Helpless (Allied) vs Castor Troy (Jpn) / BigB 1.3

RE: 5/26/42
Castor, I am playing Big B's mod v 1.2 against an opponent, and it's 5/23/42. After reading yours I feel better about my progress (or lack thereof). Yours is very good reading, love the rants, and your opponent looks tough.
I have also found the US Subs very effective. My opponent is pretty good with them, and I lost ALOT of ships in the DEI early, to both Dutch and US Subs. Plus, he got alot of hits with Martins and moved aircraft effectively, also scoring alot of hits. With this Mod, those Martins are more effective, and I think the Allies get more hits. (but the IJN will score hits later, rather than getting wiped out). I like the A2A model.
I cleared Java in early May, and Sing in late Jan. Hong Kong held out until late April! The PI fell in late March, though mostly because my opponent I think made a mistake there in spreading out defenders to 4 hexes, allowing me to defeat him piecemeal. Soerbaya was a tough nut, didn't fall until I had 3 divisions.
I grabbed PM early, but that cost me Noumea, as he was able to reinforce with Marines right before I got to the area. I was stopped on Fiji. I have just taken Derby though with about 6+ divisions, mostly from PI. A land campaign will now follow in Northern Oz.
What is your ship count? I have killed Enterprise, about 8 CA/CL's, maybe 20 DD's (mostly old ones). I have lost ALOT of transports, one CL, and a handfull of DDs. I've lost alot of subs, he is good at ASW.

>> The losses for a retreat aren´t really severe it seems. Had more than 1000 casualties in Rangoon from the air attacks...
When a unit retreats, it loses around 12-15% of its strength destroyed (not disabled) but that appears NOT on the combat report. Losses appering on the combat report are only those resulting from the exchange of fire during the battle, the retreat is not counted, so losses of the retreating side are usually far higher than those shown on the report (that are mainly disabled squads anyway). Only way to have an idea of the losses of the retreating side is to keep track of the troop points on the score screen.
When AC attack a ground unit, it is even worse (or maybe the same): one an unit is 100% disabled, air attacks will kill squads rather than disabled them, but the combat report will show no damage done...

thanks for the info! So long playing but I didn´t know that the destroyed items of a retreating unit aren´t shown! [8D]
At the moment it´s hard to tell with the points for troop losses as every day the Allied troop loss points go up around 10 points. Must be the Manila troops starving...

Well to me it looks like you are doing far better than me! [:D]
As said before I just can´t get through those three big stacks (Manila, Soerabaja, Mandalay) without bringing far more troops than normal. Assault value of 7+ divisions was not enough to take Manila after bombing it for months. The urban hex is a killer. Now I just bypass it. Same in Burma. Sent immediately two and a half divisions there but my opponent also immediately retreated into a swamp hex on the rail behind a river. No chance I could break through there, so I waited for reinforcements from Sing. Sing fell and half the troops went to Java (around 1700 assault value). My opponent didn´t defend any of Java´s territory and retreated all troops without a fight to Soerabaja. Wooden hex with level 8 forts when I arrived (probably all defending troops 100% prepped). No chance with 1700 assault points. Now I´m shifting in 1500 more and will crack it!
Mandalay will fall also as I´m having nearly 4000 assault points there now! Though the Liberators will appear in a week and then it´s mostly game over for my airforce. Hoping for the Tony and Tojo and wonder how they will perform (at least their guns can penetrate the 2 armor value).
PM is completely abandoned and I don´t intend to take it. It wouldn´t do me any good as it would be just bombed from the Aussie East coast like I bombed it from Lae. New Caledonia will become a fortress as it´s out of 4E range and he will need carriers to take it (perhaps he will bypass it - this is what I would do).
The Fidjis are an Allied fortress and no chance to attack it (even with KB). There are surely 400 aircraft there, lot´s of troops and ships. I won´t go any further in the Pacific, only last target could still be Northern Australia as I will have enough troops. This will all be a matter of the performance of the Tojo and Tony. If they can hurt 4Es then I will go for it, if they can´t do much better than the Zeroes then I won´t try it. I can´t even take the rest of Timor under the umbrella of the 100+ B17 from Darwin.
I have sunk the Yorktown and unfortunately the Hornet didn´t sink (despite 2 bomb and 4 torpedoe hits... what a die roll... [8|]). Though I was able to sink around a dozen CA, CLs from Helpless´suicide mission against the KB when I took New Caledonia. Still don´t know what he was up to. I think I lost around 50 ships so far, biggest was a CL to 150mm CD at Soerabaja and perhaps 3 DDs. Many ships damaged though. And of course KB was demolished... 4 CVs damaged nearly all pilots lost - for the damage of Hornet...
What I really find strange is the already uber effectivness of Allied DDs. He doesn´t put the same effort in ASW as I´m doing though it´s enough when a couple of DDs just stumbles over one of my subs and in most cases this means good bye for the sub... this in early 42... [8|] While my DDs do absolutely nothing! The big number of encounters shows that I´m putting a lot of effort in ASW but it just don´t pay off. All I get 95% of the time is DD not able to find sub. [:(] No matter if the sub is spotted for weeks in a base hex, it just can sit under two dozen of DDs and has nothing to fear. It even can pick of ships at will...
At the moment, the situation in the theatre that looked the worst from a Japanese view, China, is really looking good. When I really would be able to clear Homan and have 270.000 troops there surrender then China is in real trouble. And then I also don´t fear a counterattack in Burma, as we don´t have a HR about not using units outside of their dedicated command.
The next four months will show if we surrender in 44 or 46! [:D]
RE: 5/26/42
Good reply, and subs are a pain. I've sunk a few wounded transports, but for the most part, I lose a sub for about every kill. Allied subs, meanwhile, are almost immune. Even ASW TF's with a DD or two, APD's, etc, don't do much.
I've also had no hits on subs via aircraft, other than a Dutch sub that was on fire already. This despite setting 90-exp Sallys on 1000 ft. Naval Search at 80%, pretty much what you are supposed to do from reading the forum anyway.
The only saving grace is that I haven't had alot of Allied attacks lately, maybe because I am using big convoys, and changing the routes.

Means there are now ten Chinese divisions in Burma (actually this means the av of the Chinese in Burma is 3 or 4 times higher than those of the British! [:D]). With the 7 Chinese corps marching towards Hanoi we will soon be fighting for Indochina against the Chinese... [8|]

para attack... [8|] We did not face a base force but a Chinese division! A little more luck and we would have achieved the 66 adjusted assault value we needed... Luck? [:D]
Means there are now ten Chinese divisions in Burma (actually this means the av of the Chinese in Burma is 3 or 4 times higher than those of the British! [:D]). With the 7 Chinese corps marching towards Hanoi we will soon be fighting for Indochina against the Chinese... [8|]

the Allied get perfectly dispersed ground attack strikes it seems... better a lot of smaller strikes on different targets than one big strike. Will never be able to figure out why it doesn´t matter in most cases if there are 50 or 500 bombers that are attacking a ground target. So a couple of times 100+ casualties is better than one time 150 casualties...
Rangoon is still at 15.000 supplies and I am now shipping in supplies from Singapore. Great work you dumb supply "system"!! I have the Southern Area HQ there as well as an air fleet, 300 planes, 400 assault value and 100.000+ supplies lying around in bases where not a single unit is...just working fine... Same in China, I´m shipping supplies in and then find them again in Korea at a base with a single base force (wonder why a single base force in the middle of Korea needs 50.000 supplies [8|])... the "system" needs a lot of work...

now this combat is something to really RANT about!
I really was happy when the river crossing shock attack rule came with a patch. While it was a good thought, once again the developers didn´t think to the end but stopped in the middle... This is the hex East of Sian where I had an inf division for a long time. No Chinese present. When I saw Chinese units leaving Sian to the North, heading then East, I ordered more troops into the hex that already was mine! This turn both the two Chinese units AND my reinforcement division entered the hex. The Chinese overland and my division over the river! As we all know, this results in a shock attack causing my division to be butchered, it dropped from 99/100 to 88/99... Note the incredible high casualties for the Chinese when my division is still able to ge a 1:1... great, isn´t it? No more reinforcements...

ML Sokuten, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
I must be the king of hitting sub laid mines... Once again a ML hits a MK12 and immediately sinks (it´s the third already...)[8|]. Not that the sub would have hit one of my 4000 mines that already have been there... Nooooo, why should it?
It´s really funny that a dozen of sub laid mines are most times as dangerous as a 10.000+ minefield laid by dozens of MLs. Not knowing the code but in the world of probabilities and what we are seeing in the game the sub laid mines must be treated completely different to "other" mines... A dozen mines there, first the MSWs sweep and then the ML hits one... hahahaha.... If there are 10.000 mines and three MSWs begin to sweep them, the next turn you have 8000 left. When there are 12 mines and three MSWs sweep the next turn there are still 9 there of which three sink a ship... PROBABILITIES?? hahahaha I´ve seen so many invasions on and on going in against 5.000+ mines and all you get is an average of 3 cargoes damaged with one sunk perhaps... In so far I don´t have to care about the loss of my MLs as they only use up supply anyway!

I expect at least around 15.000 losses for my first deliberate attack against those 8000+ assault points. But I have to reduce the supply of the Chinese LCUs. If - and I say IF - it is true that a supply hit decreases the base supply by one percent (with dimishing effects) then Homan must have around 0! supplies as I´ve surely achieved 200 supply hits (I should really take notes). This turn alone had 10 supply hits... Not to talk about all the engineers that are repairing the airfield. And the damage is repaired by 30% every day (level 7 airfield)! [X(] Means the use of A LOT of supply. Should mean.... [;)] So on the other side there must still be A LOT supply on hand to do the repairs... So what isn´t right? That a supply hit kills one % of supplies or that engineers use supplies? [:D]

I waited for something like that happening already. My supply convoys must pass Amboina when they are coming from the SRA going to Truk. Now Amboina has a BG of Marauders sitting there with 11 Kittihawks on Cap this turn. We will order a sweep of 36 Zeroes next turn and 100 bombers have been flown in to Kendari to close Amboina. At Kendari I have stationed 160 fighters!!!!! to be more or less save from the B-17 from Darwin. Amboina wasn´t taken (like the rest of Timor) because the 4Es out of Darwin would butcher me. Amaoina has reported 8000 troops and a level 4 airfield.

The left flank on the SRA is a weak spot for the Allies to defend and many Japanese players do not use KB or mini-KB to cover their invasions and make this area a place for Nell/Betty to close down the shipping lanes. I believe that this area will be hard for you to take and provide a springboard for further invasions by him in the months to come.
Can you post a screenshot of this area??

If I want to take Amboina I have to do it under the cover of not just mini KB (this would just be a juicy target) but under the cover of my max. KB (means KB with 450 planes max). And even then I expect the 100 4Es (100 at the moment, 250 next month, 400 in two months, 550 in three months... [X(][X(]) that can be brought in in just a couple of turns, to make my life hell!
The problem is not just to take it, the bigger problem is that from the turn pon when I own it, it will be closed just like Koepang on Timor. I took it, placed two AA battaillons there, a couple of base forces, ground units and 90 fighters but there was not a single chance to defend the place at a range of 11 hexes to Darwin. [8|] That´s the reason I did not further attack Timor´s bases. Amboina is also easily in range of the 4Es from Darwin. Just look at Kendari! I need 160 fighters there to keep my opponent honest! Even then will he be able to close it easily with unescorted 4E bomber strikes if he wants to. He will lose 40-50 bombers but then Kendari is closed forever... [8|] Unfortunately do I have to say that I don´t know if the game will go on a long time if I face unescorted 150 4E bomber raids which I can´t defend myself against.
This is the first time I really have to surrender to the 4Es. They can´t nearly not be shot down, kill a lot of planes on the ground of course and have a range of 14 (B-24). In stock 150 4Es are coming in and 90 Tonies will take most times 60 down with many turned back perhaps (at least this is what I´m seeing when the raids are unescorted). In version 1.31 of Brian´s mod the 4Es have an armor value of 2 and therefore the fighters have a hard time. Again, it really looks realistic for me, though when I read that the 5 th ?? AF had most times only a dozen of 4Es ready for combat missions all through out the years until mid to late 44 then I will face a realistic durable 4E monster but at numbers that weren´t available until the end of the war. If there would be two dozen 4Es attacking me against 80 Zeroes on Cap the world would look different.
Of course this goes for the Japanese side also, as I could ramp up my Sally production to 500 if I wanted to spend the supplies and the HI points. But Sallies are shot down easily and have 1000 kg payload and a range of 8 compared to a B24 with 4000 kg payload, a range of 14 and an immunity against Japanese fighters.
Brian, I´m not blaming you and I know you adjusted the numbers for 1.4! [;)] We will see how my Tojo and Tony will perform and if I can take so many 4Es down that at least unescorted raids should be not freebee attacks anymore. If not then I will most probably surrender...
I´m now planning a landing in Norhtern Australia within the next three of four months when I will have enough Tojos and Tonies. It doesn´t matter to wait those couple of months longer as there won´t be more planes than there are now already (due to our stacking rule) and if there are more ground troops then I expect to just kill more of them as I don´t fear the ground troops as I will bring around 4000 assault points! If I succeed the game will go on, as there won´t be 4Es bombing right into the SRA (only bombing Burma [:D]), if I fail (which will probably the case [;)]) then it´s time to surrender, wait for 1.4 to be ready and start a new game with 1.4!
I will post a screeny of the Amboina area!

I feel your pain..
I get only 1 B-17 per day in CHS and have to wait until late '42 to get the B-24's.

Helpless only gets 20 A MONTH! Though he will get around 150 4E bombers (mostly Libs) from June 42 on...
And the starting B17s with the dozens that came as replacements so far prevented me from taking the rest of Timor and Amboina! [:D]- ny59giants

RE: 6/2/42
The most important thing the Allies need to do early in the war is evac the BF's from PI, Borneo, and Java to northern Australia for the much needed Avaition Support. Thus, the Japanese need to try to kill as many AK/AP's from those places to make only sub evac's feasible. The Allies can have a shortage of BF's if they are not careful.
I strongly considering not going for Pearl and instead go for Manila and/or Singapore the first game I play as the Japanese (waiting for Big B's next version). The lack of Aviation Support issue is difficult to overcome for the Allies.

unfortunately Helpless is pooring more troops to the hex North West of Homan. This is the hex I have to shock attack in although I originally "owned" this hex. Obviously the best hex for his troops to attack as I´m suffering for the bad design decision and will lose 10-15 % of the combat strenght crossing the river into "MY" hex... [8|]

Random observation, but you seem to be doing better on op losses or are you just not using your airforce as much?

I lose the usual 5+ planes every turn when I use my planes. Means mostly Sallies when I attack Homan. Only "safe" air attacks are training runs at one hex range. Everything that is further away than 1 hex is accumulating op losses. I just don´t point out the op losses anymore! Only if they are over ten... [;)]
All in all we are now pretty much equal on op losses (ca 530) with the Allied. Though normally the Allied are doing now more than twice as many sorties as me. The bombers that are attacking at long range (India to Burma and Darwin to Koepang...) aren´t really suffering even when they face the 100+ flak guns with my troops at Mandalay. Like against my Zeroes, the only bombers that are suffering are Blenheims. In a month there won´t be any Blens around anymore... [:D]
