I-16c x 27

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 6 destroyed, 2 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
I-153c: 14 destroyed
I-16c: 25 destroyed

The combat report shows a clear victory for the Japanese attackers. While watching the combat replay I was really SHOCKED in the beginning. [X(] My fighters were ordered to sweep on 30.000 ft and as usual the Allied defenders got the first bounce taking down 3 Oscars immediately. The bounce went on and it soon was a 6:1 for the Chinese fighters. Short before keeling over and hitting the escape key I steadily kept watching the replay when I first saw xy CFS climbing to intercept.... no more bounce... [&o][&o] and then the slaughter began... Knowing about the importance of the bounce already (and knowing that there´s a BIG problem when stacking Allied base forces in one hex) this combat has once again proved (for me) how a fight looks like when one side gets the bounce. With the bounce the Chinese biplanes achieved a 6:1 kill rate, without they lost 0:38 (have to say that 0:38 is strange also[8|]). I would really love to see more players making those observations and posting it as this perhaps would lead the responsible to take a look at the problem with stacking Allied base forces in a base which leads to a 100% NEVER ENDING bounce of the Allied defenders during an air battle! This is one of the reasons of the later UBER CAP also[8|][:(]

Just so you (and everyone else) know - I discovered a while back that altitude in fighter combat determines nothing. I am pretty sure it's in the manual - altitude determines flak values, bombing accuracy, and how many fighters get up to altitude to intercept bombers (and escort)...however - altitude does not effect fighter combat per say..

Fighter combat is determined only by who has initial advantage (the bounce) - and I don't know how the program determines that, but altitude is not a parameter. In determining fighter combat, All aircraft automatically move to the same level to begin combat.

So that would explain why you may choose to come in at 30,000 feet - yet still get "bounced"....the program will just put them at the same altitude and begin air combat routines.

Brian

Yes I know that altitude doesn´t effect a sweep. I´m just used to set them to a higher altitude like I did that all the time until I was told it doesn´t matter.... [8|] Some time ago I opened a thread about Allied fighters on CAP getting the bounce endlessly in A2A when fighting over their own base where many base forces are stacked.

I was then told that a) altitude doesn´t matter (smart design decision, isn´t it?? ) and b) that the base forces raise the detection level of the sweeping attackers in such heights that the defenders get the bounce on and on and on and on... endlessly... [8|]

It seems for most people the bounce isn´t seen as such an important factor as it in fact is (and should be IMO)! Otherwise I can´t explain myself why there weren´t more complaints. Perhaps many people don´t watch the replay or are just not watching close enough to see what´s going on. Just look at my example with the Oscar vs the obsolete Chinese biplanes. The Oscar pilots are exp. between 75 and 81 while the Chinese have to be somewhere in the 50s (or lower?). The comparison of the Chinese fighters to the Oscar at this date is like the comparison of the early Zero against a Corsair. While the overall result was like an engagement of the early Zero against the Corsair, the result of the bounce phase was a clear 6:1 for the Chinese fighters, which then lost without the bounce 0:38 [8|]!!!!!

So getting the bounce endlessly causes results that are far from what they would look like without the bounce. If the mighty radar bonus (there´s a randomness factor since the last patch... [&o] - we´ll see...[:D]) is able to get the first bounce to the defender, good, but there has to come the moment when the bounce ends. In the examples I´ve seen, there were Hurricanes bouncing Tojos for 10 minutes of combat replays. And that´s physically just not possible, yet the radar made it possible in those encounters... endlessly...

Holy smokes, must have PDU on.  I'm drueling for that many Oscars.  Long time before I hope for that many!

How is your strategic map situation and ships/aircraft & sunk/loss ratio?  I'm fumbling badly in my first PBEM as Japan in BigB Mod and want to see just how far behind I am (err, it's not me, it's the torpedoes [8|])

Yes, PDU is on. And I´m glad about that, as this will bring me in the position to equip the IJA with Tojos and Tonies that perhaps can do "some" damage to the 4Es. Though at the moment the majority of the IJA fighter daitais are flying Nates (on training misssions) as I´m only producing 90 Oscars a month and have suffered serious losses in the past.

As requested, here´s the strategic map:

and here´s the intel screen:

without the first couple of turns where 400 or 500 planes were destroyed on the ground I would nearly be at 1:1 in plane losses... [8|]

Only area where I´m doing "good" so far is the ship sinkings. CV Yorktown, BB Tennessee and a dozen of CAs and CLs. Though this is not because of me doing good but because of my opponent sending the BB and the cruisers on IMO suicide missions.

In fact, use of KB was a disaster against the Allied CVs as I was dumb enough to click on "naval search" instead of "naval attack" for ALL of my KB Vals.

please take a look at my adjusted assault value... would love to post it on main forum to hear some smart guy explaining this... got 3 HQs there now, support is green for all my inf units... they had twice the supply needed because two turns ago bombardment and last turn they rested... they have 100 or nearly 100 prep points... 50.000+ supply in the Philipines... and then I get an adjusted assault of 427

the Allied side: Is bombed now for nearly 4 months, has no supply (there´s not a single flak burst from a dozen base forces, so there can´t be supply left) - I achieved surely more than 200 supply hits so far and the airfield was repaired surely 20 times or more from 100%, they don´t have high forts BUT they sit in an urban hex.... and therefore their assault value is adjusted from 2000 to nearly 5000!!!!!!

ground combat (and movement) in WITP is a thing of it´s own but when it comes to ground combat in urban hexes the game goes completely crazy... I lost again more than 500 assault points this turn when I look at the unit info screen... [X(][X(] This is worth more than a division. [>:] You can live with a 0:1 assault but you really get problems if your opponent has assault values that high because that means A LOT of losses for you!

I have now two completely wrecked divisions (both are around 50/93). What I like the most are the smart guys telling me that those are just disablements... it will take three months to get those divisions back to 100%... then it´s JULY... Heyyyyy, let´s try the next attack in July... [&o]All in all I had 5 undamaged divisions, 1 big brigade, 5 eng regiments, half a dozen art units and a couple of base forces that were sent to attack Manila - after months of air and ground bombardment.

Now two divisions (the ones that are still in good shape) are sent to Bataan as well as two eng regiments. They will be first shipped to Mindanao to clear the island (like this game has gone so far two divisions won´t be enough against the couple of units there - surely sitting all at one place). Then those more or less wrecked troops will be sent to Java to take Soerabaja - hopefully, I´m not sure about...

And the best news at the end of this post!

TATAAAAAAAA: A new bug! This turn I wanted to expand one of my Tabby factories. Clicking on the base, into the aircraft factory I don´t see the "expand button". Hmmm, want to expand it from 20 to 40 and there are 34000 supplies at that base, so why doesn´t that work??? I wasn´t really excited at that moment. Then I checked another base if I can expand any factory there. NO???? WTH????? There is no HI, plane, armor, vehicle, merchant shipyard or naval shipyard on the whole map that I am able to expand!!!!!!!! No matter how big it is and no matter how many supplies there are, I´VE COMPLETELY LOST THE EXPAND BUTTON!!!!

Great! Hope it works again next turn... If not... Game over...

The funny thing is that first all DDs failed to find the sub, but of course the search started off again.... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Historical accuracy of Allied ASW in March 42... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

What am I supposed to do? Take my subs to Korea disbanding them in port? It´s surely just my special copy of the game....

Other important things:

expanding of factories works again...[&o] typical WITP anomaly...

trying to get 200 bombers with 100+ escorts to attack Mandalay for three turns now... No chance, clouds over Rangoon or they just don´t like to fly. The HQ there was ordered to shoot 3 pilots every turn they refuse to fly. Happy that the British have bombing weather all those turns. [:D]Wonder how long it will take when 150 Allied bombers come to visit Rangoon and torch the 350 planes on the ground. No cap as I need all the escort I can get.

Japanese news agencies announce another victory of the Japanese armed forces!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/26/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Burma Area Army, at 32,30

Allied aircraft
P-40C Tomahawk x 29

No Allied losses

This is the AVG flying sweeps over my troops West of Mandalay to prevent me from LRCAP (something I won´t do anyway at that range from Rangoon). AVG is now flying P40C as they ran out of the originally Curtis models they flew (which have better stats as the P40C)

Runway hits 54

Aircraft Attacking:
15 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 12000 feet

finally... at the fourth day after ordering the bombing of the heavily defended Mandalay airbase the bombers took off with a heavy escort. Most of the shot down Zeroes were killed by the AVG (which is doing very good, even when flying "only" the P40C) Glad that the majority of the AVG was on sweep and not on CAP as I would have achieved a 1:1 against the AVG at best. AMAZINGLY there wasn´t the from me expected "all time, never ending bounce" for the Allied, which saved my day and so I was able to achieve nearly a 2:1 in A2A (not exciting for Zeroes in early 42 but I can live with it). After the initial phase where my planes were bounced it went on as "normal" A2A with climbing, intercepting, engaging.... the flak wasn´t as effective as I expected it to be though due to a heavy clouded airfield the hits achieved by 200 bombers weren´t also like I expected it. Another raid will be launched tomorrow, hopefully...

spotted some AKs at Cagayan last turn and moved in a daitai of 77 exp Vals. Don´t know where they are moving, if it´s Manila then they are toast with all the Sallies there and DDs to intercept them. Also have a DD TF hunting them next turn, though it will only be luck if I will gues the right hex.

Here are the aircraft losses for this day! I´m very happy with my flak, as they were able to take down 7 out of the 128 attacking bombers. Not a killer but IMO also not unrealistic with the high number of guns I have there.

103 Allied planes lost today. The Kittyhawks are Aussies flying in Burma but they are not nearly as effective as the AVG which has a couple of pilots in it with more than ten kills. I would guess the AVG has around 150-200 kills so far which means they have shot down far more planes than they have lost theirselfs. AVG must have an average exp of far over 70 I think while my Zeroes are becoming worse and worse with replacements of 30-35 exp pilots. One daitai was completely shredded this turn and will be sent for training the next 4-6 months. Won´t take long and I´m running out of Zero daitais as I´m only having a good dozen land based Zeroe daitais.

The Mohawks aren´t freightening me as I welcome every British pilots that comes towards my Zeroes in a Mohawk but it´s very satisfying to see that 63 Hurricanes were lost this turn. I don´t know exactly how many are coming as replacement every month but I think it´s not more than 40-50. And what´s even better is that the British pilot replacement rate is also just somewhere around 30 a month!!! [:D] Though they started with a couple of hundred so they won´t run out really fast (I ran out of pilots long ago...).

While this looks really good now, a foundering British airforce in India can also lead to more US fighters and bombers in India which wouldn´t be good at all for my position in Burma.

Using the bug that makes it possible to transfer planes by RAIL OVER TRAILS!!!! Fucking bugs!! Would be time to start another discussion about bug exploiting... As a long time WITP player my opponent should now that he should not be able to transfer all those squadrons out by -r... So he is deliberately using this bug to save his planes... Can´t say that I like it. Perhaps he finds something about my playing style to complain about in the near future... [8|][8|][8|][8|][8|]

GOD DAMN!! WHERE IS THE SURPRISE! The surprise was on my side! I have brought every available Betty from the South Pacific to Noumea. There were 150+ Betties set on naval attack 15 hexes (torp range) and 81 Zeroes on escort. All were 0 fatigued. I have a HQ and a lot of supplies! There can´t go something wrong and YES, my planes all launch at the carrier TF............................................. and fail to find it.... [8|][8|][8|] in the morning....... DAMN.... there´s still the afternoon phase...... no clouds.... YES....... my planes launch AGAIN........ YES........ AND FAIL TO FIND TARGET AGAIN!!!!!!.

150 Betties against those 3 carriers would have really been nice, but they twice fail to find target...

OH MAN... [8|][8|][8|]

Bad luck, it will change sometime... Though what really made me upset this turn is using this bug to move out ALL damaged planes from Mandalay... such things just suck hard!!! [:-][:-][:-][:-]

I asked Helpless if he used the "bug" that makes it possible to transfer damaged planes over the trail to India and he said: "YES". lol, first I thought I shouldn´t take his answer serious, but.... yes he did.

I have to say that this was´t something I was not happy about at all and the discussions started again, it´s okay for Helpless, but it is in no way okay for me.... Once again the game was near an end and using trails for "-r" transferring aircrafts is now restricted as I wouldn´t have wanted to play on (I think it´s enough that he already has safed a lot planes the last turn...). Would be cool if this would be fixed with a patch... [8|] Came with 1.8x I think...

This was NOT good. First strike wasn´t able to find the target (must be hard to find for the pilots when they have been flying to exactly that target for weeks). Then a small rest of the strike found the target but the escort did nothing and the fighters attacked the bombers. 3 lost A2A but with the very low morale of the fighters they turned back after some were damaged... pfffffffff[&o]

I have taken out the hammer! Slightly more than 10.000 assault points are marching towards Homan! Around 4.000 will siege the city, while 6.000 will bypass the city to the South to block reinforcements. One brigade will move North. Then my troops will just sit there, waiting for the counterattack. When the base is surrounded the 135 Sallies will begin to bring down the supply level. Perhaps in 6-8 weeks (or longer) I will try an attack - if I´m still in position then. I have brought the majority of the availabel supplies to China, so that shouldn´t be an issue.

All my front line bases are now level 9 fort and in Changsha there are 40+ Chinese LCUs sitting. Perhaps they will march towards Nanchang again. They will meet 2100 assault points there. 1700 are at Wuhan (urban hex) where I could transfer another division to Nanchang if needed.

The plan is to have my opponent attack and bleed hisself. Months later we will try to have 25 Chinese LCUs in Homan either dead or as POW!

AK Prominent, Shell hits 13, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

This is one of the single ship TFs that is steaming around Mindanao! The Vals refuse to attack them so this was caught in the open sea with some DDs... was quickly shot to pieces!

While I´ve heard people complaining about not seeing their planes attacking single ship TFs I have never had this problem before. In this game it seems different though as my planes perhaps attack only 1 out of 5 single ship TFs. For example, there are two AKs circling around New Caledonia (range 7 from Noumea) and neither my Sallies nor Betties attack them! First I thought they would be subs, spotted as AKs, but in the meantime they are identified as AK Mungana and another AK. Don´t know what they are doing there but Helpless is sending them back and forth for a week now. They are never attacked! [:(][8|] Must be some decoy or whatever. Single ship TFs don´t get attacked it seems. Never had this problem but I also never had an opponent that is using 99% single ship TFs when in range of my bombers... I would call it at least semi gamey while my opponent is surely thinking different about it! [8|]

In China the showdown is nearing! In the Homan-Sian-area Helpless has moved 17 additional units from Sian towards Homan. My units will enter Homan next turn (around 4.100 assault points). If the Chinese move into Homan then there will be 42!!!!! [X(][X(][X(] Chinese LCUs. Let´s say 10 are support units then there are 32 Inf units with around 250 assault points each. I would guess I will meet a max of 7.000 assault points. Hopefully my troops can hold the position (all are 100% prepped). My big plus should be my artillery (if this has any effect in the WITP ground combat model) as I have brought more than a dozen artillery units. When my units have entered Homan and I see what Helpless will do then I will set the 6.000 assault points on go to encircle the city.

In the South the reaction of the Chinese is a move of 6 LCUs towards Canton (urban hex, 1000 assault points, fort 9 - so no chance for them) and 37!!!!! [X(][X(][X(] LCUs are moving from Changsha on the rail towards Wuhan!!! This is great as Wuhan is also an urban hex with level 9 forts. 2000 assault points will await the Chinese offensive. I really wonder why the Chinese are heading towards Wuhan and not on Nanchang again. In 5 days another two of the smaller divisions (330 assault points each) will arrive in China... Would have been smarter to wait a week longer until they arrive perhaps. We will see 10.000s of casualties soon me thinks! [:D] All in all I think Japan has 10.000 assault points on the move at the moment and the Chinese around 15.000 - 17.000! [X(]

In China another 8!!! LCUs left Chungking (spotted troops 80.000 plus) moving North towards Sian. All Chinese LCUs around Homan have moved into Homan (44 units there now [X(]). My troops will enter tomorrow. 43 units are now marching towards Wuhan! [X(] The f***ing follow unit order once again doesn´t work, the HQ that was the lead unit set itself to defend, all units that were following are at 46 miles still moving towards Homan (screen says "following 3rd Army HQ"... ). Same as in Burma. The three tank units are following a HQ which travelled 45 miles so far. The tanks are at 23 miles. Next round the HQ should move but it will reset to defend, then the tanks are at 46 (wonder why it´s always 46...) and will move even though they are set to follow a unit that hasn´t moved... Fatigue or morale isn´t a problem, the problem is the follow unit order isn´t working at all. But the river crossing rule works perfect.... [8|] GROUND MOVEMENT IS COMPLETELY BORKED.... AT LEAST GROUND MOVEMENT WORKED WITH EARLIER VERSIONS.... I DON´T NEED TO TELL WHAT I THINK ABOUT GROUND COMBAT... I JUST FOLLOW THE COMMON OPPINION ABOUT IT... [8|][8|][8|]

I was unlucky and lucky at the same time with this strike! Unlucky because I first saw "Sally fails to find target" [X(][X(] and lucky because when the rest of the ordered strike (consisting of 200 bombers and 100 escorts) went in there were still half of the escorts with the bombers. Often I have seen first the bombers fail to find target and then a smaller part of the bombers goes in without escort.... This leads to a disaster of course. Only 11 runway hits... 140 bombers more would have done a nice damage me thinks...[:(] At nearly no cost because there is very weak AA fire! 7 Zeroes lost (4 A2A, 3 due to ops... 6 pilots dead... hopefully newbs! now that´s something... Another bug? Must be! All those Nates are set on AIRFIELD attack (Manila) but the join the 3 Sallies that attack the single AK. Sallies plant two 250kg AP bombs into the ship while the Nates score 9x30 kg bomb hits! While bombers set on naval attack more or less refuse to attack single ship TFs it seems it´s no problem for fighters that are set on airfield attack to attack those ships... WEIRD! I double checked the setting of the fighters and they were only set on airfield attack, like those who did the af attack this turn. [&:]

I can´t count on my bombers to attack those single ship TFs that are bringing in supply, so I have to send MSWs!!!!! to Manila. It´s depressing enough that the AK made it to Manila... [:(] The smallest ships I have, armed with only a 3" gun put 12 shells into Solviken. 3 MSW boosted their daylight experience between 5 and 9 points!! [X(][:D]

OH MY GOD!!!!

There aren´t the expected 7000 assault points, but nearly 9000! [X(][X(][X(] Look at the attached screenshot, I didn´t know the Chinese have divisions that strong... in fact they seem to be stronger than the IJA divisions... not good... not good... [:(] All my troops that are trying to encircle Homan have already moved off the rail and it will take a couple of days to bring another two divisions to Homan. Though tomorrow there will be two 300+ assault point divisions entering Homan. I would expect Helpless to set his troops on attack this turn when he sees that he has already a 2:1 advantage...[:(]

I fear Kendari will soon be no longer to hold (if Helpless keeps up the attacks...). I lost 8 fighters A2A and 11 are reported destroyed on the ground. 10 or 11 pilots were lost... 3 of the bombers turned back, 10 were reported shot down and 1 was lost to ops. And I was even lucky as the strike should have been much bigger I think as first "B17 failed to find target"!. The Oscars damaged a couple of the bombers but no Oscar unit was accounted with a kill. Many bombers were damaged by flak also. Hopefully they suffered serious moral hits, so if they come for another visit more will be turned back!

This turn I lost more planes at Kendari than the Allied lost attacking bombers...

wow, 18.612 casualties! The Chines nearly lost half of their guns. Wonder how their assault value will look next turn. Looks like we´re in a better position now after this "failed" attack (even if it was a 1:1 such losses are severe for the attacker!). Though our adjusted assault value was lower as expected... [:(] We can bring up our assault value by another 1000 points within the next couple of days. When forts go up we will be pretty safe I think. In the next two days the first tank regiments will cut off Homan on the rail to the West, the majority of the 5.000 assault points will follow within the next week hopefully!

The before mentioned reinforcement of two divisions in China have arrived. Despite having 22.000 arm points in the pool both divisions arrived at 24/24 strenght! [8|][:(][:(][:(]

So the assumptions on the forum, that 10.000 arm points are enough to equip a whole division can´t be true... Would be good to know how many I really need to equip one, even though I couldn´t have get more at this point of the game... [:(]

70th Division alone needs 15,925 armament points and 15,925 manpower points available in the pool to fully equip.
