I don't know for certain, but I'm still getting the sense that the smart money is on sometime this week. Now, that's not a promise, since I have zero control over this -- it's just what seems probable.

In the meantime, people should be channeling all the energy they're putting into asking about the game's release and using it to write up bios of generals!

[:D]I have just finished reading all the FOF forum and updated screenshots. I never liked the "container" idea from COG as it was ambiguous and sorely lacking the needed explanation/layout of this whole new "concept", especially when 99% of the first turn was trying/hoping to get your "containers" together without understanding why some never jelled etc...
On the other hand i hope i am correct in assuming([X(]) that this has been streamlined/improved since the early COG days. After all, it would be a shame to let my many hours of "learning/banging my head" go to waste when i had COG on my computer...

One of our play-testers was my 10-year-old nephew and he had no trouble with the way containers work. So I doubt anyone needs to worry about this.

Except perhaps my son, who is six years old and English is his 4th language, after Spanish, French, and Catalan. He has plenty of other computer games, but I don't think he's ready for Forge of Freedom yet...

I think part of the issue with containers was that they were used to model the invention of the doctrine of organizing with the corp. That led to a need to build new containers and reformulate each army. While fairly realistic, it was a level of micromanagement that many did not relish. While the container system itself is largely unchanged, the initial composition is much closer to the desired state so that you find yourself doing less of the restructuring. The one major exception to this is the Army of the Potomac - which is actually 3 armies in this game (making a unified command difficult). However, the limits are established such that adding corps does not alter the overall number of brigades that can be supported within an Army for the USA, so the organization activity is just moving divisions between armies instead of a complete restructuring with the addition of new corp elements.

Personaly, I still like the concept of containers because it allows armies of varying sizes to be established and then combined and divided relatively easily. I also tend to like being able to associate leaders with various commands in a way that permits someone to be relieved of command or replaced without having to restructure the entire unit - just remove one leader and add a new one in his place. Where I think it could be improved is in better associating the one officer who commands each container - currently you can associate multiple generals with any rank to any container. And I wish officers could be assigned directly to brigades themselves instead of having to stack them in the container in which the brigades sit. But on the whole, I think the system gets more right than it does wrong and it gives a lot more flexibility than is found in most wargames.

I play lots of different types of games of all genres, and I am always amused at how FPS and MMORPG people think they are "sup3r l33t" (super elite). From all my experience, it is Wargamers that are the most hardcore. I mean, what other group of gamers literally spends hours on the forums/homepages of a developer, pressing refresh constantly, hoping to see the release of a game that 1. 90% of the world doesn't know about, and 2. Is about subject matter that 90% of the world doesn't know about (that one really pains me as a history professor). The attention to detail, the vast knowledge of every aspect of any particular battle/weapon/unit/general are all part of the grognard's repertoire.

Grognards make hardcore MMORPG players look like babies. MMORPG players may know loot tables and spawn rates, but do they know attrition rates, logisitics numbers, hit ratios, weather effects, morale bonuses, troop levels, ordanance types, etc...

That is why I will always believe that Wargamers are the smartest, most hardcore, and hardest people to please on the net! Fight on Grognards, Fight on!

I'm sitting here trying to write up my term papers for my MBA finals and I can't stop refreshing the damn screen every 3 minutes or so! I'm like some kind of addict! I wish I had the strength to tell myself that I'd check back in a week or so, when I know it would be out, but no such luck!

And I agree with Son_of_Montfort-we are the most hardcore!

I think Matrix is in New York, if so I would guess they close at five, however if memory serves me Digital River is based out of Minnesota so you have to add that into the mix as well.

You HAVE cliff notes for this monster?! If so, wow, that's an ecclectic library. Luckily its only 200ish pages and its the same narrative as all "general" histories of the Church. Fractured church to Gregory the Great. Papal Monarchy till 4th Lateran. Fight against heresy till 1400's. Struggle against secular authority until king's win in reformation.

At least that is what I am getting so far. Then I will probably move on to Julius Kirshner's the Origin of the State in Italy 1300-1600.

I have very varied comp fields.

Matrix is run by computer guys and gamers. Do you really think they'd stop working at 5:00? (Or did you mean a.m.?) Anyway, David Heath is based in New York, but the others are spread out across multiple continents.
