I count sections from all his CVLs and CVEs here. It looks to me like he has created 2 x CV TFs centred around the CVEs and CVLs. That's fine, my evacuation of Caledonia continues, I think the number o units there frightened him off.... but he isn't to know they are all fragments ;-)

Unfortunately my forces from Sri lanka have been slow forming up so the soonest the invasion can go in is about 12 days from now, almost 3 days late. Damn!!! Unless of course I just send the forces from Perth in first and follow them in at a remove of several days with the forces from Sri Lanka? The Perth forces can make landfall in Java in about 7 days which would leave the Sri Lankan forces well out to sea but steaming in very forcefully. The benefit of this is that with the Perth forces to grab a beachhead the Sri Lankan forces can land undisrupted. The downside is that the Perth forces have no organic air cover and only about 1500 AV. Hmm, probably best to wait even though it really cuts against the grain.

Any possibility he's just going to trade queens with you here e.g. if you move massively into java, won't that open up India to his attack? Which would leave java as an (unsuppliable) allied island in the midst of a japanese Indian ocean?

Seems like if I were to IJN I'd trade java for India without blinking an eye.

Well, I can't speak for Nemo, but I certainly wouldn't make that trade myself. Java not only holds a lot of oil & resources in & of itself, but could be a stepping stone for further offensives against Sumatra - Malaya - Borneo - Celebes. There's no sense in holding India if you can't ship those resources home.

It could also potentially end in the Philippines being relieved, which would make Nemo's opponent pay dearly for his decision to bypass them.

It's more aggressive, and risky, than I would play but it will certainly be interesting to watch.

Just how much unloads from an AP or AK per phase ( or day )when it is unloading at an enemy-held base?
I think it was 200 load points per phase, but don't take my word for it. Just recently someone posted a number, but the forum search isn't working ATM.

Generally 1000 load points of infantry from an AP per day. I've seen exceptions, however. It's probably better to plan on 800. 200 points of supply from an AK per phase. But no supplies will unload during the first invasion phase. Quirk of the game engine, I guess.

I tested this recently & posted some more details somewhere in this thread: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1603276

Pat,
Aye, that could happen BUT I'm betting that:
a) he won't be using Java as bait because he won't expect it to be counter-invaded in May 1942. As far as I know this has never happened in any game yet.

b) if he DOES intend to swap Java for India then he will find the 8 Chinese Armies I have in India ( which should mass about 4,000 AV in 2 months time ) a fairly bitter pill to swallow. PLUS I'm getting more UK, Indian and US reinforcements into India all the time. Basically I've estimated that worst case scenario I can hold Java for two months before pulling out and evacuating to India. At that time even if my forces are in bad shape I should have enough new forces in India to hold against almost anything he can throw against me.

c) if he does intend to invade India then he is going to have to sail past Sumatra and Palembang is going to make that costly if it is in my hands.

And lastly, war is risk. If I sit back forever then he will crush the Soviet Union and China. It is time to take some of the pressure off China and the Soviet Union.

This is the first raid of the war by Wellingtons. I wanted to see how they'd do since they have an armour rating of 2 in deference to their geodesic airframe structure. They aren't really much more survivable than anything else though so I think they'll just join my B-25s in massed daylight bombing raids when the time is right.

Well, I wanted to draw top-line Japanese fighters to China and now I've got to pay the price to keep them there. 37 Japanese fighters including 28 Mikes are downed at a cost of 31 Soviet fighters. I'll repeat this raid in a few days time in order to wipe out a few Mike units/draw others into China and away from Singapore etc just before I land in Java. The fewer experienced units he can rush to the area in the first few days of the landings the better for me.

Ah, I was wondering when these would show up. Unfortunately I overlooked the fact that Colombo had no CAP after I'd crated up the 200+ fighters I'm sending to Java and, consequently, this raid got in, did great damage, and got out at little cost.

The majority of my 48 planes destroyed on the ground were Vildebeests, Blenheims and Dauntlesses so it isn't a major loss for me as:
a) the Vildebeests are obsolete and due to upgrade to Beauforts in 1 week,
b) I have about 200 Blenheims in the pool and
c) I get about 40 Dauntless a month and have enough in the pool to get by.

Overall things are going well for the invasion except that my invasion convoys are stringing out as short-legged minesweepers are being refuelled and slowing down important TFs. Still, I don't mind straggling in over the course of 3 days as I think I have enough forces available to absorb the necessary losses.

ctangus,
FANGS OUT !!! When I used to play chess competitively the most frequent comment by bystanders was to wonder if anyone had told me that the tournament wasn't a "suicide chess" game [:D]. If I see vulnerability I tend to go for it, plus I'm very Soviet in that I just can't pass up the opportunity to pass an operational manoeuvre group into the enemy's operational depth. In this case Java is, hopefully, the gap and southern Borneo will be the operational objective.... So I think its warranted PLUS it'll be enjoyable and different and I don't play to win, I play to try different strategems and enjoy myself. Winning is not a requirement.

Certainly seems so! [:D]

It certainly does seem like a viable strategy. Particularly considering how spread out your opponent is - I suspect there's next to nothing in Java/Borneo. Maybe some infantry in Java that he hasn't shipped out yet. It's still more risky than I would play: major losses could cripple future operations for a good long time. But success would be catastrophic for Japan.

Wobbly did (unsuccessfully) try something similar against PzB, but he didn't commit nearly as much force.

How much supply are you bringing along? I'd personally want at least 200 - 300K for an op this big. Maybe a little more since your supply lines aren't secured.
So I think its warranted PLUS it'll be enjoyable and different and I don't play to win, I play to try different strategems and enjoy myself. Winning is not a requirement.[/b]

Win or lose, that's certainly the best reason to play the game.

Ah, I was wondering when these would show up.

That does seem to confirm your comment that it's better to launch your invasion of Java before the more anti-ship capable versions of the Me 264 come on-line. If they can reach Colombo they can very likely interfere with TF's from Indian ports. (Any idea where the strike came from?)
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Harlock,

I forget their exact range but even with torpedoes it is about 30 hexes. So, lots of options for really, really long-range havoc. One of my goals with them was to force the Allies in 1943 and 44 to properly escort their rear-echelon convoys. In any case hitting them before the torpedo-carrying Me-264s become available should really cut down my losses in the long run.

Hmm, another surface combat TF runs over the I-157. At least it didn't contain anything heavier than a DD so I've bluffed jagdfluger that this was an ASW TF looking for his subs. I can't bluff too much though or he'll know I consider this important. My ships are about 9 days out from their landing areas. I am considering giving them orders to close ASAP right now but will try to hold off for 2 days and see how any air transfers go.

In other news my British CVs have been spotted by C3Ns and D4Y Judy recon planes. This means that at least 2 enemy carriers are in the area. Well, that's the invasion well and truly torn. In response I have ordered my forces to split up and make maximum speed for the Javan coast. My carriers will draw enemy strikes onto themselves while my transports will try to make land and unload under the protection of my surface combat TFs. A whole load of Allied troops are about to drown over the next week but c'est la guerre.

In order to figure out just what I'm facing my sub-borne commando recons will land tomorrow. Java looks very lightly held and I've IDed a lot of troops which WERE in Java in China and the Soviet Union so I think that there can't be more than 2 to 3 Divisions in Java... and I think a significant portion of those 3 divisions is involved in his current offensive on outlying Sumatran bases meaning that they won't be available for the fighting on the main island.

I think that it is pretty certain I'm going to be succesful in my invasion but the cost of that success has just probably doubled ( as I'm sure he will begin shifting Bettys, Nells etc into the area tomorrow ). There should be a carrier battle tomorrow. I'm betting it'll be a draw with the Japanese inflicting more loss on my forces than they suffer BUT my own forces inflicting a bit of loss on the Japanese also and attriting them sufficiently that their attack wings won't be as easily able to savage my transports. After that it'll be a 4 day running battle to Teloekboetang ( in which my CVs, combat vessels and transports will suffer heavily to airstrikes ) followed by 2 to 3 days of naval battles as the Japanese try to disrupt the landings using Surface Combat TFs and a fortnight-long campaign to fully clear Java/Sumatra.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/27/42

Today was a day of heavy losses for both sides. Overall though I think that I probably came off the better.

I ordered my sub-borne commandos to go ashore today in several areas of the DEI in order to scope out the defences. Overall I found 3 or 4 BFs/Engineers per base and a few CD units but a major lack of any formed land combat units. Ooh, Java is looking like a bit of a walk-over.

Japanese Ships
CV Yamato
CV Junyo, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage My strike aircraft were expendable so I set my CAP to 90%. The end result was that the SBD-3s were totally slaughtered but because I sent my Albacores in low while my Dauntlesses went in high the CAP was split and 9 of my Albacores made it through.

Of the 9 that launched two managed to hit Junyo with torpedoes and it looks like Junyo is out of this fight. Yamato is still in and since she carries twice as many planes as Junyo ( about 100 ) she is still a massive threat.

The Japanese riposte comprises over 100 planes. 41 are downed short of the carriers but those that get through concentrate on CV Formidable leaving her a shattered wreck with system damage of 76. Fortunately fires and flooding are light so there's a chance she might be save if sh isn't attacked again.

4 Kates attacked and scored 4 hits on the Q-ship Anson.... Anson is a ship made to look like a BB but actually mounting only pom-poms. Her loss does hurt since she would convert to a BB in about 5 months time but right now she is merely a decoy, a decoy whose purpose is served.

The hits on the damaged Yorktown ( 42 sys damage from the high speed run to India + a sub attack ) and Indomitable aren't serious... but it sure makes it look like he's run into a major force... a much greater one than he actually has, IMO...

Ground combat at Kendari [Celebes]

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 145 troops, 7 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 9

Defending force 6 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

Kendari is almost abandoned, just a BF with some engineers.

Attacking force 622 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 19

Defending force 1514 troops, 23 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 79

Allied max defense: 78 - adjusted defense: 22

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese ground losses:
112 casualties reported

In response to how weakly Java is held I'm just ordering my convoys to make best speed and will take my losses. I have 5000+ AV 4 days out. Even if I lose 1/3rd I will have more than enough to take and strongly garrison Java and I doubt he can make me lose 1/3rd at this late stage even if he has just pretty much wiped out my CV CAP.

And here's a picture showing the losses for the day AND just what forces are present at Soerabaja and Kendari. Essentially nothing is there. It's a totally hollow shell.

In looking at the loss figures I am heartened to see the Japanese operational losses as those represent planes which could not land on Junyo because it was damaged AND which couldn't land on Yamato because it had reached its maximum number of planes. So, could this mean that Yamato has taken on its maximum number of planes and can no longer fly CAP??? Its an intriguing possibility. I won't bank on it BUT if it is so then that'll be helpful in reducing my casualties on the run-in.

In other news I am shuttling my B-17Es back into Burma. They should arrive in 2 days and will begin hassling the shipping and planes at Singapore then. B-25s are now basing into Rangoon with a view to flying into DEI once I have operational airbases. I am also transitioning USAAF units to P-43s which have the range to reach DEI from Rangoon and will fly them in. Additional USAAF fighter units are flying in from Northern Oz. Add in the British units which are transitioning to Hurris and Spits and Java will soon have a hell of a lot of fighters available as a defensive shield.

The second echelon reinforcements ( 2 weeks to 4 weeks post-invasion ) are also coming along nicely and are forming up in India and Australia as we speak.

So, cost so far of the invasion:
90 Allied planes and 1 x Q-BB ( Anson )

90 Japanese planes and heavy damage to Junyo.

Her's what Jadfluger asked me in his email accompanying the turn replay
" Here is the replay. My Nells and Bettys did not shoot very straight, but your AA gunners did. This is no spoiling raid, of course. You do intend to play the game until the end, right? This isn't going out with a bang before surrender?"

So, obviously this is making no sense to him - which is good ;-).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/29/42

LOL! He's taking Emouth just north of Perth. Well, that's fine. He can hold Emouth while I hold Java and prevent any reinforcement or resupply. Plus it'll be a good bomber training target.

I thought I'd take a chance on rushing some big 22 knot 5,000 ton APs into Teloekboetang. It didn't work out too well for me. The DD & DMS escorts were ignored and the APs took multiple torpedoes.

90 Japanese planes attack but only 35 or so could be said to be modern. The rest are, at best, obsolescent. This is a good sign for me.

Bettys and Nells join in putting multiple torpedoes into already damaged DDs. Importantly though while they are killing these hapless DDs my 50,000 troops on the actual invasion convoy are getting a free ride.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 18,63

Well all in all today went well. I have lost a CL and about 12 DDs but I have over 120 combat vessels committed to this attack in addition to another 250 transports and with only another 6 days or so before most of my offloading is finished it looks like there just won't be enough planes to generate a sufficiently high rate of attrition of my transports before they have finished unloading.

Empires Ablaze - Keeping sharks in chum since December 7th 1941.

I've renamed the post header in honour of your observation.

I'm reminded a bit of the Aliens vs Predator tagline. "Whoever wins, humanity loses." [:D]

We should be getting 1 more turn in tonight and then, hopefully, tomorrow we'll get 3 or 4 done and progress things along to the point of me having a foothold.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/30/42

And things really hot up now. Massive losses for both sides although the Allies are getting considerably harder wear than the Japanese. Still, my forces are grinding on and I've brought enough that they should be able to land and take some important bases. It looks as though my budget 33% loss before I even land is going to be pretty close to the money. OUCH!!!

Allied naval forces engaged in several naval battles and, uniformly, were slaughtered. This is most discouraging

Transports at Singapore... It looks to me like he is frantically flying divisional fragments FROM Singapore to Java in order to bolster his defences there. Sure he'll be able to ly in 400 or 500 AV before I can finish unloading but I've brought enough that that won't stop me. It will, however, make Singapore pretty damned vulnerable. 42 enemy torpedoes strike home and in so doing gut this fleet. I will strip out the damaged ships, abandon them to their fate and press on. One must always pay the price for closing with one's enemies. This is the price I pay and, to be fair, it is an acceptable one.

My first recaptured base in Java. EXCELLENT!!! The airfield is damaged and the port is almost out of action entirely BUT I can fly in 30 fighters, get some aircover and bring the rest of my transports in under the cover of my surface combat TFs and, in a couple of days time, a strong BB component. The next 3 days will decide this as the Japanese are bound to throw EVERYTHING at me here. I expect to see major surface battles and absolutely massive aerial assaults ( which will, initially, succeed in closing the airfield but which will be pushed back as my engineers unload and begin being able to repair the field more quickly than the Japanese can bomb it.

And here's what we've got facing eachother at Teloekbetoeng --- well, what we HAD before I captured it [:D]. Note the large number of Japanese surface combat TFs east and west of Java which he is going to have to throw into Teloekbetoeng to stop me. We're going to both suffer absolutely horrendous ship losses over the next 2 days. It'll be the decisive surface battle the Japanese wanted but not under nearly the circumstances they wanted.

And here's the day's losses. Over half of my daily losses came from 4 squadrons on board transports which sank. Such is life, my fighter strength at Java is going to be greatly reduced at this rate. Not good, not good at all BUT I've already made plans to allow for just such losses and now those plans ( costly as they will be ) will be put into action.
