AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/23/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOUNCE!!! BOUNCE!!! BOUNCE!!!

Day Air attack on Homan , at 49,30

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 72
Ki-21 Sally x 190

Allied aircraft
P-40C Tomahawk x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 2 destroyed
Ki-21 Sally: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40C Tomahawk: 15 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
157 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 33
Airbase supply hits 10
Runway hits 91

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

This is the mighty AVG flying LRCAP (range 4)! I feared to see them doing that and this turn it actually happened. The last time when my 80 exp. Oscars met the AVG it was the 38:0 disaster [X(][X(] so I don´t really want to have Oscars meeting the AVG (as the AVG is even more exp in the meantime). So the replay started and it started off like I expected it to be... AVG climbing... AVG bounces xy fighter Sentai... P40C shooting from behind at Oscar... boom boom... 2 Oscars lost... Oh crap... sh*t... ..... then, AVG climbing to intercept... NO BOUNCE... [&o] P40C engaging Oscar and vice versa... The Oscars evaded mostly while the P40C were hit but only damaged (the Oscar´s gun value is too low so it only can shoot a P40 down if it´s engaging it from behind). THEN.... AVG climbing to intercept... xy fighter Sentai BOUNCES AVG!!!!! and this meant A HUGE advantage. Oscar shooting from behind... boom boom boom... AVG with bounce kills 2 Oscars, AVG without the bounce - Oscars evading, Oscars without the bounce - damaging a couple of P40, Oscars with the bounce are killing 15 P-40. The same Oscars that were killed 38:0 in the last engagement against the AVG when the AVG had the 100% bounce. Luckily there isn´t radar cover over all Chinese bases.

I just can repeat myself! The BOUNCE is the most important thing in A2A, it´s more important than speed or gun value or whatever... with the bounce you get to shoot at your enemy from behind and shooting from behind kills! The Oscars damage a P40 9 out of 10 times when only "shooting" at the P-40 but killing them 8 out of 10 times when "shooting from behind". It´s the same with the obsolete Chinese fighters, flown by pilots that are only half as experienced like my Oscar pilots, when they have the bounce they take down Oscars 2 or 3:1, without the bounce they get killed 0:15...

THE BOUNCE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN A2A!!! Now I´m back at the problem I have to face. What makes fighters getting the bounce on and on? RADAR! It won´t take long and the whole frontline on the map is covered by Allied radar (must be some AWACs around in WWII[:D]). The radar of a couple of base forces at one base raises the detection level of the enemy (so in that case of the Japanese) that high that Allied fighters (no matter if on CAP, sweep or escort) get the bounce 90% of the engagements and mostly having it on and on during the whole A2A engagements.

While I know that in real life bouncing was the preferred Allied tactic it is just not always possible to have the bounce for the whole engagement. Just think about the Chinese biplanes! How should they be able to bounce Oscars on and on and on. Don´t think they have the performance for that. Though with enough radar it is possible to have them bouncing on and on.

Radar is the number one "weapon" when it comes to the slaughters starting in 43! Hopefully the "randomness of radar" implemented with the new patch is working... [;)]

we have a house rule of not more than 6 ship ASW TFs. I thought such a house rule would also include ships in transfer. I don´t think this is a ASW TF hunting for my subs (once again it stumbled just over it), though when I transfer DDs then in no more than 6 ship TFs.. [8|]

While it´s a wonder that the sub survived in fact it is the same as it is sunk! This attack produced ANOTHER BUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just look at my sub. It should have (and had before) mine laying devices. They aren´t damaged, as they would still show up but only in red. THEY F***ING VANISHED! Which means this "mine laying sub" can be considered sunk also...[:@][:@][:@]

What do your BF's up in Burma have in regards to radar??
If they don't have radar, then what do they have to help detect Allied raids??
I though there were problems regarding detection values (is there a thread on this somewhere??).

No radar. The Japanese base forces have sound detectors (as they should have). Don´t know if they will ever get radar, the latest game I have running is in 11/43 now (whithout radar). While I don´t think the sound detectors should work better (I don´t know if they are doing anything - I have never seen a difference of fighting somewhere the sd are present or somewhere they aren´t present), though I think Allied radar just works too good. It should give some early warning, it should give some tactical advantage. But stacking Allied base forces with radar means having the bounce perhaps 90% of the time for the full lenght of the A2A combat and that out to 5 or 6 hexes. And that´s IMO not like it should be. As said before no matter how bad the plane, with enough radar (and therefore a high detection level) it makes even obsolete planes killers.

new ASW TF arrived at Rangoon. What is strange also is the fact that the day a ASW TF enters a hex with a sub in it usually is the day it also attacks. After that the sub can just sit there and nothing happens... as seen with Trusty that sits there for two weeks now (under one of my ASW TFs... )

BB Yamato arrived today!!!

I accelerated the ship after two of my BBs got damaged and I thought it would a good idea to have her a couple of weeks earlier. She will now go to Truk!

-- JAPANESE NAVY SHIPS --
Yamato (Battleship, 1941-1945)
Yamato, lead ship of a class of two 65,000-ton (over 72,800-tons at full load) battleships, was built at Kure, Japan. She and her sister, Musashi were by far the largest battleships ever built, even exceeding in size and gun caliber (though not in weight of broadside) the U.S. Navy's abortive Montana class. Their nine 460mm (18.1-inch) main battery guns, which fired 1460kg (3200 pound) armor piercing shells, were the largest battleship guns ever to go to sea, and the two ships' scale of armor protection was also unsurpassed.

Commissioned in December 1941, just over a week after the start of the Pacific war, Yamato served as flagship of Combined Fleet commander Isoroku Yamamoto during the critical battles of 1942. During the following year, she spent most of her time at Truk, as part of a mobile naval force defending Japan's Centeral Pacific bases. Torpedoed by USS Skate (SS-305) in December 1943, Yamato was under repair until April 1944, during which time her anti-aircraft battery was considerably increased. She then took part in the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June and the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October. During the latter action, she was attacked several times by U.S. Navy aircraft, and fired her big guns in an engagement with U.S. escort carriers and destroyers off the island of Samar.

Yamato received comparatively light damage during the Leyte Gulf battle, and was sent home in November 1944. Fitted with additional anti-aircraft machine guns, she was based in Japan during the winter of 1944-45. Attacked by U.S. Navy carrier planes in March 1945, during raids on the Japanese home islands, she was again only lightly damaged. The following month, she was assigned to take part in the suicidal "Ten-Go" Operation, a combined air and sea effort to destroy American naval forces supporting the invasion of Okinawa. On 7 April 1945, while still some 200 miles north of Okinawa, Yamato was attacked by a massive force of U.S. carrier planes and sunk.

After the war, the great battleship became an object of intense fascination in Japan, as well as in foreign countries. Yamato's remains were located and examined in 1985 and again examined, more precisely, in 1999. She lies in two main parts in some 1000 feet of water. Her bow portion, severed from the rest of the ship in the vicinity of the second main battery turret, is upright. The midships and stern section is upside down nearby, with a large hole in the lower starboard side close to the after magazines.

Half of the Chinese reinforcements are one hex South of Ichang and will be expected to be in the Sian area within the next 2 or 3 weeks. Then I will face around 15.000 assault points there. This will mean I will have to further decrease the troops sieging Homan and bring them in position to block the incoming Chinese juggernaut!

Area of New Caledonia! Allied subs make it "impossible" for me to get to Norfolk island. I think as it is now it´s just far too dangerous to run KB, a big surface combat group, a transport and replenishment group and an ASW TF over all those subs that will be placed in my was when I will head for Norfolk... ASW TFs and ASW planes have been absolutely useless so far.

Castor, are you an alias of Ron Sauracker?

[:D][:D][:D] You´re the second one who asked me this in the last couple of days! The first one was Pauk! Because I said it´s laughable that Akagi is 500 lb bomb proof in stock....[;)]

No, I´m Austrian and Ron is Canadian! Though I have to say the longer I play this game (nearly three years now) and the more I look closely at it, the more I have to complain. Now I´m doing an AAR so if I complain about something (like needing 30-40 attacks of 6 DD ASW TFs to sink a single sub that can sit spotted in port for weeks) then it´s something people actually see from my AAR! Like this last turn I find it strange when I order 68 Zeroes on escort and 67 on Cap and then see 96 on escort and 39 on Cap... not strange, no, not strange...[8D]

But then of course perhaps I was shipped the "special Ron Saueracker copy" and the game is only working "strange" on my computer (and on Ron´s of course...).[:D]

This AK was spotted for at least four turns also as it came North from Northern Australia heading towards Soerabaja. Now two hexes out of the base it was finally attacked and sunk. As I didn´t count on my bombers to launch (they had a couple of chances to do) I sent out a surface TF to Soerabaja that is now heading back to it´s home base.

AK Soerabaja is sunk while bringing supplies to Soerabaja... [:D]

The Dolphin was hit by a Sally today...

-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --
USS Dolphin (SS-169), 1932-1946
USS Dolphin, a 1560-ton submarine built by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine, was commissioned in June 1932. She was transferred to the Pacific later in that year and operated out of San Diego, California for most of the next five years. Dolphin's base was moved westward to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in December 1937. She was in port there on 7 December 1941, when the devastating Japanese surprise attack brought the United States into World War II.

Later in the month Dolphin began her first war patrol, a cruise in the Marshall Islands that was marked by constant mechanical difficulties, a common situation in submarines of her vintage. Despite these problems, she was able to gather important intelligence information before returning to Pearl Harbor in February 1942. Following repairs, in early June she performed picket duties during the battle of Midway and, during the next two months, patrolled the waters off Japan. Her third, and final, war patrol was made in the Kurile Islands beginning in October 1942.

The mechanically-troubled Dolphin was withdrawn from combat duty after her return from the stormy northern Pacific. She was thereafter used for training work, initially at Pearl Harbor and, from March 1944, at New London, Connecticut. Decommissioned in October 1945, some weeks after the end of the war, USS Dolphin was sold for scrapping in August 1946.

Have seen better looking subs...

AK Malda, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

then RO-34 expands it´s last salvo of torps on the heavily damaged ship... needless to say it sunk... 2500 troops are reported at Norfolk so the regiment I will send in should hopefully not have much of a problem. My TFs are 11 hexes away from Auckland at the moment and were spotted today by a B17 E. [:(] I bet Helpless has moved most of his B17 Es from Darwin to NZ. Will try to stay at a range of 11 at least as the B17 E has a normal range of 10 hexes. From 11 to 13 hexes it carries "only" 6x500 lb bombs. No attack this turn though, perhaps the moral is still too low or the KB Cap scared them. All Zeroes are on escort 80% Cap. Kates on nav attack and Vals on nav attack 20% search to scare some subs.

One sub (K-IX) was hit by a Sally today and again by a Val... it was sunk... [&o]

In a combined attack of IJA Sallies on long range anti sub duty and by IJN Vals stationed aboard carriers near Norfolk island the Dutch submarine K-IX was sunk by two 250kg AP bombs. While succesfully, it´s recommended not to use medium AP bombs against submarines... [:D]

Here we go!

While my (second) drive to Norfolk Island was also planned to eventually force the USN to fight I was nevertheless surprised that my opponent decided to attack with three carriers against my full carrier stack with over 400 carrier planes (house rule max 450 carrier planes in one hex). Needless to say I had more than one heart attack watching the combat replay...

As during our last CV clash, we had both a high CAP setting again. I had my Zeroes on 80% and it looks like Helpless again went with 90% CAP. Again I have to say that I was absolutely NOT lucky with the circumstances and you could expect to get some better die rolls. [;)] First thing was that in the morning my carriers were clouded while in strike range and while the US CVs were NOT clouded but didn´t launch due to the range[8|][8|] (same sh*t as during our first carrier battle... unbelievable). Then Noumea was also clouded in the morning so no (unescorted) strike - range would have been 15 hexes (torp range). Out of 108 Betties for sure a couple of dozen would have made it through the Cap and perhaps could score a nice hit here and there. Though that´s just a COULD! Afternoon phase: I see all US TFs reacting towards my carriers bringing them at extreme short range (2 hexes [X(]). Then I was lucky as B17-E tried an attack but failed to find targets (don´t know how many, but they would have shredded at least my CAP if there would have been more than 40, not to talk about the danger to my carriers). Of course Noumea was clouded also in the afternoon phase! [:@][:@] Weather forecast overcast... Now with the US CVs in perfect striking range of 54 Zeroes and 108 Betties! [8|] Oh well... Then the carrier strike planes come in! A perfectly coordinated US strike. The US CVs in seperate TFs but still I´m surprised as so far I never managed to do that two times in a row in two carrier engagements in early 42. My opponent had the right die rolls this turn to manage doing that! [:D] Of course this was the point where my heart stopped beating for a moment! More than 200 planes are coming towards my CAP of 135 Zeroes! [X(] The little escort wasn´t a match, the Devastators also weren´t hard to bring down but the SBDs proved once again to be very hard to shoot down for a Zero! Though without having to fight escort fighters the Zero pilots had a lot of time to engage the SBDs and manage to shoot down nearly half of the strike. Interesting that parts of VS-3 were turned back twice! [X(]

Still dozens of bombers came in against my TF and the first run was made by two TBDs that were in torp range. They surprise the flak crews and launch their torps (dud rate 50%) and manage to hit CV Akagi with one torp that explodes! DAMN! [:D] Double DAMN as this hit also does severe damage to the ship as you will see in the later posted ship screen. Wonder why the combat report says AKAGI not heavily damaged... [&:] Also CV Shokaku was hit hard with one 1000 lb bomb that caused an ammo storage explosion... OUCH! Couldn´t that damn bomb just hit the belt armor?? [:D]

CVE Taiyo and CV Junyo were both hit by two 1000 lb bombs but no follow up explosions were reported! [&o] All in all this attack could have been worse for me but it could also have been far better, if no completely coordinated strike and if the single torp hit by the TBDs would have been a dud or would not have been causing that much damage. [:D]

Day Air attack on TF at 62,120

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 135

Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 2
F4F-4 Wildcat x 9
SBD Dauntless x 143
TBD Devastator x 61

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 4 destroyed, 13 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-3 Wildcat: 2 destroyed
F4F-4 Wildcat: 9 destroyed
SBD Dauntless: 73 destroyed
TBD Devastator: 43 destroyed

CVE Taiyo, Bomb hits 2, on fire
BB Hiei
CV Shokaku, Bomb hits 1, on fire
CVL Shoho
CV Junyo, Bomb hits 2, on fire
BB Kirishima
CS Nisshin
CVL Ryujo
CV Kaga

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
2 x TBD Devastator launching torpedoes at 200 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then we "try" to strike back!

As in our last engagement the return strikes are not really impressing! Of course my strikes are splitted and the first wave gets nearly no escort. The result is a heavily beaten up strike! Though dozens of planes attack the Enterprise... The Vals can´t score and the Kates score one..... dud.... [8|]

This was the point where I already thought about a facing disaster...

Day Air attack on TF at 63,122

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 9
D3A Val x 39
B5N Kate x 47

Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 18
F4F-4 Wildcat x 67

B5N Kate: 30 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-3 Wildcat: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
F4F-4 Wildcat: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged

Allied Ships
CV Enterprise
CA Louisville

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet
1 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
2 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet
3 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet

4 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet
3 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 63,122

Fortunately the second strike gets more escorts! We manage to kill CAP fighters at a 1:1 ratio and buy our slow bombers some time to get to the carriers. This time the TF with the Hornet is attacked! Dozens of bombers attack the TF and are really splitting up between the ships... not good, not good... no hit, no hit, no hit... HIT... DAMN a dud torpedo on Hornet... [8|]

That was the point where I was sure it would be a disaster... [:D] Then the last 25% of the torp bombers try to engage the Hornet that was hit by a 250kg bomb that didn´t do any follow up damage. Flak was intense and the Kates had real problems. Then a hit!!! BOOM... though no further damage reported! Another hit! DUD!! DAMN!!! [:@] I´m considering buying a defibrilator for the next years of playing WITP! Only a couple of further Kate groups will go in at the carrier.... They must score now! Splash... miss... splash... BOOM, BOOM. Three hits so far, but the ship isn´t heavily burning... [X(] Then CL Durban is attacked again... hit... And the last two 4 plane Kate groups go in... and score a fourth hit on the Hornet... then the battle is over.

My Vals were nearly useless, the Kates score 8 torp hits with 3 being duds. 38% dud rate, so a little more than the 30% rate set. Though I have to say it is as it SHOULD be. Brian, I know you will reset it to 10% in your next version but I think it´s good as it is... [:D]

Range to Noumea is 10 hexes as well as the range to Auckland. Both are level 6 ports. I have a fleet HQ at Noumea. Hope to save all my carriers, if a) the biggest threat now, the subs, don´t score and b) if Helpless retreats (as he did last time). I´m moving two hexes North (on cruise)to get out of B17 range and to have my transport TF under the remaining CAP. When the US carriers will retreat I will order my carriers to go at full speed (two hexes [:D]) to get to Noumea within the next three days... Hopefully floatation will go down and the subs will be fought by more than 30 destroyers in the hex as well as ALL remaining bombers on the carriers...

not to forget that Hornet was hit by four torps (hopefully no FOW). The Yorktown was sunk with three torps in our first engagement so let´s hope the best! [&o]

The damaged IJN carriers! This isn´t looking good and it will need many months to repair the damage, do the coming upgrades and replace the losses of trained pilots. At least I haven´t lost that many Zero pilots, which are the most important IMO. Looks like my Australia invasion won´t happen... not possible without carrier cover. So it was at least a strategic victory for my opponent, even if he doesn´t know that... [:D]

Soon it will get hot in the Sian-Homan-area! Chinese troops (probably 150.000 - 200.000) are marching cross country and are coming from the South to break the cettle. Could need some wooden terrain, but it´s all clear terrain up there. I will bring in another 2000 assault points from the South as I don´t fear an attack there, so 1000 assault points in Wuhan and Nanchang should be enough behind level 9 forts. Nearly everything my opponent and I can field in China will then clash in this area. I won´t attack and this is my advantage at the moment as the attacker seems always having the bigger problems. The Chinese are welcome bleeding their troops again.[8D] When they break the cettle and drive my blocking troops at Sian out then those troops could soon become the ones who are trapped...

The bad news of the day: Dozens of Betties launch against the heavily damaged and spotted CV Hornet but they fail to find the target. No further attack was flown... [:(]

CV Akagi seems the only IJN CV that is in danger of sinking. She went from 29/36/25 to 31/44/8 this turn. Fires will probably be put out next turn and within the next two turns she will be disbanded at Noumea - hopefully.
