RE: 6/10/42
Seems Helpless and me have just gotten into the discussion phase again. Half an hour of the acception of my surrender my opponent has sent me an email offering me to redo the turn with the P38s downgraded to other fighters as he missed this sentense in the design notes.
Should I go on with my rant PBEM? [:D]

I'll be your Allied opponent if you want.
However, I will miss reading your AAR and your rants.[:D]
Seriously?
You would then get my rants exclusively by email! [:D][:D]
As long as I get to 9am EST (I live within the American eastern time zone) to check my e-mails and get them before the whole world gets access to them. I'm fine with them (I am a Crisis Counselor for Children/Adolescents IRL and am use to dealing with rants). If the time comes to find an opponent, I'm game.

Personally - I think you would both be better off to have a rematch with 1.4 in a couple of days.
Most of the things that bothered you most have been addressed, and the air model looks (I think) much better...not to saying it's less "bloody", but Nate's and Oscar I's are very much worth while now, etc.
Also China will be far less capable of offensive action, and the Philippine Army will be less effective overall...
I'd say - cool off a few days and do a re-match.

Sounds good! Right now, Helpless and I am in the discussion phase![:D] Seems he didn´t take my surrender really seriously. Though with P38 at this date achieving kill rates against my best fighters of 12:1 then I really was serious with my surrender. It´s severe enough to face hundreds of those tough 4Es with P38s from October on. Looks like Helpless is wanting to redo the turn.

It would probably be the best choice to start off with 1.4 though I´m not a real fan of rematches without changing sides nor do I know if Helpless wants to. So for the moment it looks like we will redo the turn and the P38s are moved to the West Coast again. Actually I thought they wouldn´t do THAT good but losing 50 of my best Zeroes for the loss of only 4 Lightnings was too much for me to accept. If Helpless wants to he can close Rangoon anyway, with unescorted bombers only. [:D]
As said before, I really think that 1.31 works very good! The fighter vs fighter works very good and also fighter vs. bomber looks good. Of course there are too many 4Es in the next months, so I don´t know if my surrender is just postponed, but the A2A really is fine! That 50 Zeroes shouldn´t be able to take down 50 out of 75 attacking 4Es is good, not like in stock, the only problem is the 4E replacement rate starting now in June (which you have changed already in 1.4). Many things that frustrate me are not related to your mod, your mod is making me feel better, not more frustrated.
Perhaps you should ask Helpless if he wants to play with the real replacement numbers you had "in mind" and it was only a typo that he gets 150 4Es a month starting in 6/42. All of them with an armor rating of 2! Or keeping the number but reducing all the armor ratings of 2 back to 1 again! [;)]

Like we are doing turns, we are also doing our discussions fast! Intense, but fast! [:D] So this is like another time anomaly as we have redone the last turn, with P38s transferred back to the West coast (by upgrading fighter squadrons there). Means we can at least take Burma before P38s will arrive in India. The 4Es alone will be tough enough... So the Japanese surrender, while ment serious, was an error!
So if you don´t mind, the rant will go on for some indefinite time. [;)]

The supply level at Rangoon is still at 11.000. No wonder that not more is brought in as the needed supply is just over 5.000. So this seems to be the problem and I don´t know why the needed supply is so low when I´m placing the most important HQ there and 200 fighters. In China I have bases with needed supply of 24.000 but only a minor HQ, a couple of base forces and 80 fighters there. I don´t understand it... I´m now moving the Southern Area HQ out!!! Going to Mandalay to support the attack on Myitkina. Perhaps supply needs at Rangoon go up then. If not, them I´m screwed as even if I bring in supplies, they are transferred out immediately... This game is really a complete up and down and I wonder more and more if my opponent and I are talking about different things or if it´s just the language barrier of two non native English speakers. [8|] I wanted to quit the game as P38s show up in India in June while they should stay on the West coast. I see them killing 50 high exp Zeroes for a loss of 4 Lightnings. [:o] So I surrender... Then Helpless tells me he wanted to redo the turn, with the P38s sent to the West coast immediately. Now, two turns later 36 P38s sweep an airfield in Burma! [:(] Is this a bad joke or what? The longer I play I really wonder if it´s worth to invest all the time in this PBEM. With discussions on and on about house rules we agreed at start, about me doing "gamey" attacks, me replying about the super tactic of stacking all troops on all fronts in one base, giving up all territory without A SINGLE figth (and then I´m just told this is perfectly historic).
We are now in June 42 and I´ve got not a single chance so far to achieve the historical conquers because on the four fronts so far I had to fight at ONE base against all the available troops in the region. 4000 assault points at Manila (not enough after three months of daily bombing with 150 Sallies). In Burma, more than 4000 assault points fighting in a wooden hex against forts that can´t be reduced. In Java no chance with nearly 2000 assault points because all troops on Java are immediately sent to Soerabaja to build forts in the wooden hex. If it´s historic to move everything to Soerabaja without a single fight then I also want to see the historic case of being completely out of supply without receiving any for five months. Not to talk about the 20.000+ Chinese assault points that were on the move in China.
I can´t take the rest of Timor due to the 100 4Es in Darwin, I can´t take Amboina due to the same reason. I have 60% of my Navy fighters in Rangoon and after one unescorted attack everthing is destroyed, I have 30% of my Navy fighters in Kendari and after one attack everything is destroyed. The 10% rest of the available Navy fighters sits in the Pacific. What I´m experiencing atthe moment is a situation I don´t even face in late 43 in my other games as there I´m not completely on the receiving end. Not to talk about the fact what I´m doing with unescorted strikes... I must have been making a lot of bad mistakes in this PBEM...

I have 160+ fighters at Kendari. 78 decide to go up (Cap 90% 15.000 ft)
. I´m not as lucky as the Chinese and the bombers that are ordered to attack Amboina don´t fly and get destroyed on the ground. The attacking bombers aren´t suffering at all IMO. Many Zeroes are destroyed. Looking at the base there are so few operational aircraft that 100% must have been destroyed or damaged with this attack (a couple of them are repaired after the replay). The bomber units there have all around 3-5 planes undamaged. Same goes for the Zeroes. We have 350 air support at the base. Several AA regiments. The base isn´t operational for offensive actions anymore with an airfield damage of 78 and an airbase damage of 43! And this after one unescorted long range strike of 13 hexes against the second best defended Japanese base on the map. [8|]

3800 casualties at Mandalay! There are 8 AA regiments and 5 IJA base forces. They are all around 30% disabled now... [8|] After one attack... The Allied bombers lose the whopping number of 3!!!!! to flak today... My opponent doesn´t need B29s, the bombers in mid 42 do the job just perfect. And not to forget that the 90 Wellington III weren´t in the air today...

I just checked the supply levels on Java! My three attacks so far have used more than 35.000 supplies!!! [X(][X(][X(] I´m shocked at the moment. Looks like I hit the bad luck side of the die again. I-27 fires 6 torps at CA San Francisco and all torps miss. Perhaps I should look at everything from the other side! Hey man, I´m a lucky guy, my sub wasn´t sunk!
Two torps into San Francisco would have been worth losing the sub though. Would love to have some statistics in the game. Following my feeling then 75% of all shots at warships were misses so far. At least now I know why my subs in this area are spotted by Dauntless all the time. This is a hunter killer group with the Long Island in it. What a pity I don´t have some carriers in the area. The TF is in range of my 108 Betties at Noumea though, never seen an attack so far... Of course I won´t see any transports in this area as they surely take a complete different route.
The lucky San Francisco: Is this camouflage on the belt or does she just need some new paint?

This is the attack I feared for days already. Looks like it was a good decision to move in my tanks and two further divisions. My troops arrived just a few turns ago. I really have to wonder why this attack wasn´t order far earlier! I lost 17 points in Japanese ground losses, the Allied around 30 but they lose around 15 every day (probably from the Manila starving). So the points for destroyed ground troops here must have been pretty equal.
What I just can´t understand is the fact that my 4 HQs all have suffered more than 30% of losses... [8|] Why on earth are always the HQs the units that take the majority of the losses for a defender? I know that always the first units in your stack are hit the most but does this make sense to ANYONE here on the forum (including developers!). I don´t want to rant, I just want to "understand" what people thought when designing something like that.
Can someone explain me why an Army with nearly 200.000 troops suffers 90% of the casualties from such a fight in it´s HQ units. Sorry, this is just wrong...[:-] When I look at all my inf units at Sian, then none of them suffered more than 3% of disablements... [8|] But the four HQs in the lead are shredded, another attack and they are far below 50% disablements and I have to withdraw them if I don´t want to have them completely destroyed. As this only always happens to the defender, it would be better not to have HQs in a hex to minimize losses. Of course then you are hit by some mysterious die roll that completely cuts down your adjusted assault value.
I just don´t get it why HQ units suffer the most, I bet the designer can´t explain it himself... [8|]

Oops! Another "miss spotting"! An Emily spotted AKs at Nukufetau so I sent in a sub at full speed which gets attacked by two ASW ships... Tomorrow two IJN CAs and four DDs will join the party. Hopefully the TF is still at the base then.

Nukufetau Island was obviously only used as a patrol plane base. Replay went into some loop during the attack on MSW Penguin as it was hit by 17 8inch shells and 3!! torps.. Pretty overkill... DD Whipple was the first target of the CAs and was sunk quickly at a range of 6000.
USS Tangier was sunk in a night battle:

USS Tangier (AV-8), 1941-1961
USS Tangier, first of a class of three 11,760-ton seaplane tenders, was launched at Oakland, California, in 1939 as the merchant ship Sea Arrow. Taken over by the Navy in 1940, she remained at her builders' for conversion work and went into full commission in August 1941. Tangier went to Pearl Harbor in November and was employed supporting the expanded force of patrol seaplanes based there during a time of increasing tensions with Japan. She was present during the 7 December 1941 air raid on Pearl Harbor and was slightly damaged when a Japanese bomb exploded nearby.
About a week later, Tangier was sent toward Wake Island with supplies for its Marine garrison, but was recalled when Wake was captured by Japanese forces on 23 December. In February 1942, the tender steamed to the south Pacific, where she stayed until June, maintaining seaplane patrols out of Noumea, New Caledonia. Her planes played a supporting role in the May 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea.
Following a west coast overhaul, Tangier again was based in the south Pacific in February-August 1943, then served on transport duty between the war zone and the United States. From March 1944 until June 1945, the ship's base moved steadily forward from Australia to the Philippines as her seaplanes assisted the Seventh Fleet and General MacArthur's forces during their advance across New Guinea and northwards.
Tangier was receiving the attentions of a stateside shipyard when the Pacific War ended in August 1945, but was sent back to the Far East to support occupation efforts from October 1945 into March 1946. She then made the long trip back to the U.S., passing through the Panama Canal and arriving at Norfolk, Virginia, in late April. The next month, she began deactivation at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tangier decommissioned there in February 1947 and remained in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet until 1961. In November of that year, she was sold for scrapping.

One Blenheim was lost due to ops today. Only Allied bomber loss. 5 AA regiments and 4 base forces manage to damage 3 attacking bombers while suffering 600+ casualties. [8|] Not bombers have to fear AA but AA has to fear bombers in this game. The best decision of Matrix was to call WITP a game, not a simulation! [:D]
In comparison I lost 5 out of 48 high exp Oscars flying LRCAP to Sian (range 4) to intercept Chinese bombers. Not surprisingly, exactly this turn the base of the bombers was clouded and they didn´t fly so we lost 5 Oscars for nothing (including 3 pilots). A 80 exp. IJA pilot is either a flying idiot or the IJA planes were comparable to the early models of the brothers Wright!
While knowing that Op losses happened alot I wonder if it really was normal to lose 10%+ of the planes that were launched when not even facing enemy fighters nor flak... LRCAP must be some VERY dangerous mission... [:o]
Moved the Southern area HQ into Mandalay, supply is at 8000! [:D] No reason to complain, as the needed supply there is only 3000....[:D]

soooo.... Doesn´t the manual say that ground attacks target the unit with the highest assault value? ALL my bombers that took off for ground attack (never as many as on airfield attack launch) attack A HQ UNIT!
This is the hex where I have to shock attack into (the one I originally owned..). There are six units! 1 HQ, 1 tank regiment, 5 divisions. So ALL the attacking bombers decide to attack the HQ unit with an assault value of 0! [8|] Only the Allied bombers have the privileg to disperse and attack more than one unit and disrupting them all. My bombers focus on ONE unit and to make it completely laughable they focus on a target without any combat troops! Perhaps we should compare the losses. The 100 Allied bombers cause 600+ casualties at Mandalay, the 180 IJA bombers cause 180 casualties with this attack. Whopping one casualty (disabled) for an attacking bomber. I don´t face any flak fire and lose 6 Sallies to ops (there is no daitai with exp below 75, in fact there are mostly 85+ exp daitais). The 100 Allied bombers lose 1 bomber to ops attacking a target with 5 AA regiments and 4 base forces...

RE: 6/18/42
A lot of the process done by the AI involves the unit ID number. For LCU's, the HQ units have a lower ID and thus are subjects to attacks first (land and by air). When it comes to naval units, the lower numbers are looked at first when it comes to expending shipyard repair points. Thus, CV's are 1st, BB's are 2nd, etc. I would imagine it is a software thing. [&:][&:]
On the question of mines inflicting damage, there was a thread some time ago that explained the differences that each type have. I just had a DD hit a mine early in the game in a shallow hex next to Jolo and sunk with 1 hit.[:(][:(]
I had SS Shark launch 4 torpedo attacks against an AK off the north coast of Luzon and none exploded. [:@][:@] However, my opponent is not happy with my sub and PT Boat success so far in 12/41. [:D][:D]

That explains why HQs are attacked first but it still doesn´t make any sense to me that the units that usually take the lowest damage in real life take the highest damage in the game. [:-] Perhaps it makes sense to someone else, for me (RonS club member) it doesn´t make ANY sense at all. If the ground combat is so bad designed that units with the lowest ID in the database take the most damage then I´m not surprised anymore that it works so bad...
For sure: a HQ unit should not be the unit that should take the most damage when you are attacked by your enemy!!!

Forgot the name of the sub but IIRC one US sub fired off its whole load of torps at a big factory ship acheiving numerous hits but all torps were duds. Just to spice up things a little I think one was a circular run to boot.

RE: 6/18/42
In an abstract sort of way it does. Maybe not as much if you look at combat in the WW2 way, but look at how the USA took out Iraq twice. The mission of the LBA's and then the LCU's was to take out the Command and Control of the military. Without effective leadership, your combat units are less effective. In WitP that is reflected in the amount of support your units need to function well and that comes mainly from HQ's. If the HQ's are weakened, then your combat strenght is also weakened.
If the top few LCU's got hit then only those units would be weakened and not the whole stack of units. Then everyone would break down there top few infantry units to Brigades/Regiments and only one division would be knocked out of combat. With the HQ's taking the hit, the whole stack is weakeneed (less support).
I'm not saying I support this way to resolve combat, but this is the way I see it being done.
FYI - I made my 1001 post on your AAR and earned my "Matrix Legion of Merit" with you. [:D]

I'm not saying I support this way to resolve combat, but this is the way I see it being done.

I'm not saying I support this way to resolve combat, but this is the way I see it being done.

congrats on your 1000th post! [:D]
So far I have seen far more effect if the inf units are disrupted instead of going after the HQs. One bomber attack on an LCU and it is 50% disrupted easily. Means if I could get my 200 bombers to attack 3 different Chinese LCUs in this hex (out of 6 combat units) and they drop by 50% combat strength then I could drive them out. Though if my bombers attack the HQ I don´t think I will be able to drive them out.

I reread the manual about reducing of forts. The only way to reduce fort levels by more than one with your attack you have to SHOCK ATTACK. With a shock attack I would have reduced the forts by 4 this turn (one with my eng and 3 for the odds over 1:1). Of course if you are lucky also your engineers can reduce multiple fort levels in one turn. BB bombardment going in next turn and I also have ordered a shock attack. Want to see Soerabaja falling next turn. Far too late anyway! Tough nut, never needed the equivalent of 9 Japanese divisions to take Java. Seems the only possible way to bring so many troops when you face all your enemies in one hex right from the start. Lesson learnt...
Looking at what happened so far I really can say that the "stack everything into one hex tacitc" worked perfectly. Though this tactic only works if you face a "dumb" player like me who never experienced such a tactic. It´s probable that I will start PBEMs in the future and if I would face the same tactic again then my opponent will be screwed pretty fast. Manila? I would place 1500 assault points (instead of 4000) there and let the Allied rot. Never order an attack, if an Allied attack comes then they will just be bleeded in the urban hex. No chance in the urban hex! So it will be bypassed and bombed by training units. The freed troops will go to Java, the more than 4000 points there will take Java easily then (like it is now). Not needed troops would go to Burma also which makes Burma fall far earlier than now. Then the troops from Java would land in Northern Australia.
All I can say is, if your opponent stacks everything in one place without trying to fight for the area he has to defend then either just block and bypass it (like the urban hex Manila) or come in brute force and the Allied stack will fall soon (like Java and Burma in my game). Just don´t hesitate to bring twice as many troops as you are used to. Take Burma, or Java, and then bring brute force to the next area. Against super stacking the "normal" numbers used in the game, not to talk about historical numbers, are not worth a try and all you get is shredded divisions like I´m having them.

Helpless has received more than 100 4Es this month already. This means I will have Rangoon, Mandalay and for sure also Kendari closed soon. In India alone are 4 US bomber groups that will use 4Es only for sure. From Dacca the B24 can reach down to Hanoi, Bangkok... can´t place everywhere 250 fighters. Despite heavily researching the Tojo (234 rd) and the Tony (138 rd) none of the planes has moved a month. Still scheduled for 8/42 so the time from beginning of July until mid August will be a problem. We will then see if those fighters are dangerous enough to make at least unescorted Allied 4E strikes too costly. If not... then good bye...

For the moment the situation in the Sian-Homan-area looks good. As the Chinese weren´t able to drive me out of Sian I have a pretty solid defense around Homan. Will be hard for the Chinese to break through and hopefully some time the supply will be ending at Homan (IMO after all those attacks the Chinese should already be starving, but their numbers and assault value still goes up).
