RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Thanks for doing another AAR Nemo, as ever its a good read and Jagdfleuger seems to be doing a good job denting the allied cause.

I've formed this little hunter-killer group in CONUSA with a view to hitting the enemy sub cordon off the West Coast. I doubt I'll sink much but even driving them back into port for repairs will help keep my shipping lanes free of predation so its worthwhile. Sooner rather than later though this is going to draw KB down in an effort to ambush these ships.

Well K-VIII's luck runs out. It sinks to the bottom off Tavoy but not before seriously damaging another Japanese AK. I have seen AKs off Tavoy almost every day for two weeks now. I just don't know what the hell's going on here and that worries me a little.I'm going to put a little commando raid ashore by sub to find out just what he has at Tavoy. If he has divisions ashore then, yes, when I sank his two BBs and his CA I prevented a major invasion of Burma. If he only has BFs there then I'm looking at a much more gradual approach to India.

Another VERY quiet day... I REALLY don't understand why he just doesn't Shock Attack. Perhaps his supply situation is precarious and he can't afford the supplies a Shock Attack would require? I have prevented him running in any supplies to PM except when escorted by a strong force of cruisers and destroyers so it is possible that that's whats happening here. I guess time will tell.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Fairbanks [Alaska] base !!!
LOL!!! Japanese paratroopers land in Alaska. American civilians go into hysterics wondering if this presages further invasions of CONUSA while the Allied high command simply laughs it off and puts out a press release stating, "If the Japanese want to create a strategic bombing base in Alaska then they are welcome to do so. When the time is right I'll take it back.
On a sidenote.... In the aztez vs ctangus AAR there has been a significant discussion about whether it is more efficient to spread your escorts out amongst your convoys or just assign an escort to each convoy and concentrate the others in hunter-killer groups with the best leaders and stationed to sprint out and cover choke points. I was going to form up ASW HK TFs in any case but I decided to move up their deployment a little to provide some evidential basis for my argument in the aztez vs ctangus AAR.
In 3 days the 32 ships I've assigned to my ASW TFs have attacked 6 submarines sinking 4 of them and sending the other 2 back to port with significant damage. I think that shows just how effective they can be - especially as there are so few of them ( only 3 TFs ) that I can afford to put my very best leaders in charge ( high naval skill, high aggression ). Ancillary benefits are that this cuts down on fuel usage and system damage incurred in steaming endlessly around covering merchant ships also.... the fuel efficiency point is particularly important for any Japanese player as the cost of having a hundred or more escorts continually steaming around penny-packeted out to individual convoys trying to give each of them a bit of cover is not at all insignificant.

Attacking force 4209 troops, 26 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 114
Defending force 2691 troops, 32 guns, 17 vehicles, Assault Value = 67
Japanese max assault: 101 - adjusted assault: 37
Allied max defense: 59 - adjusted defense: 49
Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 1)
Japanese ground losses:
105 casualties reported
Guns lost 4
Allied ground losses:
64 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Well, that answers that. Obviously the forces in Port Moresby must have been low on supply and that's why they were only deliberate attacking.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Borzya [Siberia]
Allied Bombardment attack
Attacking force 94080 troops, 1570 guns, 301 vehicles, Assault Value =
3327
Defending force 268103 troops, 3112 guns, 3841 vehicles, Assault Value
= 7312
Japanese ground losses:
21 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Borzya's really becoming the focal point for the entire Siberian front.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Fairbanks [Alaska]
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 135 troops, 5 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 6
Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0
Japanese max assault: 10 - adjusted assault: 7
Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1
Japanese assault odds: 7 to 1 (fort level 2)

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Rob,
Aye well Jagdfluger starts with an extremely, extremely strong Japan and, to be fair, for the past 6 weeks I haven't been resisting him at all, just falling back, pushing infantry forward into delaying positions and trading LCUs for time as I continue upgrading my air force and bringing men and combat vessels into action around India/repairing the damaged vessels.
So, let's look at the situation. In the past month the Allies have lost 362 additional airplanes while the Japanese have lost 301. As the Japanese are creating 366 pilots per month from their training programmes we can see that the last month will have allowed the Japanese to build up a small reserve of trained pilots again.
Allied forces have lost 27 ships to 12 Japanese ships. Most of my losses occurred during the last stages of the escape from Pearl Harbour in which over a dozen Allied ships actually made good their escape - quite a high figure given the total Japanese aerial supremacy and the number of CV TFs in the region.
So, how are things now that we're in March 1942?
Well, I continue to hold India and Burma and reinforce both strongly. In China I have already pulled out half of my forces from Eastern China and am in the process of conducting a slow, stubborn fighting withdrawal out of Eastern China towards Chungking. Combined with my withdrawal from unnecessary outposts in central China and western China I have freed over 6,500 AV of Chinese forces and sent them to Burma and India. Only 1,500 AV have yet arrived but even those forces have helped immeasurably. Bearing in mind that the forces I have evacuated from China were only at 50% TO&E and it can be seen that while I have brought 6,500 AV out of China in a few months time that 6,500 AV could, potentially, have increased in size to a force of 13,000 AV.
In the Soviet Union I'm going to have to try to hold the line at Borzya and the bases directly east of it. South-eastern Siberia has had to be abandoned. A painful but necessary loss.
Noumea and PM are purely delaying actions, New Zealand has been almost entirely abandoned. Australia west of Perth has been largely written off and will not be seriously contested if the Japanese invade... Seriously contesting eastern Australia would simply result in the Japanese using their naval supremacy to land forces behind my lines trapping my forces in pockets and, eventually, winning a strategic victory.
The Pacific is now a Japanese lake with no significant Allied holdings except New Zealand, Fiji and Noumea.
Overall though if there's no Japanese invasion of India by May 1942 I think we'll be seeing a massive Allied amphibious invasion of Java in June 1942 which ought to keep things exciting and bloody. My thinking is as follows:
1. If I can take Java then that will force the Japanese to focus on Java again to the exclusion of India.
2. It will force the Japanese to engage in costly amphibious invasions which will give me an opportunity to attrit their AKs, APs and escorts.
3. It will allow me to stage a major surface combat fleet in major ports and operate this fleet under the umbrella of my own CAP.
4. It will give me the opportunity to mount truly significant strategic bombing campaigns with a view to destroying the oil resources the Japanese began the war to secure.
If succesfull then by the end of 1942 I should be finding that while Japan can still produce a lot of weaponry its oil reserves are running low and more and more Japanese forces will have to be drawn into the fight around Java and directed away from the Pacific ( which should give me an opening to conduct limited offensives there to secure a more direct SLOC between CONUSA and Australia.
I very much want to get any invasion underway before July 1942 though as in June 1942 both the torpedo bomber version and radio-controlled glide bomber versions of the Me-264 come onstream and in testing those two bomber types proved absolutely lethal to Allied fleets, especially BBs and CVs.

First, praise and thanks are again due for this very insightful AAR. Nothing like hard numbers to get a good grasp of what's going on.
What's the rationale for having the radio-controlled glide bomb available so early? It seems to me that the Japanese would take a little time to make it operational even after receiving the German blueprints. (They found it more expedient to ship a submarine load of German 20mm aircraft cannon to Japan rather than build their own.)
Lastly, there is one other possibility for Jagdfluger's deliberate attacks instead of shock attacks. Might he be trying to build the experience of some of his second-string LCU's in places which he believes are certain to fall eventually?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Thanks, I hoped that the AAR would:
a) shed some light on Empires Ablaze as a mod.
b) illustrate what would probably be some unorthodox play by both sides ( which I think has happened [:D] )
so feel free to ask my to clarify anything you are unclear on... I'm more than happy to answer as I am definitely going to make some changes in the mod... E.g. I am definitely thinking of putting the glider-bomb Me-264 back to September 42 or possibly even January 43 just for playability reasons. I think I will also increase Allied fighter production in early 42 a bit at the expense of the hordes of transports etc they are getting but can't use cause they don't have the transport squadrons available.
The rationale behind having the glide bomb this early was that it was available to the Germans fairly early on ( prior to mid-41 for sure ) and thus could easily have been shipped to Japan as part of the supposed interchange of ideas which led to Japan adopting the Me-109 and Me-264. The glide-bomb wasn't actually all that advanced a piece of kit and certainly was something which Japanese industry of the time could have produced ( not perfectly perhaps .... which is one reason its accuracy is MUCH less than the German version... I am trying to represent problems with quality control and advanced electronics etc ).
As to what he is doing in terms of all those deliberate attacks... Yeah I thought of that but several of the units he is deliberate attacking with are actually very high experience anyways. At kuantan he is definitely using my BF for training but at PM he has the 56th Independent Brigade which is a pretty good unit... and if you look at it it has clearly run out of supplies, dropped its adjusted AV and will require a lot of supplies before it can attack again.
I'm sure he has a plan and I'm sure it makes sense--- he's a very good player --- but I'm just not seeing the rationale right now.

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Ok time for the monthly update on the defence of India. I will list the AV per city and the names of the key defensive units there.
Chittagong:
2,820 mines, 150 AV: 46th Bde Indian Army, RIN Chittagong Fort, 2 x FA Rgts, Indian Army 25th/18th Garwahl Bn. Clear terrain, Level 3 forts and almost a Level 2 airfield ( for Pe-2 basing when the time comes ). 200 guns are available for anti-landing operations. An Indian Division is on the way to reinforce this and put the AV up over 500.
Calcutta:
5,728 mines, 1,356 AV, Level 5 airfield, Level 3 forts, Urban Terrain:
20th Indian Army Division, ROC 36th, ROC 38th, ROC 96th and ROC 29th Divisions. Indian Army 45th, 71st, 63rd and 13th Bdes. BA 1st Burma Bde, 4 x Aviation Base Forces, India Command Land HQ. 211 artillery pieces are available for anti-landing operations.
The ROC units are only at about 50% strength overall and 33% effective combat strength BUT they are rebuilding and about every 2 days they gain 1% of their full TO&E. In 2 months time I expect these divisions to muster an AV of 300 or so each instead of the current AV of between 110 and 140. Chinese units, the gift that just keeps on giving [:D].
There's an Air HQ on the way to ensure I can maximise my bomber sorties from Calcutta airfield ... without a HQ fewer bombers will fly.
Diamond Harbour:
6,067 mines, 159 AV ( will be reinforced by units rebuilding in the supply and HQ-rich environment of Calcutta the second I see the Japanese coming ), Level 2 airfield, Level 5 forts, SWAMPY terrain ( good defensive bonuses ). Indian Army 44th Bde, Diamond Harbour Fort, 2 x Base Forces.
Vizgatapam:
No mines ( that will change soon ), 250 AV, Level 1 airfield, Level 2 forts, CLEAR terrain. Vizgatapam is a nice place for the Japanest to invade as it allows them to exploit in two clear directions and is poor defensive ground. For this reason I'm putting a small force there behind significant forts but I amn't building up the airbase. I expect it to fall but once it does I'll flatten it with heavy bomber strikes.
Indian Army 36th and 37th Bdes and 1 x Corps-level engineer unit ( supplying 120 engineers all by itself [:D] ).
Madras:
5346 mines, 1,632 AV, Level 4 airfiel, Level 3 forts, URBAN terrain. UK Southeast ASia HQ present and Air HQ also present.
Indian Army 19th Diision, 1st Bde, 47th Bde, 49th Bde, 48th Bde, 99th Bde, 16th Bde, 3rd Bde, 254th and 255th Tank Bdes, US Army 102nd Regiment. There are also 4 Artillery Units and 3 AAA units to help kill Japanese airplanes and transports/MSWs.
Madurai:
I wasn't fortifying this until recently but recently I've ordered some engineers and a couple of regiments in. 150 AV, mountainous terrain and approaching Level 1 forts.
My plan is to use the mountains plus Level 9 forts to get a x 9 defensive bonus which would allow my forces from Madras ( 1,500 AV ) to hold 14,500 AV. Madurai cannot be bypassed easily. The only valid way of bypassing it is via Cochin ( clear terrain). Once at Cochin the Japanese can either make for Mandalore ( wooded and under fortification thus potentially gaining a x 9 defensive bonus ) or through to move around behind Madurai ( again requiring passing through wooded terrain which I can move forces into more quickly than the Japanese can ).
Trincomalee.
4,898 mines, 210 AV, wooded terrain, Level 4 airfield, Level 4 forts. Air HQ, 3 x AAA Regiment, 31 artillery pieces. Most of the forces earmarked for Trincomalee are actually building up in Colombo and will only move to Trincomalee once the Japanese fleet is sighted so my defences allocated for Trincomalee actually include well over 500 AV.
Colombo:
13 mines ( I'll be building this up once I'm happy with Vizgatapam ), Level 4 airfield, Naval HQ, Air HQ, four AAA Regiments, 314 artillery pieces, Level 6 forts ( and increasing ) and mountainous terrain. 816 AV:
UK 18th Division, Australian 3rd Division, Australian 3r Bde, IA Ceylon Bde. Yes, I did say Aussie Divisions and Bdes [:D]
Mangalore:
120 AV, mountainous terrain, Level 1 forts and soon to be a level 2 airfield.
Pangim:
Level 3 forts, clear terrain and a US Regiment with 90 AV in situ.
I should also state that 300 AV are on the way south from Bombay to Madurai and Vizgatapam but just haven't arrived yet...
Bombay:
Level 4 airfield, Level 5 port, 56 AV in situ but lots of damaged Bdes on the way from Karachi for rebuilding. At present there are 10 Bdes requiring rebuilding in India. Currently they account for only 250 AV. When fully repaired they could account for about 800 AV. So I am in the process of splitting them half and half between Karachi and Bombay. Even if I'm invaded it'll take a month to get to Bombay or Karachi by which time these Bdes should be at over 50% strength and able to contribute usefully.
So, overall, in India I have just over 5,400 AV right now. But I have a lot more on the way. I've already covered the 2,000+ Chinese AV which I'm going to march in overland from Burma ( after leaving a further 2,000 there to bolster the defence of Burma ) so I'll go straight to units loaded on ship and on the way in....
Australian 1st Division + 2 Tank Bns: 4 days away.
31 planes: 10 days away.
Australian 12th Bde 10 days away
New Zealand 2nd Bde + 2nd Cavalry Bde: 13 days away
USAAF fighter squadron: 12 days away.
Australian 7th Division + fighter squadron: 15 days away.
More than a month away: New Zealand 10th Home Defence Bde.
Ships in theatre:

Ships on the way from Britain:
CV: 1

In addition in about a month to a month and a half the following forces should also arrive from the US: USMC 2nd Division, USMC Parachute Bn, 6 Engineer Units, US 41st Division, AAA units and a couple of CD units as well as 340 planes ( mainly dive-bombers, torpedo bombers and army and US Navy fighter squadrons.... This means I will be able to bring my large numbers of A-24, TBMs and F4F4s into the fight over Burma and give my forces there greater staying power as opposed to just having to rely on my P-40E fighter pools ( 40 per month ) and my British pools ( about 50 front-line fighters per month ).
So, about 1500 AV on the way by sea with a lot of planes and enough ships that assuming nothing else happens in the next 6 weeks either my defence of India or my invasion of Java can be supported by:
8 BB, 5 CV, 1 CVL, 12 CA, 2 CLAA, 20 CL, 65 DD and 5 DM. That's more than enough shipping to really mess up an invasion fleet while it is trying to unload, no? [:D] [:D] [:D] Hmm, 107 surface combat ships.. Not bad at all and if the invasion of India comes I will spend every single one of those ships ( except the CVs ) to inflict losses on the enemy fleet.
So, that's about it. In other news I have 60 MiG-3s available now, just under 96 P-40 Es, 40 or so Spitfires and about 80 front-line Hurricanes. By the middle of the month I'm expecting to have about 150 P-40 Es online in India, 20 Kittyhawks, 50 Spitfires and those 80 Hurricanes. Once I have those 300 planes I will consider flying 200 of them into Rangoon and making a fight of it. That won't be for another 2 weeks though, I won't go back again unless I have a chance of actually staying.
Chittagong:
2,820 mines, 150 AV: 46th Bde Indian Army, RIN Chittagong Fort, 2 x FA Rgts, Indian Army 25th/18th Garwahl Bn.

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
To be honest mate I can't see him attacking India, I reckon he'll take russia and maybe have a crack as Aussy land or New Zealand but I think it would be daft for him to go for india.
Your very positive about most things as I've read most of your site but if he never went for India ould you be dis-appointed?
I also reckon it's going to be a real stuggle for you to fight back in the late war the allies gain an advantage in the air/sea but only a little (I've heard it meantion on this site before but wouldn't say I had the knowledge my self) on LCU's which would mean steam rolling through India would be very hard if he stuck most of his force's there. I reckon he's going to know where the most of your forces are because there won't be many place's to put them west coast, india, maybe Aussy land.
Really enjoying the ARA though... and cheers :@)

I could be completely wrong about this, but I don't think Jagdfluger can afford to ignore India. The tremendous manpower potential is something the Japanese need to factor into their plans. At the minimum, the Burma road needs to be closed so that supplies and troops don't pour into China. Possibly the Japanese might be able to block the counter-attack just north of this area, but with the ships and aircraft Nemo is flooding into India, he will be able to operate amphibiously. (Nemo has himself mentioned liberating Java, and Sumatra and its vital oil fields are even closer.)
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Heenanc,
Oh I think you underestimate Jagdfluger's ambition. I think he is going to try taking all of the Soviet Union, all of China, all of Oz, then all of India and then, finally, he will try to invade the actual American mainland. If push comes to shove and he has the capability he'll take everything available... Why? Because I would and he plays like me [:D]
As to whether or not I'll be disappointed if he doesn't come for India? No, not at all. If he doesn't come for India I'll just go for Java sooner rather than later.
If he ignores India then he loses the game IMO.... Why? Well if he holds Sumatra, Java, Australia, Fiji etc but doesn't hold India I can simply sail down the map edge and by the time I decide to hook a left and head for Java or Australia or Fiji or Sumatra I will be only five days sail away from landing. Can I survive 5 days of attacks? Yes, especially when only the last 2 days or so of attacks will occur with escort fighters. Will I suffer massive losses? Sure but if I were to, for example, land with 15 full-strength Chinese Field Armies I'd be landing with a total force of about 9,000 AV and in the clear terrain of northern Java 9,000 AV is going to take quite a few bases before being stopped ... and a stalemate in which I hold Java while he holds Borneo and Sumatra suits me perfectly in terms of favourable attrition.

I just landed a sub-load of troops at Victoria Point to check what the 18 units there were. It turns out they are mostly engineers, AAA etc and certainly not the regiments and divisions I was fearing. Interesting !!!

Hmm, that's not much of a force. A division suicide-landed there could take Victoria Point and disrupt the Japanese build-up significantly. If I had a Chinese Field Army available and a US CV or two to provide strong CAP I'd consider actually doing this. As it is it is a missed opportunity.

Well, that's that settled then.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/03/42
Rangoon's at 73% damage. Tomorrow it will be at under 69% damage so CAP will fly. Tonight the fighters go in. I have just under 200 available and within range with another 200 top-line fighters available over the next couple of days should losses warrant it. Hopefully though they won't and I'll be able to concentrate on creating additional well-protected bases.

Not bad, my ambush nets 14 Zeroes and pilots at a cost of 2 pilots and 3 easily-replaceable planes.
A very interesting mix of aircraft. (I would not have included the Hurricanes, but from the results, I'd have been wrong.) IRL this would have given the support personnel screaming fits. We'll know we have a REALLY sophisticated game when it demands you send Russian interpreters.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Over the past 2 days I've lost 18 planes ( and far fewer than that in terms of pilots while the Japanese have lost over 40 planes. Japanese aerial losses are remaining very high even on relatively quiet days. Sure many of them are bomber pilot losses and thus can be replaced by 30 Exp pilots but it still all helps in the medium term.
Most of my US reinforcements ( especially the 300 or so planes ) are now only 1 month out. Can't wait to increase my resistance to fighter losses by 50% by getting access to the 96 F4F-4s per month that a Wildcat squadron can avail of. In addition the pilot pool will help as while I have about 120 UK pilots in the pool I only have 20 or so Ozzie and Kiwi pilots and those won't last long once major combat is joined.
At present Rangoon is repairing service damage and sooner rather than later I'm planning to invest a few hundred more fighters into the other airbases in Burma. With that done I may actually begin seriously looking at mounting offensive action from these bases.

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Harlock,
Bah !!! A warrior doesn't need support personnel... oh, wait, yeah they do. Crap!!!
Seriously though, yeah in real life this mix would require some really significant Soviet input with evacuation of aviation support personnel from Siberia and their shipping to Pakistan via the Middle East. It certainly could have been done in the 3 months it has taken but yeah I'm a definite proponent of lessening the efficiency of support personnel when they have non-native airframes to cater to ( although with gradually increasing proficiency over time ).
With that said though Empires Ablaze really is a fangs out nap of the earth dogfight in which the basic rule is "if it could have happened and isn't an exploit of a game bug then feel free to do it". Would Stalin have sent troops and ships into Pakistan instead of trying to hold in Siberia? Doubtful BUT since it could have happened its quite fair game. Hell, I'm half expecting a Japanese invasion of CONUSA... I've stopped shipping divisions out of CONUSA in order to ensure I have sufficient ground forces at hand if such an invasion does happen. I wouldn't put anything past Jagdfluger. I don't think he's quite as aggressive as me but he's pretty damned close and I certainly would entertain the possibility of a surprise invasion of CONUSA so I think it has definitely crossed his mind. If I sent everything I have there to India then even with those 6 months worth of reinforcements in one go he might actually be able to grab a foothold and wreak absolute havoc on my factories and reinforcement arrival bases.
I'll sketch out an initial assessment of the ground units which could be committed to an invasion of Java next turn. It will be Chinese-heavy as if the invasion is an absolute disaster I'll get those Chinese units back in Chungking at half strength in 30 days as opposed to something like a year and a half in Aden or CONUSA. So, committing mostly Chinese units means I need to risk far, far less. So, as I keep saying to Aztez, its just a much more efficient invasion with Chinese units.
