I personally really like Big B's mod, even though I am suffering some of it's consequences...

Namely, CHINA is a quagmire. It's a completely different game for JFB's like myself, though probably more realistic.

I have just reached 5/42 and Hong Kong still holds; the increased power there is very frustrating. But that's life!
Thank you,

Your problem in Hong Kong is partially my fault - I probably shouldn't have had mobile Chinese units near Canton (within a couple of hexes) at start...I believe that is the root cause of your Hong Kong problem.

One of the details I looking at for 1.4.

we have some good news and some bad news to report!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 73,114

Japanese Ships
SS I-2

Allied Ships
AK Admiral Y. Williams

torpedoes miss, my subs really suck so far

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 55 troops unloading over beach at Merak, 18,59

Japanese ground losses:
183 casualties reported

unoccupied base next to Battavia will be taken next turn, then the troops will march to Battavia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 93 troops unloading over beach at Tomini, 34,65

Japanese ground losses:
31 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 55 troops unloading over beach at Merak, 18,59

Japanese ground losses:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Balikpapan , at 31,64

Japanese aircraft

H8K Emily: 1 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
59 casualties reported

Airbase hits 1
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 16

Aircraft Attacking:
7 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 12000 feet

this strike came in at the morning phase! Once again I hate the weather. Soerabaja had perfect weather and the B17 launched, while Balikpapan was clouded so my Zeroes that were ordered on sweep stayed grounded to get bombed... ridicoulos when the weather is so bad my planes can´t take off but then 40 bombers come in at the same weather to bomb my grounded planes...[:o]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 8
Ki-21 Sally x 71
Ki-48 Lily x 36
Ki-49 Helen x 26
Ki-15 Babs x 12

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 3 damaged
Ki-48 Lily: 2 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 1 damaged

Allied ground losses:
97 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Airbase hits 8
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 39

Aircraft Attacking:
16 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 15000 feet

went up from 12000 ft to 15000 ft and the bomb hits decreased by "feeled" 50%[8|]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 83rd Regional Army Corps, at 49,40

Japanese aircraft
Ki-27 Nate x 326

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
8 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
12 x Ki-27 Nate bombing at 2000 feet

isn´t that funny when you see 326 fighters attack a ground unit scoring 8 casualties? At least that way I can keep up my training as these units will live forever me thinks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Batavia Coastal Gun Battalion, at 19,59

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 51

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
14 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 10000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Soerabaja , at 22,65

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 10

Allied aircraft
Hawk 75A x 11
CW-21B Demon x 11
Brewster 339D x 17

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
Hawk 75A: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged
CW-21B Demon: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
Brewster 339D: 2 destroyed

this attack was effected by the morning bombing of Balikpapan, 17 Zeroes out of 27 were damaged / destroyed so only 10 attacked Soerabaja. 4:1 outnumbered they were still able to do some damage while taking no losses... btw 3 pilots were killed by the B17 bombs... 4E bombers are the number one killers of Japanese pilots, in the air and in their barracks...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the good news:

Ground combat at Noumea

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 45929 troops, 340 guns, 22 vehicles, Assault Value = 754

Defending force 8641 troops, 86 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 211

Japanese max assault: 582 - adjusted assault: 637

Allied max defense: 195 - adjusted defense: 205

Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Noumea base !!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Do 24K-2: 2 destroyed
PBY Catalina: 3 destroyed
A-20B Boston: 1 destroyed
Hudson I: 3 destroyed
B-26B Marauder: 1 destroyed
SBD Dauntless: 2 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
269 casualties reported
Guns lost 6

Allied ground losses:
10076 casualties reported
Guns lost 77

the base was taken on the first attempt and two NZ brigades and a USN base force surrender! [&o] The bad news are that I have sent KB to Koumac to take up the 20000 fuel, but as Noumea was captured the "greatest of all supply systems on earth" decided it´s now time to transfer 17000 fuel to Noumea. When I gave orders this turn I had 3000 fuel for KB which has now a range of 16... [8|]. I can´t send KB there as there are still mines and I don´t want to risk a hit. MSW are three days out and will need two or three days to clear the mines, so KB and the surface TF is currently not operational... [X(]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 92486 troops, 1203 guns, 41 vehicles, Assault Value = 2035

Also, I noticed you sank a TON of Allied Cruisers. My opponent tells me that in Big B, all Australian and US CA's AND CL's respawn, not just the CA's; so Perth, Helena, and Boise are scheduled to come back in year and a half.

Can you confirm, Big-B? And if so, does that also apply to the Omahas and Adelaide?

(If so, the Allied player should be sending Adelaide on a suicide mission turn one)

I did nothing about respawning Cruisers (not that I could even if I wanted to - it's all hard coded), so any Allied cruiser (or CV) subject to respawn in stock will respawn in mine - just as a stock game.

From what I understand - the only way (so far) to have a non-respwan game is to add all the ships in the data base that were actually built and use tham as they arrive. The computer created re-spawns are simply not used (by gentlemens'agreement). Therefore, there is no such thing as a true Non-Respawn Game... as far as I know anyway.

Even if those US and Australian CAs and CLs respawn as better ships it´s still worth to sink them! I´m not talking about the points but the fact that he now has to run his carriers around with 8 cruisers less as escorts until late 43. If you sink A LOT of them then it will ruin the Allied operations in 43. Not that they are really short of cruisers but losing a dozen or more is not something they don´t feel!

AP Ryoyo Maru
PC Ch 32, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AP Mexico Maru

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet

I move in 63 more fighters to Balikpapan to intercept any B17 coming in for the airfield. Helpless again evaded my move and set his 4Es on long feared anti shipping strikes. The bombers that are coming out a level 4!!! airfield (too small for B17) are hitting two small PCs from 10000 feet damaging both. Both are in a critical state and are ordered to move to Palembang to be disbanded in a port 3. Perhaps one can be saved. Bringing my troops to Java will be more than dangerous with 40 B17 on naval strikes! [8|]

Another story that happened early on and I haven´t told so far: I tried to knock out Soerabaja early on and after reconing it for a week I sent in a surface TF consisting of a couple CLs and 5 or 6 DDs to tangle with PTs at night followed by a heavy bombardment TF consisting of 2 BBs, a couple of CAs and CLs and 6 DDs as escorts. The surface TF went in DD xy locates mine, boom boom boom, three DDs hit mines (am I playing UV??). No PTs located. A second later my bombardment TF went in DD xy locates mine, CA hits mine, boom boom (am I playing UV??)[8|]. CRAP! Short time silence, then the bombardment: boom... counter boom...

What??? Counterfire??? Wth??? Next second a CL sinks!!! Escorts were on no bombardment! The result of the bombardment was more than poor btw.

The morning came, the planes started! All three damaged DDs were located and sunk (they would have sunk due to the mines anyway as they made it only one hex out of Soerabaja). The damaged CA was also attacked and some 500 lb bombs were put into it (YES they penetrate CA armor - as they should!).

When I looked at my ships I saw the following result: CL sunk, a CA heavily damaged, two BBs stripped off their secondary armament and a CA with 3 main gun turrets missing.... [X(][8|] Must be a real good 150 mm battery at Soerabaja, not to mention that they exactly knew where to lay mines... So I´m a bit nervous about sending in my battlewaggons again...

No thunderstorms, the weather was both times overcast IIRC. If you compare it with the attacks I´ve made so far (all at 12000) then it really seems the 15000 didn´t do me any good. Though I have to say this could just be another bad die roll and I would have to made more than one attack that I can really tell if it makes a real difference. It also could be even be the weather and I´m not remembering correctly and it was one time (15000 ft) heavily clouded and the other time (12000 ft) overcast! [:)]

But I will keep an eye on it!

I have brought in two heavy AA battailons just before Helpless transferred his heavies to Java. Now only Hudsons are low bombing taking nearly no damage and now I wonder if those AA guns can fire at bombers in 5000 feet.

Brian,

perhaps something you might consider. What´s with the flak gap? In that case Helpless isn´t exploiting it because he doesn´t know that there is heavy flak now and he started bombing over 15000 feet in the beginning. There were enough discussions that brought up that the stock flak is wrong when heavy AA guns have a minimum height they can shoot at from 5-7000 IIRC. Of course they had a minimum height in real life though I don´t think it was that "high".

S-23

(SS-128: dp. 854 (surf.), 1,062 (subm.); l. 219'3"; b. 20'8"; dr. 15'11" (mean); s. 14.5 k. (surf.), 11 k. (subm.); cpl. 42; a. 1 4", 4 21" tt; cl. S-l)

S-23 (SS-128) was laid down on 18 January 1919 by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Quincy, Mass.; launched on 27 October 1920; sponsored by Miss Barbara Sears; and commissioned on 30 October 1923, Lt. Joseph Y. Dreisonstok in command.

Initially assigned to Submarine Division 11, Control Force, S-23 was based at New London, Conn., through the 1920's. During that time, she operated off the New England coast from late spring until early winter; then moved south for winter and spring exercises. From 1925 on, her annual deployments included participation in fleet problems; and those maneuvers occasionally took her from the Caribbean into the Pacific. With the new decade, however, the submarine was transferred to the Pacific; and, on 5 January 1931, she departed New London for the Panama Canal, California, and Hawaii. En route, she participated in Fleet Problem XII and, on 25 April, she arrived at her new homeport, Pearl Harbor, whence she operated, with Division 7, for the next ten years. In June 1941, Division 7 became Division 41; and, on 1 September, S-23 departed the Hawaiian Islands for California. An overhaul and operations off the west coast took her into December when the United States entered World War II.

The crew of the World War I-design submarine then prepared for service in the Aleutians. Radiant-type heaters were purchased in San Diego to augment the heat provided by the galley range. Heavier and more waterproof clothing, including ski masks, were added to the regular issue provided to submarine crews. The boat itself was fitted out for wartime service and, in January 1942, S-23 moved north to Dutch Harbor, Unalaska.

On the afternoon of 7 February, she departed Dutch Harbor on her first war patrol. Within hours, she encountered the heavy seas and poor visibility which characterized the Aleutians. Waves broke over the bridge, battering those on duty there; and sent water cascading down the conning tower hatch. On the 10th, S-23 stopped to jettison torn sections of the superstructure, a procedure she was to repeat on her subsequent patrols; and, on the 13th, the heavy seas caused broken bones to some men on the bridge. For another three days, the submarine patrolled the great circle route from Japan, then headed home, arriving at Dutch Harbor on the 17th. From there, she was ordered back to San Diego for overhaul and brief sound school duty.

On her arrival, requests were made for improved electrical, heating, and communications gear and installation of a fathometer, radar, and keel-mounted sonar. The latter requests were to be repeated after each of her next three patrols, but became available only after her fourth patrol.

On 20 May, S-23 again sailed for the Aleutians. Proceeding via Port Angeles, she arrived in Alaskan waters on the 29th and was directed to patrol to the west of Unalaska to hinder an anticipated Japanese attack. On 2 June, however, 20-foot waves broke over the bridge and seriously injured two men. The boat headed for Dutch Harbor to transfer the men for medical treatment. Arriving the same day, she was still in the harbor the following morning when Japanese carrier planes attacked the base.

After the first raid, S-23 cleared the harbor and within hours arrived in her assigned patrol area, where she remained until the 11th. She was then ordered back to Dutch Harbor; replenished; and sent to patrol southeast of Attu, which the Japanese had occupied, along with Kiska, a few days earlier.

For the next 19 days, she hunted for Japanese logistic and warships en route to Attu and reconnoitered that island's bays and harbors. Several attempts were made to close targets, but fog, slow speed, and poor maneuverability precluded attacks in all but one case. On the 17th, she fired on a tanker, but did not score. On 2 July, she headed back to Unalaska and arrived at Dutch Harbor early on the morning of the 4th.

During her third war patrol, 15 July to 18 August, S-23 again patrolled primarily in the Attu area. On 6 August, however, she was diverted closer to Kiska to support the bombardment of the island; and, on 9 August, she returned to her patrol area, where her previous experiences in closing enemy targets were repeated.

Eight days after her return to Dutch Harbor, S-23 again headed west; and, on 28 August, she arrived in her assigned area to serve as a protective scout during the occupation of Adak. During most of her time on station, the weather was overcast, but it proved to be the most favorable she had experienced in eight months of Alaskan operations. On 16 September, she was recalled from patrol to meet her 20 September scheduled date of departure for San Diego for upkeep and sound school duty.

On 7 December, S-23 returned to Unalaska; and, on the 17th, she got underway on her fifth war patrol. By the 22d, she was off western Attu; and, on the 23d, she received orders to take up station off Paramushiro. On the 24th, she headed for the Kurils. Two days later, 200 miles from her destination, her stern plane operating gear outside the hull broke. Since submerging and depth control became difficult, she turned back for Dutch Harbor. Moving east, her mechanical difficulties increased; her stern planes damaged her propellors; her fouled rudder resulted in a damaged gear train. Nature added severe snow and ice storms after 3 January 1943. But, on the 6th, S-23 made it into Dutch Harbor.

Using equipment and parts from S-35, S-23 was repaired at Dutch Harbor and at Kodiak; and, on 28 January, she departed her Unalaska base for another patrol in the Attu area. She spent 21 days on station, two of which, 6 and 7 February, were spent repairing the port main motor control panel. She scored on no enemy ships and returned to Dutch Harbor on 26 February.

Refit, the submarine got underway for her last war patrol on 8 March. Moving west, she arrived off the Kamchatka Peninsula on the 14th and encountered floes with ice 2½ to 3 feet thick. Her progress down the coast in search of the Japanese fishing fleet slowed; and, initially limited to moving during daylight hours, she rounded Cape Kronotski on the afternoon of the 16th and Cape Lopatka on the morning of the 19th. She then set a course back to the Aleutians which would take her across Japanese Kuril-Aleutians supply lanes. On the 26th, she took up patrol duty in the Attu area; and, on the 31st, she turned her bow toward Dutch Harbor.

In April 1943, S-23 returned to San Diego. During the summer, she underwent an extensive overhaul; and, in the fall, she began providing training services to the sound school which she continued through the end of hostilities. On 11 September 1945, she sailed for San Francisco where she was decommissioned on 2 November. Fourteen days later, her name was struck from the Navy list. Her hulk was subsequently sold for scrapping and was delivered to the purchaser, Salco Iron and Metal Co., San Francisco, on 15 November 1946.

S-23 was awarded one battle star for her World War II service.

Story of the S23! Looks like she was more succesful in real life than in our game... With succesful I mean at least she made it through the war! With all the industrial capacity the US had I wonder that WW I class subs were used throughout WW II!

Can someone tell me what flag is there on S23? [&:]

Hey Chris!

I am glad that you got rolling along with another campaign.  Life here remains 'up in the air' and will remain so for a while.

Have just caught up with the AAR.  I was unaware of the Japanese Dud rate going up.  I didn't notice it in our campaign.  Rather odd...

Considering our game, what is YOUR organizational structure for the Japanese CVs?

Additionally, since your PH raid wasn't very satisfying, how do you weigh that against the Manila attack option?

Hi John!

Good to hear you!

Next game I definetely will attack Manila or Singapore with 60:40 odds for Manila I think. Helpless´ subs are hurting me (even if they are "only" hitting transports). Most surprisingly were the dangerous US fleet subs with "not working" torps that are working just fine it seems.

I´m having my carriers like I always adviced to have YOURS also: Grouped together! And they will stay together no matter what will happen! Though I have to say that we´ve got a max carrier based house rule of 450 planes so this would be like the original KB + the 48 plane CVL), so when additional carriers will come from the shipyards I can´t stack them to a super KB. This will enable me to repair and upgrade carriers if I don´t lose any. Mostly one carrier TF of mine will be around with 450 planes while the other carriers stay in port. There´s the possibility to have KB split in two CV TFs following each other but this means always the risk of getting split up so I will go with ONE TF with the highest AAA value (which is also impressing if you look at such an IJN TF with 25 ships from mid 43 on). IJN CLs get upgrades that boost its AA value to over 400, the carriers have nearly 1000, some BBs are also over 500 and the CAs mostly over 300. Add the 250 AA value DDs and voila.... 10.000+ AA value of the TF.

I have had my carriers only once split in different hexes, in my game against Wolfpack, when I tried to kill off his US CVs in mid 42. I killed 2 US CVs immediately but he came with another two and hit three carriers with one or two 1000 lb bombs. Return damage was severe but they made it to the Aussie coast while the floatation damage on my carriers increased and increased .... glug glug glug... all three carriers on the long way back to Rabaul or Truk. LESSON LEARNT!!! Our CV battle was the best example! I even have warned you indirectly before! [:D] 2 CVs and a CVL are no match for the 4 US fleet carriers, no matter what date IMO. You lost all your carriers and I came away without damage, only a couple a dozen planes lost.

So: NEVER SPLIT YOUR IJN CARRIERS!!![:-]

One of the dangerous Dutch subs hit once again. This sub was attacked several times in the past but never was in real danger. My best ASW TF is coming in this turn and hopefully will do it´s best to locate the sub. There are actually two enemy subs in the Batavia hex which attack our minesweeping ships. The port is still full of mines and another 3 MSW will come in next turn to help.

O 23, 31 Jan 1947

The Dutch sub survived the war in real life! For my taste, I´ve seen better looking WWII subs.

This is an oversight on my part, I didn't reduce the number of B-24Ds being built - everyone obsesses on B-17s, the B-24s went unnoticed. I'll fix that in 1.4.

I know you didn´t touch AA guns, that´s why I said it´s more dangerous for Allied bombers to bomb at 15.000 ft than bombing at 5.000 ft. The reason is that the 75 mm and 105 mm AA guns only shoot at targets over IIRC 5-7000 ft. [8|] So the Allied standard bombing altitude of 6000 ft is the perfect one. No morale hit, the small AA guns not really effective (there are just a couple of 13mm and 25 mm guns) and the real flak guns don´t shoot at all.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/15/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I´ve shifted some of my bombers to ground attack to wear some of his LCUs down. Out of 36 Lillies 20 launch. Out of 54 Helens 29 launch. For unknown reasons nearly half of the bombers stay home.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Castor, you are the bad die roll king! [:D]

The problem with dies is that it´s always a thing were luck is involved and that´s what I hate about it! When there are "anomalies", or should I call it bugs, are involved too then it´s not just annoying... See my next combat report...[8|]

ISN´T THAT FUNNY????????????? This was my bombardment TF which entered Soerabaja last night, DIDN´T DO ANYTHING (not even engaging the TF there) then moves three hexes out of Soerabaja!!!!!! I have reported this kind of BUG, FLAW or whatever this SHIT is called in English a couple of times already: Bombardment TFs that enter the target hex and go out again without doing anything. I remember Mogami who always said that if a TF enters a hex and there´s an enemy TF in the hex then there is 100% a surface combat... LOL [8|] So where was the combat?

The facts are: The TF was 4 hexes away of Soerabaja last turn, the escorts had more than enough fuel. It must have entered Soerabaja - then some kind of bug happens, as nothing happens - it perhaps accumulates A LOT op points and instead of moving the 4 hexes it should it moves only 3 hexes. I knew there are those Dutch torp bombers with a torp range of 3, but I didn´t consider them a real threat because my TF moves at least 4 hexes (surprisingly those TFs often move a hex more than they should at full speed).

The die rolls make this turn perfect, as those low experienced, slow Dutch torp bombers hit with two torps.

Knowing about these occasions where bombardment TFs are doing nothing I checked the TF last turn if everything looks fine. It looked fine! Now the chances to lose a BB are pretty good. The Tf will move to Batavia (port 6, a fleet HQ will be flown in from Sing).

Helpless told me he ordered a bombardment in the Solomons which didn´t do anything at all, so he knows what I´m speaking of...[8|]

I bet when the BB enters Batavia port it will be sunk by one of the two Dutch subs that are parked under my ASW TFs and are spotted every turn by my search planes, but nevertheless are keep sinking my ships there.

leaking Cap from Moulmein, 4Es taking down Zeroes is the best way to kill them as there´s nothing they can do against the bombers. Cool when the responsible designers say that there isn´t a leaking cap when you set the range to 0. This combat obviously proofed it isn´t so.

again the leaking Cap from Moulmein, this time range 1 hex. Proves again that Japanese fighters with a gun value of 12 are just not able to take down bombers. This means, more than ever, that I really have to withdraw everything within a range of 14 (max range B24) from mid 42 on as then the B24 in numbers will arrive. For Helpless it will be better to send in unescorted 4Es than with escorts because with escorts he will lose a good number of fighters. Without escorts he will trade bombers to Zeroes in A2A at a 1:1 kill rate and with a 100 bomber strike he will make an airfield inoperational within one or two strikes.

HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO, HERE WE GOOOO....

In the morning phase I ordered 81 Sallies with escorts to bomb Soerabaja airfield. They launched (surprisingly) but DIDN´T find the airfield (not surprisingly). [8|] There were no airstrikes out of Soerabaja in the morning. In the afternoon the airstrikes came and (again not surprisingly) the low exp. Dutch pilots in slow flying biplanes with floats achieve another hit! Perhaps it would have been better to LRCAP my BB but I decided to take out the airfield. This is no doubt my mistake. But it is not just annoying that the initial damage to Nagato was caused by this "flaw". I just call it a flaw, as whenever we talk about a bug on this forum then you are called hysteric, a whiner...

All in all the 23 Dutch torp bombers put three torps in Nagato which causes a floatation dam of 94 today, 3 hexes off Batavia!

It´s great to have bugs that really effect you in a game you are supposed to play for years. While this game has lead to the most playing hours of a game for me, it also has lead to the most frustration because of bugs.
