Rape of Nanking video

Post by spence »

I just watched a video/documentary on the Rape of Naking on Google Videos (should have posted the link - sorry bout that). Some interesting stuff on the fighting around Shanghai and Nanking in it, but a lot of it is just plain pretty gross...really gross in fact.

Deer Son,
I am writing this slow because I know you can't read too fast. We don't live where we did when you left. Your Dad read in the paper that most car accidents happened within twenty mile of home, so we moved. I can't send you the address as the last Newfie family that lived here took the numbers with them for their next house so they wouldn't have to change their address.
This place has a washing machine, but the first day I put four shirts in it, pulled the chain and haven't seen them since.
It rained only twice last week - three days the first time and four days the second.
About the coat you wanted me to send you. Aunt Sue said it would be a little too heavy to send in the mail with them heavy buttons, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.
We got a bill from the funeral home and it said that if we didn't make the last payment on Grandma's funeral, up she comes.
About your sister - she had a baby this morning. I haven't found out whether it's a boy or a girl, so I don't know if you are an aunt or an uncle.
Your Uncle John fell in the whiskey vat. Some men tried to pull him out, but he bravely fought them off and drowned. We cremated him and he burned for three days.
Three of your friends went off the bridge in their pick-up. One was driving and the other two were in the back. The driver got out - he rolled down the window and swam to safety. The other two drowned - they couldn't get the tailgate open.
Aunt Mabel is knitting you some socks. She would have sent them by now, but I told her that you had grown another foot since she last saw you, so she has to knit another one.
Not much more news this time. Nothing much has happened.
Love,
Mom [/align]

Hard to understand how a society can develop and condone such behavior.

Did read a book about it recently...horrifying stuff.

http://www.amazon.com/Rape-Nanking-Iris-Chang/dp/0141007885/sr=1-1/qid=1167911250/ref=sr_1_1/002-7521771-6332832?ie=UTF8&s=books

Like 2 IJA officers competing which one can lop off more heads with their swords etc...

At least the Germans apologise and made compensation. The Japanese - made weak apologies and no compensation - even now.

Good book.

Emphasizes the de-humanizing effects of war.

I just finished watching it, thanks for the heads up Spence.

I was pretty familiar with the story (I thought) but I never knew all the details talked about here - nor how heavily involved Hirohito was, and how most of the higher ups got off scot-free.

I did know that this was (sadly)repeated over and over where ever the Japanese Military went all during the Second World War.

I guess I have no more to say about it that should be posted here.

Heinous...

Despicable as the Japanese actions were, it's actually pretty interesting to look at the film itself and the techniques it uses to convey its message.

If it wasn't a historical fact that the Japanese murdered millions of Chinese, I'd be seriously doubtful as to the veracity of the film. It's horribly propagandistic.

Not really. Nanking....even in China (where the worst of the IJA was brought out time and again) was pretty unique. (Thankfully) The book lays it all out in grisly detail. Even some of the participants arn't real sure on why things got so out of hand. (enough to shock even ardent Nazis)

The video is cobbled together from many different clips, one of which is the old Battle of Britain footage of two Spitfires doing a wing-over.

Another clip shows Turkish troops firing artillery during WWI.

I agree, and the footage of Spitfires (and the like) is counterproductive because it makes one want to laugh and scorn at a very serious subject, but unfortunately the rest is all too true.

I was referring to the pattern of incidents - not the vast scale necessarily.

Ah.....i've only read the book....havn't seen the video. [:)]

Ok....just wanted to clarify. Last thing we need is yet another thread reinforcing stereotypes. (i.e. bloodthirsty japs running around left and right cuttng off heads) Speaking of which....Clint's latest movie is generating quite the buzz.

I'd actually like to see that one. Not particularly eager to see Flags of Our Fathers, but Letters might be interesting...

Really? Why is that?
I haven't seen the movie - seriously doubt I ever will ...(without failure, I have been let down or otherwise unimpressed with just about everything Hollywierd has been putting out for a long time now, and I'm no real fan of Eastwood these days either)

So what's the buzz?

Letters from Iwo Jima is the companion to Flags of Our Fathers, and is told entirely from the Japanese point of view.
