And anyway Joe does very little on map training anyway so it's fairer imo.

It seems that Rennel Islands is wearing down pilot pools for both sides! Too bad about those Vanikolo disasters. (That base is currently level 2 airfield in my PBEM vs FDR. It has taken a lot of time to develop).

Nice going in the Aleutians too. I think Joe will be sorry that he ever contested Attu base there! [:D]

Thanks Aztez , havnt seen you around much recently , hope all is well in finland [:D]

Attu will scoop me 2 divisions 2 tank regiments and some other smaller units so thats quite a haul.

regarding valinoko .. getting the last men off is proving impossible must be a bug (see screenie)???

anyhoo .. on with a disastarous day for the allies !

The much feared japanese surface forces can and walloped Renell island very very hard ..

They rrived with thermo-nuclear shells it appears. the 2 coastal gun batteries are in ruins
and all bar one Base force has been trashed. the NZ troops seem unfazed by the disater though.
One very odd and disturbing event though. the supply here plummeted fro 2500 to just 22 ! [:@]
WTF happened there ? i had stoop the dakotas down for a rest period but only 20 hits and my supply
level dropping to starvation levels ? all re-inforcements were turned off iirc. i certainly set them
off today just in case. All of 12 planes from 100 ar flyable and immediately left .. over 40 remain
damaged however. Its all going horribly wrong here. I am so tempted to sail the CV's to help but
its in easy range for japanese LBA and i really want to avoid that if possible.

OK now time for better news .. the anti-naval shipping from china has been a real success

its a tad low here due to the abysmal road network in china.

Another rather quiet 2 days.

no a/c repaired on rennel due to the supply problem so i have a group of 15 damaged lightnings with 64 pilots ? it's quite amazing how you get 64 men in one last plane when the sqdn finally evacs [;)]

Rennel was quiet, burma was quiet. Truly bad weather pretty much everywhere.

Thers was one attack in burma a so-called large fighter sweep of rangoon by the P38's 24 from mandalay
and 72 from akyab. akyab was rained out both days but one day the mandalay a/c sortied and did very very poorly imo.

not good considering i was hopeing to butcher these slow 2E planes with 2 days of heavy sweeping
so suprise now lost .. darn it.

there were a few raids from china. and oddly the baracudas failed to launch from pakhoi
but the avengers went on just fine. he's also moved in some CAP over haiphong harbour.

more 2000lb bombs .. someone in china is hoarding these weapons as i have yet to see them
dropped in any other theatre [:D].

The slow crawl back to lines in burma continues although i fear my tanks are getting left behind
and could be vulnerable when he notices im leaving and i was hopeing for thier punch when i hit the main lines in a couple of weeks. drat.

Dakotas flew in 1400 supplies to rennell island over 2 days so the a/c will hopefully repair up a bit but i suspect he'll hammer this place hard . and even after 4 days i'm still clearing up the damage as the bombardment made bloody ruin of the engineers based here . one EAB unit has 1 operational bulldozer and all the rest are scrap while every squad inc support are disabled. quick question, will disablements come back even if reinforcemnets are turned off ? i assume so but im not 100% sure and its certainly not in the manual [:'(]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/20/43

Today not a lot other than normal events. I will for a change do a FULL combat report
on every event thats happened ( just to pad it out really [;)] , as i have been asked
by one reader for MORE info , you know who you are .hehe)

Night bombing attack on sabang in N sumatra. The British night fighters are a bit
pathetic really rarely catching an intruder, conversely the night bombers rarely hit
anything. the loss of a P40 is a very rare event.

I have moved up the only on map american night fighters from Noumea to Sabang just for
testing to see how well the P70 Havocs perform in night interception duty. No radar in them
so i'll not get too excited but it's doubled the night fighter numbers.

Sabang is also a forward submarine base with an AS ( sub supply ship) to re-load torpedoes.
5 subs sent on manual to prowl the south china sea at various strategic locationa i.e manilla
and brunei amongst others.

1st succesful sub attack on a tanker for quite some time.

I'm not getting many tankers at all really. Only 21 japanese tankers sunk since day one.
is this any good ? i really don't know how many that represents for japanese % sunk. any clues?

Thats not much in the way of on map training so Joe is being a very honorable opponent in my
opionion. Not that on map training is banned or anything i'm just following his lead on this.
hence the non-abuse of attu island.

Only 500lb bombs today, the big boys must have run out. the fighters took a beating
with 19 pilots dead or MIA .. the replacements are really bad unfortunately.they could be
a LOT worse though as the chinese pilot pool still has 61 pilots for assignment so not
scraping the barrel quite yet.

Another good sub attack 60 miles off the japanese coast, unescorted merchant find the
waters not so safe any more.

the defenders

The losses are negligable and indicate to me a high fortification level. IF i attack i
suspect i'd get slaughtered, so back home for this lot. the units are also supply short here
The supply in china is very very tenuous as i dont fly any in from india. the dakotas
are needed else where. IE i have ordered them to fly in more aviation support to
Pagan airbase in burma. saves the very long slog by foot.

Anyway , on to another theatre. South west pacific.

The damaged planes at rennel are finally getting fixed and flown out. down to 38 damaged now.
The facilities are also repairing, runway is clear but the ops room still looks like an
explosion at a Ikea factory [:D].

Time to rebuild and re-think peraton ooze. the need for CV's is painfully obvious.fortunately
there are quite a lot of carriers coming along. see below piccie.

A Large convoy carrying the 3rd USMC division just refuelled at Noumea and will head SE then creep
up the australian coast to townsville. with rennel island KO there is a possible gap in the
search network and i do not want this group attacked by the carriers like before. a smaller supply
convoy will take a more nortern route as advanced notice just in case.

I'm also shifting the 1st and 2nd marine divisions from canton to australia for a huge assault
on New guinea getting organised. to be led by a massive invasion of port moresby then quicky
grabbing gili gili for support and a forward fighter base.

that about covers todays update. attu got bombed heavily and the northern pacific HQ just unloaded
to provide extra support etc. might make a differance when i attack again in a few days.

bye for now , off to watch a movie on the telly ..
