i'll add, due to heavy flak losses on Dec 7 of 50 aircraft, the Allies lost 3 to 1 in aircraft on turn 1 - now only 2 to 1, and hopefully it will be even less on Dec 9 (upcoming turn).

The Penguinista war machine continued to take advantage of the Allied shipping caught scattered in the China Sea, sinking several AKs and the AP Benjamin Harrison - so far the most valuable Allied ship sunk at 11 pts. Some Allied shipping was also scuttled when Guam fell.

In turn, at least 2 IJN ships have been hit by subs, and 2 by mines. The Repulse and 2 DDs took advantage of heavy thunderstorms and raided the landings at Kuching, hitting several AKs and APs, with 2 confirmed sunk... i suspect several more ships have been sunk or will sink shortly. About 600 troop casualties were recorded in the 2 separate encounters the Repulse TF made with the unescorted troop convoy. The second attack broke off strangely - just ended in mid combat without mention of TFs breaking off, or anything like that... the Repulse still had quite a bit of ammo:

The PI Blitzkrieg...

The following is the force that has landed at Lingayen as of 12/8/41. It is a sizable force, about 2,700 AV. The question is how best to respond to this invasion.

A couple of things occur to me. First is it is curious that Japan opted to deposit what I assume is the bulk of its invasion force at a defended beach. Typically, I would choose to land at Aparri, which is undefended in CHS, capture the port and disembark my forces in relative safety. The choice of putting all the troops at Lingayen tells me that Japan wanted to attack a more forward base and land where it could use rail lines to move quickly on the attack.

So how does one defend against a blitzkreig manuveur? I can think of two ways.

1. Guess where it is going to attack and get there with enough force to blunt the assualt
2. Flank the force and attack its supply lines, if left exposed.

neither of these options look good considering the vast majority of my troops have an experience level of 35 to 40.

OK - this is based on the combat replay stuff - we still don't have the turn back yet. i have combined various attacks and landings to try to compress things a bit...

Some hard knocks received by the Allies: key facilities at Kuching, Kuantan, Miri, Rabaul, and Lingayen were lost, as was the Boise... the slaughter of Allied shipping attempting to retreat from the China Sea continues.

But the Animals also received some bruises: the force that sunk Boise was cut up badly by Marblehead and friends, and IJN shipping suffered from the combined effects of numerous bombing raids, mines, and a PT attack.

Just a couple of points to add...Marblehead and company were lucky. Yamashiro apparently had expended most of her main gun ammo. Only one 14" shell hit Marblehead, while numerous 5" shells struck but failed to pierce her armor.

None the less after quite a lot of fighting the TF is banged up and there is a CVL in the area.

As to PI, shoot and scoot was the order of the day. I will try not to face the IJA headon unless it is at the place of my choosing.

Hi all,

Just a couple fo thoughts from the US point of view of the Allies.

I think CHS does reperesent the general unpreparedness of the US for the onset of War.

Most of the LCU's and airgroups I have in the US need to be brought up to strength and/or modernised.

As such during these early days i'm mainly moving my subs around (PI, Malaya, Ceram, Borneo in SRA), and am now beginning to form convoys on the WC to load supplies and fuel for Pacific Islands and ultimately Noumea/Fuji. We deem it crucial to hold these places.

My CV's are to meet and form 2 x 2 CV TF's. LExingotn and Enterprise are way south of PH heading east. Yorktown is moving from Panama north towards WC whilst Saratoga is at San Francisco for now. These will probably move to the South Pacific.

With so many squadrons on WC already i'm thinking of transporting 10-12 of these to Niceguy and Austrlaia. This is to be decided yet.

In due course I will garrison key Pacific Islands, move into the Aleutians from Dutch Harbour/Cold Bay and move substantial forces to Noumea.

Royal Navy Leftenant Geoffrey Miller scraped the point of his dulled pencil with his pocket knife into a slightly more sharpened condition, and stared at the song he had written in his diary:

Out of the hot and rainy night came the British ship Repulse
Let every salvo fly so true, Let no shells play us false!
We have to sink the Japanese, those terrors of the seas
And make them pay so dearly from the guns of our BCs...

He scratched his head... the lyrics needed work, but the tune was good. He carefully crossed out "terrors" and replaced it with "vermin". He sighed. The waiting while the small task force raced through the rain and occasional violent thunderstorms was wearing on his nerves. Writing in his diary did tend to keep him from pacing. The song needed work, though. Maybe he’d send a copy of it to his sister, who was safe in the Colonies, in some Godforsaken wilderness in Texas. His nephew might appreciate it. Sis said that since he was in his teens now he had become interested in music and was quite good at playing instruments...

Moments after a particularly bright flash of lightning, Miller heard the call to action stations. He was already at his alternate station in the radio room, in charge of decrypting and encrypting communications. He glancing briefly at the latest decrypt, and the filed it.

09 DECEMBER – 18:25
FROM: SARAWAK DEFENCE FORCE - KUCHING
TO: ROYAL NAVY FORCE ZED
NUMEROUS ENEMY TRANSPORTS UNLOADING TROOPS AND SUPPLIES OFFSHORE. NO REPEAT NO ENEMY CAPITAL SHIPS SEEN. IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE NEEDED.

Miller started at the CLANG of the armored hatch being swung shut, then dogged into place by Fredericks, a rating, whose voice seemed to have reverted to puberty in the past 10 minutes as his voice cracked “They spotted the bastards in that last lightning flash!” He apparently had just entered from outside as his uniform was sopping wet. Miller had little to do at the moment except worry. The attack orders were relayed to the escorting destroyers by signal lamp. Miller undogged an interior hatch and slipped onto the signal bridge, his primary station. It was wet here, but he wanted to see what was happening.

And things were starting to happen fast. The Repulse healed slightly as she altered course, and A and B turrets ground slowly around and pointed Southeast towards Kuching. As his eyes adjusted, he could start to make out a reddish glow in that direction... fires at Kuching? There was fighting going on there... was that a ship on fire?

About that time, he saw the unexpected silhouette of another ship, a freighter, far closer that he had expected. The escort destroyer, Vampire, he thought, had a bright flash emit from the forward part of the ship, and then seconds later he heard the BANG of her 4" deck cannon... then the 4" guns from the starboard side of the Repulse followed suit, but there was no delay in the sound reaching him. A split second later, he was hammered by an enormous CRASH, and the air seemed to be compressed in this lungs. The four guns of the two forward turrets belched a huge gush of yellow-orange flame and a world-ending noise. Flashes and then fire erupted from the silhoutted freighter, and a flash-BANG as something seemed to bounce off the Repulse’s hull.

Things were hectic, and he couldn’t seem to keep track of them all... the other escort, the Tenedos had opened fire, but she was partially masked by the flagship and the Vampire and had poor angles of fire... Miller stared in fascination as a glowing white trail in the water arced AWAY from the ship... “By God, we’ve fired torpedoes!! What on earth?”

At least three enemy ship were on fire and they were frantically scattering in all directions... there didn’t seem to be any warships returning the barrage... smoke was everywhere... fumes filled the air and he smelled what seemed to be burning feathers... suddenly, a huge column of water spouted up amidships from the freighter the Repulse had been firing at, and moments later he could tell two 15" shells also hit her, and he realized the water spout had probably been a torpedo striking her vitals, and he watched in horrified fascination as the ship started to roll over and sink... minute objects, some on fire were dropping from the stricken vessel...

Suddenly a rain squall washed over the British ships and hid the enemy from sight. Minutes passed, and Miller returned to the radio shack. He paced back and forth, and listened to the excited babble of the ratings. Minutes later, a runner came in and handed him a message form, and he started to code it.

It seems the naval battle of Kuching was over.

Leftenant Geoffrey Miller was wrong.

The Repulse was abuzz with excitement after the battle, with men recounting what they had seen. But, since the action had taken place at night, that wasn’t much. The accounts people told grew more and more exaggerated as they were passed on from man to man, and by noon it seems the Repulse, Tendedos and Vampire had sunk dozens and dozens of ships, surely scotching the invasion of Borneo, and no doubt the Japanese would be suing for peace soon...
Miller had dozed fittfully in his bunk later, and tried to sort out what he had seen. He remembered definitely seeing the one ship sinking, and seeing the secondary guns lashing out on both sides at barely seen enemy ships. But, he could only remember seeing hits on a few ships, and surely the action hadn’t lasted long enough for “dozens and dozens” of ships to be sunk. The smells of battle lingered in his nose, and in his mind... burned cordite from the guns, along with the smell of burning fuel admixed with that peculiar odor that reminded him of when his mother would clean the stubble off chickens by scorching the remaining feathers with the gas jets from the stove. What on earth had THAT smell come from?

After awaking a little passed 0800, he cleaned up and shaved as best he could in the ship that was still pitching through intermittent storms, and he ate sparingly. They had to be making well over 20 knots and the ride wasn’t smooth. He didn’t have much of an appetite in this kind of weather, although he no longer had the distressing mal du mer of his earlier years. He decided to go up to the radio shack a bit early. Only Leftentant Theodore Smythe-Jones and he were cleared and qualified to decrypt signals, and Ted had relieved him at midnight.

As he made his way up to the signal bridge, Miller stopped to peer into the sky. He thought at first he had heard the drone of an airplane, but he couldn’t make out anything. The sky was solid grey, and he could see patches of rain in the distance. He saluted the Executive Officer as he made his way towards the radio room, and could hear a buzz of voices on entering it.

Ted looked excited. Miller greeted him “Hello, what’s going on?”
Smythe-Jones waved a couple of decrypt forms at him. “Just look at these! We’re going to give those bloody Nips an even bloodier nose, just you see!”

Miller took the decrypts and read them over quicky. The first one read:

“Feathers? What the deuce is that about?” Ted shrugged, and replied “I haven’t the faintest idea, old boy.” Miller read the next one.

After Miller finished the second dispatch, Ted gave a knowing nod and said “I expect you felt us alter course around nine. I expect we are after them now, but we’re maintaining radio silence for the moment.” Miller hadn’t felt the ship change course, but there was entirely too much rocking and rolling for him to have noticed. The blokes on the destroyers must be going through much worse, and he was sincerely glad he was on the Repulse instead of one of them.

Leftenant Geoffrey Miller read through the various intercepts the radio operators had copied, most from Kuching and Brunei relaying sketchy details of the landings and subsequent fighting ashore. Pretty thin gruel, mostly it seemed a patchwork of guesses. Guns ashore at places like Buntal and Kampong Telok Nipah kept shelling the enemy and their landing boats, but despite reports of “great success” they didn’t seem to be stopping the enemy as estimates of the numbers of enemy troops ashore seemed to increase drastically in each successive report. Miller had only a vague notion of where these places were as there were no charts in the Radio Room, but he figured they were on the North coast.

From the few hazy glimpses of the sun through the clouds, they seemed to be heading back to the SSE again hoping to intercept the enemy convoy. The weather was bad, though, and frequent rain squalls lashed the task force.

Shortly after noon, the weather cleared somewhat, and events began to accelerate.

Able Rating Fredericks, working as a messenger and who somehow seemed wired into the Ship Gossip System, came into the radio room, practically hopping up and down with excitement, and announced “We’ve spotted smoke to the Southeast! I’ll wager it’s the Nips again! Who’ll take my wager? Two pounds says it is!”

As the men in the radio room were already aware of the decrypts, they declined his wager, much to Fredericks disgust. Miller decided to go back to the Signal Bridge again, and just about a minute after he got there, ACTION STATIONS was sounded again. Before duty, Miller had pocketed a pair of old, battered but serviceable binoculars he had bought from a vendor in Singapore, and he used them now. He scanned the Southeast horizon, and soon located a smudge of smoke on the horizon. The Repulse and her two destroyers had increased speed and were making for the smudges. Hazy patches of rain, lit intermittently by flashes of lightning were also in that direction. “If I were in those ships, I’d be making for those squalls at top speed right now”. Startled, Miller looked up from his binoculars and saw the Executive Officer again, and the Exec saw Miller was flustered. He smiled and said “Can I borrow those for a moment?” Miller was reluctant to lose their use, but handed them over. The Exec focused for a moment, and stared for a while before announcing “You can see their topmasts now, and I do believe they are troop ships... strange, there don’t seem to be any escorts about.” He handed back the binoculars, and a rating came and summoned the Exec back to the Bridge. The two forward turrets had by this time trained in the direction of the smoke. Miller hastily refocused the binoculars on the smoke and could vaguely make out some masts, but couldn’t tell what kind of ships they were. They HAD to be over 10 miles off though. The A and B turrets suddenly erupted with a CRASH again, and a billow of smoke jutted into the sky from the cannons. They were elevated far above where they normally were used in practice. Miller focused again on the targets, and he thought that he could see the tops of columns of water... did they hit? No smoke or flame, so he thought not...

The range seemed to close rapidly. They were surely under 10 miles now, and the secondary guns started to fire. The main battery fired again, and after a pause, he saw smoke and a hint of flame erupting from a ship in the distance... the range was much closer and it WAS a troopship from what he could tell. A few seconds latter, a second ship was smoking as well. The destroyers still hadn’t opened fire, though, as they were masked by the bulk of the Repulse. They were signalling with a lamp, though, he thought “Probably telling us to get out of the way... but the convoy was getting into a squall and they couldn’t shoot anyway until we catch up some more.”

A signalman touched his arm and said “Sir, Tenedos said she received a radio communique to us and will relay it by lamp.”

“Tell them to go ahead” and the signalman focused his attention back on the destroyer and copied down the message, ripped it off his pad, and handed it to Miller. He looked at in and frowned. He could tell by the header it was to them, but it was in code. He ran back into the radio room and decrypted it quickly. He tore the decrypt from the pad, and told Fredericks “Get this to the Captain immediately!”

A few minutes later, Miller and the rest of the radio room felt the Repulse claw around through the waves and head back to the west. The troop convoy had escaped any further wrath of their task force.

Well, we got the Combat Results for the 12th Dec - here they are in compressed format (below) - we also learned that AO Spirila (damaged by air attack) sank, and AP Iwaki Maru (smacked 12/8 by the Repulse) sank.

Noemfoor was occupied by the Japanese.

It was a bad day for transports on both sides, with the Allies losing several small transports, as well as some larger ones.

Sinkawang, Hong Kong and Kavieng hold out this turn.

Hi all,

Report from CIC US Armed Forces - 12th December 1941

There were a couple of submarine contacts in my area of operations.

SS Seawolf missed AK Oregon Maru NE of Lingayen.

SS Sailfish avoided IJN DD's 300 miles WSW of Takao.

A series of convoys are being put together on the WC of America. They will carry fuel and supply to vital islands and bases in North, Central and South Pacific.

Due to the fact that almost every LCU in America is either in a restricted command or is about 30-50% of it's TOE I don't expect to be moving a lot of troops for a while. Niceguy needs the PP's more urgently than I do so he gets priority.

PH airfields will be operational within 2 days. CV Lexington and CV Enterprise will rendevous there within 3 days and await CV Saratoga and CV Yorktown from WC and Panama respectively.
