unfortunately, no! She was spotted in the morning and the Betties tried to attack her, but failed to locate the burning carrier. Then she was AGAIN spotted in the afternoon. So if she would have been sunk, she wouldn´t have been spotted in the afternoon I think. But you never really can be sure in WITP! [:D]

Were all your carriers in one cvtf?

Yes. In 90% of the cases I use one BIG CV TF as the Japanese (again, max 450 carrier planes due to the house rule). Never had real problems with that. It maximises the AA (though in that case with 6500+ AA it didn´t help anyway), attacks are spread out at a lot of ships (had at least 25 bombers going after the three Kongos in the TF), you don´t need so many escorts (which you don´t have anyway as IJN) and "normally" I don´t have problems with coordinating strikes. Only problem this time was that the first strike had the small escort and the second had the bigger. Though there were far too few escorts anyway. I think if I look at my strikes again, there were two coordinated strikes. Both big enough (in bomber numbers) to kill off one CV TF (with one CV in it each). Only problem were the low number of escorts, which was a result of 80% Cap.

Would I have split my CVs in three or four TFs then I bet I would have at least one carrier sunk (as I often still see a 100+ aircraft going after one TF instead of 50 after each of the four TFs ), though less damaged as I have experienced it before. Not nice to have many CVs damaged but if Hornet will sink then I prefer having a couple of CVs damaged and none sunk in comparison to one sunk and only few damaged. The reason for this is the fact that the time during my carriers are repaired is needed anyway for retraining the daitais.

I have seen splitted IJN carrier TFs too often reacting on their own, not following each other... which has led to more "disasters" than having them in ONE TF (same happened to me too often with Allied CVs also). So even if I play the Allied I usually go for more CVs in one TF then have them all splitted. Even if Helpless managed to get this huge strike he also has lost a carrier (perhaps[:D]). If all three carriers would have been in one TF he would have surely not lost one but probably damaged a couple of mine too. In stock strikes of 50 planes get shot to pieces though in this mod even smaller "not coordinated" strikes manage to get planes doing a bombing run so it´s not as severe as in stock to have smaller strikes. Though you could need some escorts, which you are short anyway with the 80 or 90% CAP settings we had.

Day Air attack on Taung Gyi , at 33,32

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 33

Allied aircraft
P-40C Tomahawk x 9
A-20B Boston x 15

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40C Tomahawk: 4 destroyed, 1 damaged
A-20B Boston: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged

Aircraft Attacking:
12 x A-20B Boston bombing at 9000 feet

moved 54 Zeroes into Taung Gyi and with 90% Cap 33 get in the air doing not that much damage. The aircraft symbol immediately attracted a bomber strike (as everytime before when I moved some recons in). Had to laugh, Helpless was again lucky as Dacca (main bomber base with 200 bombers) was clouded and it was reported that airstrikes out of Dacca were cancelled. This means for sure also the 200 bombers from Dacca were ordered to attack Taung Gyi (unescorted due to the range). Oh well... moved the Zeroes out again as I´m expecting a "super sweep" of P40s.

I really have to wonder if this game against Helpless is just off regarding die rolls or if something was damaged due to copying the mod files into the game! [:D] You may have noted that I´m "not happy" with a couple of things. It may be die rolls with just endlessly bad luck or whatever... Helpless has done 3 bombardments now with his sloooowly British BBs and he wasn´t spotted even once. At Andaman there are 27!!! [X(][:D][X(] search planes with a range 7 or 8 that are doing search 100%. Another 18 Emilies at Rangoon, and 20 Nells that are doing search. So that means this TF was three times at a range of 4 from Andaman but never spotted... Who? What? Where? Are you joking me? At Norfolk Island ther are perhaps a dozen F4s and they spot 100% of my TFs that are in the New Caledonia area. Note that Norfolk is 11 ranges away, not 4... [:o] There are 11 capitol ships in this TF and for sure a lot of escorts. So this TF is sitting four hexes away from a base with 27 search planes but isn´t spotted... and that happened now the third time. Means such a big TF sitting 9 times four hexes away from 27 search planes (being in range of 40 more search planes for dozens more turns) and I NEVER spot it?? [&:][&:][&:]

It just looks like if I´m facing stealth ships. Must be stealth as my search planes NEVER spot the biggest TFs on the map and my DDs never find subs (must be stealth subs...). Is there a way to manipulate detection levels???

This PBEM is so special there´s nothing like what we are discussing back and forth for years now on the forum. EVERYTHING seems to be upside down...

CV Hornet wasn´t reported sunk nor was it spotted this turn. My three subs were attacked 5 times this turn and one was hit by a 500 lb bomb. It should make it back to Noumea, the other two are making full speed runs away from Auckland as all bombers there seem to search for subs now.

Can this damn ship really survive 4 torps and two bomb hits? Being 6 days out before disbanding into port? The single torp on Akagi caused more than 30 floatation dam, so assuming each IJN torp would have done 20 floatation damage then Hornet would have had 80 floatation dam... If she really makes it than it was the biggest victory for the Allied so far. 4 CVs heavily damaged and 150 carrier planes destroyed (including IJN pilots) while having only one damaged US CV (the lost planes are irrelevant as well as the pilots as they are replaced without any problem)...

Hard weeks for the Empire and we´re only in May 42...

It looks like as CV Hornet is 100% safe now! [/color] What a disaster... 2 bomb hits and 4 torpedoes seem to be not enough to sink the ship... what about that?

I just got my computer back today after needing to get the mother board replaced )I also had some software problems). I am going to do some trial runs against the AI (haven't been able to play WitP for almost one year[:(]). I was seriously thinking about looking for a PBEM game using Big B's mod, but the more I read your AAR, the more I think I will go with CHS (or another mod using Andrew's extended map - never going back to stock maps).
Any reason to keep my hope alive concerning this mod?? [&:][&:]

Actually I think the mod is really working good!! I have used different mods in different version so far but the air combat here is so far the best I have seen as it is not as bloody as stock, you get planes through cap but it´s not like 90% of the attackers get through a heavy cap because it´s not possible to take them down. Of course the 4Es are a bigger problem, but with the coming version 1.4 Brian will have adjusted the replacement rates of the Libs also so there won´t be 150+ a month starting in June 42. And the situation in China will be again looked at, though as you can see, even with the masses of troops AND supply available, the Chinese commander can still make a "bad" decision [:D] and maneuver him in some nasty situations!

So far the things that "seem" to go wrong [:D] are not related to the mod I think. I don´t know why I need a 6 DD ASW TF to be a hundred times over a sub to damage or even sink one. I don´t know either why Japanese aircraft in Burma have problems, for what reason ever. 50 search planes don´t spot a 20 ship TF of Warships going in position, then bombarding, then going out. And this three times already... Why I can´t get more planes on CAP at Rangoon, no idea...

Oh yes, the Hornet didn´t sink with 2 bombs and 4 torpedo hits even though being out of the next base for 5 or 6 days. Why she isn´t attacked by the 108 Betties in range for those 5 or 6 days I don´t know also... [:D] You see, many things that don´t "work" I just don´t know why they don´t work... [8D]

On the other hand I have sunk the Yorktown with "only" three torps...

The situation I face on the ground is a result of my opponent´s tactic to retreat everywhere everything and than stack it in the best position (urban, high forts, wood...). If you face 2500 assault points in urban hex with 60.000 supplies and you try an attack after months of bombing but the defender still gets adjusted assault values of 10.000+ and is completely shredding one of your divisions with every time you attack, then it´s just like what I have now. 3 places where I need two or three times more troops to even achieve something than needed normally. I won´t attack Manila anymore, I have just 1500 assault points sitting there and my airforce is training against the base with 70.000 troops. Soerabaja will hopefully fall when I bring in the 1300 assault points from Mindanao, then I will have 3.000 aussault points (worth 7 divisions!!! [X(]) there. With the two divisions that will reinforce the attack on Mandalay I will then have 4.000 assault points there to even get to the base (if I will ever be able to...).

With version 1.31 I´m using for this PBEM I have to say I´m really pleased with it! And I have to thank Brian for the hard work and the fast info you get if needed! [&o] He is working on 1.4 which will be improved again in several aspects so I expect it to be very good. And BigB mod is also available with AB map, so there´s no need to play on the wrong stock map! The reason I decided to go with the stock map is just because I played three years on the stock map and am just tooooooo used to it! [;)]

TK Chilbar, attacked by a sub that was hunting CV Hornet sank today. Hornet not reported sunk. This means the only prize we get is a sunken TK for 3 IJN fleet carriers damaged and 150 pilots lost...

At Truk there are 3 CV and a CVE that will replace the damaged carriers, though we don´t have any trained pilots...

The IJN run out of trained pilots VERY quickly. I have just issued my last one from the pool and its only the middle of January in my game. Thats despite the number of trained pilots being doubled from 10 to 20 a month in this mod!

yes, that´s life! I barely can replace every second or third op loss. The months it will take to repair the carriers will be needed to retrain the pilots. Then I can use them again - once! [:D]

I sent in an ASW TF to (perhaps) attack the three spotted subs that are sitting at Koepang for weeks already. Bad idea it seems as the Allies don´t have the problem of their planes not launching at naval targets like I´m facing it. Immediately Hudsons show up and score a bomb hit.
Just as a reminder: 5 turns the Hornet in range of my Betties and not even a single plane attacked out of 108...

Allied forces launch a suicide attack! There´s only one thing sure in WITP! If you don´t have a 10:1 troop advantage then DON´T attack in an urban hex...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/12/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Homan , at 49,30

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 60
Ki-21 Sally x 173

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 5 damaged

Allied ground losses:
104 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Airbase hits 43
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 185

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 6000 feet

one Sally was shot down by flak, anoter 5 are lost to ops... I have to laugh about the thread about the Betty being fragile or not... On average I lose 5+ Sallies due to low risk attacks at minimum range against no fighter opposition with high exp. pilots in good weather, from a BIG airfield... And the Betty or Nell is nowhere as sturdy as the Sally... The Sally has only 5 points less durability than a B25C but it´s surely 10 times more effected by op losses. Wonder if there´s a special "boom" die roll for Japanese planes... The Allies have flown two times more sorties so far than the Japanese, against far better defended targets and I´m lucky that they have "nearly" as many op losses as the Japanese. This came due to high transport aircraft losses as Helpless is pushing them hard to evacuate troops all around the map.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Ichang , at 47,33

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 35

Allied aircraft
IL-4c x 17

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
IL-4c: 5 destroyed, 7 damaged

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x IL-4c bombing at 16000 feet

This time the fighters had a lot of time to engage the Chinese bombers and after every 4th bomber damaged there´s one shot down... 7 IL-4C are reported shot down A2A today...

Day Air attack on TF, near Diamond Harbor at 28,23

Japanese aircraft
G3M Nell x 3

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
AK Tantalus

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Wow, the torp bombers from Tavoy actually can fly... About half of the 81 Nells / Betties launch today against a cargo TF spotted at Diamond Harbour! Though not surprisingly a bad die roll prevented the bombers from finding the target... [8|] Then another 3 Nells find the TF but score... 0... Have reduced the range today as I bet Diamond Harbour will have Cap in the next turn...

hmmm... We have a house rule of bombers aren´t allowed to fly offensive missions (except naval attack) the turn you move them in. So I moved in 180 Sallies last turn and had them stood down this turn, planned an attack next turn. So the aircraft symbol at Rangoon turned from red into dark red last turn which immediately attracted a big bomber armada out of India. WHO STILL THINKS THOSE AIRCRAFT SYMBOLS ARE NOT AN ADVANTAGE FOR THE PLAYER WHO CAN SEE THEM BEFORE GIVING ORDERS (MEANS THE ALLIED PLAYER) MUST REALLY BE COMPLETELY NUTS....

With 90% Cap I get 84 Zeroes out of 135 in the air and I must be happy with that, as it´s more than I had expected. With every third attack on a 2E bomber a bomber is destroyed while it takes 5 or more attacks to take a 4E down. The Libs claimed 4 Zeroes shot down A2A, the Hudsons and Blens 1 each! All in all I lose 29 planes this turn with a dozen pilots lost. The Allied lost nearly 50 an the whole map. Good thing is that around 30 British pilots are lost too and it´s better they get lost now in an obsolete Blenheim instead of being highly experienced and ready to upgrade to a Lib in a couple of months. Overall this attack doesn´t look so bad for me, though I have to say I can already imagine how this will look like in 3 months when the Libs are available. Then only 25% of the bombers lost today would be lost and I would lose 100+ planes on the ground. While we implemented the house rule about the bombers on proposal of Helpless who wanted to give me an advantage (as he can see when I move my planes but I can´t), this seems a not so good idea for me later on as my opponent has now even more chances to destroy my bombers on the ground as they sit at the airfield instead of having the chance to fly a mission and the airfield being empty when the enemy bombers arrive...

I wonder why the British didn´t attack with Wellingtons as they are available and are bombing other places too. For me the Wellington III is the best 2E bomber the Allied get. It´s nearly as deadly as a Liberator.

The Allied forces at Manila decided to make another suicide attack. Looks like Japanese Banzai charges! [:D] Like I said before, you can be 100% sure that a force that isn´t 5-10 times as big as the defender has no chance to drive you out of an urban hex. I could even take one of the two remaining divisions out and the Allied could still not achive anything. I think those attacks are ordered because Helpless doesn´t like me using Manila as a big training ground for my airforce. Clark field is a level 7 af and is built up to 8 in two weeks. Then I will have 400 planes (including the KB aircrafts) there for training runs. So my opponent is trying to commit suicide with his troops until none are left as we have agreed on not bombing empty bases. While Manila has some ressources and 100+ HI I prefer having it as a target for my pilot training. I don´t have enough oil anyway to feed my existing HI so the HI of Manila wouldn´t help me. And probably it would all be destroyed, just like all the places where British troops surrendered were 100% destroyed!

there were 30+ Wirraways on Cap over Mandalay the last couple of turns so I decided to visit the base this turn! Helpless again anticipates my strike and I find the airfield empty and only 3 Wirraways on Cap that immediately attack the bombers and manage to damage a couple of them. I also ordered a sweep from another base (Tavoy)... had hoped to see it BEFORE the bombers. I don´t have luck with sending in sweeps! This could be very severe against a heavily capped base like Imphal. Recon shows around 110 enemy fighters in the air every turn. With the bombers that launch from Imphal and the max stacking of 200 planes at the level 4 base there, this means that Helpless seems absolutely having no problem of bringing up 100% of the fighters set to cap! Something I´m dreaming about...[8|]

still got a couple of the obsolete Wirraways as I moved 36 Oscars to Taung Gyi! Cap 90% means I get 67% of the planes into the air... I wonder why Wirraways are still used at the front as there´s surely no need to at this stage of the war.

This is the hex West of Mandalay! My assault value even get´s adjusted ABOVE the MAX assault value??? [X(] I achieve a 4:1 but not a single unit retreats! Really amazing how high those fort levels must have been (with only a couple of engineers present at this hex), when I achieved a couple of 3:1 and 2:1 odds already and now a 4:1.[8|] As Helpless told me after my 3:1 attack that it seemed the forts didn´t go down at all we started a little discussion on the forum which brought up that attacks outside of bases "SHOULD" bring down forts just like in bases though it isn´t displayed. I asked Helpless this turn if forts went down and I don´t know if I get this intel as he told me he´s not sure if he should tell me... [:D]

West of Mandalay... as I´m totally penalized by this bug that I can´t reduce forts outside of base hexes and those Allied troops probably have level 4 or 5 I will never be able to drive them out without suffering the complete wrecking of my troops doing that. I have now ordered all troops to follow a base force out to Pagan again (if the follow unit order works - one out of 10 times... ). Then they will shock attack over the river AGAIN and this time into Mandalay! This adventure of discovering this bug has cost me probably more than 25% of the combat effectiveness of my troops! And that is BEFORE I take Mandalay. You can imagine how those 8 divisions and brigades will look like after I have taken it... [:o]

F***ing BUGS!!!! If this bug wouldn´t occur I would have already taken Mandalay weeks ago... As it is now I have only wrecked division after division. And I have to say that the worst thing is that I was assured that taking down forts outside of base hexes WORKS and so I kept up attacking and even reinforced my troops. It´s really like I would do playtesting here... [:@][:@][:@] This three years after release. While I really apreciate the work the devs still put into the game while other games from other companies get no support at all, in other games you at least know what bugs you face within a couple of weeks. In WITP you have to face new bugs one after another again and again...

It´s frustrating that you raise an issue and most times it´s either called "minor" or you are even told everything is working just fine... though it isn´t...

in the combat replay ALL Allied inf units now have an assault value of 0-2 displayed! [:D] With the six divisions I had there I couldn´t take it after months of aerial bombing, now Manila has killed itself...
