It was remarkable for me that the Betties are spotting and attacking far more subs than the Sallies do. I expected the complete opposite because

a) the Sallies are exp. 85, the Betties are 70-75
and
b) 27 Sallies are searching or ASW at range 8 (6000 ft - I never go lower), but only 8 Betties are searching at a range of 15 (6000 ft)

another 80 exp Sally daitai will come in when the airfield is increased by another point which should happen the next three turns I hope.

Don't forget that the range of your planes is cut in half when conducting ASW Ops. Thus, your Sally's are really only at a range of 4.

Yes I know, that´s why I had them on search at the beginning! But with 27 Sallies on ASW I thougth at least those subs in a range of 4 should be in real trouble. That wasn´t the case. Not that I´m complaining about the Sallies working too bad but what a whopping result of the Betties every turn. 8 Betties searching a range of 15 in comparison of 27 Sallies at a actual range of 4 the last two turns. And still 8 of the 14 subs are within a range of 4.

Though the only hit so far was achieved by the Sallies (if it was a hit and not FOW).

Many players seem to keep their Naval Search at 6000 and don't do ASW searches without noticable differences in finding subs and hitting them. You might trying setting all those Betty/Sally on Naval Search and see if this is true or not.

That´s exactly what I´ve done the turns before and yes, there wasn´t a real difference (except the hit this turn from ASW Sallies - though I think it was just luck). No matter if ASW or nav search, so far the fewer, less experienced Betties that are searching a far bigger area performed better. Remarkable better. I will keep watching them, if the subs stay in the area long enough. When 54 Sallies will be searching then the subs will hopefully get more problems.

Yes I have. A formerly 6 DD ASW TF (one DD out of action due to a MK14 hit) and a 6 ship PC/PG ASW TF. Both tried to attack a sub last turn. The DDs normally don´t find anything, a PC dropped around 10 DCs last turn for one near miss.

Here´s the situation in Burma. My troops are south of Mandalay now. The usual tactic of Helpless of retreating everything everywhere and mass those troops at one place has brought probably more than 100.000 troops to the Mandalay area. [8|] What should I say about this tactic when my opponent complained about my tactic of going forward very fast (through COMPLETELY UNGARRISONED TERRITORY EVERYWHERE).[8|] I will most certainly attack West of Mandalay first shock attacking over the river into the 8 LCUs spotted there. I bet I will encounter some Chinese ground units also. Not much chance to cut off Mandalay as there are mountainious and wooden hexes all around. One division will stay south of Mandalay to counter a possible manouver to cut off my advancing troops. Hopefully 2500 assault points will be enough to drive out the 8 LCUs west of Mandalay. Bombing Mandalay in a big way is no option as there´s the all mighty flak of a dozen British base forces. Allied flak makes it impossible for me to attack a base, whereas heavy flak of mine isn´t able to even inflict one or two op losses when 100+ bombers are attacking. So the infantry has the honour... Don´t know if the situation in the scenarios that start in 5/42 are reflecting historical accuracy but it loos like I won´t have a chance to nearly achieve to take all those bases. Not to talk about China, no chance to take what´s already Japanese in the 5/42 scenarios it seems. So far I´m not doing really good it seems.

I know that Allied DD's get their 4/42 upgrade and almost all have an ASW factor of 4. It is not until 10/42 that some go up to an ASW value of 6 & 8. Eventually, the DE's come in with an ASW value of 11. YIKES!![X(][X(]

What does the ASW values look like for the Japanese??

Mostly 2 at the moment with many of the DDs upgrading to 4 within 42. The PC and PG have 3 or 2 like the MSW have also. At the moment the low ASW value isn´t much of a problem. The primary problem is that my DDs aren´t attacking the subs at all. If there´s an engagement then normally the DDs all fail to find the sub or are dropping only one or two times DCs whereas the Allied DDs are already spotting, attacking and dropping DCs like mad. I understand that Allied DDs are killers in 44 and 45 and subs are clearly the losers but it´s already like that right from the start of the game. The only reason I haven´t had more subs sunk is the fact that they haven´t ended up under an Allied ASW often enough so far. It´s obvious when you look at the engagements so far.

Like I said, the Allied subs are parked in and around my ports for weeks, spotted every turn (they aren´t even moved!!!!) but the Japanese DDs are doing mostly nothing - besides acting as targets!

I allied in a PBEM that is in Dec 43, the Japanese ASW was very ineffective from 42 to mid 43, primarily it was because I used my subs for transport, and put very few in the shipping lanes thus few opportunities. In early 43 when the torpedo's became better I switched to the shipping lanes and the coast of the Home Islands, this caught my opponent for a few months as a lot of shipping was unescorted and my subs had a field day, for most of 43 they averaged 1 ship sunk a day, he eventually formed up convoys and the 6 ship ASW strike groups.

What I have noticed is these groups still were ineffective initially but as their experiance increased, I started to lose subs. This was a combination of him switching leaders to more aggression, The DD's, PC ships getting more experiance, and his starting to use planes to
spot the subs.

There are some groups that I don't fear at all and there are a couple of 6 Ship ASW groups that when they show up at a base with my sub, I move the sub quickly because they are killers. Thus as your ships gain experiance they will become better, as well as the leaders and air.

One of the downfalls for my opponent is he has already lost over 80 DD's thus cannot form many of these groups, as the remaining DD's must escort his CV's and surface groups.

So build those ASW units experiance, check that leaders are good and put Naval search up is about the best you can hope for, after time some
will turn into killer units.

There are very good commanders in charge already, with the highest agression rating I could find. The DDs are already in the range of 80 exp and I doubt they will get any further. And therefore it´s even more surprising that PCs with an exp. between 40 and 50 are doing better than the DDs.

So far I had A LOT of opportunities to attack subs on the open sea and in my ports sitting there spotted for weeks. I have sunk a couple, but in comparison to the Allied it´s like I said 100:1. [8|]

This TF was spotted last turn but wasn´t attacked by my Kates (bomb range 6 - distance to target 6). Nor were they attacked this turn. There is a large base force with 8x5.5" CD and 16x4.7" DP guns that didn´t fire a shot. Supply level is 22.000. Amazingly when I see what the CD gun unit at Soerabaja is able to do with a couple of 150 mm CD guns. 11 aircraft on the ground destroyed today.

Allied Ships
DD Rathburne

next turn, next ASW TF that stumbles over a not spotted and moved sub. Sub is at 34/72 so it is considered sunk... THIS IS MARCH 42 and I really find it just laughable that Allied ASW seems to be 100% effective. Laughable compared to what I can achieve with TFs consisting of 6 DDs (that are actually more experienced than the Allied ones because of the high night experience). My TFs attack (if they even attack) subs that are spotted for days and parked in shallow waters in a base hex and they do just nothing. Whenever an Allied TF gets into the same hex as one of my subs then there´s a 100% combat that pops up and a very high probability that the sub is heavily damaged. This sub again wasn´t in shallow waters, nor was it spotted and I moved it!! Repeat: THIS IS MARCH 42! Repeat: LAUGHABLE!!!

In real life I-169 was sunk at Truk!

The I-169 was a KD 6 A (I-168) Class submarine built for the Imperial Japanese Navy and launched 15 FEB 1934. She was built by Mitsubishi of Kobe and was renamed for her last Commanding Officer LCDR Shinohara, the only survivor of her ill fated crew.

During the war the I-169 participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor, but the war’s rapid advances in submarine technology surpassed her and she was converted to an underwater transport. Her large size and long range made her perfect for this duty. After the fall of Saipan, she was one of the few ships that could keep Truk re-supplied.

The I-169 was lost in an American air attack, subsequent to the original "Hailstone" raid. As the air attack began, she dove to avoid damage but unfortunately, the crew failed to close the main induction valve and she flooded her forward compartments and sank herself.

The Japanese made immediate attempts to salvage her and discovered that some crewman had survived the sinking. The fleet tug FUTAGAMI attempted to lift her bow, but the flooded submarine was too heavy to lift and broke the hoisting cables. Due to various problems the rescue and salvage failed. All hands were lost, with the exception of her Commanding Officer, who was ashore when the attack began. Later the Japanese depth charged the forward section of the submarine.

The wreck was rediscovered in 1973 and Al Giddings made a documentary about the sub and the Japanese government’s subsequent recovery of a portion of the crew’s remains. Sadly, a Japanese diver was also lost during the recovery attempt. She now lies in 125 fsw.

IJN I-169 SUBMARINE: Displacement: 2440 tons submerged; Length: 344 feet; Beam: 27 feet; Engine: 2-9000 shp diesel and 2-1800 shp electric motors, 2 shafts; Max Range 14,000 NM; Mission: Transport; Armament: 6-21 inch torpedo tubes (14 torpedoes); 1-10 CM anti-surface gun ; machine gun; Crew: 70

The combat report shows a clear victory for the Japanese attackers. While watching the combat replay I was really SHOCKED in the beginning. [X(] My fighters were ordered to sweep on 30.000 ft and as usual the Allied defenders got the first bounce taking down 3 Oscars immediately. The bounce went on and it soon was a 6:1 for the Chinese fighters. Short before keeling over and hitting the escape key I steadily kept watching the replay when I first saw xy CFS climbing to intercept.... no more bounce... [&o][&o] and then the slaughter began... Knowing about the importance of the bounce already (and knowing that there´s a BIG problem when stacking Allied base forces in one hex) this combat has once again proved (for me) how a fight looks like when one side gets the bounce. With the bounce the Chinese biplanes achieved a 6:1 kill rate, without they lost 0:38 (have to say that 0:38 is strange also[8|]). I would really love to see more players making those observations and posting it as this perhaps would lead the responsible to take a look at the problem with stacking Allied base forces in a base which leads to a 100% NEVER ENDING bounce of the Allied defenders during an air battle! This is one of the reasons of the later UBER CAP also[8|][:(]

SS I-22, hits 2

DD Cassin, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Fourth turn in a row, fourth sub / ASW attack. This time my sub at least could shoot back and damage a DD. Unfortunately DD Tucker achieved one real hit and a near miss. Sub is at 28/36 and is heading back to Noumea on cruise speed. In about one week I will run out of subs if this will go on like this. Damn time machine warped me into 44... two of the before damaged subs sunk this turn...[8|]

USS Cassin (DD372) was destroyed at Pearl Harbour:

USS Cassin (DD-372), 1936-1947
USS Cassin, a 1,500-ton Mahan class destroyer, was built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania. Commissioned in August 1936, she operated in the Atlantic and Caribbean into 1938, steaming as far south as Brazil. In early 1938, Cassin went to the Pacific, where she remained for almost all of the rest of her career. She took part in U.S. Fleet exercises, and, as tensions with Japan increased in 1941, cruised in the South Pacific as far west as Australia.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, Cassin was in drydock at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard. Bombs and fire severely damaged her, causing her to roll off the blocks and capsize against USS Downes (DD-375), which was alongside. Both of these wrecked destroyers were the subjects of major salvage undertakings over the next months. Though the ship's hull was beyond repair, her machinery and armament were sent to the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, where they were installed in a new hull, which carried the original ship's hull number of DD-372.

The "new" USS Cassin was commissioned in February 1944. She served on escort duties in the Central Pacifc through the summer of 1944, and took part in a bombardment of Marcus Island in early October. During the Battle of Leyte Gulf later in that month, Cassin was part of the escort for the fast carriers' Task Force 38. During the rest of the Pacific War she operated out of the Marianas, bombarding Iwo Jima in November 1944 and January 1945, and playing a supporting role in the conquest of that island during February and March. She survived an encounter with a typhoon in June and was active in the Iwo Jima area into August. USS Cassin was sent to the Atlantic later in 1945 and decommissioned at Norfolk, Virginia, in December. She was sold for scrapping in November 1947.

Just so you (and everyone else) know - I discovered a while back that altitude in fighter combat determines nothing. I am pretty sure it's in the manual - altitude determines flak values, bombing accuracy, and how many fighters get up to altitude to intercept bombers (and escort)...however - altitude does not effect fighter combat per say..

Fighter combat is determined only by who has initial advantage (the bounce) - and I don't know how the program determines that, but altitude is not a parameter. In determining fighter combat, All aircraft automatically move to the same level to begin combat.

So that would explain why you may choose to come in at 30,000 feet - yet still get "bounced"....the program will just put them at the same altitude and begin air combat routines.

Holy smokes, must have PDU on.  I'm drueling for that many Oscars.  Long time before I hope for that many!

How is your strategic map situation and ships/aircraft & sunk/loss ratio?  I'm fumbling badly in my first PBEM as Japan in BigB Mod and want to see just how far behind I am (err, it's not me, it's the torpedoes [8|])

hmmmmmm..... next encounter..... to repeat the same old story: sub was moved last turn, sub wasn´t spotted.... 100% efficiency of Allied ASW in MARCH 42..... The "new" ASW routine has made Allied subs be able to survive later in the game (good)... it has lead to Japanese subs not sinking immediately but two turns later (haha)...

REPEAT THE REPEATED: This is march 42 and 90% of the encounters of Japanese subs (that are moved every turn, not spotted for weeks, not sitting in a base hex, not in shallow water.... anything else that I´m doing "right" and my Allied opponent doing "wrong"??) ends in a kill... [8|][8|]

Drugs make your life easier and soon you will find yourself next to Alice and the bunny in Wonderland...

FORGOTTEN TO SAY: This is MARCH 42...

I-2 is at 48/37 so "normally" I should be able to at least save her... waiting for the next ASW kill next round...

crossed the river from Pagan to the hex West of Mandalay this turn. Bloody as expected. There are 7 Chinese units defending the hex. All in all there are over 200.000 troops reported in the Mandalay area. This means despite bringing 3000 assault points I´m stalled again as I probably will need 6000 assault points. This attack wrecked a brigade completely. Down from 99/100 to 52/96... [8|] Here I am again, facing the "retreat everything to a place where you can mass all you have tactic" .... No idea how I should take this area against 200.000 troops that are fighting here for the first time and never had to retreat.

As a side note: THE FOLLOW UNIT ORDER IS COMPLETELY BS!!! All the units were ordered to follow a HQ. All units crossed the river but the HQ has reset itself to defend at the hex they started to move... . It sits there now as bringing more troops to the other side is suicide... Good design desicion that you have always to shock attack over a river, even when 1.000.000 troops are already on the other side having occupied a "beachhead". If Helpless is smart he will just shift 500 assault points more from Mandalay to the hex West of M. (and I´m expecting him to do that) and voilà, there´s no chance to drive them out of the wooden hex when you face a troop number 1:1.

Am I the only one who´s experiencing a completely broken follow unit order???

As we have agreed on not discussing things anymore by email, at least I don´t hear complaints about my "fast" advance... I won´t be able to nearly achieve what was achieved in real life (except taking New Caledonia) even though I haven´t diverted any divisions to places they shouldn´t have gone. The problem I have is that I never face "small" fortresses with smaller numbers of troops but everytime one big stack with the same number of defenders like I have attackers available. Okay, I can advance fast but in the end it will take me far longer to take down one such super defense point - if I will ever be able to take it.

Attack on Manila ordered again... will try to wreck my next division... [:D]
