I just had an AK take 6 bombs from medium bombers, and still remain afloat.

Sheeesh! [8|] Let me elaborate. If the Float damage system is altered, such that bombs don't sink ships. Then what happens when your ship is at 99 sys damge and zero float damage. The player just sails them back to port and repairs them.

Well actually to the best of my knowledge the bombs on Franklin did not cause any floatation damage, it was only the fire fighting water and as such it was an absolutely controlled flooding, albeit very high in the ships (in the hangar).

The first bomb exploded in the hangar deck but the second penetrated much further into the ship before exploding. Most of the water used to fight the hangar deck fires flowed over the side of the ship. The second hit required that water be poured directly into the ship below the hangar deck.

A list of 13 degrees is not controlled flooding. They were pouring so much water into the ship that list-reducing efforts were ineffective. It wasn't until they had the fires out that they could turn to dewatering the spaces. In the meantime, the USS Pittsburgh took her under tow as they were only 50 miles off the Japanese coast.

Personally, I figure flooding is flooding whether caused directly by the bomb or indirectly due to fire fighting efforts as a result of the bomb hit. And when a ship as large as an aircraft carrier lists 13 degrees, that's one helluva lot of water where it shouldn't be.

Well, for that matter - torps are also. One torpedo is generally not going to put down a transport, whereas it generally was quickly fatal IRL (at least in the first part of the war, before the Allies started shock-mounting equipment.) Similarly, we will see CAs getting away with 3 torp hits - unheard of in WW2 for CAs. AFAIK, all (but maybe 2 ships) at sea never made it back to port after being hit by more than 2 (working) torps.

Admittedly, ships often did not sink after 3 torps, but couldn't get back to port because they couldn't be towed that fast (back to towing speeds again.) Follow-up attacks would generally sink the cripple before it could get out of danger.

I'm not sure about bombs, but at some point in the war, the US started using a more powerful explosive in their torpedoes. It gave them about twice the explosive power. I can't think of a way to model this in the game.

I just looked in the editor. The US has one set of torpedoes throughout the war. They have dud rates of 50%, 80%, and 60%. They don't upgrade to anything. The dud problem was partially fixed late in 42 and completely fixed in 1943.

The new explosive was torpex and it appears to only have been used on submarine torpedoes. It was introduced in late 1942. It had 50% more eplosive power than standard TNT. In game terms, the US subs should get a new torpedo starting in early 1943 that has much more eplosive power and a lower dud rate. The dud rate on other US torpedoes should go down to the 10% other torpedoes have around this time.

I was wondering if the IJN had any large fleet tugs like the USN and started poking around on the web (without much success).
 
Came across one fairly small (~50 shorter than a USN ATF) tug at the following site:

Although the tug info was not really what I was looking for there are a lot of neat photos (then and now), drawings and descriptions of the carrier raids on Truk in early 1944 for anyone that's interested.

I do notice on spence's website that most transports where sunk by a SINGLE aerial torpedo......
 
Try this in WITP, almost all transports will live when hit in port by a single torp, heck, even at SEA most survive a single hit....

Heck the Gneisenau was almost sunk by a single torpedo hit in port. Only a massive effort on the part of every support ship in port saved her. A single Beaufort scored a torpedo hit on the stern while she was out of dry dck for a short period.

I was wondering if the IJN had any large fleet tugs like the USN and started poking around on the web (without much success).

Came across one fairly small (~50 shorter than a USN ATF) tug at the following site:

Although the tug info was not really what I was looking for there are a lot of neat photos (then and now), drawings and descriptions of the carrier raids on Truk in early 1944 for anyone that's interested.

Watts lists the following Classes and vessels as Salvage tugs as opposed to Salvage Vessels if there is a difference:

"From 1930 to the end of the war many tugs were built for the imperial japanese Navy. These fall into 4 categories. Com'n mate, if they could turn to just simply dewater spaces than it must have been contolled flooding ! And I'm fairly sure no half sane DC officer would let in so much water os as to risk a capsizing...

Also you said earlier that even in this case the flooding was about 10%, noit the 40-50% usually seen in WitP...


And to niceguy: of course ships should be sunk by TORPEDOES or mines, but for sure 30kton CVs and even larger BBs should not be sunk by bombs only....

It is most certainly PBEM vs. Human. I keep track of everything. I can review to see when a ship was last hit (and with what) to approximate how badly it was hurt, and how long it will be in the yards.

Midway can happen to anyone. In this case, it happend -TO- my opponent during the last week of May '42. For my troubles, I lost HMS Indy and about 4x CLs and handful of DDs.

I had a similarly bad day vs. Erstad, and lost 7(!) Allied CVs in Oct. '42, for nary a single hit on KB.

Don't be so quick to judge Ronminator.
