I've done a little research today to figure out precisely what the Java campaign will result in in terms of diminution of Japanese productive capacity. Note that I'm using RHS EOS as a basis for my economic model so the amount of oil produced in various places is quite different than in stock -- it is, in fact, a lot higher which has major implications for the game and how much Japan is required to invest in repairs etc.
 
Japan has 1300 Oil in the Home Islands and in the Kuriles and Manchukuo/China under its control at the beginning of the game.
 
It has taken 420 Oil points in the Soviet Union, is about to finish capturing 475 in China and has gained 4,050 and 100 in Java. Palembang has 3,000 oil points but remains in my hands.

So,overall Japan now controls roughly 6,350 OIL points which is enough to run a HI of some 36,000. Obviously that's a pretty massive industry level but I hope he HAS expanded his HI as that will just make him run through his OIL reserves more quickly.
 
If I remove Java/Sumatra and Borneo from his control then what are we left facing? Just 2,200 OIL which is enough to run an economy of 13,200 HI. That's a sizeable war economy but all of that OIL in China and the Soviet Union is also within bomber range and so can be removed from play over time.
 
If he is reduced to just his Japanese oil then he is stuck with just 9,000 HI per day.

So, here's where the CAP is. What is really interesting for me is that this CAP is made up of 6 different units ( 3 x 27 land-based Zero daitai AND 3 x carrier Daitai - he has committed Kaga, Akagi and Zuikaku's fighter squadrons to this battle) and thus represents a committment of up to 135 Zeroes. My P-40Bs simply aren't up to the task of fighting these Zeroes off but the attacks are pressed home despite horrendous losses. 60 Allied planes and 14 Japanese Zeroes are downed but while I'm losing 55 and low 60 Exp pilots the Japanese are losing their 80 Exp pilots ( none of the Zero units committed to this battle had suffered much in fighting elsewhere and they began the game with Exp of 80 to 90 so they are, literally, the best of the best and they take a LOT of killing.

Japanese amphibious landings around Legaspi attempt to cut my counter-attacking troopsinto pockets. I've been waiting for this and am going to take a risk by sending a lot of B-26s and Beauforts in. Manilla's airfield is at 96% build to Level 4. With a little luck it might become Level 4 overnight and then my bombers will be able to carry torpedoes. Even if it doesn't build to Level 4 there will be enough of them to do some serious damage with level bombing attacks. I'll lose a few to ground attacks but I have replacements for my B-26s and Beauforts.

By the end of the day 165 Allied planes and 37 Japanese planes are downed. What is important though is that 27 of those Japanese losses were Zeroes and that's probably 20 or so 80 Exp pilots removed from his books which he is going to find difficult to replace. I'm going to consolidate my bomber squadrons somewhat and come back again in a couple of days time. In the meantime my high-altitude fighter bomber raids will continue.

As to why I'm willing to continue accepting these losses? Simple, I have P-39 units in reserve flying CAP over 3 of my most important bases but everything else in CONUSA is expendable AND in being expended it is trashing his IJN pilot and Zero pools which means that by accepting these heavy losses now I am reducing his pilot pool such that when I hit Java his ability to generate endless numbers of well-piloted Zeroes is going to be significantly lower than it would otherwise be. As of today in just 4 months of combat he has lost 561 Zeroes and well over 2,000 IJN-piloted planes.

In other news the invasion fleet is coming together nicely. By the time it makes for Java at the end of April ( just in time for a whole load of crated Buffalos to upgrade to Hurricanes for point defence ) it should comprise close to 100 warships and at least 200 transports and tankers ( the tankers are mostly there to refuel the warships quickly AND to absorb torpedoes and bombs which would otherwise be aimed at more valuable transports and warships.

Wow -- those are some eye-popping losses. A couple of questions: first, I note you sent in the P-40B's but not the P-39's for your fighter sweep. Is this because the P-40B's do better in A2A, or did you want to preserve the P-39's for strike missions? Second, do you have a fix on where those IJN CV's are?

Harlock, it is because the P-39s just die in droves. I think they have about a 20:1 exchange rate ( not in their favour ) against these Zeroes so using them in A2A where these top-rated Zero pilots are around is just out of the question. So, I'm just using them as extempore dive-bombers --- I initially tried to strafe with them but they achieved nothing.
 
As to IJN CVs:
Akagi, Kaga and Zuikaku have given their fighters to Prince Rupert. I believe that Shokaku is operating with the other 3 carriers and cruising in between Kodiak and Canada/Hawaii.
 
 
Yamato ( Japan's only CVA at the moment ), Hiryu, Soryu and a couple of the CVLs are operating around New Zealand/Caledonia.
 
And there should be a few raiding CVLs and CVEs in reserve around Hawaii or skulking around trying to kill my convoys somewhere.
 
So, I have a pretty good count on the locations of all 6 CVs, the CVA and 3 CVLs. I also have a good count on his BBs and CAs and from what I can see he has two committed to DEI, 2 Alaska and 2 elsewhere ( don't know where ). Since I'm bringing roughly 60 DDs, 6 BBs, 8 CAs and about 20 CLs or CLAAs ino Java I am confident of not only handily defeating his naval forces but also being able to withstand the attrition his Bettys and Nells will cause.
 
At present I have about 9 subs skulking off Java with elements of a Jat Regiment on board. I am going to hit Java with sub-based landings at all his coastal bases 2 or 3 days before I land... I will also hit some places in Borneo, Singapore and the Celebes so as to muddy the waters a bit. Basically though if he leaves something unguarded my sub-borne commandos can land and take it and then I will have options other than Teloekboetang ( which I'd like since it is only a Level 1 airfield and I need to get a couple of hundred fighters ashore immediately if I'm to provide enough CAP.
 
I'm loading up troops at Cochin and Madras and moving them to Sri Lanka. Once everything is ready there I will combat-load them and move south to meet up with the troops coming from Perth ( a LOT of tank units and also several more divisions of US and Australian troops ). It is looking as though I will be able to land 4,000 or so AV in the first wave with another 1,500 AV following in a second wave a fortnight later. I've also decided that if places in Borneo look weakly defended then I will commit several divisions to costly deep strikes in an effort to gain bases in Borneo before the full weight of the Betty and Nell terror can be brought to bear.

Just how much unloads from an AP or AK per phase ( or day )when it is unloading at an enemy-held base? Also, how much unloads when it is unloading at a friendly Level 3 or Level 4 base?
 
If Teloekboetang is still holding by the time my ships are loading for the invasion then I will just load most of my units as efficiently as possible BUT I will still combat-load maybe 3 or 4 divisions just to enable to me to grab some bases in Java and Borneo should the Japanese be unexpectedly weak. The problem is that my most efficient shipping is slow ( 1000 tonners at 12 knots ) while my fastest shipping ( 21 and 22 knot APs and AKs ) is also very large ( 6000 tonner APs --- essentially converted ocean liners and the like ) so if I really want to make a proper go of it I think I will have to combat-load onto the 1000 tonners but if I could unload 2,000 tons in 2 days then that would be viable also since I expect it to take quite some time for even the full weight of Jagdfluger's Bettys and land-based bombers to sink my merchants and warships ( purely because there are simply so many of them

)... Quantity has a quality of its own.

I'm seeing a lot of Claudes and Nates around. I can't help but wonder if his Zero pools are actually even worse off than I imagine? Well tomorrow he is bound to hit Chungking and when he does he will use Zeroes ( he has to ) BUT he is also going to hit other places in China --- or at least he should. If there are no other strikes then it is because he doesn't have the escorts to cover them AND can't afford to lose IJN and IJA fighter pilots flying Nates, Claudes and Oscars. If there are other strikes and they aren't covered by Zeroes but are covered by Oscars, Nates, Claudes etc then his Zero pools are low but his pilot pools aren't critical. If he can run two other strikes apart from the Chungking one with coverage by a Daitai of Zeroes then he is in good shape as regards pilots. Personally I think we'll see strikes covered by Nates and Claudes as I believe his pilot pools aren't critical but his supply of Zeroes is ( or at least it is reserved for rebuilding the units in CONUSA.

The most important thing about all of this base-swapping in China is that it is creating a desert zone of bases which have no resources and which will act as a drain on the forces trying to stage offensives PAST those bases. Hint: I won't be pushing offensives through that area [8D]... Again, its all shaping the battlefield for the battles 3 months from now ( which won't be anywhere near the current front line as I'm going to pull back and shorten my lines significantly thus increasing the benefit accruing to my interior lines.

I did a count today of what I have to bring into action around Java.... I am bringing all my MSWs, PCs, PGs etc since every torpedo which hits them saves an AK or a proper warship so bear that in mind when reading these figures:

For a total of 117 major warships. I also have an additional 2 British CVs and a British CVL. 2 US CVs are in the area but they won't enter the action, they will just hang back and fly army fighter squadrons into action the day I capture my first base.
 
In addition between AKs, APs, MSW, PCs etc I have an additional 280 ships. So, all in all just under 400 ships are going to hit Java just after May 1st 1942.... Why after May 1st? Simple, British squadrons can upgrade afer May 1st so by hitting AFTER May 1st I get to load up a load of Buffalo units and upgrade them to Hurricanes on the day I land them. With the addition of the two additional US divisions it is looking like I'll land quite close to 5,000 AV plus army, naval, air force HQs and a huge number of engineer units. With the 1,000 AV of armoured units I'm bringing I expect to clear Java pretty quickly.
 
After looking at the map a little I've decided it is essential to take Kendari ASAP. I think if I can take a couple of bases in Southern Borneo then I should be able to just pummel Kendari with B-17s and B-25s irrespective of loss and then take it and Amboina in order to protect my flank from Japanese attacks originating from Truk etc. .... and then KB and the CVLs + CVEs will enter the fray and I think we'll see some absolutely massive battles between my land bases and Japan's CVs, CVLs and CVEs as they try to cover counter-invasion fleets. The first counter-invasions will succeed --- one reason I'm trying to go so deep so quickly is to give myself some defensive depth but over time I think attrition will work in my favour.

VERY interesting. Nates and Ki-32s. It looks to me like while his pilot situation isn't disastrous his Zero pool is must be very low. Excellent. I need to keep the pressure on --- and take the losses that entails --- for the next month and hopefully it'll pay off in saving a lot of my shipping when I try to take southern Borneo by coup de main.

In other news: 26 planes destroyed = around 25 IJA pilots killed. Since Japan only gets 150 IJA pilots per month those 25 or so pilots are a big hole in his pilot pools.

Once again when defending a base the I-16 Type 24 proves itself able to take on Zeroes which are fatigued by a long flight. 7 more IJN pilots are killed but so are another 10 IJA pilots [:D]. Tomorrow I'm giving my Il-2s their first blooding. It'll be interesting to see how they do ( particularly if there is a little CAP there ). With their rear-firing MG and a replacement rate of 141 in May 42 ( currently 40 are being replaced per month but in May another 101 Il-2Ms are added to my monthly replacement pool ) I am considering using them in the face of heavy fighter CAP to not only get through and destroy enemy airfields but also to attrit enemy fighter squadrons.

He's testing my defences at Kunchang. He is flying in elements of several divisions and I can't hold him. It is time to retreat from Sian before i'm trapped. 2 more days and then I'm gone. In terms of the overall goal of destroying most resources in the bases he is capturing thus preventing him from marching overland to Chungking things are going very well. There's a virtual supply desert from Kaifeng westward.

Well here's the losses for today. I'm still on course to achieve a 5,000 : 3,500 kill ratio well before the end of the month.

Japan starts the war with 650 pilots. In 5 months ( to the end of April ) it train an additional 2,100. So, by the end of the month it will have trained 2,750 pilots. Assuming a 75% pilot loss rate per plane lost we are looking at roughly 2,700 pilots dead which means that by the time I land on 1st May Japanese pilot pools should be pretty much empty even if my figures are a little off ( since I expect we'll see quite a bit more than 3,500 Japanese planes destroyed by the end of the month ). Thus while Japan might be able to hit me hard initially they are just not going to have the wherewithall to continue doing so when I bring the meatgrinder of my 2,000+ level, torpedo and dive-bombers to bear throughout Java and Borneo.

I know I go on about this but I think that the value of this AAR isn't in my prose or a recounting of how "cool" the torpedo bomber strike was or anything like that. I think that its value lies in looking at the underlying logistics which underpin success long before the forces actually meet. Since the beginning of the game I'e been going out o my way to kill IJN pilots whenever possible almost irrespective of cost and now we're seeing the pay-off. But damn the cost was high.

Another major attack on Kweilin. Fully 112 fighters covered 38 Ki-32s. They were opposed by only 65 of my own fighters and thus the majority of the bombers got through killing quite a few of my planes on the ground. On the other hand jagdfluger had to send in Nates, Oscars and some of his rare Tojo IIs. The Tojo IIs did a pretty good job while the Oscars and Nates did reasonably well considering how obsolescent they are. I am interpreting the performance of the Nates and Oscars as meaning that they were flown by trained pilots as if they were just conscripts the Nates and Oscars wouldn't have had the ability to shoot down so many I-16 Type 24s. Still, 44 more IJA trained pilots are killed in return for 28 airframes. I can't replace those airframes but 44 pilots is almost 1/3rd of his monthly IJA pilot allocation and killing them in Nates and Oscars is infinitely easier than killing them when they are piloting Mikes and Tojos.

As usual even though the LaGG-3s were flown by poorer pilots they actually did more of the killing, proportionally speaking. I don't understand why jagdfluger is pouring planes into this air battle over Kweilin as it really isn't that essential. Still, while we obviously both have very different aims here I am quite happy to engage in an attritional battle which grossly favours me ( he is losing 50% more 60 Exp pilots than I am losing 40 Exp pilots. In essence I'm trading my lowest Exp replacements ( Soviet and Chinese pilots come in at 40 and 25 Exp respectively ) for 60 Exp IJA pilots and that's got to be a win for me.

jagdfluger promises me a surprise next turn. I have checked and am pretty sure it won't come from his land forces so I'm betting that he either has a major raid of Me-264s planned OR that he is going to sprint into range of one of my airbases and pummel it with a carrier strike. In other news Coal Harbour is now definitely open for business and bases roughly 90 Zeroes including 3 carrier daitai. He really is throwing the kitchen sink into this struggle at CONUSA.

Currently we have two major fronts of aerial combat and one subsidiary front:
1. CONUSA: a major front which has resulted in massive Allied and IJN aerial losses.
2. Burma: a front which is falling in importance as he has basically withdrawn from Tavoy and Rahaeng and only the occasional, extremely expensive, bombing raid is made against Rangoon.
3. China: a very subsidiary theatre for me but one which appears to be of greater importance to him. I will continue to bleed him there until my losses become excessive and then I will pull back to Burma and rebuild.

I think that the use of Nates, Claudes and Oscars in the front lines is a sign of production and pilot pool problems among the Japanese and so more than ever I believe that a sudden opening of a fourth front with the massive initial losses that will entail for both of us could be just what I need to completely deplete his pilot pools and push his forces over the edge. It really is a case of killing him just a little than he is killing me though [:D]

Interesting news today. I asked jagdfluger why so many Nates were being thrown into the battle over Kweilin and he told me that he was sending in 40 Exp Nate training units in order to get a few kills and replace the losses with 60 Exp pilots from his pilot pool. Hmm, if that's really what he's doing then why is he accompanying them with Zeroes and Tojos? He can't afford to throw those airframes away for free. Even if it is true I think it is a waste of pilots as with just a month of ground attack training these 40 Exp pilots would be close to 70 Exp and would be formidable if transitioned to Mikes.

Hmm, I'm glad I moved the Spitfires in. Today 157 Japanese fighters and 69 bombers took off to attack Kweilin. My 69 fighters managed to shoot down 70 of the attackers including half of the Nates, one-third of the Zeroes and half of the Tojos. I lost 43 planes in return but most of my losses are of I-16 Type 24s which I'm happy enough to lose so long as I can keep the pilots and refill them at a later date. The LaGG-3 losses are pretty painful though.

I asked jagdfluger why so many Nates were being thrown into the battle over Kweilin and he told me that he was sending in 40 Exp Nate training units in order to get a few kills and replace the losses with 60 Exp pilots from his pilot pool. Hmm, if that's really what he's doing then why is he accompanying them with Zeroes and Tojos? He can't afford to throw those airframes away for free.

With all due respect, I think he can afford to throw Nates away. The extra production capacity in this scenario, it seems to me, makes pilots rather than airframes the limiting factor. (Especially Nates rather than Zeroes or Mikes.) This sounds like a fast way of getting higher pilot experience -- possibly Jagdfluger thinks he can't spare a month's delay for training.

That said, something is fishy here. If your calculations about his pilot pools are anywhere near accurate, even 40 exp pilots would soon become a resource worth husbanding. Possibly the IJA pilot pools are in better shape than the IJN.

I tried to run another transport into Pearl with a view to resupplying it but the Japanese aerial cordon is too strong. For some REALLY weird reason none of my sub minelaying missions will lay mines anymore. They will load them up but NOT unload them. This is ridiculous and a really big thorn in the Allied side. Anyone have any ideas?

While this is being sorted out I'm going to run supplies into Pearl. I can deliver about 700 tons per run and make 2 runs a month so that should buy the garrison a little time. Supplies are currently at 26,000 tons and the AAA units continue to repair and rebuild so they can kill still more IJA and IJN pilots.

My forces are almost finished gathering. 3,500 AV are at Colombo with another 1000 AV on the way. In Perth another 1300 AV are ready to go. Add in the 2nd wave of 1800 AV or so of Chinese Field Armies and the first wave is going to muster about 5,500 AV ( right on target ) with another 1500 AV ready to reinforce it within the month. Add in the 1000+ aviation support, 600 or so engineers and all the FlAK and Field Artillery units and Java will, in no time, be fortified in a manner the Dutch could never even come close to. Then we'll have to see how jagdfluger reacts. D-Day is set for 3rd May 1942 and will be the largest amphibious invasion yet launched in history, dwarfing what the Japanese threw at the Allies in December 1941.

P.s. Harlock, I had a think about what you said and think you are right. I don't necessarily think that my plan to bleed his Nate pools is wrong ( Nates have a high altitude and can engage most of my high-flying bombers and the deceptive value in being able to use Nates for training into 1943 and 1944 thus preserving A6M2s and other obsolescent but eminently kamikaze-capable planes for 1945 ) BUT I do agree that the cost in airframes is too high. So I've decided to bring in Yak-1s ( 30some planes in the pool ), MiG-3s ( the best Soviet fighter at this point in the war ) and my Spitfires ( my best British fighters ) so that I can kill those pesky Nates at far less cost. We'll have to see how it works out.

And here's a weird result, The Japanese suffered MINUS 1 A2A loss. Gees, my pilots must really suck to actually resurrect Japanese pilots and planes for the dead.

A major nuisance and no mistake. Do your surface minelayers still work?

Looks like a well-planned counter-stroke. A pity we have to wait nearly another month of game time to see how well it works. It seems a bit gamey to have Chinese troops in the invasion force, but I imagine that with a sufficient bribe to Chiang Kai-Shek it could have been arranged.[:D]
