Hi all,

Report from CIC US Armed Forces - 13th December 1941

SS Pike reported a torpedo failure whilst firing 2 torpedoes at AP Kiyosumi Maru 120 miles ESE of Saigon.

SS Porpoise left AK Yagi Maru burning nd heavily damaged after firing 13 shells into her 120 miles NE of Camranh Bay.

Needless to say both of these submarines are now relocating.

SS KXIII received a DC hit 240 miles east of Kuantan. 34/78/0. Returning to Singapore for emergency repairs.

A 2nd convoy will leave WC tomorrow with tonnes of supply and fuel bound for the South Pacific.

CV Saratoga and CV Yorktown routed towards PH aswell since the airfield is now operational.

12 x airgroup massed at Los Angeles for future deployment to the South Pacfic. Need to allocate the correct paperwork and staff (change their command) when adequate PP's become available.

Hi all,

Report from CIC US Armed Forces - 14th December 1941
----------------------------------------

SS KXIII was attacked by DD Murakumo whilst tryig to reach Singapore. The additional DC's caused further flooding and it's doubtful she'll make port now (40/95/0)

SS Argoinaut reported torpedo failure when she hit the large AP Kamakura Maru 120 miles NE of Kwajalein. The escoprts tried in vain to locate Argonaut throughout the day and also after she laid her mines outside Kwajalein harbour.

SS Shark had a frustrating day when she surfaced to attack AK Meikai Maru 60 miles SE of Camranh Bay. All salvoes of torpedoes either missed or were duds. She pumped .50's and 3" shells into the freighter though.

SS Pike missed AK Nako Maru 60 miles SW of Camranh Bay.

CV Enterpise is at PH now. CV Lexington will reach there tomorrow.

Every day the airfields are repaired more and more planes become operational.

A 10,000 tonne supply convoy will leave Seattle tomorrow bound for Dutch Harbour.

A mixture of AVD, PC, MSW craft are assembling there to counter any Japanese invasion of the Aleutians.

A 3rd supply and fuel convoy will leave the US tomorrow bound for Suva.

US Radio Intercepts potentially hint at enemy strength in the Marshalls. Maybe an invasion of Canton Island. This is my hunch anyway.

Report from CIC US Armed Forces - 16th December 1941

A day of frustration in the submarine war as SS O16 reports missing CVL Zuiho with 2 torpedoes 180 miles NW of Kuching. Grrr.

SS Perch evaded ASW vessels by the PI.

SS Porpoise missed the large AK Sasako Maru with torpedoes 180 miles NE of Camranh Bay.

SS S-36 was lightly damaged by ASW vessels 120 miles SW of Swatow - 20/0/0.

Ships continue to move to WC, from the WC (4 x convoy) and to PH.

I have despatched initial elements of a PBY squadron to Johnston Island, Palmyra, Christmas Island and Canton Island. Only 1-3 planes have arrived so far for each place since the rest are repairing or receiving maintenance before flying on from PH. It will give me an element of search in these areas.

Seems about time to add an update from Southwest Pac. Now 10 days into the war the allies are still realing from the very aggressive first turn moves. So notes on the first 10 days.

1. Bettys and Nells have made their precense felt, there are few places in the DEI where ships are safe. As such I am pulling almost all shipping out. Air Transports will be responsible for redeploying Dutch troops.

2. Luzon is in trouble. Seems forts are going up very slowly. Shelling and bombing at Clark field has been heavy...as such my troops have given up digging foxholes and trenches and are simply manning the bomb craters. [8|] My plan is to make a final stand at Manilla, but fort levels are still only at 1.5 [X(] This may mean a retreat to Bataan is a better choice

3. Mendanao is unthreatened. Supply ships have arrived boosting supplies to an acceptable level, probably more than I can ever use. I intend to use the AF at Cagayan as a field for attacking IJN shipping. I will move AC in and out

4. The Dutch have sent about 1/3 of their air force to Kendari to attack ships around Ambonia. Unfortunately they havent hit a thing, but its good pilot training. The AF at Makassar is being prepped as a second AF to oppose any landing at Kendari. It also helps protect the Makassar straight.

4.5 In CHS the only real weapon I have right now is the Dutch Air Force (and Speedys subs). However planes and especially pilots are scarce, as are supplies. Batavia will soon reach 20,000 supply so I can draw AC replacements from there. My concentration right now is to use the pause (between Japan's initial invasion and the ones that will start shortly) to train up my pilots, in particular bombers.

5. I have 2 squadrons of dive bombers headed for DEI. I will try to use them only against major landing forces and carriers. If a nice target presents itself the 35 DBs could be a rude surprise for Japan.

Well, things look a bit different once i have studied the turn: it appears things are going better than i had hoped in Central China.

i might state that i've been another one of the Allied Players Who Hate China, and i (more or less deliberately) took this theater to try to learn how to play it.

i have been moving my units trying to isolate what some people have called the "Central Cauldron" - the cities of Ichang, Hankow, Sinyang, Kiukiang, Anking and Nanchang (for the Animals side). It appears that this has happened this turn. There is a very tenuous supply route available to Ichang, running about 13 hexes to Canton, but it crosses at least 4 wooded hexes and a road that is about to be traversed by a Chinese unit, which will close the path.

This means that the only source of supply will come from Hankow, and hopefully Ichang will be cut off from that in the next day or so.

The Animals have plenty of units in the Cauldron, but they already seem to be suffering from lack of supply. Two IJA first-line divisions attacked three Chinese Corps last turn. The IJA should have had an AV of around 920, but it was adjusted to 75!! Their attack was repulsed bloodily (for them), so they will be weaker this turn. They probably will be protected by some forts, but 3 Chinese Corps will be attacking this turn and hopefully will (a) bloody them some more, and (b) will push them out of the hex. This is in the hex NW of Kiukiang. This will give the Chinese better defensive positions, tightening the stranglehold.

Several Chinese Corp should enter the hexes West and SE of Ichang in the next several days, cutting off that city. A large force is posed around the city once the city is isolated. Allied air units are moving up to help assure the isolation.

A similar isolating process is going on in the North near Yangku, where i am hoping to trap one or two more units.

The downside is two Guerilla units are cut off near Tsinan (they've been moving from almost the beginning, but were easily surrounded by units on the roads), and the Animal forces in Canton and Hong Kong are now available to redeploy to the North. i am rushing units towards Wuchow, but "rushing" isn't exactly the word i'd use to describe the movement of the Chinese Army. We'll see how things play out in the next several turns.

EDIT: Checking on some things, i find one his the divisions at Canton/HK (almost 1/2 of the AV) is in the Southern Area Army command, as is one of the heavy artillery units. **IF** the unit is withdrawn (per house rules) then any move north from Canton should be containable... but of course, the Animals could also use a big chunk of PP to switch the unit(s) to China Expeditionary Army...

SS Truant claimed her first victim of the war in sinking AK Tonegawa Maru with a torpedo 60 miles SW of Saigon. She will relocate 120 miles further west on a possible intercept course for the damaged DD Shirakumo.

DD Shirakumo was damaged by a torpedo from SS KXI 60 miles east of Kota Bharu. In return KXI is hit by a DC causing massive flooding damage - 36/87/0.

SS S-39 missed AK Hokuroku Maru with 4 torpedoes 60 miles SE of Shanghai. She will relocate 60 miles further NE in a hope to further attack this convoy.

CV Saratoga should join her comrades at PH within 2 days. That just leaves Yorktown to arrive. I want to wait for the arrival of the F4F fighter and have my CV's carrying these puppies before venturing further.

A supply/fuel convoy is forming at San Francisco to head to Midway. A slight risk since this could be invaded but it is down to c.1000 supplies and I wanto bolster this base against any potential attack.

Attu Island has been invaded which was a minor surprise. I had an AVD en route there as a picket. She will arrive tomororw and attempt to interfere with the Japanese landings. Further PC/PG/MSW craft are also en route.

A Base Force was to be embarked at Seattle for Cold Bay. Instead she will head further down the Aleutian chain towards either Adak or Amchitka.

Well, while we wait for the action to resume, i'll continue with the story of Leftenant Miller and friends:

11 December 1941 (Local time 13:20)
Leftenant Geoffrey Miller rubbed his burning eyes and started on another decrypt in the radio room of the Repulse. There had been a steady stream of traffic blazing across the ether, most of it pretty pathetic: calls for help, calls for reinforcements, replies that little or no help or reinforcements could be given. The damned Japanese were seizing territory, and while they paid some heavy prices for it, they still kept doing it and so far they showed no inclination of stopping.

His small part of the war was so far going well. Repulse and her small consorts had punished the enemy at Kuching, and had made good their escape. No enemy aircraft had been seen, and aside for some damaged paint from a merchantman’s deck gun, the task force hadn’t been hurt at all. The weather was still rainy and stormy, and no doubt that had helped them avoid the enemy. They would be back at Batavia within an hour - land had been spotted and they were about to slow to await a pilot to take them through the minefield.

He still was puzzled about the feathers in the harbor at Kuching, and kept hoping the Intelligence Section would shed some light on it, but the only messages from them so far had been general murky assessments of the enemy strength in various areas. Miller was about to pick up another message form when he heard a dull “WHOOM”.

Able Rate Fredericks looked up, startled, while his immediate superior Petty Officer Matthews apparently did not hear it as he had his headset on and was taking down a message from the wireless. Miller strode quickly to the signal bridge outside, and looked around.

Suddenly, his stomach clenched as he saw a tower of smoke to starboard, followed by flames from one of their escorts, the Tenedos. The Action Stations alarm sounded, and he felt the Repulse turn hard to port, and saw the other escort, the destroyer Vampire charge forward, bow wave curling. He saw her signal light blinking and copied the morse in his head “DROPPING DEPTH BOMBS ON ASDIC CONTACT”. He called out Fredericks to run the message to the bridge, and continued watching the action, fascinated by the life and death struggle unfolding. He brought up his binoculars as he saw yellow-white circular discolourations of the water near Vampire which were quickly replaced by towering white-grey water spouts, the sound of the explosions from the depth bombs reaching him about five or six seconds later. Tenedos signalled by lamp “SEVERE FLOODING FORWARD COMPARTMENTS BUT ABLE TO STEAM. REQUEST ASSISTANCE WITH PUMPING.” But like all the other pleading signals Miller had seen that day, there was little help at hand. Vampire continued to roil the water with her attacks, and Tenedos followed slowly in the wake of the Repulse, listing noticeably and pouring smoke from her bow, with an occasional lick of yellow flame seen.

Fortunately for Repulse, a guide boat had already come out to lead her in, and in view of the submarine menace, they wouldn’t stop immediately for a pilot but would follow the boat in. Two minesweepers were creeping out and would help Tenedos. Miller thought that if it wasn’t for them being just outside Batavia, Tenedos would surely sink. But then again, the submarine probably had been waiting in that spot because it WAS just outside of Batavia.

An hour and a half later, Repulse had docked with the assistance of a tug. Tenedos had been routed directly into a dry dock to prevent her from flooding entirely and sinking, but the crews in the shipyard were still fighting a stubborn fire. Miller could see Vampire finally coming in, her signal lamp blinking “OIL SLICK SPOTTED. SUBMARINE BELIEVED DAMAGED BUT NOT SUNK.” Miller snorted. He doubted the Vampire had damaged the attacking submarine much. His older brother Freddy on the Truant said that submariners liked to fool escorts by dumping out oil, garbage and other debris to fool an attacker, but usually only a surprise attack or a really prolonged attack would do much damage to a submarine. Still, he could hope they had gotten lucky He especially hoped that the luck of the Repulse would continue to hold.

11 December 1941 19:00 Local Time

The skies continued to rip open and dump buckets of rain on Batavia throughout the day. Thunder grumbled fitfully, and Leftenant Miller (and the Allied Navies in general) were glad for it as ships streaming in to Batavia from the Indian Ocean and a group of ships from Singapore would be hidden by the clouds and squalls.

Miller wasn’t pleased that the gloom also made navigating through the narrow and confusing streets much more difficult for him, though. Despite his rain gear, he was getting soaked and frustrated, trying to keep his dispatch case dry in the blacked-out colonial city while stumbling through pond-sized mud puddles. The directions to the Combined Allied Intel Office office seemed clear enough, but in the feeble glow from his failing electric torch, he couldn’t really make out any landmarks. He swore as he stepped into another puddle that had a thick goo of dubious origin at the bottom that his foot sank deeply into. When he tried to pull his foot out, his shoe came off.

Swearing more colourfully now, he tried to retrieve his shoe with his foot, and quickly discovered that wasn’t going to work. He sighed, got down on his knees, soiling his already soaked uniform, and pulled the shoe from the mire that gave a disgusting sucking sound.

Miller was in this compromising position when the Air Raid Warden found him. Miller looked up, startled, when a flashlight shone on him, blinding him a bit. The Air Raid Warden said, (in a MOST peculiar accent) - “What are you doing, Englisher?” At least he thought that’s what he had said - it sounded more like “Vat er you dew-ink, Anglisher?”

Miller stood up quickly, mud (?) encased shoe in one hand, dispatch case tucked under his arm, and flashlight in the other hand, and felt not unlike a fool. He looked at the Warden sceptically - he was a short man with thin limbs, large feet shod in mud-splattered white canvas shoes of a peculiar design. An Air Raid Warden’s brassard was tied around his left arm, and a large electric torch was in his right hand. A large pistol was strapped to his hip, and he wore a strange helmet that Miller took for an old French Army helmet that had a scrub brush glued to its crest. His skin was dark, and Miller’s eyes had been temporarily blinded by the Dutchman’s (if that what he was) torch, so he couldn’t really make out his face. The guy seemed to be grinning at him though.

“Uh, I was trying to find the Combined Allied Intel Office!” Miller stammered.

“In dat puddle? I don’t tink it is dere.”

“Oh, no, I lost my shoe in the puddle, and I just fished it out just now.” Miller decided that perhaps this bloke was half Dutch and half-East Indian (or more), which might account for the peculiar accent. The accent wasn’t really Dutch, but that came closest to his relatively limited knowledge of such things... maybe it was Dutch and Indian, or Dutch or Indonesian, or...

“Ach, vell follow me... it is not far”. Miller’s musing were interrupted, and the Warden turned away in the deepening gloom and padded away with a peculiar fast gait, Miller hastily following, one foot bare and still holding the shoe.

About a block away, the Warden suddenly turned and Miller recognized the awning on a buiding that he had been told “he couldn’t miss” (but apparently had missed at least twice). The Warden ran up the steps and shoved opened a door without knocking. Miller followed and stepped into a room cluttered with old desks and chairs. He heard an American accented voice say (something like) “Oh, it’s you, Scavanger...” and heard someone typing furiously. He looked over, and saw a beefy man in an American uniform at a typewriter. The Warden made a sweeping motion with his arm towards the American, then turned suddenly and walked back out into the rain without another word.

The American seemed to become aware of Miller with a start, and jumped up and saluted. He seemed twitchy. Miller transferred his mucky shoe and his left hand and returned the salute and looked around. Only a single naked light-bulb over the American’s typewriter was lit, the dishelved room was mostly shrouded in shadows. The windows were painted black, and the room smelled of burned coffee and urine... dog urine. There was a sudden BUMP and then the reason for one of the smells suddenly emerged from under the desk: a large short coated floppy-eared dog had apparently stood up under the desk suddenly and knocked its head against it. It emerged with a sheepish demeanor, and then wagged its tail.

The reason for the first odor also was obvious. There was a scorched coffee pot on a hot plate, and at least four partially consumed cups of coffee were on the desk around the typewriter.

Miller looked at the American, but didn’t see any insignia on his uniform, but since he had been saluted figured he must outrank the fellow. He said: “Leftenant Miller, Royal Navy. I was told to bring these dispatches here.”

American: “I’m Sergeant Loggman, United States Army. No one else is here right now, so I supposed you’d better give them to me. I can lock them in the safe until morning. Would you like some coffee? I just brewed a fresh pot.”
