AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/11/42

I'm beginning to see a lot more naval activity in the DEI. My actual contacts are very limited as I'm not wasting PBYs on naval search in the midst of such a hornet's nest but the few contacts I do have add up to a lot of DDs moving west towards Singapore and a concentrated effort to clear the path from Singapore north to India/Burma.

I've decided that the invasion of Burma must be coming soon so I've flown my first echelon long-range strike force down from Karachi. A little over 80 B-17s are basing out of Madras with orders to hit anything which approaches to within 180 miles of Rangoon while just over 200 B-25s, A-20s and two-dozen Il-4s are basing out of Calcutta with orders to begin hitting shipping in the same hex. It won't stop the invasion but I am counting on attritional losses to begin adding up and incrementally reducing Japanese capabilities. He will, obviously, LRCAP the fleet but I still think enough bombers will get through to make this worthwhile.

With 280 bombers flying at 6,000 feet and 60% getting through ( say 160 ) I can expect 16 or so bomb hits which should suffice to seriously damage 6 to 8 ships per turn. Assume the invasion takes 4 days to travel to the invasion hex, unload and back away and that adds up to a lot of shipping which won't be available for round two. Losses will be heavy but the increase in experience should compensate.

Over the next fortnight fully 800 AV of British and American troops will arrive in India and that'll bring my defensive force to well over 5,000 AV - which is quite a lot when you consider that 20 IJA divisions should muster roughly 7,000 AV. Fair enough the Japanese will have quantitative and qualitative superiority but I'm hoping my defensive bonuses and the fact that I'm working on massing a 3,000 AV "immediate counter-attack force" - a la Rommel's argument at Normandy - should help redress that balance somewhat.

As hard as it is to believe I'm actually getting a little impatient for the attack to actually come. [:D]

So basically you're saying that float planes act as transport planes should, and transports act as float planes should? [&:] Maybe the code for both plane types became mixed up? If that's the case (and you have the save games to proof it), then you should post this in the support forum, or in this thread: tm.asp?m=687130

Hmm, enemy subs are prowling the "safe routes" running along the eastern and southern map edges to Australia. Olopana is almost certain to sink but since replacements are relatively plentiful an the unit it is carrying is split between two ships I will cut it from the herd and thunder on. Speed is of the essence and it is a three month journey to India from CONUSA.

And in other news the race to reinforce Borzy continues. I can see another 20 or so enemy units advancing on Borzya but I'm also bringing in the equivalent of another 5 or 6 divisions over the next week. If it looks like I can't hold I'll simply withdraw to the hex north of Borzya which is wooded and will convey a x 3 defensive bonus.

I dont understand the strategy I just dont see India being vulnerable after 1st March it just seems weird that he would go that way

How are your supplies in India

Andy,

This is Empires Ablaze and that means that the force correlation is at least 33 to 50% more in favour of the Japanese than one would expect. E.g. I've hit India as late as March 42 and still managed to take it in testing this mod.

As to his strategy: Well if he takes Pearl Harbour ( which he will ) and knocks India out of the game then he can destroy an isolated Australia using his superior naval force to dance around my ground forces and conduct invasions which cut my Australian troops into little pockets he can destroy at his leisure. Then I'll be stuck with an attack along a single axis right through the Pacific. He will have massive productive capacity and will be able to fortify and garrison every island in the Pacific extremely heavily and turn every island into a Tinian. Even America's might will get ground down by such defences over time.

My supplies in India are very healthy. I have about 60,000 tons on Sri lanka with another 60,000 on the way. In addition calcutta, Bombay and Karachi each have over 100,000 tons of supplies. Fuel levels are extremely low but that's principally because I've been removing fuel from my bases to prevent it falling into Japanese hands. I am keeping 20,000 tons of fuel at Colombo in order to allow my fleet to sortie twice against a Japanese invasion TF - why twice? Well, I don't expect it to survive the first sortie but it certainly won't survive the second [:D]

In terms of Palembang Jagdfluger and I have agreed that he will stop bombing Palembang while I will stop building any fortifications or using the airfield to base any planes. This means I can fly my troops out but I can't actually gain any other benefit --- why am I so interested in flying troops out? Simple, there's over 300 AV of troops there and if I can fly them out that's another 300 AV available in Madras to add to my rapid reaction force. Flying them out means they won't be damaging the oil and resources at Palembang but I'd rather gain the 300 AV than cut out half of the oil --- this is because once I actually manage to hold India I plan to shove a multi-division invasion force down the throats of the Japanese in Java by year's end and retake those resources and oil... Obviously that's a long-term plan though and it all depends on holding India.

Thanks for reporting the bug, if the code is 'only' mixed up then this might be easy to fix in a patch [/wishful thinking]
ORIGINAL: Nemo121

If it looks like I can't hold I'll simply withdraw to the hex north of Borzya which is wooded and will convey a x 3 defensive bonus.
The defensive bonus for wooden hexes is 2x.

Only if you manage to cripple KB during the invasion of India, or even if KB remains (fairly) intact?

VSWG, no matter what. It is the right thing to do. The only thing which will change if KB is still in perfect shape is the cost of carrying out the invasion.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/15/42

Well I managed to lose the combat report for 14th February. I think the only thing of any significance is that it looks like there really is a major Japanese push on at Borzya. It looks to me like I may be abandoning all of the Soviet Union east of Borzya if I want to avoid having my forces in that area cut off and destroyed piecemeal.

Very interesting. This MSW was seeking to run from Manilla before Manilla fell ( which won't be long at all ) and ran into this extremely powerful surface combat TF. Could it be reinforcements making their way to Singapore in order to support an invasion?

Hmm, surely it was tempting to hit back at my Base Force but doing so at the cost of letting me know what heavy forces he has available in the area ( 3 BBs, 4 CAs, 2 to 3 CLs and a dozen DDs ) really isn't smart IMO. I have gained intel at no real cost and that's never a good deal for one's opponent. Far better to just over-run the base force with infantry and tell me nothing more than that he has some troops garrisoning Singapore ( which I would already have assumed).

Rangoon is repairing quite well. I think I'll let him bomb it back into the stone age again as my fighter pools aren't quite as good as I would like them to be yet but in about a fortnight I should be able to put up a proper fight over Rangoon. I've had a look at what is on its way to India. In about 45 days my transports and combat TFs will arrive and bring with them roughly 40,000 men including two full combat divisions, 6 CAs/CLAAAs and over three-dozen DDs, 3 BBs and the damaged CV Yorktown. In addition I will be bringing almost 300 combat airplanes either on the deck of the Yorktown or in the holds of my AKs which should help. The only problem is that they may only arrive after an invasion has already begun. If by the time they arrive there's no sign of an invasion then it may be that Jagdfluger simply isn't going to try for India - which would greatly surprise me but is just about possible. I think though the fact that I have already repulsed two invasions of Burma argues against this possibility. He wouldn't have tried to invade Burma twice ( and come back after his first repulse ) if he wasn't intending to exploit northward into India.

Ah, resource-bombing in China. I've been waiting for this to begin. I'll let it go on for a short period of time and then transfer in some I-16s once the situation over India stabilises. Really my entire strategy in China has been to reduce my supply requirements such that I can actually supply the force I have committed to action. Accordingly I have pulled out close to 1,500 AV already with another 2,500  slogging their way through the jungles to Burma and another 1,500 on the road in China inching their way towards Tsuyung.

By removing these 6,500 or so AV I will reduce my supply requirements in China by over 20,000 tons per month and mean that I can actually meet the supply requirements for my forces which remain. The main problem at the moment is in terms of HQ units but even there a stack with 3,500 AV which has sufficient support squads to meet the needs of 2,500 AV is actually not all that weakened by removing 500 AV. Sure, it ends up with only 3,500 AV but instead of a 1,000 support shortfall it will only end up with 600 to 700 shortfall and when combined with the superior supply situation you actually end up with a force which will NOT generate the same total combat power BUT will not be in danger of a sudden drop-off in its combat potential once the fighting starts since it won't run out of supply as easily and its support squads will not be so overwhelmed and thus have a better chance of repairing some of the disabled squads.

Ouch. An ambush got lucky. Fortunately a bit over half of the pilots survived and I can replace the P-43s quite easily so this isn't the disaster it looks. In fact since the pilots are now 50 Exp instead of 30 Exp I've got to say it was well worth it.

Damn, this really doesn't look good. The enemy has even more units on the way and is probably going to top out at over 7,000 AV.  I've given the order to abandon all of the Soviet Union east of Borzya. This will free up an additional 4,000 or so AV and should give me parity in the Borzya region. He really has committed a massive force to this attack. If it succeeds he should be able to knock the Soviet Union out of the war and redeploy these troops as an unstoppable force en masse in other theatres. Good play on Jagdfluger's part.

I guess he wants to increase crew experience.

FYI, if you intend to hold Borzya until 1945 and then counter-attack using the Rifle Corps, you will probably run into a problem:
ORIGINAL: treespider

What gets interesting is... no matter where or what the unit in slot 2164 is... it gets replaced with the 2nd Rifle corps and gets moved to Borzya. It maintains the planning of the previous unit.... as well as the TO&E of the previous unit...I suspect the same will be true for all of the upgrades... however they don't all go to Borzya some get moved to other locations.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/19/42

Its all looking very good so far. Manilla is still holding ( somehow ), Palembang is still mine --- and I think he might be waiting to hit it until he can muster absolutely overwhelming force... which is fine since, in the meantime I'm flying out my US, UK, Australian and Phillipino regiments and having them rebuild in India. By the time my evacuation is finished it looks like I'll have 15 Brigades or Regiments sitting in Karachi and Bombay rebuilding, that's the equivalent of an additional 5 divisions.

Things are looking good for my mid-March target of 6,000 AV in India and 3,000 AV in Burma backed up by a strong surface fleet ( about 6 BBs, about 18 CAs, CLs and CLAAs and a solid group of 48 or so DDs ) and slightly over 2,500 well-trained bombers and fighters. As time goes by and my force in the Soviet Union gets hacked to pieces my force estimate of what the enemy can bring to bear on India is methodically increasing. Previously I had assumed that 7,000 AV ( 20 divisions ) was probably the most he could bring in. Now though I think I have to assume that up to 10,000 AV could be brought to bear ( if it can survive the trip across the water).

Day Air attack on Rangoon [Burma] , at 29,33

Hmm, I moved 48 Spitfires and 30 MiG-3s to Rangoon overnight in an effort to ambush this raid. Unfortunately instead of almost 80 fighters in the air to meet the raid only 23 Spitfires took off. The end result was that I lost more planes than the Japanese. Still, I managed to get a roughly equivalent exchange rate between my Spits and the enemy Zeroes, saved most of my pilots and thus, overall, increased the experience of the Spitfire squadron ( it has only 50 Exp at the beginning of the scenario and that, obviously, is insufficient when it comes to fighting off KB's hordes. So, I'm trading airframes for pilot experience with a view to having 50 experienced Spitfire pilots in a month's time.

I don't have a clue.

I love Pe-2s [:D]. 30 planes manage to get 20 bomb hits including numerous 500Kg AP hits. None of the enemy shipping has actually sunk yet but I doubt it'll end up being available for any invasion duties in a month's time and that's the most important thing right now. Also note the lack of any Pe-2 losses.

And the Japanese forces at Borzya just keep growing stronger and stronger. There are over 50 units present with anotehr 15 to arrive. At this rate the enemy initial AV will be over 7,000. Pearl Harbour continues to be a massive killer of Japanese bombers. My supplies are now down to 2/3rd of early December levels and my forces are due to run out supply sometime in June 1942... which is just an awesome amount of time for PH to hold out. I think I might start running subs on supply missions into PH. The way I figure it 20 subs carrying 20 tons each and making 2 tips per month can bring 800 tons of supplies per month. It won't save PH but it over 4 months that's 3,200 tons of supply and can extend the amount of time PH can hold out by a couple of weeks - tieing down his CVs etc for that time.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/23/42

Tick-tock. Another day closer to March 1942... the month I begin receiving 40 Kittyhawks and 20 LaGG-3s per month in addition to my current allotment of 40 P-40Es, 20 or so Spitfires, 30 Hurricanes and 30 MiG-3s per month.

So over the past two days I've demonstrated a solid core of some 300 level bombers. Sure, Jagdfluger won't be dissuaded from invading by this force if that is his intention but he might be delayed a little and every week of delay buys me more reinforcements and a greater chance of holding out.

Hmm,it looks like Noumea definitely is next. Enemy CVs are circling the base cutting it off from resupply while enemy bombers pound it and enemy ground troops are gathering at Efateville. Fair enough, I've saved fragments from each unit in Noumea so they are more than welcome to delay the enemy by a couple of months and die in the attempt. Australian infantry replacement rates are very low but there has to be SOME cost for the delay and that's it.

The first of my major US reinforcement convoys are now 1 month from India. I am having to operate major AO groups to resupply them mid-ocean as the distances between bases make it impossible to run from base to base at top speed without refuelling mid-ocean but, overall, I think this is well worth it. Over the next month 1.5 divisions of reinforcements will appear in Aden and India while another 2 divisions will arrive from Australia and 2 further divisions will arrive from CONUSA. Oz will fall if attacked but its sacrifice secures India --- and spreads the Japanese defenders even thinner :-) while concentrating my strength.
