here is the next report, you can see the torp hit on Mutsu.

Mutsu was already smoking before the torp hit, this indicates, that it was on 10 sys damage or even more.

the torp hit started a little fire but the fire had smoke as well, so I guess this fire level was 5 to 10. I think it will be out of action for 4 months. 1 months for travel to and from port and another 3 for repair, so we dont see her until september 42.

the reason why my bombers are silent from india is simple : those B-17s take ages to repair. some B17 units are stand silent till 6 days and got 1 plane repaired....and yes AV supp is double aviable than needed....no comment. this is war and they sleep. [8|]

I have to withdraw in this month 1 BB & 2 DDs. I think I give a s*** about it as I have the PP's aviable.

A quick update for you all...

An RN TF apparently tried to react to my landing at Babo (New Guinea) and showed up being led by none other than the BC Repulse - escorted by half a dozen CLs... Unfortunately for the RN my bombers at Amboina have been itching for a chance at the Repulse... and they got it... a full Daitai of Betties and Helens made a run at the TF. The Helens concentrated on the Repulse and they all missed - low experience and even if they would have hit, the wimpy 250kg bomb probably would have bounced off... The Betties concentrated on the Repulse as well and report 2 torpedoes hitting her, with another torpedo hitting the CL DeRuyter. The flak from the TF was intense and a bunch of planes were damaged, but I hope to have another shot at the TF as they flee -- if not, at least the Repulse will need 3-4 months of yard time for repairs - unless he sends her to the US.

In China, IJA troops pummeled a chinese HQ unit, killing over 200 men and causing it to flee. In Wuchow, the IJA troops captured the base, securing nearly 30,000 chinese prisoners from 8 units. A nice move - lots of Army Points and my units are still combat ready. Wuchow is barely hurt and will be a secure airbase for me - already has a size 3 airfield and my engineers will soon increase that to handle my Sallies and Lillies stationed in China.

Overall a good day for the Japanese.

update :

I sunk 2 transports at Merak with bombs and some other transports were hitted as well.

the surface action group aroiund BC Repulse arrived port and they will see combat again as the flooding is gone now.

I hitted a Mine at Diamond Harbour laid by subs, one DD is takeing water there.

I bombarded Lungaville (Guadalcanal) and killed 120+ japs there but before the bombard mission I sunk an AK there. bad news : 2 other DD were victims of mines as well. but they too will make port safely.

A japanese mine sweeping TF tried to clean up the sub layed minefield at Canton Isl. and they were met by USN CV's ang got mauled. 3 out of 4 sunk and the 4th will be dead soon.  Before KB arrives, I will be gone.

The so called encircled troops at Yenen are fleeing through the corridor I made. they would have been destroyed anyway sooner or later so I decided not to let Xargun get these points there.

MY bombers at india arent flying these days (5th turn in a row) becasue of rain. I cannot remember when we saw another weather there except thunderstoprms. I think even on planet jupiter are less storms then in this weather model here in the game. [8|]

Bleah.. They were empty anyways... and the rest you damaged escaped and will eventually be repaired and see battle again...

Oh well.. The Repulse will need some yard time... and I will find her again and sink her... Be a shame if a sub found her :)

About time you hit one of my mines... I have laid thousands.

Good !! Those DDs will need a month or so in the repair shop :)

I will admit, I never suspected that move.

It is true.. His troops escaped the trap at Yenen - which I now own.. But they are heading NE from Yenen and have little to no supplies, so they are easy prey for my men in the area. Their escape has already been cut off.. Now I get another unit as well.

The weather in china has been horrible - maybe 1-2 overcast days out of the last 10+. Rest have been thunderstorms or rain - severly limiting my air superiority over China. This has slowed the tempo of my advances as I prefer to bomb the turn I attack - to weaken the defenders before me men strike.

Not much else is happening although I finally took Merak - his 2 units fleeng to Batavia. Now I can unload at will at Merak and hammer Batavia. I figure at least a week to take Batavia - but his men will simply retreat south to the next base and we will fight again - oh well.. They will run out of room eventually and by then they will be completely worthless.

I would like to take Soerbaja by end of the month, but don't think I can make that deadline. I'm sure he has a lot of troops here and my men need a couple days to recover from taking Merak.

I will post more after the next turn.

June 1942

Post by Oliver Heindorf »

update : We are now at June the 5th.

what happend :

USN CVs and KB were playing cats & dogs around Pago Pago and the south pac. I think we were close and near a CV battle and we saw each other for two days. I decided to hide. I will take on them later, or he will take on me, who knows.

I figuered out how MSW TFs work...Xargun said hello to a MSW TF at Chandpur with 4 DDs, a nice surprise for me. I had 2 DDs in the MSW TF, and I lost a DD and I damaged 2 DDs. the next day, a surface action group of 1 CA, 1 CL and 4 DD caught one of those DDs previosly damaged. The leading DD Paladin sunk the jap DD within sekonds. 4 shells and one torp was enough, the jap DD didnt even said good bye.
The 2nd DD I caught by air - the previous damage made the DD slower then the 2 others left intact and the DD was found by 12 Wellinigton III. some 500lb bombs later she was greeted by the fishes as well.

all in all : I lost 1 DD and one MSW with 3 more ships damaged - japan lost 2 DDs and one is damaged.

KB is now splitt up. I expect Soryu in the yard. I saw Hiryu near Bougainville. Akagi is east of Kendari. Maybe a nice divide up to strike on KB.

Xargun destroyed a convoy near PM with carrier bore aircraft. some ships escaped but most of them are sunk.

I made a surprising attack at Rangoon flattening the airfield there with 60+ 4E bombers. I caught over 20 planes on the ground and his tiny CAP of some 6 Ki-43 Oscars was nice but useless.

in china, the situation is bad. his troops are everywhere now. Wuchow is lost, Kweilin will fall soon in the next 3 days.

BC Repulse, damaged 3 weeks ago, is doing nicely, sys damage almost gone.

another TF towards Merak was met by bombers, I damaged 3 APs heavily and a PC. the will probably sink as I scored several 500lb hits and I caught 272 enemy soldiers too on these ships.

I am just days away from significant naval reinforcements of support ships.

I developed plans with a nasty surprise I hope. more news in approx 1 game month.

From my calculations we ended up 5 hexes away... and I had all my bombers set for 4 hexes so I would carry the keel breaker torpedoes.. alas, we did not fight... We were a bit far south for me and I headed back to safer waters - was low on fuel as well and needed to dock and drain a base dry to refuel.

Never good to chase an enemy TF into their water with low fuel.

Argh [:@] What should have been a mopping up by 4 IJN DDs on some Allied MSWs turned bad... and quickly.. I did not spot the DDs there until I attacked. He sunk 1 DD outright and bombers finished off a second one - the second one may or may not have made port without the bombers so it wasn't a complete loss. IOf the 2 surviving DDs - 1 needs a couple weeks in drydock and the other one can go back out anytime I need her. The lesson I learned was I should have sent CAs instead [:D] Would have been completely different battle.

Hmmm the KB divided up ?? Only since they left PH on like Dec 12th or so. I don't believe in the uber KB Deathstar TF tactic and won't use it in a real game. 2-4 IJN CVs in a TF is plenty to kill anything I want.

Having 2 smaller KBs is much more useful than 1 uber TF. As unless I bombing Pearl or fighting the allied CVs the uber KB is way overkill... and we are at the point where he actually has some decent air groups around and I need to CAP and airfield suppression CVs can provide to cover my landings. Now when I invade OZ, I may bring the KB back together to support it... but thats at least 1-2 months off [:D]
ORIGINAL: Oliver Heindorf
Xargun destroyed a convoy near PM with carrier bore aircraft. some ships escaped but most of them are sunk.

I moved some CVs up around the southern tip of NG to hit the airfield at PM and spotted some ships. So I backed off a hair and hammered them. I beleive 6 AKs sunk and 2-3 limped away. I did not pursue then - no point from what I could tell... Let the cripples fill his repair yards.

I made a surprising attack at Rangoon flattening the airfield there with 60+ 4E bombers. I caught over 20 planes on the ground and his tiny CAP of some 6 Ki-43 Oscars was nice but useless.

He did indeed surprise me. Not only that but only like 1/3 of the assigned CAP flew. He leveled the airbase... No real permenant damage, but killed a lot of planes. And just as they air groups were getting back to strength, he came in again and hammered me... This time he actually took decent losses - a lot of damaged planes... I guess its time to pull back from Rangoon until the Tojo / Tonies are ready to kill his HBs.

Kweilin will fall of course... Especially since you just adbandoned it. I was surprised it took you that long to realize it wasn't worth lossing a dozen plus units to defend a base I will take anyways... Now I have to chase those damn chinese down through the jungle if I want to kill them.... oh well. I just want the bases.

Then bring her out to play [:'(]

His bombers mauled a small Transport TF - once more my LR CAP failed to fly at all out of Palembang... We had clear weather and no reason not to fly except they just decided they didn't want too. In the end I will lose all 4 APs and 1 of the PC guards. The unit they were carrying will need a couple months somewhere safe to regain their strength.

Does that mean you will come out and play ??? The South Pacific looks like a fun place [:D]

Ooohhh a nasty surprise... I like them... I can't wait...

JAPAN PERSPECTIVE

Well my economy is going good.. I'm saving roughly 1200 HI per turn, while running everything I need at max capacity. I am thinking of converting some military shipyards over to civilian as I never have enough merchant ship points and am increasing my military by 100+ per day. Something to think about.

I am expanding my engine production in anticipation of my new fighters coming in 7 weeks - the Tony. I have decided on the Tony over the Tojo - not 100% sure why right now, but I weighed all the numbers and decided the Tony was the way to go. The Tojo factory has been converted and expanded. By the time I am allowed to have Tonies, I will be producing them at the rate of 100+ per month, so goodbye Oscars - hello Tony.... BTW, the Oscar stats in the game suck... I always knew the Oscar wasn't as good as say the zero, but the Oscar (both models) aren't even worth anything. I thought the Oscars were the bane of the skies in Burma and such - and in the game they can't even hold their own against Buffalos.

My DDs have been upgrading and I have a bunch of them waiting to be sent out to replace damaged / upgradable ships in the field. The Yamato is also clawing at the reigns to be released.... If only I knew where the RN BBs were.. I would send the Yamato - and friends - to say hi.

My CVs are slowly accumulating sys damage and several of them are looking forward for some yard time in a month or so when they get upgrades. They will be cycled in for repairs / upgrades as they are freed up from front line duties.

My BBs are about the same way. I currently have some in for repairs and they will be recieving upgrades before they come back out. They should be ready in time to join up with the Yamato for some ship bashing fun.

Well a quick update...

Several IJN CVs were chasing what recon said was a small merchie TF north of Suva.. when WHAM... enemy CVs were spotted.. I was thinking hmm.. this might be bad.. And The US closed range and launched first...

My zeros on CAP did very well downing like 30 of the incoming planes, but enough made it through to warrant some anxiety as I watched the attacks.. Luckily he only landed a single 1000# bomb on the Junyo - although that in itself is almost enough to shut the CV flightdeck down.. Then it was my turn..

My return strike blasted past his CAP - knocking half of them out of the air and losing very few planes in return. My Kates and Vals really liked the CV Yorktown and proceeded to blew it into small pieces... In all I think I launched 3-4 waves against the enemy CVs and near the end I was mad as attack after attack "Found no target" when they attacked the Yorktown - but there were several Cruisers there that the 'Keel Buster' torpedoes could have easy found... but they insisted on looking for a sunk CV.. A few Kate drivers did put some torps into the CL Adelaide and sunk her as well but in all, only 2 ships were sunk when I should have wiped the entire TF out. I believe there is another US CV there - or nearby - as even after the Yorktown was out of the fight, there was still a decent CAP over the TF.

I believe I will head home now - I have a damaged CV that will need a couple months in the repair yards and have not lost much in the way of planes - so time to go home with a clear victory and allow the Junyo to repair and be saved. I still can't believe only a single 1000# bomb did that much damage. Not much flooding damage - so I'm sure she'll make port - but good sys damage and some decent fires... Argh.... Will probably do like 90% CAP and run for port.

With this victory the Emporer may green light other missions now that we have 2 confirmed US CVs sunk - Saratoga and the Yorktown... That should only leave him with 3 - Enterprise, Wasp and Hornet I think. Although I'm not sure when the Hornet shows up so he may or may not have her yet. Oh well.. another victory for the Emperor...

June 11th

Another slow turn with just some bombing runs - but weather has been definately on Oli's side with all sorts of storms all over china. And his Heavy Bombers are hammering my AFs in Burma - forcing me to pull back my planes or watch them get destroyed on the ground.

We are waging a very minor mining war with Diamond Harbor and the other base up there. I keep using subs to mine them and his MSWs keep cleaning them up. Today I got a victory as the PG Jasmine hit a type 88 mine and exploded.. They are still cleaning the red smear off the rest of the ships in the TF. Nothing is left of the little plywood boat.

Also, the 22nd DAF Base Force ceased to exist from attrition stuck between Amboina and Buna (I think is the name). I own both bases and have been hammering the Base Force with airpower for about 2 weeks now.. Giving my bombers some good practice.

I thought I would post an update on my economy and even include some Classified Info as well as a couple pics.

Image

Just an overall view of the points and where we stand - I blocked out the only 2 important numbers - my PPs and AS in Kwangtung.

Some Economic Stats:

Stockpiled Items:

Mitsubishi Engines: 992 Nakajima Engines: 1254
Kawasaki Engines: 109 Aichi Engines: 9
Manpower: 92919 Heavy Industry: 88148
Naval Shipyard Pts: 2101 Merchant Shipyard Pts: 217
Armament Pts: 17880 Vehicle Pts: 174

Current Production Figures:

Heavy Industry: 13658 Armament: 671
Naval Shipyard: 1294 Merchant Shipyard: 1071
Repair Shipyards: 889

I figure none of these numbers can really help Oli or hurt me as he can't do anything about them. Currently all of my Stockpiled Resources are increasing - at different rates of course - and I plan on having a huge stockpile of Manpower and HI after mid 43. After that point anything I can ship home will be a bonus and I am trying to get as much oil / resources to the Home Islands before then.

I will cover sunk ships in the next post since I can only upload 1 pic per message.

I lost another PG due to mines at Chandpur. Seems that my PGs arent  good mine hunters.

I prepare some bases and try to improve the situation there i.e. bring in ENG units and to increase the AV support. supply situation at front line bases is good , fuel situation as well. the last three turns I tested Xarguns naval recon capabilities and collected vital information.

I get now B24-Ds and Spitfires into play.

So far, Xargun is slowly growing up strengh at Java (Merak) and in china, I try to rescue my forces fled from Yenen. Kweilin is lost as well.

In Burma, the economic situation for Xargun is X' out, my bombers have a hard time to find any vital targets at all. 2nd good news there is that the 4E Bombers started their exp ratings there within the 50's and have it increased into the 70's desipte some losses now.

I lost another PG due to mines at Chandpur. Seems that my PGs arent good mine hunters.

Actually I think your PGs are doing a great job finding my mines [:D] But I thought they were supposed to find the mine and then destroy it.. but your crews are better.. they find the mine and then throw themselves on it [:'(]

I will agree Oli has bombed a lot of the resources in Burma flat, but there are still enough to make it worthwhile for me to be
there. After all Japan doesn't invade Burma for the resources - way more resources (and easier to protect) elsewhere.

Once I get my units back together and a bit of rest, I will be rolling into India. Not even his invincible 4E bombers can completely stop that. Soon his bombers won't have any bases to bomb from.

Java is mine.. Once I crack open Batavia I will roll down the rails into Soerbaja and take it all [X(]

June 12th - 16th

June 12th

Slow Day. Another Allied ship (PG Thyme) has a runin with an IJN sublaid mine in India - sinks the next day.

June 13th

A single IJN PC sinks in port from previous damage - she made it to port, only to sink there :( Not happy.. oh well.. its only a PC.

June 14th

Another RN PC hits a mine - this time the PC Cyclamen. She hits the mine deadon and explodes - nothing left. Oli sure is having a fit with these baby minefields I keep leaving at Chandpur and Diamond Harbor. I've seen more ships hit mines in the past game week than I have in the previous 6 months. Oh well.. Maybe he shouldn't be using PGs for minesweeping duty - they just aren't that good at it.

An IJN CV TF heads southeast along the PM penninsula and spots an Allied ML near Gili Gili and says hi. The ML takes several bombs but manages to survive.

June 15th

Boring day nothing special happens - other than the normal arty strikes and air strikes in china / burma.

June 16th

An IJN CV TF made its way close to PM and struck. Dozens of DBs from the fleet flew in escorted by zeros and met heavy CAP. Unfortunately the other zeros who were supposed to fly sweep missions to clear some of the fighters never launched and the CV aircraft got hit hard - over 20 Vals were shot down. The valiant pilots continued on to their targets and hit the airfield good, killing nearly 40 Allied aircraft in the air and on the ground.

Kates from the CV TF also found and finished off the ML Oglala with a couple torpedoes.

IJN troops captured Gasmata - leaving only a single Allied base left on the island of Rabaul.

Overall its been give and take with Oli. I am dishing out more than I am taking on the land / sea aspects but the heavy bombers in India are killing off my aircraft at an alarming rate - lost nearly 50 in one day - 90% caught on the ground. I'm not sure what to do. I've tried massive zero CAP - not much difference; I've tried heavy AA protection from ground units - nothing.. I guess I have to play hide and seek with him until the Tony arrives - maybe then I can shoot some of the damn heavies down - but I'm sure he has 50 or so in the pool and it will be sometime before he is low on them.

June 17 - 18

Another couple days and the war continues. I am reorganizing my land/sea/air forces and beginning another offensive campaign.

The TF that took Gasmata started reloading the units used for transport elsewhere when bombers from PM appeared. My LR CAP was tired and was stood down for a day - so the bombers came in unopposed. An APD and a PC were sunk, with another PC & 3 APs heavily damaged - all of them sunk on the 18th. Luckily a large portion of the unit was offloaded and saved.

I dropped a division off on Timor, at Koepang, and will be taking that base soon. Four Dutch units oppose me, but not much combat strength - the 2 normal units and the 2 small Forces (Gull & Sparrow) from Darwin.

Oli now has B-17s both in India and at PM - I need to do something about them soon - but I don't have any AF close enough for my Sallies / Lillies to do anything - and Betties / Nells don't carry crap for bombs.

I have several operations being planned - they are simply waiting for assets to get into position. I hope the ops i'm planning will set Oli back some more, but you never know.

Yes, another offensive will happen soon from ole Xarg. you can simply recognizing it by the turn rate he fires up. Once his plans are settled, he is eager to continue as fast as possible.

One offensive is planed against Australia, mainly directed at the Darwin area and he will start first a diversion towards Jonston Isl.

we will soon find out how each aussie soldier will fight for his Vaterland.

B-17s are lovley, as Xargun can do what he want - he cannot stop them. the taste of flattening his airfields is sweet. Bring in more aircraft boy, I eat them up.

Dont belive that I convert to B-24D's, they have lower durability and only a few more miles of ranges. You bring in more aircraft - you being eaten by B-17's. With all the Aircraft lost so far, your pilot pool must already strave from losses.

Is this so ?? Hmm.. maybe I should stop the attack on Jonston and just take Midway, Palmyra and Jonston ??? Right now I definately could take them all.. I have several divisions sitting around doing nothing and I don't think Oli would risk his few remaining CVs against mine yet.

Oh Oli... Every time your B-17s hammer an airfield I will send my Sallys deep into china.. You decide if its worth it. So just how is old Chungking doing ? Any oil left there ? Plenty of other items of interest to destroy too -- HI, Manpower, resources... hmm.. what to kill next.

Grouping roughly 150 Sallies together make an effective bombing run - as good as a group of B-17s... and the chinese fighters are as ineffective against them as my fighters are against his heavies..

update : I bombed some minor ships at the Lae area and Xargunites are storming the beach of Funafuti Island. I stll own the island but we will see how long they can hold out. other areas are quiet.

At NE of Yenen, where I have some 50000+ soldiers, we agreed that I can withdraw them : I owend the hex NE and E of my forces with a unit each for roughly a month and my LCUs failed to move a single mile due to air attacks for 4 weeks of game time...[8|]

I slowly build up strengh on forces now.

Evil Xargun captured again Funafuti Island.

I made another hit on one of his BBs near Koepang. Just four Beauforts flown the strike but I scored another torp hit on his BB fleet.

Xargun is currently running up the beaches at Pago Pago but he was met by stiff resistance - at the first night landing he had 700 casaulties. next day he lost 900 men. Then my arty fired some rounds with a bombardement attack grabbing another 700 men and then the japanese shock attacked only to be stopped coldy again - another 2000 casaulties.

The 2nd Inf Div of the IJA ceased to exist. Xargunitá caught a bloody nose - it was about time. [:D]
