.... Furthermore, manpower also needs resources, but I guess this effect can be neglected, since there are enough resource centers under Jap. control to feed HI and manpower.....

Prolly depends on the mod, but in CHS 155, the manpower centers are killing us for res. They eat at least 30% of resource production.

As to Manpower - Yeah that's why no matter what you do you shouldn't bomb manpower. Each manpower centre uses 10 resource points. So if you have 100 resource points produced in a base every turn but 10 manpower points you end up with about 80 supply produced per turn but NO resources ( as the manpower consumes them all ).

If you bomb the 10 manpower points you have just gifted Japan an additional 100 resources per day. I left manpower out of the model above as it just so obviously shouldn't be bombed. If you really want to take the Home Islands out of the war and have flattened everything else then just bomb resources. Sure the HI can continue to draw from the stockpile BUT so will all the manpower in the Home Islands and thus you get a really rapid drawdown in the resource reserves. Don't hit the HI or you will just slow down the rate of production but still ensure the exact same amount gets produced overall...not a smart trade IMO.

P.s. In-game I've decided to go for Java and to go early. Several Aussie divisions are tasked for the mission in order to make up for the Chinese Field Armies and my first landing should comprise over 4,000 AV which should be enough. One of my transport convoys carrying several engineer and AAA units was unloading at Bombay and then just disappeared. I can't find the actual ships or units on them anywhere. It looks like they've hit my very own bermuda triangle. Weird bug.

Anyways, given a 15 day transit time from Colombo to Tjilitjap ( using a routing which gives the greatest chance of not being seen ) I can confidently expect to land by the end of April. In the meantime I'm going to continue my strikes and CAP etc to draw ever more of the Japanese fleet and air force into the battle for Burma so that they will be dislocated and attrited when my strike nears Java.

What is going on around Hawaii??
Has he taken everything, but Pearl, and just using Pearl for daily bombing runs until you run out of supply??

Oh bugger - I spent months trying to hit manpower to create firestorms and failed every time....

Sounds like resources would have been a better bet !!!

He isn't even bombing Pearl anymore. He has withdrawn his bombers from Hawaii in order to refocus them on DEI, China, Rangoon and Noumea. My supplies are dropping by about 5,000 per month so I should be running out by September but, to be honest, by then I should be able to evacuate as much as I want and bring additional supplies in by sub should I wish to do so.

I am confused by jagdfluger's planning here. Obviously he is trying to maintain momentum and striking power by eliminating my ability to resist and then leaving a holding force behind such that I cannot rebuild or reinforce ( he has done this at Manilla, Palembang and PH. He also appears to be doing this at Kodiak. The problem is that if I counter-attack it is much easier to do so when i have a ready-made staging area right in the middle of his holdings. I can't really counter-attack around PH but with Palembang, a couple of the Dutch DEI bases and Manilla still in my hands I definitely should find my job in reinvading Java to be a fair bit easier than it would otherwise be.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/26/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Rangoon [Burma] at 29,33

Japanese Ships
PT Gyoraitei No 2
PT Gyoraitei No 3

Allied Ships
LCVP LCP(L) No. 180, Shell hits 2
LCVP LCP(L) No. 181, Shell hits 1
LCVP LCP(L) No. 182
LCVP LCP(L) No. 183, Shell hits 2
LCVP LCP(L) No. 184, Shell hits 2
LCVP LCP(L) No. 185, Shell hits 1

Japanese PTs finally make a strike. It is all relatively inconclusive though. I was hoping to have 3 CAs, 2 BBs, 1 CL and 2 DDs on station by tomorrow but for some reason the TF stopped 9 hexes from Rangoon and can only make 8 hexes per day. Accordingly I've sent the BBs and a slow CA home and will make a high speed run into Rangoon with just 2 CA, 1 CL and 3 DD. All I need to do is damage his shipping in order to make it easier prey for my torpedo bombers, I don't need actual sinkings.

Hmm and he has brought an ASW TF up to Victoria Point. That's risking a lot of ships to little gain.

137 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

It is a day of massive losses all round.

By day's end over 30 Japanese planes have been destroyed on the ground. Well, I guess that the Pe-2 attacks on Taoy will continue for the forseeable future. Even jagdfluger's economy can't replace 600 airframes a month to no gain.

Allied aircraft losses

The Mikes are more than a match for the I-16s so I will withdraw them from Moulmein next turn. I have 900 AV there in mountainous terrain so there should be enough to hold against any reasonable-sized landing he can put together with or without air superiority.

Here's the situation in DEI.

USS Yorktown is just about in range of Palembang and has flown 36 SBD-3s and 15 Avengers into Palembang. Yorktown is not fit for any further offensive action as it has gained 30 system damage in the sprint from the West Coast ( and it began with 18 system damage ). Still, I don't need Yorktown for the invasion as I'll just fly the F4F4s off British CVs ( which currently house Martlett IIIs and IVs ) while Yorktown is in a major base repairing system damage.

I'll fly strikes from Palembang tomorrow and then I'll fly the survivors out to Rangoon. Also notice that Teloekboetang is still in my hands. My current plan is just to land there and unload there in peace ( although I will conduct some sub-borne recon of the other bases in Java in order to find any undefended ones so that I can land in them also should I so choose ). From there it is the Southern Borneo route to Jolo from whence I will link up with Davao and ship reinforcements and suppies into Manilla.

IF it works I could recapture southern Borneo, Java and the southern Phillipines in about 5 months time and absolutely cripple the Japanese warfighting effort by mid-43. Obviously it won't work out nearly so cleanly BUT jagdfluger will recognise this risk the instant I land and will have to devote massive naval, aerial and land resources to stop me in my tracks and, eventually, push me back and in so doing he will lose men, materiel and, most importantly, time which will allow me to stabilise CONUSA and ensure that no invasion of India will ever be possible.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/27/42

A brilliant day for the Allies. Japanese planes flutter down by their hordes, a half-division is stranded in the Siberian tundra and a surprise strike against an enemy convoy goes off without a hitch.

Well it looks as though he has decided to really try to clean up the eastern coast of Borneo - a thing I don't want because it will prevent me flying fighters from Rangoon down to Java. So, I'll fly some Chinese troops in to the next base in the line and see if I can't hold for a little while.

Jagdfluger is very unhappy with the Pe-2 situation as they cannot be intercepted by his fighters ( since they fly higher than his CAP can reach ). He argues that while the B-17Es can fly high and bomb from on high with reduced accuracy ( entirely fair and accounted for in the game code ) the Pe-2s receive no such penalty since they fly in high over CAP, drop down low to bomb with normal accuracy and then fly away with no chance of being intercepted.

He has a point but because this same issue effects ALL dive-bombers ( the code doesn't allow interceptions while in a dive or during the pull-up ) I amn't willing to just accept that I can't fly divebombers in above his Zero CAP. Jagdfluger then pointed out that once I got the Helldiver I'd have divebombers that could fly in above the ceiling of any fighter he had in his fleet and thus his KB would become nothing more than a sitting target rom January 1944 onward - I don't necessarily think this is unfair ( as the Helldiver did have this ceiling in reality and so taking advantage of it isn't unfair) BUT it would turn the game from a competition into a turkey shoot and I want to win fair and square so we've agreed the following house rules ( I hate house rules but its better than having an unhappy opponent ).

a) Pe-2s will only fly every 2nd day.
b) Helldivers and dive-bombers vs naval targets will be limited to 21,000 feet.
c) Kamikazes will ALSO be limited to 21,000 feet ( this is the trade-off as if I amn't taking advantage of high ceilings to evade CAP then neither can he,
d) against land bases you can use whatever ceiling you want for your dive-bombers.

Fighter units in training ( e.g. My P-43s and P-36s) are excluded from this cap on flight level and level bomber units are accounted for in the code so they are excluded as well.

30 Ki-32s are shot down over Rangoon and only four make it through to drop their bombs. What I find interesting is that he is using Ki-32s over Rangoon instead of the considerably more effective and survivable Ki-21s. On that note on 1st April 1942 the Ki-48 II enters production and this is Japan's first armoured bomber which should help his units survive in the face of my FlAK.

A listing of losses for the day. By 1944 this will be a common loss rate but for right now it is devastating. Japan has lost almost 300 planes in the last 4 days which is probably means he has lost 2/3rds of a month's pilot production right here.

Why am I accepting these heavy losses right now ( since it is also culling my fighter ranks far more quickly than I can replace them) ? Simple, anything I can do to reduce pilot quality and bomber numbers in the region prior to beginning my landings will increase the survivability of my shipping and my only real choice is to lose these planes now or lose these planes later in achieving roughly similar attrition. Since killing them now ENSURES they can't bomb my shipping ( or escort the bombers which try to ) I prefer to kill them now rather than then.

One other thing I am doing by mounting attacks etc from numerous bases is forcing jagdfluger to spread his bomber assets ever more thinly in order to keep each and every one of those bases suppressed. If he doesn't keep them suppressed he will find another raid flying out of them one of these fine days --- and obviously keeping them suppressed entails incurring operational and FlAK losses he could otherwise avoid.

Hi Nemo.

I notice from your posts that the Pe-2 flying at it's highest cannot be intercepted by Japanese fighters.  Is that historical or a little bit of dodgy scenario writing.  I've found a range of ceilings for the PE-2, but the one most commonly quoted is roughtly 29,000 ft.  Doesn't strike me as uninterceptable historically.

Hi Yakface,

Well I took the ceiling from RHS whose research is pretty solid IMO. It is on the order of 32,000 feet and is only a couple of hundred feet higher than the Mike. It is much higher than the Zero which tops out at about 26,000 feet. I used RHS' figures and I think they are solid --- or at the least consistent.

I know that Sid (Cid, el Cid, El cid.......one of those) us obsessive about the accuracy of his mod.  I wonder if in the case of ceilings the game can't really handle the situation properly with the result that the game suffers.

For example take level bombers flying above the maximum ceiling of the CAP say 35,000 ft, they still manage to do significant damage to the airfield if used in decent (80+) numbers.  I was on the end of this for a short while.  Nothing the IJAF can do about it = very boring game.  I have doubts that the game models very high altitude bombing well - either it's accuracy or the increased chance that bombers will never even find their target.

I know you are testing a scenario out and in terms of realism maybe the reduced ceilings for fighers is justified (though every ceiling I've seen for Zero and 109E has been well above 30,000ft).  I'd encourage raising the ceiling of all fighters above that of just about every bomber (excepting maybe the B17 and B29).   It will avoid a lot of bust ups between players about what is gamey etc

Well a couple of points:

My mod is all about getting the most realistic facts and figures BUT giving players options which are ahistorical so, ideally, you get the best combat model and then can choose to either play a really historical game ( fine ) OR explore the edges of the envelope. Just because I'm willing to compromise as re: high-altitude kamis and Helldivers doesn't mean I want to force other players to. So, since the figures show those ceilings those are the ceilings I'm going to go with. I'd much rather let players come up with house rules ( if they think they want them ) than put in false data since that's a very slippery slope.

Well, it may be a boring game but it was also technically accurate ( with respect to the B-17s at high altitude ) so i'm happy to leave it as is. In terms of accuracy I've run several tests and at 70 Exp+ 720 bombs dropped by B-17s at 32,400 feet yield between 8 and 12 hits. So averaging that out it is about 1.4 hits per 100 bombs dropped ( or 8 B-17s ). So, a squadron of 12 B-17s can expect two hits at high altitude which I think is fairly reasonable and hardly all that devastating.

If you want to stop them then you have to go after their airfields. This mirrors real-life situations quite well also. E.g. I can't kill Mikes in the air at an acceptable exchange rate so I avoid them ( they have a max range of 2 hexes ) or go after them while they are on the ground.

Personally I feel the Pe-2 situation is akin to the Zeroes range etc. Sure its a bitch to deal with but it would be as wrong for me to ask Zeroes to be limited to 8 hexes range as it is to ask for the Pe-2 to be crippled cause it flies "too high". Well, we don't cripple Zeroes because they "fly too far". Still, in the interests of having a good game I'm willing to reduce the effectiveness of 70 planes by 50% as 70 planes out of 4,200 is hardly a decisive number and, to be honest, I really don't expect this game to get into kamikaze territory.

Very interesting numbers--thanks for posting them. Unless I'm mistaken Jagdfluger will reach the end of his "Kilkenny cat's" tail before you will. (BTW about how many pilots per month do the Allies get in this scenario?)

I was rather surprised at the mangling your PBY ranks have received. I assume most of those were caught on the ground?

The Japanese get 216 x 65 Exp pilots (IJN) and 150 x 60 Exp pilots ( IJA). The Allies get about three times that number but some are very low experience. Here are the figures;

65 Exp pilots: USN -200

60 Exp pilots: US Army - 400, USMC - 100, British-80,

55 Exp pilots: Oz - 25, Kiwi - 10, Indian - 25, Commonwealth - 10, Canada -25.

40 Exp: Soviet - 100,

35 Exp pilots: Chinese 10.

So, overall, the Japanese get slightly more 65 Exp pilots in their navy ( 216 per month vs 200 ) BUT lose out badly once the army air forces get involved, 150 x 65 Exp pilots vs 580 x 65 Exp Allied pilots. Throw in another 100 or so 55 Exp pilots and you can see that the IJN can pretty much hold its own but if the Allies choose to attrition the Japanese using their army air force then they are going to have 4:1 odds in their favour. If the Allied player goes in with his navy without such attrition then the Japanese player will handily defeat him ( but I think that's how it should be ). Also don't forget that the Japanese can use their 65 and 60 Exp pilots to fill out their fighter units only --- using supply training to train 30 Exp bomber pilots whereas the Allies will tend to "waste" 60 Exp pilots in bomber formations AND will lose pilots to rotation policies also.

PBYs: Umm I've lost 233 and 124 of those were on the ground. About 60 of the rest were from A2A while I was evacuating Palembang and other bases ( so a price well worth paying )

In terms of pilots: I am fairly certain jagdfluger was almost out of trained pilots at the beginning of the month. Losses have been very light all month until the last couple of days but I think that with th losses of the last 4 days he is almost out of Army pilots. He probably has a couple of hundred IJN pilots left ( 100 to 200 ) but I am sure his army pilot pools must be hurting. My forces are hurting too though obviously but I'm fortunate that I have enough airframes to put up with this for another week or so while he appears to have run out of pilots.

One thing which I think is clear by now is that jagdfluger is a more conservative commander than I. When he suffers heavy losses he pulls back and re-organises and will try again later if conditions are favourable. My instinctive reaction when faced by a strong defence is to pile on more offensive power ASAP in order to overwhelm and crush it. This difference in style has allowed me to adopt a very German Eastern Front defence in which minimal forces put up enough of a fight to blunt the first thrust and then I pull out before the hammerblow falls a month or two later --- if the hammerblow fell 3 days later then the base would fall 3 days later.

E.g. PM - I moved a Brigade in and held on for over 3 months while jagdfluger ran in several resupply and reinforcement convoys etc. Once I judged he was getting too strong I evacuated oer 2/3rds of the garrison before it fell.

Noumea - I moved in about 6 Bdes and a division but have been evacuating them recently. I am confident enough that I'll get to save 2/3rds of each of these forces ( minimum ) before Noumea falls. End result I've stalled his advance on New Zealand for at least 2 months ( and expect it to hold for another month ) and it'll cost me, roughly, 2 Bdes worth of troops ( although since I'm evaccing to Australia those Bdes and the Division can rebuild in Oz ).

New Zealand. I have about 100 bombers there but no troops except for the CD units. I have withdrawn my troops to Oz but I am betting that jagdfluger will assume I'm trying to hold... Why I would I can't see as I can get to Oz using the shipping channel which simulates running troops through the Atlantic and into Oz from the west but, hey, if he wants to overstretch I won't stop him.

P.s. Check out those Zero losses. 488 losses in just under 4 months. That's over 120 Zeroes lost per month. I'm pretty damned happy with that. That's a lot of IJN pilots dead.

The nice thing with WiTP is that it models the greater questions well. It is ALL about logistics. I am trying to use my large pilot pools to wear his down such that my lower number of US Navy pilots gain a major qualitative advantage and thus multiply the effectiveness of my CVs --- although, obviously, apart from covering the run-in to Java my CVs aren't going to do much of anything for the next 6 months or so. I'm just going to hop eastward from base to base trying to keep each hop as short as possible but accepting heavy losses in transports ( and loaded troops ) in return for saving my CVs.

P.s. I just checked and from Aparri all of the southern island of Japan is within range of my B-17Es [:D].

Defending force 2885 troops, 19 guns, 9 vehicles, Assault Value = 147

Japanese ground losses:
10 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

And for the third day in a row Japanese losses exceed mine by a significant margin. Just with the raid over Rangoon he lost 24 IJN pilots... That's about 11% of his monthly IJN pilot pool and is unsustainable. In the last month even though we've had relatively light combat for most of the month ( although we've made up with it in the past 5 days with about 400 Japanese and about 200 Allied planes being destroyed ) about 1600 planes have been destroyed. Interestingly the number of planes lost is split fairly evenly which is GREAT news for the Allies since I only get stronger as 1942 goes on. Admittedly my bomber losses will increase markedly once I go over to the general offensive from Java but I can swallow heavy bomber losses as it helps gain me a buffer against the invasion of India and is thus worth the cost.

Hi Nemo,

I was just looking at the loss of aircraft - almost 50% for Japan. I'm not used to seeing losses like this. What causes this in this particular battle? Is this a speed issue again or is it perhaps low pilot experience? What are the factors in these results from your perspective?
TTFN,

Well I think that there are two issues here:

1. Looking at the number of firing passes which occurred but which didn't result in kills but which would have resulted in kills in the stock game I am quite confident that in the stock game Japanese losses would have been much higher.

2. I can't speak for jagdfluger but I will say that I have put my best units, best pilots and best leaders ( highest inspiration, highest aggression and as high an air skill as I can find ) in those fighter squadrons over Rangoon. I've done everything possible to ensure that these squadrons will fight to the last plane and man ( e.g. I ran a disastrous P-39 strike into Tavoy and instead of breaking off when they went in with no CAP my P-39s bored in until all 16 were destroyed).

3. Personally my assessment of the units jagdfluger committed is that at least one of them was one of his premier IJN fighter units. It had many of his aces and, in fact, one of his top aces died today
LTJG Matsubara S. of F1 Dai/Tainan Kktai is credited with kill number 12
LTJG Matsubara S. of F1 Dai/Tainan Kktai is KILLED

So I think that in all probability you just saw very high losses because very high morale units with aggressive, inspirational leaders clashed and the clashed in pretty large numbers. From my previous testing I can also say that whatever the losses were in this mod they would have been much higher in stock... AND much more one-sided. In stock I believe ( from my review of the replay ) that we would have seen the entire Japanese strike slaughtered in return for slightly lower Allied losses. So in terms of balance the Japanese lost less and I lost more --- which is good as one of my goals was to prevent massive turkey-shoots or to ensure that if they did happen that at least the escorts' sacrifice would let some bombers get through. In this meeting only 1 of the bombers was downed by my CAP so the Zeroes' sacrifice got 17 of the 18 bombers through.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Strangely enough jagdfluger selected Pursue for this attack on a worn out guerilla regiment. This has resulted in one of his armoured units encountering the entire 2,177 AV of my Eastern Army Group. Obviously I'm going to return the favour and see if I can't nip off this Tank Regiment and, possibly, any weakish advance he is making into the previous hex.

And his rushed attempt to hold me at Naga has just resulted in more losses for his forces. It is kind of amazing to think that I'm capable of counter-offensives in Manilla in late March 1942 [:D]

I had also based 30 Pe-2s in Manilla but we had a synch bug. In the official version of the turn they did nothing. In the version I saw in my combat replay they sank 2 oil-laden tankers and the DE escorting them. Pity!

Overall though things are going well and I realised that the two partial US divisions arriving in Aden are actually the HQs of divisions I am transporting to India. I have about 80% of 41st Infantry and 2nd USMC divisions in or around Perth now but the other 20% are due to arrive in Aden in 8 days. So, making a virtue of necessity I've added those two divisions to the invasion of Java. It will let jagdfluger know I've weakened the West Coast ( which I dislike ) but I can't just have two divisions being neutered by being split up like this.

The Japanese get 216 x 65 Exp pilots (IJN) and 150 x 60 Exp pilots ( IJA). The Allies get about three times that number but some are very low experience. Here are the figures;

65 Exp pilots: USN -200

60 Exp pilots: US Army - 400, USMC - 100, British-80,

55 Exp pilots: Oz - 25, Kiwi - 10, Indian - 25, Commonwealth - 10, Canada -25.

40 Exp: Soviet - 100,

35 Exp pilots: Chinese 10.

PBYs: Umm I've lost 233 and 124 of those were on the ground. About 60 of the rest were from A2A while I was evacuating Palembang and other bases ( so a price well worth paying )

Very interesting analysis, and much appreciated. I'd forgotten about the use of PBY's to evacuate troops. (Gives self dope-slap.) Indeed, a fair price to pay.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?
