Hi Castor.  How do you change the save game file of a game in progress?

You are exactly right about the armor value and the effect on planes.  Actually, the armor in v1.3 of Big B is up across the board on most planes and this even results in substantially less damages it appears to planes (I am running a parallel head to head game on my computer and just experimenting turn to turn with various things).  I am wondering whether the routine says "did I hit?", "check versus armor?", "check versus durability - damage or kill...".

I am also not sure what the rates of ops losses are predicated on - they seem awfully low for the Allies.  Going to be doing some testing on that too.

I don´t know how you change an ongoing game - in fact I don´t even want to know it. And I don´t think it is good to explain it on the forum as this would make cheating in a grand scale possible. Though my opponent knows how to do it. Think it has something to do with the decoder.

I think escpecially op losses are more related to durability of the planes, but I agree, the Allied bombers nearly suffer no op losses in my game also.

The Sally, a flying death trap when following WITP. 5 Sallies are again lost to ops. Attack range 3, no opposition, blah blah blah... I´m already tired of telling, the Allied bombers lost 1 today... well, better than 0... [8|]

300.000 troops at Homan and 169 medium bombers cause 127 casualties. Not to compare with the 2000 casualties caused by the Allied bombers every turn. I´m already at a point where I just shouldn´t think about planes lost. Lose 100, don´t care and bring in another 100. Ramp up production so you produce three times more planes than the US and make the Allied cry about that. This seems to be the way to go in this game. In stock this begins later, in this mod earlier (because the A2A works better - but causes more problems [:D]).

Homan will stay under "constant" (for Japanese proportions) air attacks. This base is the number one target on the map at the moment. If we can ever kill those 300.000 troops off then we are in a very good position. If not, then China will stay a stalemate for a loooong time. I already fear seeing 4Es in China, which will bomb my industry in China, Formosa and Korea to dust. [8|] Could need some 5000 IJA fighters more...

Helpless moves his planes in China around every turn. This time we guessed right and we torch 10 SB-2c on the ground. The Allied lose 11 bombers this turn, so with the 10 obsolete Chinese bombers destroyed on the ground, there´s the Blenheim IV left that was lost to flak today. So in fact the Allied lost again 1 bomber [8|] out of 200 [8|][8|] to flak and none to ops due to their looong range attacks. On the other side we AGAIN lost 3 Sallies and one Helen to ops today. Another Sally shot down by Chinese flak... [>:]

only training runs today, my Sallies didn´t launch a strike. Means no Sallies lost to ops today. But even better, I moved a Zero daitai from Singapore to Soerabaja. You need to post a picture of FB-111 "wild weasels" along with your B-52's as they seem to be jamming your radar and making your CAP miss their targets. [:D][:D]

USS Ralph Talbot (DD-390), 1937-1948
USS Ralph Talbot, a 1500-ton Bagley class destroyer built at the Boston Navy Yard, was commissioned in October 1937. For the next four years she served with the Battle Force, mainly in the Pacific. Based at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after mid-1941, she was moored there when the Japanese attacked on 7 December 1941 and was able to get to sea before the raid was finished. Ralph Talbot spent the next few months operating with carrier task forces, participating in some of the early raids on Japanese bases in the central Pacific.

After serving as an escort for shipping in the west coast and Hawaii areas, in June 1942 Ralph Talbot steamed to the south Pacific. She took part in the Guadalcanal-Tulagi operation in early August and in the Battle of Savo Island on the 9th of that month. She was seriously damaged by gunfire in that action, losing twelve of her crew, and necessitating a return to the U.S. for repairs.

Ralph Talbot's next combat operations were in the central Solomons, where she participated in the Rendova-New Georgia invasion and the Battle of Kolombangara in July 1943. Later in the year, the destroyer supported landings in New Britain and in the first month of 1944 performed similar duties off New Guinea. She was assigned to the central Pacific in mid-1944, where her guns bombarded the enemy on Saipan and Tinian in July. From late August, Ralph Talbot escorted Task Force 38's aircraft carriers during strikes on the Volcano and Bonin Islands, the Palaus, Okinawa, Formosa and the Philippines. In this role, she took part in the action off Cape Engaño during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 25 October 1944.

In January-June 1945, Ralph Talbot took part in operations to capture northern Luzon, Iwo Jima and the Ryukyus. She was hit by a "Kamikaze" suicide attack off Okinawa on 27 April but was repaired locally and remained on duty in the central and western Pacific until the end of the Pacific War. At the beginning of September 1945, the destroyer was present when Japanese forces on Truk surrendered.

Following service supporting the occupation of Japan, Ralph Talbot returned to the United States in November 1945. The following spring the now-elderly ship was designated as a target in the upcoming atomic bomb tests at Bikini, in the Marshall Islands. She was contaminated by radioactivity after the two July 1946 nuclear explosions and was decommissioned a month later. USS Ralph Talbot was scuttled in deep water off Kwajalain on 8 March 1948.

USS Ralph Talbot was named in honor of U.S. Marine Corps aviator Second Lieutenant Ralph Talbot (1897-1918), who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in aerial action over France and Belgium in October 1918 and died in a plane crash later in that month.

Liberators coming in to attack the shipping in port. Glad only half a dozen. They take two IJA fighters down but all get shot down in return. 264 fighters at Rangoon set to 90% cap and we see not even 50% in the air... [8|] One strike and we say good bye. The biggest problem is the fact that the Allied launch always three attacks from three different bases. So this would mean the first raid would meet the "full" cap but would damage most of the fighters, so wave two and three would go in completely unopposed, thus leading to the loss of perhaps 200 planes at Rangoon... [:(] Only 6 Liberators damage or destroy 10% of the cap that scrambles. The "funny" thing is that there must be a die roll on how many planes are on cap today. Let´s say 50% today, while the other 50% stay on the ground undamaged. When the 50% that scrambles against the first wave are all damaged, then there is no cap at all anymore!!! IMO there should be that die roll for EVERY wave, not just for the first, as there is no reason why the undamaged planes that didn´t scramble against the first wave don´t scramble against the next waves also but get torched on the ground.

AND I JUST WONDER WHY??? WHY IS THE UNDAMAGED REST STILL GROUNDED????? So many things that make just no sense at all. A friend of mine is a SQL programmer and I always wonder if he has some common sense left the longer he works in his job as it seems to get fewer and fewer. Must be a normal programmer disease....

You need to post a picture of FB-111 "wild weasels" along with your B-52's as they seem to be jamming your radar and making your CAP miss their targets. [:D][:D]

2 base forces at Taung Gyi. So this is just another good example of the excellent work that was put into the product. The more support units you have at a base the higher get your casualties - because your troops are put one on another so that even 50 bombers can cause 1000-2000 casualties to your AA units. Though it doesn´t matter how many AA units you put into a base, the casualties of bombers won´t go up because Japanese AA was just a booh booh...

MANY flak guns at Mandalay results in MANY losses (for the AA units ) but they only damage laughable TWO bombers. Two base forces at Taung Gyi results in FEW losses (for the AA units) AND they also manage TWO bombers damaged.

Really a GOOOOOD work Mr. programmer... [8|]

I would ask your opponent to try something for his next bombing using heavy bombers. Have him stagger his altitude by 2000 feet from 6,000 to up over 15,000 to see if you need a HR about it. I seem to remember that your flak doesn't work at 6,000 or below. [&:]

Helpless has varied his altitude all the time in the past and we are aware of the "flak gap" but the difference was just minor. The best thing I can do is just to not place any support units at a base he attacks. This is just BS but that´s how the game is designed... [8|] Half of the support units means half of the losses, no matter how many bombers attack.

I just don´t want to ask about another house rule. He seems to be okay with the results so be it. What I´m thinking about those every day nukes from above is obvious from what I have written I think. So it comes down to the product that is present and to the people who use it. At the moment I face a IMO "very strange" situation. But it seems this won´t change for the rest of our campaign.[8|]

this turn shows that the modelling of flak is - also - complete BS. Sorry, there is no other word I could use. Mr. Grigsby or whoever is responsible for it, he would probably be better off programming some kind of World of Warcraft game, where the boom chackas fight against some Aliens.

There are three Chinese base forces at Sian (I can see them during the ground combat phase) and those three base forces are accounted for 5 Sallies with another Sally lost to ops. Compare that to the two dozen+ base forces (including 10 or more heavy AA regiments) that I place at bases like Mandaly or Taung Gyi. I normally damage some 3 Allied bombers out of 100+. Why the hell should 3 base forces be 10 times more effective than two dozen Japanese base forces. That´s just crap...

Excellent work. No doubt, this is perfectly modelled and 100% realistic... The reason I (and probably many of the people that bought this game) are playing it on and on is the fact that it is unique and there is no alternative. Give me a somewhere more realistic game (or sim ) about this theme and WITP is swept off my hard drive within a minute. It´s just fantasy...[8|]

The more I think of it the more I´m sure it would be better to get away from bug busting and use some time to make the different "models" just slightly more realistic. Perhaps people should take a book, read it and then work on the coding. It appears that at the beginning the programmer watched Star Trek and then worked on the game. While I know that the reworked ASW routine was programmed for War plane orange, WITP could need some time to "fix" some of the other routines.

I´m not saying that 3 Chinese base forces should not be able to take 5 bombers down. But what I´m pretty sure about is the fact that two dozen IJA base forces and AA regiments could do remarkably more damage. They DON´T....

500+ hits on the airfield in two days, this day Tonies flew LRCAP. Dakota I intercepted, not a single lost to fighters or ops... [8|] Wonder why transports are immune when landing at a 100% damaged airfield... no that´s not an oversight. And it´s not like they are dropping supplies by parachute. It´s no problem to pick up troops from a 100% damaged airfield either.

ASW attack at 85,127

Japanese Ships
SS I-9, hits 3

Allied Ships
DD Stewart
DD Parrott
DD Russell
DD Smith
DD Cummings

I-9 is lucky today, we tried to pursue the earlier attacked TF. There are actually two TFs, both have reported 8 ships, including AKs. To me it looks more like two ASW TFs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 85,127

Japanese Ships
SS I-9, hits 3

Allied Ships
DD Kennison, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Van Ghent
DD Scout
DD Rathburne
DD Lawrence
DD Humphreys
DD Voyager

I-9 attacks the second TF and seems to be extremely lucky again. No transport sighted. Shouldn´t be an ASW TF either as we have a house rule of not more than 6 ships in an ASW TF and I count 7 DDs in this TF. Kennison is heavily damaged, as was DD Ralph Talbot earlier. Though I haven´t received ans message about a DD sinking. I-9 is heading back to port with 16 sys and 3 float.

DD-138 Kennison
Kennison (DD-138) was launched 8 June 1918 by the Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, Calif., sponsored by Miss Elizabeth Riner; and commissioned 2 April 1919 Comdr. R. P. Enrich in command.

Following completion, shakedown, and acceptance trials Kennison arrived San Diego, her home port, 23 March 1920. During the summer she engaged in experimental torpedo and antiaircraft exercises. The destroyer continued coastal operations and tactical exercises until 12 August 1921 when she put into San Diego with 50 percent complement. She decommissioned at San Diego 22 June 1922.

Recommissioned 18 December 1939, Lt. W. G. Michelet in command, Kennison joined the Neutrality Patrol out of San Diego 6 May 1940. From June to September she engaged in reserve training cruises before rejoining the Neutrality Patrol 14 October. The destroyer continued patrol operations along the West Coast until the United States entered World War II. As the war effort increased in early 1942, Kennison intensified her ASW operations including escort of convoys and submarines to various California ports until 22 September 1944 when she sailed for Bremerton to undergo conversion.

Redesignated AG-83, Kennison returned to San Diego 9 November 1944 to resume service. For the rest of the war she operated out of San Diego as a target ship for plane exercises with aerial torpedoes. These exercises provided invaluable training to Navy pilots preparing for combat. Following the war Kennison sailed for the East Coast, arriving Norfolk late October. She decommissioned 21 November 1945 at Portsmouth, Va. She was sold 18 November 1946 to Luria Bros. & ,Co., Inc., Philadelphia, Pa., and scrapped.

A LOT of ships in the South Pacific now. On the way back to it´s homeport the unluck I-6 stumbles over a heavily escorted troop transport task force. Those DDs have an ASW value of 8 and dozens of DCs are dropped. The sub is a goner. Damage is 43/82/0. Wonder why it isn´t rated as heavily damaged. Perhaps heavily damaged means only a high sys damage?

We are flying LRCAP again. Ordered 108 Tojos on LRCAP 3 hexes. A sweep to Taung Gyi with Buffalos. Buffalos vs. Tojos is the same as if I would send Nates against P40s. After 6 shot down the rest pulled back.

Only god knows what the programmers were thinking when I see the same flak that is 99% ineffective in a base is suddenly nearly a killer when it´s outside a base… I don´t like both things to be honest. If there should be a difference then flak should be far more effective in a base in it´s compartments, not outside a base travelling around. Well, the developers “surely” had a reason to do it that way. I can´t follow it… This is the complete ineffective flak that left Mandalay which is now damaging/killing 36 out of 45 planes... [8|][8|][8|]

I just can´t understand it....

moved some troops into Changsha to stop the supply production. Looks like those brigades are in trouble though. Perhaps they can withstand a deliberate attack, though they will be probably kicked out with a shock attack. With 15.000 assault points in the Sian-Homan-area I was surprised to see nearly 4000 still at Changsha...
