Well after a month spent researching, arguing with El Cid over databases and what is and isn't possible and a very patient wait from my opponent I've started a new PBEM against jutland13. I'm going to call this AAR Chumming The Waters because the last two times we PBEMed we both had so many ships sunk within the first month that I took to making jokes about the shark population in the Pacific. I don't know how this will go as I'm going to try to put into practice everything I've learnt over my last few games ( I spent well over 40 hours on just the initial strategic plan and initial turn and even then I short-changed China) but of one thing I'm sure, it'll be bloody, Jutland13 fights like a crazed wild boar... a smart, crazed wild boar! [:D]

The first thing I'll do is describe the mini-mod I made using RHS EOS 5.14 as a basis so that people can figure out where the changes are and how they might impact things:

1. Economic:
I removed ALL supply sinks and almost all free daily supply. I only left free daily supply at Aden, a couple of places in China and CONUSA. Everywhere else has resource centres instead of free supply. That means there are going to be a lot of resources and supplies about but, as usual, the problem is shipping it back to the Home Islands.

I also added 0/0 Heavy Industry to any base with sizable resource or oil centres. This was done because I think that a more rational industrialisation policy would involve building industry closer to the resources which supply it and because if anyone disagrees with me a whole load of 0/0 HI centres don't actually have any effect in-game UNLESS a player consciously decides to expand them ( in which case he is choosing to take advantage of that option).

In order to soak up some of this excess supply I removed auto-upgrades from the game entirely... no more free upgrading of Nells to Bettys in January 42. If you want to change production now you have to pay 1000 tons of supply per point of plane production changed AND you have to wait 30 days for every 30 points of production you get. Combined with the gutting of research points, planes which had 60 or 70 research points now only have 1 or 2, this costs Japan over 3.5 million tons of supplies over the course of the game even before one begins counting the cost of expanding production of late-war planes since one no longer gets so much free production due to auto-upgrading of obsolescent models. Over the course of the game I've calculated this will cost the Japanese player between 6 and 8 million tons of supply in total and goes a huge way to balancing out the excess supplies which the removal of supply sinks generates.

2. Aerial.
The only change from RHS EOS is that the Japanese have the opportunity of building a torpedo attack version of the Me-264. It carries a single, modified Long Lance torpedo, has armour, high durability and an all-cannon defensive armament. It still gets shot down in droves when faced with intense CAP but in 1943 and early 44 ( before the Corsair arrives) it should give the Japanese the ability to increase the threat to Allied CVs and, particularly, BBs. It is expensive, costing almost as much as two Bettys but some may feel it is worth it. I do and intend to build enough of them to form the core of a special CV & BB-hunting air group.

3. Naval.
I have given the Japanese the option of building 2 more Taiho, 2 BCs and 1 more Yamato class BB. The Japanese can just about afford to build the two Taihos without massive expansion of their naval shipyards ( and will get those two CVs in mid-44... probably too late to do much good in most games) but can only afford the BCs and BB if they increase their starting naval shipyards by close to 50%. Even if they do this they won't be getting these ships before 1945.

So, in return for a couple of build options which really boil down to getting two more Taihos the Allies receive 4 more CVs, 2 in 43 and 2 in 44 and EIGHT more BBs. 2 of these are British BBs which arrive in early 42, 2 more are US which arrive in 43 and another 4 arrive in 44. So, in return for two more Taihos and the navalised Me-264 the Allies get an additional 12 capital ships. I think that's a pretty fair balance.

4. Ground forces.
I made no changes here except to fix a couple of Japanese late-war LCUs which had erroneous numbers of troops. E.g. one base force had 230 IJA infantry squads instead of 30

5. I increased the initial Political points to 18,000 and 6,000 for the respective sides. This gives the Allies the ability to move 3 divisions on 7th December and another on December 8th. In return the Japanese get the ability to properly support their assault troops with all of the costly construction Bns, AAA regiments and base forces they require in order to function well. In the end I had 7,000 points left over at the end of my turn and think Jutland13 used all of his.

6. In case the game gets to 1945 I increased the US Atomic Bomb allocation from 1 to 2 per month and extended the game into 1946 for anyone who is a real glutton for punishment

Jutland13 had sight of the scenario for several days before we began the game and as per my SOP he had refusal of any Turn 1 invasions.... I notified him in writing of where I would land on Day 1 and offered a do-over after turn 1 went in. The only landing which went somewhere I had said I wouldn't land was the result of a mis-click and actually turned into a disaster for my forces ( I speak from the perspective of having seen the 2nd turn).

House Rules:
Surprise ON.
1 Port Attack, unlimited airfield attacks.
Soviet Union active from 7th December 41 and free to launch attacks whenever it wishes.
Sub doctrine OFF.
Aden is off limits. Everything else is fair game. Since Aden is the point of appearance for reinforcements there is no risk of teleportation into Karachi and anything which makes it to Karachi has to be shipped in.
No limits on PT boats, ASW TFs or naval attacks. If B-29s can fly 30 hexes and sink CVs and you want to order it then it is fair game. It's my job to stop it.

Overall strategy:
China: Bomb its resources back into the stone age using my most obsolescent bombers and as cheaply as possible. Then push the ground troops back as starvation takes its toll.

Phillipines: Bypass it and mop it up in mid-42.

Malaysia: land at Johore Bahru on December 8th ( I informed Jutland 13 that this was my plan before beginning the game as he needed to have the option to refuse such a landing if he felt it wasn't fair.)

DEI: Take Borneo, Amboina, Kendari and Sumatra quickly. Then slowly attack Java from north and south and capture it in the first quarter of 1942.

India: Rush India. Rely on speed rather than strength. Once Singapore is threatened simply load up a couple of divisions and head for India. Add more divisions as Malaysia quietens down and transports become available. Cover the invasion with a couple of BBs, a few CVEs and two CVLs. Rely on footwork and speed for safety rather than on strength.

Pacific: Kodiak and Hawaii are essential targets. An invasion convoy will appear approximately 500 miles north-west of Pearl Harbour on 7th December and will then occupy Hilo and Kona before building up bomber bases. Bypass Midway and Johnson but sneak in a fast transport raid ( CLs and DDs) into Palmyra to take it... This is where I made my error. I accidentally forgot to set the Johnson invasion troops to rendezvous with the main fleet north-west of Pearl Harbour and so they invaded Johnson itself on Day 1... Allied CVs capitalised on this by butchering the transports and troops on Day 2.

No invasions south of Lunga on Day 1. Heavy invasion at Rabaul - two divisions worth of troops - and another fast transport group running south at maximum speed to land at Koumac. Conventional transports ( the fastest available, capable of a sustained 360 to 480 miles per day) , covered by an air combat TF, will land at La Foa on December 10th or 11th.

Soviet Union: Pray they stay out of it until I'm ready to deal with them

Turn 1 Port Strike target will be Manilla. I am going to hit Manilla with every single Japanese bomber available, except the Ki-36 Idas which are tasked to the China Expeditionary Army. My targets are the submarines in Manilla Harbour. If I can sink them I can do a great deal to protect my merchant shipping, the critical weak point in the Japanese forces in RHS EOS... You simply never have enough shipping.

Ok well the objectives for Day 1 are as follows:

1. Sink as much of the shipping in Manilla as possible. Destroying planes on the ground is very much a secondary mission. I have therefore tasked all of my Sallys ( some 240 of them), 70 Kates, 230 Ki32s and another 60 or so Ki-48s with Port Attack missions against Manilla. Many of them are flying at extreme range and with reduced bomb loads but I'm hoping the sheer mass of planes involved will make up for this.

90 Nells will hit Manilla airfield while another 100 Bettys will hit Clark airfield. All of this will be covered by 60 Zeroes. Most of my strikes will go in without fighter cover as I have more important missions for my fighters elsewhere and am willing to tolerate the loss of a few single-engined bombers.

2. Cover my Johore Bahru invasion fleet. I have assigned 2 BBs, 4 CAs, 3 separate destroyer flotillas and 3 CVEs and 2 CVLs to this mission. I am sending 130,000 men to Johore in the first wave with another 50,000 following 2 days behind so I need to make sure these men are safe. In addition I have some fast transport TFs in the mix ready to sprint to Palembang, Merak and elsewhere in the DEI in order to begin the process of isolating Sumatra from Java.

3. Begin bombing the resources in China.

4. Hit the airfield at Pearl Harbour to prevent it interfering with my invasion fleet. I am going to try to hit it in such a way as to minimise my losses. To this end I am going to hit it from very close range with only my Kates. As level bombers at high altitude they should suffer very few losses. Once Pearl's airfield is bombed into the stone age and I take Hilo and Kona the surface fleet will either have to try to run for it or will have to come out and fight. Knowing Jutland13 he will come out and fight, which is why I have 6 BBs escorting this portion of my force. I expect to see several BBs on both sides sink within the first week of this game. In our previous, non-AARed, PBEM with RHS we had at least a half-dozen full on fleet engagements in the first week which left 8 US BBs sunk and 6 of mine docked at Kona with 60+ sys damage.

I wanted to test how well my Zeroes would fare against AVG. Of course this being a sweep against an unprepared AVG all the odds were in my favour. Still, I think that a 1:1 exchange rate can be achieved and that's good enough for me.

264 bombers carrying 50 Kg bombs and 84 carrying a single 250 Kg bomb each attacked the harbour at Manilla and managed to score 295 hits on enemy shipping. Particularly hard hit were the enemy PTs and submarines. The 11 planes lost are an entirely acceptable cost.

Amazingly even though only 1/4 of the Bettys assigned to the mission actually flew they still managed to destroy 18 enemy airplanes and at far less cost than the Nells. I don't see much difference between them in the statistics but Bettys do definitely perform better than Nells in RHS. They are much more survivable, a key point for any Japanese player.

Overall by the end of the first day over 450 Allied aircraft had been destroyed, 360 on the ground and another 60 in the air plus several more to FlAK, 50 or so Allied ships had been sunk, including 24 submarines at Manilla and all of my landings except the one at Johnston had ended up where they were supposed to end up.

So far so good. The problem is that the landing at Johnson is going to force me to change my plans around Hawaii for the next 3 or 4 days until I can stabilise the situation at Johnson. NOT something I wanted to be doing

Well, well, well. We went with the Soviets being active from 7th December 41 but all our discussions had focussed on the idea that it wasn't in the Soviet's interest to attack early on. I'm not sure if this is just a probe or intended to be a prelude to a full-scale assault so what I will do is assume it is the latter AND, if it is the former, fashion the lesson so that it is not easily forgotten.

The key to preventing a series of border skirmishes, throughout history, has always been that if you want the border skirmishes to stop you need to make such an example of those involved in the first one that fear stays the hand of all other would-be skirmishers. This is as true today as it was in the days of the Roman Empire. So, two airbases were hit and thus I will limit my response to four airbases... cementing the doctrine that any attack will receive a response in greater strength than it itself massed... The attack massed, roughly, 100 fighters and 100 bombers. I will therefore hit back with 400 fighters and 400 bombers tomorrow... a proporionate ratcheting up of the pressure. The attacks won't be very effective because most of my bomber groups are quite fatigued but it will communicate that I am too strong for the Soviets to take on right now AND, very importantly, that I'm willing to meet any attacks with a much larger but still proportionate response... The fact that my response is proportionate is key since I do not wish, for political reasons, to hit the Soviets so hard that they have nothing to lose by going to a full war footing.

So long as they are hurt badly enough to dissuade them from further attacks but not so badly that they have nothing further to lose by commencing a ground war I will consider my goals achieved. If they are set on a ground war then I will simply have to bomb their resource centres into the stone age. Once shorn of their supplies their forces will not be able to accomplish much of note on the field of battle. It will stretch my forces in the initial stages of the war but I am confident that so long as my front does not break under the first rush that I can hold interminably.

Now all that remains is to see if Jutland13 has read the same barbarian histories as I have and understands the message I'm sending by hitting the Soviet Union with only one third of my possible bomber force.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/09/41

As expected losses to the accelerated landing programme continue to be high. Unfortunately a few mistakes ( I forgot to avoidant-route 2 convoys) are punished with mid-ocean intercepts. My ship losses continue to climb but, at least, a few enemy ships are accompanying them. So far given the accelerated pace of the attack the losses have been acceptable.

Hmm, these are surface raiders from Pearl. Obviously they are trying to escape southward as as at least one of the US CVs. It looks like NZ, OZ and, in the final extremity, India are being prepared for stoic defence. That's fine. I'll concentrate on the slow BBs. I can kill these CAs, CLs and DDs whenever they do show up around Oz... and I think they will be too late to really influence matters in India.

An Allied CV catches one of my AOs at extreme range. I have many more ships ( the PH invasion fleet) about 12 hexes west of this CV at Midway... hopefully it will miss them... Wow, what a surprise to see Ron take a potshot [8|]... Of course the real surprise would be him being constructive instead of attempting to be destructive.
 
My opponent and I have agreed on these invasions, I sent him a list of places I would invade on Turn 1 prior to doing the turn and gave him the option of a restart after viewing Turn 1. So, I was fair and honest with my opponent and he could have asked for any of these invasions not to happen ( and I would have abandoned those ones). He didn't and expressed satisfaction with the first couple of turns. That is what matters, I play this game for the enjoyment of my opponent and myself, not to conform to Ron Saueracker's ideals of what the world should be like.
 
In any case in the DEI I didn't land past the Singapore/Kendari/Amboina line. In the Pacific I didn't make any significant landings westward (except in the Aleutians). Baker etc were all in transport range of my paras at Palau and thus they were used for most of those landings and I used Guadalcanal as the southern limit of my shipping movements around Oz. There are many games which feature advances far beyond these limits on turn 1.

Hello again Nemo, Is there anywhere your not invading right now [:D], It sure looks like a bloodfest will continue for quite some time. Does RHS add a lot more japanese troops ? or are the divs your flinging about the pacific come from the postponed PI venture ?.

I have never understood how you can write so much in these AAR's of yours , you posting turns and commentating while listing to the patients in the chair ? [:D]. I guess if they are screwy enough they won't notice .. hehe .

Anyhoo, looks like this will be a another of your must read AAR's ( that team game looks a bit too confusing for me .. i'm old and slow ).

But Ron , how can anything be an abuse if both parties agreed it beforehand and want a completely non-historical game, horses for courses and all that.

Hi Rob[:)],

Yes the vast majority of these troops are coming from the postponed Phillipines adventure.

Essentially I am hitting Malaysia with 6 divisions, hitting the DEI with Brigades and NLFs and that frees up 4 divisions for operations elsewhere.

2 Divisions + 1 Brigade are hitting Kodiak, 1 Brigade hit Rabaul ( along with a few NLFs and Naval Guard units) and Fiji and Pearl are each being hit by a division. Where have the extra 2 division equivalents come from? Well, Japan starts with enough PP to free up a few divisions and in my mod I increased the starting PPs for both the Allies and Japanese to allow a bit more redeployment on turn 1.

Do bear in mind though that I've skimped on a lot of invasions in order to make the ones I DO launch a lot stronger than normal. I think that, overall, it'll go better and quicker for me to launch two invasions in series with full committment of troops to each than two invasions at the same time and splitting the troops.

Skipping the Phillipine invasion frees up a LOT of troops for other operations which can be achieved much more quickly in 1941 than in late 42. To be fair though the additional PPs help a lot... My opponent had perusal of the mod for some time prior to beginning of the game. I think he has ordered 3 divisions to sea already so the increased ability to reinforce works both ways... this is one reason I am in such a rush to slaughter the shipping off DEI.

As to the question of whether or not RHS EOS adds more japanese troops?
Hmm, not really. In some areas it reduces the numbers. What it does add is a lot of "Garrison units" with 40/40 exp and morale and about 80 AV... I have hit upon the idea of landing them with my invasions fleets as garrisons so that the assault troops are freed up for further assaults and that is helping a lot. I'll be able to hit my phase 2 targets a fortnight more quickly due to this optimisation.

And as to where I get the time. After a day at work the thought of discussing strategy impersonally is relaxing [8D]. 8 hours+ of listening to an almost-endless run of drug addicts try to manipulate benzodiazepines or muscle relaxants out of me ( and I'm sure you can imagine how unsuccesful they are at that [:D] ) with the occasional call to security or the police to throw them out of the building when they threaten to or try to attack me makes the forum look downright relaxing... On a funny note the most original threat made toward me last week was by one addict whom I had had the police called on in order to take him to their cells for the night who threatened to anally rape me "like Jack the Ripper"

. So, to me ( so long as it doesn't get personal) this is relaxing.

All stats are exactly the same except:
1. Bomb load replaced by a single Navalised Long Lance torpedo.
2. All machineguns replaced by cannons... in order to maximise its defensive power when trying to break through enemy CV CAP.
 
Range, speed etc are all the same. In the face of massive CAP it dies readily BUT if you have enough escorts it does get through and every hit is quite devastating. A BB will take 5 hits, a CV often only 2, usually not more than 3.

Here's the picture of the G9M. Basically what I did was gave it a Long Lance 24 inch torpedo ( weighing abou 6,000 lbs) since WiTP can't handle a plane carrying multiple torpedoes. The thinking behind this was as follows: 4 x 18 inch torpedoes ( the originally intended torpedo loadout ) weigh a bit more than 7,000 lbs and the plane's payload is listed as about 18,000 lbs so assuming about 1 to 2,000 lbs of hardening required to make the Long Lance capable of surviving being air-dropped the Long Lance could replace the 4 x 18 inch torpedoes. A single Long Lance is significantly less devastating than the 4 x 18 inch torpedoes but it was the best compromise I could come up with short of just creating a new weapon system which had accuracy and effectiveness ratings determined by the assumption that 2 out of the 4 x 18 inch torpedoes carried would hit. While this would result in a more devastating strike if they hit it would also be open to a lot of debate as to assumptions and methodology so I decided that the simplest thing to do would be to just assume that the authorities would decide to design the Navalised Me-264 to carry a single weapon, namely the largest and most effective torpedo in the Japanese arsenal albeit heavily modified in order to survive aerial delivery.

One house rule is essential for this weapons system and that is that the G9M cannot be allowed to make torpedo runs in extremely shallow water as the air-dropped Long Lance would tend to go much, much deeper than the 18 inch torpedoes used at Pearl Harbour and would thus hit the bottom and be rendered useless. This is so even if the Pearl Harbour modifications were applied to the Long Lance. For this reason the G9M is banned from making port attacks as a percentage of these attacks would be torpedo runs and this cannot be allowed as it would be a breach of Newtonian Physics ( one of the few limiting parameters I wholeheartedly feel we should all accept in-game).

Obviously if WiTP were ever able to accomodate multi-torpedo loadouts then the G9M could be introduced into any RHS EOS mini-mod with its previously intended loadout of 4 x 18 inch torpedoes and would become a much more effective torpedo bomber. As to the 2 x 250Kg bombs... Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about that. They are a game default loadout. If you have a Japanese plane which carries torpedoes ( whether that be 1 or many) the game defaults to giving them 2 x 250Kg bombs at extended range.

The only other change I made to the EOS Me-264 was to give the G9M an all-cannon defensive armament. Admittedly the Japanese didn't begin thinking of all-cannon defensive armaments until a couple of years later but my thinking was as follows:

1. Given the range of the G9M ( 33 hexes normal range) even the most blinkered Admiral would realise that it would be required to fly unescorted strikes AND the Japanese had experimented with "gunship" versions of the Betty over China so there was a group in the IJN which was in the sway of the Douhetian concept of the unstoppable bomber force which would have specialist "escort bombers" which would be cannon-armed and prosecute to drive off enemy fighters.

2. A single Long Lance modified for air-dropping takes up less weight than 16 x 250 Kg bombs so there should be some free weight to play with.

3. While the G9M wouldn't be an escort bomber it WOULD conform to what happened in US thinking over Europe in which, by the end of the war, EVERY bomber was so well-armed that it was more heavily armed than the escort bombers which were envisioned before the war.

So, given those 3 factors AND my belief that if they were envisioning the plane as a CV and BB-killer that they wouldn't skimp on anything which was likely to let it fight its way through the enemy CAP I decided to give it an all-cannon armament. I didn't give the plane any more cannons or even the best cannons available. I just picked the same cannon as the Me-264 and several others bombers were fitted with and added it at each location.

Feedback welcome... I will point out that this design is, obviously, a series of compromises between reality, what the game allows AND a Japanese government which is judging things in a much more pragmatic sense.

Oh and major thanks go to BigJ62... As those who have followed my posts know I don't do praise. I consider lightly given praise to be an insult BUT WITP Editor X is a breath-taking piece of work which I encourage ANYONE who has any interest in modding WITP to look into. Using the old editor it would have taken me a long time to implement any changes whereas using his editor one can make all sorts of changes easily and test out variants. Just this morning, for example, I added a new plane and the Rurhstahl SD 1400 to the game and tested them against Allied CVs and BBs with only a few minutes work... Now playing around with what-ifs may not be to everyone's taste but it is just an example of how much more quickly and safely ( due to the error-checking) one can work using WITP Editor X.

I figured a graphic to explain the first week's planned events would be useful so here goes:

1. Northern Area:
Construction Bns and Base Forces land on most of the unoccupie Aleutian islands. In the meantime a large convoy of over 70 ships) heads for Kodiak where it will land 2 divisions and the elite Imperial Guards Brigade in order to destroy the 2 Allied regiments defending this base. Once Kodiak falls into Japanese hands it will be fortified to the maximum extent possible and serve as a springboard for future operations against Alaska and Canada and the proposed strategic bombing campaign against America commencing in early 1943.

2. Eastern Pacific:
Johnston Island was invaded by mistake on Day 1 and I've lost lots of ships and over 1.5 regiments of men due to this. Palmyra and Wake were invaded as planned.

Every effort will be made to have KB, its replenishment fleet and a small force of ultra-fast transports dance around Pearl Harbour attacking the airfield for the first few days and then following up with port attacks. After a large number of minor combatants and non-combatants have either fled or being sunk trying to flee I will launch the first Kate-led torpedo attacks. I detest losing Kates in the face of the immense FlAK at Pearl Harbour but so long as I can be sure most of the minor ships which traditionally waste these torpedoes are gone I will order one or two port attacks.

3. Eastern Australia.
Rabaul, Lunga and New Caledonia will be taken during the first week. My forces tasked for New Caledonia will be carried from Japan in my fastest available transports and thus should be able to sprint to New Caledonia from Lunga ( where they will start) in 2 to 3 days. As these transports are so vital to my continued amphibious operations I will cover them with a CVL.

In the meantime a reinforced Brigade will land at Fiji with a view to destroying any opposition there and allowing me to reinforce the island and build it up as a bomber base at a later date.

Port Moresby will be invaded once Rabaul has fallen.

4. Phillipines.
An army Brigade and a Replenishment regiment ( weak, 40/40 unit with about 80 AV but the combat power of only an SNLF) will take Cagayan and use it to interdict any shipping fleeing from Manilla.

Manilla's port will be hit by approximately 500 bombers on the first day in order to destroy the submarine fleet based there. Apart from this only minor spoiling actions will be ordered against Allied forces in the Phillipines for the next couple of months.

5. China will, very much, be a holding theatre until such time as strategic bombing and strategic misdirection take their effects. Later on in 1942 the situation in China will change very rapidly indeed.

6. Northern Oz.
I will create some bases in Northern Australia in order to conduct strategic bombing in other areas of Australia.

7. DEI and Malaysia.
Landings will occur at Johore Bahru and Singora to squeeze Allied forces between two forces and to capture Malaysia as quickly as possible.

In addition about 100 AV of troops will be landed at Merak in order to prevent the Allied reinforcement of Palembang.

8. Burma.
Burma is irrelevant if India falls and attempting to take Burma before taking out India merely lets India be reinforced. So long as I take care to prevent any possibility of the British forces in Burma being evacuated by sea I can ignore Burma until India is cut off.

Admittedly the Allies can fly troops out but every day they do that is one more day in which China loses all that supply.

9. India.
Japanese forces will land at Ceylon and will then hop northward along the coastline toward Karachi, creating Betty and Nell bases all along the coast in order to prevent reinforcements arriving from Aden.

My concept is that with India starved of reinforcements and with Japanese forces having control of the sea ( and thus an irrevocable advantage in terms of operational and strategic level manoeuvrability) that I will be able to leverage both these force and manoeuvrability advantages into forcing a rapid conclusion to the campaign.

Unfortunately we've had some weird technical problems with the 11th December turn. For some reason combat reports, combat animations etc seem to be turned off and whenever I try to run the file and click on naval TFs the game stops responding after I click on the first three or four. Jutland is going to redo the turn and see what happens. Anyone ever experience anything similar?

My Armed Merchant Cruisers perform quite poorly in this engagement but they do protect the transports and thats the main thing. Jutland's an outrageously aggressive player. I have a daitai of Nells basing out of Wake Island with a fully working airfield and enough aviation support to let them fly as required. This was only a testing attack by a single battalion. The Allies remain significantly overmatched at Singora.

With the sinking of an additional 30 ships today the total of Allied ships sunk has reached 122. Unfortunately due to erroneous dispositions 20 Japanese ships have also been lost. Still, assuming the Allied BBs can still be cornered at Pearl Harbour these losses will be acceptable and will go some way to ensuring the rapid fall of the DEI and preventing the Allies from mounting a succesful naval evacuation of Burma.

Well we re-ran the December 11th turn a few times due to bugs associated with 1.802 .... and I ended up upgrading to 1.804 to get rid of the bugs.

One of the weird things which happened was that we got no combat animations, combat reports or combat summaries at all. Hopefully this doesn't continue as I had the unenviable delight of having to sit and watch over 100 planes take off from Pearl and attack half of KB without being able to see the outcome until after the turn had ended.

So, here's the basic update.
1. KB was attacked by several waves of bombers and dive-bombers from Pearl Harbour. Their morale was poor so after sustaining moderate losses most of the bombers broke off and it appears that only a single torpedo hit one of my ships, causing very light damage. None of the carriers were badly damaged but losses in Zeroes were quite heavy. A retaliatory strike on PH cost me 39 planes, 31 Vals and 8 Kates but almost 100 Allied planes were destroyed on the ground and the airfield is, once again, closed for business.

No sign of the Allied BBs yet. I think they are still lurking in Pearl Harbour itself. I'm going to try a high-level Kate level-bombing attack to cause some system damage before I begin my amphibious landings at Hilo/Kona.

2. There were LOADs of air raids by my Bettys and Nells around DEI. Between the air raids and some night surface action at Wewak two Allied CLs were sunk just north of Soerabaja and a few DDs were sunk just west of Balikpapan. It looks like the noose has closed and the Allied surface ships which were enjoying their slaughter of my unescorted convoy north of Borneo ( unescorted by mistake) are going to get their comeuppance.

3. A large gaggle of freighters is also trying to escape from Manilla... which would be amusing if it weren't so futile.

4. In other news the Allied attempt to escape northward from Malaysa has been defeated by the 2.5 divisions at Singora and tank regiments landed at Johore Bahru are already racing northward to prepare the way for a speedy trip northward once Singapore is taken.

5. Major dogfights occurred over Rangoon with 80 Zeroes tangling with 40 P40s and 20 Buffaloes. It would appear that about 10 Zeroes and 30 Allied planes were destroyed in the fighting. In the meantime heavile escorted raids ranged out from Rangoon to attack Tavoy. The Oscars did their best but many of the heavy bombers got through and Tavoy is now almost closed to business. I have flown two further Zero Daitai in with the result that almost 150 fighters now defend Tavoy. The next such raid will not succeed and I will begin the destruction of any naval evacuation forces at Rangoon.

6. That's about it really. My landing force at Kodiak is about to be badly mauled by Allied carrier forces BUT it will have achieved its primary mission, landing the 60,000 men of the invasion force so its losses will be well worth it, especially given that they shouln't be all that devastating given the weather in this area at this time of year.

Really that's about it apart from the usual Jutlandian fighting tooth and claw everywhere. With over 130 Allied ships and 30 Japanese ships and 860 Allied planes and 290 Japanese planes ( about 160 of them lost to FlAK) destroyed already I think we will handily reach my target of 250 Allied ships and 1500 Allied planes destroyed in the first month of war. I feel that this will greatly aid me in achieving a rapid concentration of force against India.
