Can't complain about a lack of action in this AAR! Except in one area: we haven't heard much from the Allied CV's since the first engagement. Are their bomber squadrons pretty much wiped out?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Carrier Battle Off Java April 42.

Post by Nemo121 »

Another bloody day in which my naval forces continue to bleed by the bucketload in order to deliver my men and planes to the beaches. I also attack at Malang in order to secure a crucial Level 4 airfield from which I can begin projecting real interdictive power. Jagdfluger is pouring reinforcements in and right now what looks like the entire IJN and every plane they can spare are making their way to Java and Sumatra.

Interestingly Jagdfluger went for easy kills with the Kirishima battlegroup. I expect that is because it is now only a shadow of itself with 4 DDs where there were 13 and 1 CA where there were 3. Well,if he is happy doing that while I unload 3,500 AV at Teloekbetoeng then that's fine by me.

He's only sinking cripples here. Sure it hurts me but when you are unloading 300,000 men you can take these sorts of losses, especially since I'm getting fragments of most units ashore so can rebuild them.

More IJN Surface Combat TFs come into view. I confidently expect them to be hurled at Teloekbetoeng sooner rather than later. Once there they will battle my defending battleline and mutual annihilation will result. The difference is that I can replace my losses while Japanese losses really cannot be replaced --- certainly not in time to escort the necessary counter-invasion convoys for the retaking of Java/Sumatra.

The first enemy fighter sweep over Teloekbetoeng takes place. It features CLAUDES!!!! [X(][X(][X(] Jagdfluger has been telling me he is having trouble with the Japanese economy. I think he expanded too quickly and now he appears to have run out of HI reserves. This has resulted in much of his production in the Home Islands being stopped. What he needs to do is create a HI reserve of 10,000 or so and then he will begin producing stuff again. I've given him hints but I won't tell him straight out as his lack of production gives me a fighting chance over Palembang.

IJN carrier-based torpedo bombers basing out of CVs lurking just east of Java strike home with their torpedoes. The land-based Bettys and Nells are exhausted and their performance is falling. The carrier-based units are fresh and much more dangerous --- although their effectiveness will fall as their fatigue climbs.

This convoy is a bit of a decoy. Sure fuel would be useful BUT tankers also draw fire and so they were sent in to draw fire from the APs and AKs. Expensive but useful PLUS I actually do need the FUEL they will unload.

So, so far so good. We're shaping up to have a massive naval battle at Teloekbetoeng. Jagdfluger should win it BUT once he does so he will be unable to fight off my 2nd BB TF. In addition it looks like I may be able to begin advancing on Soerabaja and Batavia in the next couple of days and if either of those falls then I think Java will surely fall sooner rather than later. It has cost me awfully high casualties though but I think it'll prove worth it PLUS it has been a lot of fun to try [:D]

RE: Carrier Battle Off Java April 42.

Post by Nemo121 »

Well here's the situation at Teloekbetoeng. Right now it looks fairly catastrophic with a large number of damaged ships in the port, FAR too little supply and a whole load of troops who are going to run through what supply there is far too quickly. In addition the number of planes available is far too few to do anything worthwhile.

The reality is a bit different though. I have another 1500 or so AV due to land bringing my AV at Teloekbetoeng to roughly 4000 AV and I don't see how jagdfluger can bring in enough troops to hold Batavia against 3,500 AV shock attacking with battlefield and bomber support. Once Batavia falls all of Java will follow in a week.

In terms of aerial forces I am in the process of flying 50 x Chinese P-43s in from Rangoon via Djambi ( they will LRCAP Palembang next turn in order to try to kill a few Ki-32s ). I am also flying 3 squadrons of US fighters in to Java via Palembang ( and have reserves of some 160 P-40s ).

Once I have sufficient supplies at Teloekbetoeng the units currently there can dispose of:
32 Spitfires,
16 Hurricanes,
32 Avengers ( the Albacores can upgrade to Avengers )
25 Seafires/Seahurricanes
19 SBD-3s,
21 F4F4s.

So, that's 94 excellent fighters and about 50 attack aircraft which can operate from a Level 2 airfield.

Tomorrow the Yorktown ( 49 system damage and lurking about 20 hexes from Teloekbetoeng ) will try to fly in 32 Kittyhawks and another 3 sections of Albacores ( which will all upgrade to Avengers also ). So, by tomorrowmy potential strength at Telok will be over 125 fighters and 80 attack aircraft PLUS 50 Chinese fighters PLUS 72 US Army fighters. That ought to suffice to put up a very respectable CAP while I build a Level 4 airfield and bring in major number of long-range torpedo bombers in order to prevent Japanese shipping from interfering with my future plans.

Jagdfluger REALLY needs to begin hitting the airfield at Teloekbetoeng right now. If he gives me 4 days I'll have a Level 2 airfield and 100 fighters on CAP and he simply can't stand against that. To be fair though hitting that airfield will be costly as I've prepared to defend against airfield strikes by bringing along NINE AAA Regiments ;-). That gives me a LOT more defensive firepower than PH has on December 7th and we all know what that can do to KB when it strikes.

Oh and for those wondering: Yes, I have landed some 90,000 troops but I have another 90,000 troops and over 110,000 tons of supplies still to land. I'm definitely here to stay.

The situation at Malang looks worse but, in reality, it is pretty good. I have 500 AV of troops sitting in good defensive terrain with a Level 4 airfield. Tomorrow I unload a Dakota unit and can begin flying in Aviation Support troops to allow me to operate the field at full efficiency and over the next 3 days I will bring in over 80 more fighters from Australia. My bombers are also begin to stage in nearby bases with a view to flying in once my CAP has secured the airspace over the airfield.

The weakest point here is the lack of engineers and CAP at the moment which continues to leave my shipping vulnerable to enemy attack while I wait for my CAP to gather its strength. So, there will be continued heavy losses at Malang for the time to come but that's the cost of waging war.

1. This scenario is available on AKDreemer's site IIRC but I will be releasing an update with the lessons learned so far once this battle finishes.

2. My CVs: Well Yorktown got sunk this turn as it tried to get into range to fly Kittyhawks into Teloekbetoeng. Ah well, c'est la vie. 3 other CVs ( plus Formidable ) are making for Colombo. 1 other CV is in the repair docks while another has just finished flying fighters etc into Oz en route to Malang. So far I've lost 3 US CVs, 2 in the first couple of days of the war when KB ambushed them and, now, Yorktown.

Overall this landing so far looks to have cost me about 100 ships which is roughly 1/4 of the force committed and pretty much in line with what I was expecting. Overall I think I'm going to end up landing about 4,500 of the 5,000 AV I loaded up which is actually significantly better than I was expecting.

Ok, an ASW TF at Soerabaja eh? So, this makes it even more likely that the enemy heavy ships are at Batavia. I wil re-organise my surface forces and go in after them tonight. If I can smash his surface combat forces I am going to seriously cripple the IJN for years to come no matter what else happens with this invasion. To this end I've re-organised my surface fleet into a 4 BB, 3 CA, 1 CL + 17 DD surface TF and a multiple CL + DD TF comprising another 25 ships. Overall 50 Allied ships are going to raid the waters around Batavia and try to sink all Japanese shipping there.... with that done I can choose to bombard Batavia or sit tight and defend my own unloading shipping tomorrow night.

Hmm, time to abandon the AKs at Malang to their fate. Tomorrow the surface fleet makes for Teloekbetoeng with a view to replacing the losses I am bound to suffer overnight. The AKs and APs will follow as they finish unloading. The Japanese will get to massacre these lone ships but while they are doing that I will finish unloading at Teloekbetoeng and the ground steamroller will begin to move... and that will be the key to this entire campaign.

Overall yesterday I had 2300 AV at Teloekbetoeng. Today I have over 2900. Tomorrow I expect to be over 3500 and to topoff at just under 4,000 AV. I also have over 500 Engineers and about 1200 aviation support points --- which are helping me to repair my fighters at a really rapid clip.

Tonight my surface fleet goes into action around Batavia. If the Japanese come into action at Teloekbetoeng then I will pay dearly for this. If today is the day that they don't go into action at Teloekbetoeng ( and I think they will need at least 1 more day to re-organise their TFs in order to ensure they can survive against my BBs ) then I think my surface fleet is going to crucify whatever is around Batavia, return to Teloekbetoeng and then in 2 days I'll return with a massive bombardment effort. Obviously though he is going to try to intervene with his carriers first.

I have also flown 200 bombers into Manilla with a view to seeing if I can catch any reinforcement convoys on the way to Java. With a bit of luck I might catch a couple and cause him some more hurt.

Carnage, GOOD!!!  Its fun to play as the Allies where you can lose 150 ships and still win a strategic victory. If I take Batavia then I win, if I don't then I've just landed 5,000 AV into a huge prison camp ;-).

Jagdfluger seems to think he has this battle in the bag but I think he is overlooking the fact that so long as I win the ground war I can lose the naval and air battles (and I will definitely "lose" them in the tactical and operational senses -although a draw is as good as a win for me in the naval area ).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/05/42

Well if yesterday was carnage then today was a hollocaust. Over 200 planes are shot down just over Teloekbetoeng, we have a major battleline clash outside of Java and Japanese reinforcement convoys get butchered around the Phillipines. In addition it looks like several carriers are going to make a raid on Sri Lanka --- which my B-26s are preparing to meet [:D]

As you can see my surface combat TF significantly outmassed the enemy force and quickly gained the upper hand. Kongo was quickly hit by several 15 inch shells and Kirishima took one herself. Most of the DD hits were with 6 or 8 inch shells with the smallest hits being by 5 inch guns ofmy secondary armaments. In return my own ships were only hit by 5 or 5.5 inch shells and suffered no damage. I chose my SC TF leader with care to make sure he wouldn't close to 2,000 yards and was rewarded by a battle fought at between 9,000 and 7,000 yards where all of my advantages were at a maximum.

A couple of IJN DDs are savaged in this roun in return for a torpedo hit on the Louisville. No matter, my goals for the evening are achieved and tomorrow I will return with a major bombardment of the enemy base. I have two replacement BBs about to reach Teloekbetoeng and several replacement DDs so at this stage I can afford to lose half the current battleline ( without long-term diminution in ability ) in return for a 2 day respite of the bombing of the airfield at Teloekbetoeng... which will see it become a Level 2 airfield and perfect base for hordes of eminently replaceable Avengers.

Well, he's jumping around with the basing of his Zeroes and Bettys etc but I'm able to cover most of the likely bases with B-17 raids and he has so few engineers available that a few good raids does seem to close the fields down. Interesting.

This is contrasted with the situation in Teloekbetoeng in which I have over 500 engineers and even in spite of bombing raids today my airfield level increased from 43% to 56%.

Well, a major Japanese air raid went in and was only very lightly mauled since:
a) my Chinese P-43 pilots are pretty poorly experienced,
b) I don't actually have a lot of planes available ( except for the ROCAF planes which are pretty poor ) and
c) my AAA Regiments are out of ammo --- thus not doing much shooting.

I've checked the AAA Regiments for today though and almost all 9 are at 95%+ strength and with full supply so I expect that tomorrow's raid is going to be hit very, very hard in terms of FlAK. I also have almost 20,000 tons of supply available and tomorrow should have 20,000 tons so with just a little luck I could begin converting squadrons to Hurricanes, Spitfires and P-40Es and Bs and putting up a much more effective CAP.

In addition, tomorrow, about 35 carefully husbanded Dauntlesses will fly into Davao from northern Australia and try to strike any convoys which try to run south of the Phillipines. I can get one more day of good strikes before the enemy reaction becomes too strong to weather.

If I can destroy the enemy surface fleet at Batavia and get a Level 2 airfield at Teloekbetoeng then these transports aren't going to be able to unload at Batavia and my plan will begin coming together nicely.

The main things to notice about this picture are as follows:

1. The presence of three strong SC TFs at Teloekbetoeng.
The first comprises the 4 BBs, 2 CAs and a couple of CLs, the second comprises 4 CLs and 21 DDs while the third comprises 1 CL and 19 DDs.

2. The number of ships in Teloekbetoeng harbour either repairing or just waiting for the right opportunity to sprint out past the waiting IJN CVs ( which are lurking out west ).

3. The amount of supply which has gone up from 3,000 tons last turn to over 17,000 tons this turn. By tomorrow I should have well over 20,000 tons and be able to upgrade multiple squadrons to Spits, Hurricanes, P-40Bs and Es.

4. 173 planes present. That number is going up and up in spite of my heavy losses. I don't see massive numbers of IJA and IJN planes entering the fray.

It is going to be horrifically bloody but if Batavia falls in the next week then this is all over.

RE: Carrier Battle Off Java April 42.

Post by Nemo121 »

I'm still looking at the next turn but suffice it to say that even for us this was a pretty horrid turn. 2 of my BBs are doomed, between us we've lost 350 planes today and Jagdfluger's comment pretty much summed it up "Today's carnage tops it all". I'll post the results once I get my next turn orders out.

That's what jagdfluger had to say after seeing this turn.

Damn, 37 Allied planes destroyed in return for just 6 Zeroes, that's not good. On the other hand my Spitfires and Seafires are AWESOME. My leading ace is a Seafire pilot at Teloekbetoeng who has 27 kills to his credit. Every day he kills another 3 or 4 Japanese planes.

None of the Japanese bombers are home. I wonder where they've gone? Rangoon is the answer and they CRUSH my B-17s with an entire day's worth of concentrated attacks.

That's an entire Sentai of Mikes butchered in return for the loss of only 2 modern Allied planes. About 50% of my pilots survive to fight another day, very few of the IJA pilots will.

By day's end Rangoon is completely closed for business. To do so, however, has cost Jagdfluger one precious day in which Teloekbetoeng can be repaired and in which its fighter force can be brought up to strength. By day's end Teloekbetoeng is at 77% to a Level 2 airfield. It should take 2 more days for this to become a Level 2 airfield at which time my Il-2s and Avengers will really enter the fray.

He's having a look at Changsha but I doubt he can bring 5,400 AV to bear anytime soon, especially since he's going to have to bring a lot of forces into Borneo to hold me there OR into the Phillipines in order to take Manilla. He simply cannot afford to allow me to mount the sort of butcher raids I've been running out of Manilla recently.

If you look at Teloekbetoeng you can see it has LESS supply than it did last turn. This is simply because it has finished giving much-needed supplies to all the ground units based there. From tomorrow any supplies landed will go straight into the base itself. It should be well over 20,000 tons by tomorrow and then most of my fighter units will auto-upgrade and become much, much more formidable.

Interesting, these ships are obviously too badly damaged to move right now. He will move them the instant my troops enter the hex so the trick is going to be having a Level 2 airfield in operation so that my strike aircraft can attack them when he does try to run them to Soerabaja.

I believe that, at present, he isn't going to try to take all of Oz. Instead he is going to encircle it and IF he sees an opportunity, take Perth in order to cut off the flow of men and supplies from CONUSA to the Indian theatre. Unfortunately for him I am determined to hold the Perth area and am willing to lose most of the rest of Oz in order to do so.

I will stay here in Manilla another day, inviting heavy bomber losses, in order to be sure to draw enemy bombers away from Teloekbetoeng at this crucial juncture. Tomorrow my fighters UPGRADE to P-40Es, P-40Bs, P-39Ds, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Sea Hurricanes and Seafires. When this happens I will have ZERO planes capable of CAP and can be utterly destroyed on the ground IF he hits me with raids on that day. So, I'd rather lose 100 bombers at Manilla than 100 fighters at Teloekbetoeng tomorrow. Since tomorrow will mark my third day at Manilla I expect it to be hit really, really hard. I'm also hoping that by being there I will ensure a fourth day of raids buying my forces at Teloekbetoeng a bit of a rest.

So, how long can Japan which trains roughly 12 new pilots per day sustain the loss of roughly 100 planes ( and about 75 to 80 pilots ) per day? THAT is the question which will determine this battle.

My hat's off to you, Nemo: I wouldn't have the stomach for these kind of losses. Still, it's nice to see something besides the Sir Robin defense actually work!
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

THIS is highly significant. These Kates are from the Musashi's Bomber Daitai... That means that Jagdfluger has managed to get his second CVA into action - these are absolutely mammoth ships with the pick of the crop in terms of pilots. Thats 54 x 90Exp Kates and Vals and 42 x 90 Exp Zeroes Jagdfluger has just gotten for free and can now throw into the battle... and just after I'd finally worn the Yamato's strike groups down to uselessness. Well, I'll lose 100 planes and 20 ships doing it but I'll wear Musashi's groups down also. Its the cost of doing business.

How interesting, Soerabaja can muster 770 AV. It is in clear terrain and won't have major fortifications so my 3,000 or so AV should be able to walk over the defenders relatively easily. Barring any massive unforeseen complications ( such as a massive Japanese reinforcement convoy ) I am now pretty confident that Java will fall to my forces.

As to the massive reinforcement convoy --- well, that's pretty much what I have just butchered over the past few days in the Phillipines sea.

Japanese max assault: 0 - adjusted assault: 0

Allied max defense: 134 - adjusted defense: 154

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 3)

I do expect Jagdfluger to try to invade Palembang if he can't hold me at Batavia ( which he won't ) so I have 250 AV heading for Palembang in order to bolster the defences there. With woods, Level 3 forts and 400 AV I think they can hold out handily against 1,000 AV should he try to invade.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Batavia [Java]

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 92 troops, 4 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 39

Defending force 11 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2

And here you can see the situation around Java. IJN CVs cut off the SLOCs to the west while IJN reinforcement TFs are still running down the west coast of Borneo but with Teloekbetoeng becoming a Level 2 airfield this turn AND my fighters upgrading AND Jagdfluger not attacking it today I think things are swinging my way and those TFs will soon stop.

There are a lot of TFs picking up troops from China and trying to make for either Java or the Phillipines so I'm going to fly in Beauforts, B-25s etc into China in order to butcher more of those transports.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/09/42

I think Jagdfluger must be getting low on fighters as he is starting to comment that I must be low on them [8D]. I have 900 front-line fighters either in Java or in reserve to be committed. After that I have nothing. I think 900 should be more than enough though as he hasn't shown me more than 200 fighters in total over Java --- and with Batavia about to fall he's going to have to rely on Zeroes to escort his strikes on Teloekbetoeng which should reduce my A2A losses considerably as Mikes are real killers.

So, 1 day's peace and quiet allowed me to repair 58 fighters. Only 32 of them would be clasified as front-line fighters but the others are still useful in making up the numbers and getting the occasional kill here and there. At the very least they will tend to break up enemy bomber formations a bit and reduce the damage caused by bombing.

So he loses 1/4 of his Zeroes and 10% of his bombers but he manages to wipe out most of my CAP. Importantly though if you look at the end result of the strike he only scored 37 bomb hits from 127 bombers. That's a pretty poor return on investment so I think my FlAK and fighters have done their job in putting the bombers off.

*chuckle* I managed to kill 8 Ki-32s on the ground at Batavia. Soon I think I may convert one of these Il-2 units to Pe-2s and then a true reign of terror will begin over Soerabaja. Several 500Kg bombs per plane will do a lot of damage to any damaged IJN ships ported there.

So, by day's end I'm down to no fighters in the air again. Overnight I will repair what I can and then send them up to fight again. This is truly attritional warfare, fortunately my pockets are deeper PLUS the ground combat is going to be decisively in my favour.

CL Manxman, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage

IIRC the Manxman was a cruiser-minelayer capable of 40 knots. A pity to lose such a ship -- or was she a different model in this scenario?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Yes, Manxman is useful but unfortunately an error in the database made it unusable for me as a minelayer... So, it just performed as a very weak CL and, as such, was sacrificable. I have fixed this error in the next version of the mod.

The disbanding of my surface combat TFs in port will bring the IJN surface combat TF that has been waiting just a few hexes away into play tomorrow. I can JUST about form up two major surface combat TFs if I bring some lightly damaged ships together. So be it, the Royal Navy and US Navy BBs are going to die at Teloekbetoeng tomorrow. The only question is what they'll take with them.
