RE: WITP AP's? - Canadian Liners

Post by engineer »

The Canadian-Pacific Railway also had a steamship subsidiary, the Canadian-Pacific Steamship Co., Ltd. that operated a very large fleet of ocean liners linking Canada to the rest of the world.  They also had a number of small liners operating along the coasts of British Columbia and among the Maritime Provinces.  With a war in the Pacific, continued operation of commerical service to Yokohama, Manila, Shanghai, etc. is out of the question so at least the liners in the Pacific would be available as troopships.  In addition, several of these liners were converted to merchant cruisers during WW1 and/or WW2.  So, for your consideration, I offer some OOB additions for the Royal Canadian Navy:

Additional comments:
- Fast Auxiliary Cruisers: The existing auxiliary cruiser has a 12 knot speed, but the CP ships were big 14,000-20,000 ton liners with a top speed of 18 or 19 knots. I would recommend creating a new fast auxiliary cruiser class that is based on a large AP platform instead of a small AP platform. Given their historical top speed, I would also recommend kicking up the speed to 18 knots.
- Initial Liners: I would recommend these in the non-upgraded version.
- "Duchess" Troopships: These vessels were new construction that joined CP in the late 1920s. Used as troopships in WW2, these would come into the theater in full troopship configuration.
- Addtional Canadian Ships: The RCN didn't acquire large surface combatants in the late 1920s historically, but if a war did break out, it would follow that appropriations for naval expansion would follow, in a similar if smaller amount than they did in WW2. With that in mind, it seems plausible to me that the Canadians would receive some destroyers, minesweepers, and subchasers from about 18 months after the start of hostilities through the end of the game. My estimate would be along the lines of 12-20 total ships.
