The game (so far) does not allow fast enough movement in "jungle area" without having trails, but if trails cause too much movement of supply, that too would be ahistorical.[&:]

There is not too much difference in the game between "cross country" jungle movement and "trail" jungle movement. What is different is the amount of supply which will make the move.

From the narrative posted above, the Japanese commander had planned on a 10 day trip from Buna to PM..How long does it take in the game?..I have seen units take a month, and that is flawed..
This I agree with your assessment. I find it strange that a unit can retreat 60 miles in on day through any terrain and in supply units take months.

I wonder if a unit loses any of its' heavy equipment(artillery), or how much disruption it suffers in so doing?..In some games, if a unit were prevented from a retreat due to terrain, the unit might suffer tremendous losses or even "surrender"?Since the ground scale is so large, I suspect neither hinder units in WITP, but a retreat of 60 miles in rough terrain is an interesting question to ponder..

I hate abstractions, but really - have some sympathy for the coders - please. IF a unit is to retreat at all - it can harly retreat less than one hex! Since a unit that retreats is substantially disorganized - you can abstract it into "strung out" and "en route to the next hex - this is where it will reassemble."

Some changes in movement rates may be possible. GG loves conditional die rolls - and surely vehicles in various forms (motorized support, engineer vehicles, army vehicles) could be severely restricted. Since a "trail" actually means "secondary road" in most cases - perhaps they should not be forbidden - particularly as trails can be upgraded IRL (see the photo on p 111 of Victory in Paupa - not just to show a jeep - but the trail - which clearly could handle a truck - at 12 feet wide - which is 50% MORE than a secondary road in the area today). I would love for it to be harder for vehicles - and that would make pack units show their advantages in rough terrain. But I don't see how a retreat can be done unless a whole new routine were written? [Retreating towards 40,41??? But still in this hex?]

Lots of stuff occurs "under the hood" which is undocumented. I would not be surprised if heavy gear does not tolerate bad things well. I note that I cannot keep the guns of Fort Drum operational!!! They may be the last to go IRL - but code wants to kill heavy things!
