AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/12/42

The battlelines clash again. This has to be one of the most concentrated series of surface naval battles I've seen in an AAR. Losses continue to mount. I seem to be losing my heavy units first while the Japanese are losing their light units at a rapid rate.

The second round of combat saw one Japanese CA and 7 DDs culled from the herd. Not all have sunk by any means BUT they are no longer available for offensive action or bombardments and as I advance toward Soerabaja and they have to run for the Celebes etc I will have further opportunities to sink them.

What can I say? Losses continue to be massive for both sides. Jagdfluger just lost 26 planes and probably almost as many pilots. I've lost well over double that in planes but fewer than that in terms of pilots. My reserves are much deeper but they aren't endless. Still, I have 40 Pe-2s in reserve and 40 at the front, I have 120 A-24s in reserve, about 60 SBD-3s in reserve, several hundred Avengers and at least 50 P39s, P-40Bs, P-40Es, Kittyhawks, hurricanes etc.

Today Jagdfluger's plane losses so far topped 5,000.We are basically 5 months into the game and he has lost 1,000 planes per month each month of the war. He can't sustain that. I can barely sustain it so I really doubt he can.

After retiring what remains of my BBs to port to repair and recuperate I form another SC TF under my best available SC leader. It performs remarkably well against a much stronger force.

One of my men stubbed his toe while racing to unfurl the victory flag but that's the extent of the damage done to my TF.

A second IJN TF comes into view and while it deals out some damage the 8 inch shells from the Australia deal the Haruna some very serious blows. She is out of this war for at least the next 3 or 4 months. At best these two TFs can muster half of their strength after tonight's battles. Tomorrow I will take my losses from the Betty and Nell strikes and then we'll see who can really be called th winner of tonight's actions.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/14/42

Well, today I guessed that he would attack the resources at Batavia and so I flew in loads of bombers in order to pummel his retreating forces. In the replay this worked fine and several DDs, the CA Myoko and Haruna ( as well as a couple of transports ) were sunk. Unfortunately we're out of synch and in Jadfluger's verison of events my planes were clouded in while his weren't. End result a MASSIVE loss of bombers on the ground in Batavia and the DDs, CA and BB escape.

Never underestimate the random factor.

And here's the situation around Java. The red box shows the location of CVA Yamato, CV Hiyo and several supporting CLAAs etc. The red arrows show the locations of IJN SC TF components as they stream back towards Soerabaja and Tjilitjap.Tjilitjap will, I think, prove a very temporary respite for them but Soerabaja will take at least a week to close with.

So, all in all things are going reasonably except or my inability to really achieve aerial parity... obviously as the number of my airfields increases and the number of enmy airfields in the region falls this will change but, right now, it is still annoying.

When it comes to SC TF at night, the Japanese will probably have the advantage for the foreseeable future. To bad you could not have had more in daylight.
 
Quick Question - Do any of your B-17's come with AP load outs (6 1000lb AP vs 12 500lb GP) that other RHS scenarios have?? I'm about to find out how effective they are against large capital ships. [:D]

he's doing this to keep these forces pinned in place. It is as gamey as hell but within the rules of our game.

If you're talking about his having Japanese troops in the area, that doesn't seem gamey at all to me. Suicidal attacks to slow an enemy advance have been known to happen in warfare (see the charge of the 1st Minnesota at Gettysburg). And surely Japanese troops are used to being used as cannon fodder for the Emperor.

I made a mistake this turn. I was so focussed on getting my ships into the Level 6 port of Batavia that I moved before my AAA was in place and Jagdfluger mounts a massive number of port attacks. My ship losses redouble. Ah well, 3 days of losses like this and my AAA will be in place. In the meantime I'm going to use the time to try to build a solid core of 100+ fighters with which to contest the air once I get a nice relatively undamaged Level 4 airfield.

Well, I still have quite a few undamaged transports and DDs but the vast majority of my force is now damaged and stranded in Batavia until such time as I can provide a good CAP and/or FlAK cover. That'll be quite some time from now so over the next week my ship losses are going to spike upward yet again.

Well here's the situation for the day. Overall we lost about 180 planes altogether with the losses being relatively evenly split. A quick count shows roughly 44 IJN pilots going down with their planes ( out of a monthly total of 216 ( so that's about 1/5th of their monthly pilot production gone in a day ) ) and about 30 IJA pilots going down with their planes ( again 1/5th of their monthly production of 150 trained pilots ).

I just don't see how he can keep taking this kind of loss rate. If it continues at even half this rate then by month's end he'll need another 525 pilots but will only have received 180. How can this discrepancy be sustained??? I'd pay a LOT to know what his pilot reserve situation was right now but, in war, intelligence is always worth a lot..

Tomorrow I abandon Batavia to its fate and try to bring my fighter force up to a core of 100 fighters. I will also take Bandoeng and rest my infantry forces in Batavia such that they can proceed own the eastern railroads at a good pace over the next few days and close forcefully on Soerabaja.

No, no special loadouts on the B-17s. Just ordinary 500lbers.

As to how I plan to get through shark-infested waters? Well, I just expect that the IJN CVs in the area will not be able to maintain a cordon sanitaire once I have all of Java and most of the important bases in Sumatra. In the long run I plan to bring my supplies in via Tjilitjap which is pretty far from Singapore and fairly sheltered. If the IJN tries to intervene then they will either have to run the gauntlet of the Singapore straights ( under the guns of Rangoon and Palembang ) OR move south via Kendari ( which is why Kendari is a phase 2 target ).

With Batavia, Soerabaja and Bangka island in my hands I should be producing about 30,000 tons of supply per month on the island which ought to suffice to supply the island with the supplies it requires.... especially when topped up supplies from India and Oz sneaked in. My main worry now is that he will begin hitting the supply centres at Batavia, its what I would do.

Basically it all hinges on the fact that as the number of Japanese-occupied airfields falls and the number of Allied airfields increases the Japanese will have to spread their attacks thinner and thinner so that, in the end, I'll be able to provide proper CAP at one of my important bases and use that as a base to bomb their base into oblivion. Once it is bombed into oblivion I can fly enough B-17s, B-25s, SB-2Ms, B-24s, Wellingtons and Blenheims etc in to keep it closed and once it is closed I will be able to fly my torpedo-bombers in and turn Java into a torpedo-bomber infested no-go zone for the IJN.

It is taking a damn sight longer and costing me a lot more than I had hoped BUT I still think Java is going to be all-Allied ( except or Soerabaja ) by the end of the month and be a major base for my power-projection by mid-June.

I'll need to make one more hugely costly leap into Borneo but once that's done I just can't see enemy forces being able to bring the necessary OIL back to Japan and without that OIL Jagdfluger's really impressive war economy collapses. At the very least he is being forced to siphon troops away from China, Oz and CONUSA in order to reinvade Java --- and by month's end he'll see the second punch I'm about to land when some 2,500 AV of Chinese troops go charging into Thailand looking to occupy Bangkok and threaten the Malaysian peninsula [:D]. Do I expect it to "work"? No, but I'll just air-evac them back into Burma and Sumatra and re-use them when their position becomes untenable. In the meantime I'll have bought more time ---- as a side-note. 2 more divisions of troops have appeared at Aden since this battle has begun so as this continues my Indian defence is actually getting stronger yet again [:D]

Thanks for the feedback. In your next update for Empire's Ablaze, I would suggest that a few (you decide) B-17's get to carry 6 x 1000lb AP vs 12 500lb GP. I'm play RHSRAO and I have a few squadrons now with the AP bombs (1 B17-D is waiting for more E/F models before it upgrades to them). It could be a nice little surprise for the Japanese warships. Actually that's a really good point. A couple of B-17 squadrons outfitted that way surely would be useful. Thanks for the feedback.

Jagdfluger and I have been discussing the game so far privately in terms of balance etc. He thinks that the balance is just about right but I'm not so sure. I think that the early war Allies could do with a few units which have special abilities on an individual level and thus can create some tactical balance without interfering with the strategic balance. The B-17 idea is a great example of this but I'd be interested in what other ideas people have for strengthening the early war Allies a LITTLE in a manner which doesn't screw the strategic balance too much. Here's my thinking so far.

1. Each CONUSA city gets a fully prepped, large "militia force" assigned to it. This would simulate national guard and ex-soldiers etc being pressed into service. Experience would begin very low but would quickly ramp up IF the Japanese landed. Coal Harbour and Alaska would be included in this ( although their garrisons would be smaller ).

2. I plan to leave the IJN pilot replacement levels as they are as in 1941 and 42 those levels are good enough in most games ( Jagdfluger is assigning trained pilots to his fighter units and untrained pilots to his bomber units, relying on unopposed bomber missions to train them up ). In 1943 and 44 as the number of Allied fighters increases massively these numbers are unlikely to suffice.

3. I am going to make US CVs respawnable again. Currently they are unrespawnable and I think that just cripples the Allies too much in this scenario as they MUST suffer heavy CV losses in 1942 if they do anything aggressive at all.... and I don't want to force a Sir Robin.

E.g. in this scenario all IJN BBs upgrade to CVAs on January 1st 1944 SO by sinking 3 BBs and 1 CV so far I have, effectively, sunk 4 x 1944 CVs. In return I've lost 4 CVs myself. So, I've lost out for 1942 and 43 but I'm equal in terms of functional CV losses in 1944. I think, however, that respawnable US CVs makes more sense in-game and forces Japan to over-extend less as losses DO hurt it more than the US. At present they only hurt as much ( and that's not good enough ).

4. Increase interoperability of Allied plane types. Boost P-40E and Kittyhawk production. I'm thinking of increasing each to 60 planes per month each ( up from 40 ).

So, I'm VERY interested in hearing feedback from others. I don't want anything which messes up the 1941 and 42 strategic balance. 1942 should be a nightmare for Allied players BUT I think it is a bit too much of a nightmare at present. Japan REALLY is ueber-augmented in 1942... E.g. I've sunk 44 DDs, APDs and DEs and STILL Jagdfluger has more then enough to go around... He's lost close to 800 Zeroes and 400 Mikes and STILL he isn't out of pilots or replacements. Nasty!

I looked at RHSRAO airplanes at start and some reinforcements for 42. I get 2 B-17E/F at start with AP bombs (1 on WC and the other in the PI) and 1 B-17D that can carry AP bombs, but needs to upgrade before able to carry them (I hope). I get 3 more in early to mid 42, plus a B-24 with 8 x 1000lb AP. Putting them together should give him pause for concern. [:D]

I also have 2 B-25 Mitchells with torpedoes and get another later on. With a range of 8, they will help until my Beauforts come on line. They could be used to make an invasion of Port Moresby a little more costly.

The P-40's were done over by Brian in Big B's mod and it might be worth a look to see how he did it (production wise). He did research on where each and every P-40/Kittyhawk was produced and sent. With so many mods starting with half filled P-40 squadrons, I always wonder how they would fill out and keep fighting at the same time.

The Allied player, IMO, starts out very short of avaiation support at most fixed or large bases. In CHS, most of the Oz BF have only 30. Big B has 80 or 90 (which helps out). I would increase some of the larger bases size of their aviation support.

Could you have the Gato class subs come without defective torpedoes?? They come on in slow numbers, but have tremendous range.

Hi Nemo,

Along with making the allied CVs respawn, I was just wondering if there was an option to set some large AKs to convert to CVLs for Japan later in the war - say late 1943/mid 1944? There's a lot oopportunity for Japan to lose carriers and BB conversions late in the war help mediate some of that process. CVLs might fill the gap if Japan really steps in it early in the war...

Another thought for both sides is if some of the AKs can convert to Q-ships with 5 inch guns, AAA weapons, and ASW gear.

For the allies, if they saw Japan with subs sporting search aircraft, might they not copy the idea? You could maybe set up some of the subs to be retro-fitted with a search plane in early/mid 1942?

Perhaps a few squadrons of high quality interceptors (maybe some spits) available December 7th? Not enough to allow them to seriously context Japanese air superiority, but enough to defend a particularly base reasonably well.

So, my new plan is to let my fighters rebuild in out of the way bases and only bring them together when I can mass more than 100 for the proper defence of a base. Ideally I'll draft in as much aviation support as I need to bring that base's defensive fighter strength up to 200 ASAP and then I should be able to replace and repair losses as quickly as Jagdfluger can destroy them, with the end result that I, eventually, open up several bases and can begin bombing his bases. That's the plan anyways.

In the meantime my FlAK units continue to march to Batavia while Jagdfluger takes advantage of the delay to do some resource bombing - just as I had expected. In China he is also forming up for a major attack and has been trying to cut off my troops at Skorovidno. Hmm, he really wants to finish those theatres off so he counter-invade Java. Good, this invasion must have rattled him.... Hopefully that means he has to jump off somewhat unprepared.

My armoured forces do a good job of clearing Bandoeng but the Japanese have escaped already. I managed to kill quite a few planes on the ground though which is always nice.

37 enemy units are now located in Soerabaja but I expect that most of those units are small components of other units and thus not nearly as strong as they'd appear. Personally I am expecting roughly 1,000 AV at Soerabaja --- which given that Soerabaja is clear terrain simply won't be enough.

Hmm, the amount of service damage at Batavia prevented any repairs whatsoever. I think that tomorrow I will pull back to Teloekbetoeng and repair a few planes there... I also expect a CV-based strike on Teloekbetoeng as an IJN CV TF has sprinted into position 5 hexes from Teloekbetoeng ---- undoubtedly hoping to get a cheap strike in now that my FlAK has moved to Batavia. Well, they'll find 100 fighters on CAP. They'll get through and I'll lose ships but I will continue ravaging his carrier airwings and he won't be able to sustain this forever - particularly as his replenishment bases in Java are being systematically removed.

Sure I'll have problems bringing supplies in but he'll have problems maintaining a blockade also.

Here's the end result of my capture of so many new bases.... The IJN and IJA strikes are fragmenting and hitting empty bases leaving others to recover from previous bombings and serve as bases for my forces. I think that, at this stage, it is inevitable that my airforce will win the battle over Java. I just have too many bases to base from and, if I wish to do so, I can just surge to a few Level 4 airfields, sweep Soerabaja and then bomb it into dust in a single day ---- once I get my aviation support forward to the newly captured bases that is [:D]. My B-25 and A-20 bomber squadrons are rebuilding in India at the moment in order to be ready in 5 or 6 days time when the time for that strike arrives. I don't care how many fighters he has.... if I throw 600 or 700 bombers in Soerabaja WILL close and once it is closed I'll only have to face some long-range Zero sweeps, IJN CV-based strikes ( ruinously expensive in terms of top-range IJN pilots ) and level bomber raids from Singapore.

The slaughter on the sea and in the air around Java is what catches the eye, but I wonder about your little retaliations in the North Pacific. Given that troop casualties show up when you hit Jagdfluger's transports, he's clearly sending reinforcements to his invasion of North America. The question is whether it's to hold what he has, or to push further.

One other thought: do you have any cargo planes capable of delivering supplies to Java and southern Sumatra? There's clearly going to be a struggle running supplies in by ship.

It holds some 40 Japanese units but with a little luck so long as they muster less than 1500 AV I should have more than enough available to force their capitulation.

So all in all things are looking fairly good. The IJN is bound to try invading the Australian mainland soon ( I can see invasion convoys around my shores ) and thus I've ordered my forces to begin pulling out of Eastern Australia and toward Perth. Perth is the absolute key to all of this war as with its fall I won't be able to ship units and supplies from CONUSA to India and vice versa any more.

I won't seriously try to repel the invasion... That would be foolhardy. Instead I will just try to exact as high a toll as possible before pulling back into the Perth area.

In other news my supply situation in Java is pretty critical with none of my bases having more than 20,000 tons of supply. SO I am using my paras to try and take Dili with a view to creating a sort of chain of bases between Java and Australia for my fighter units to use. They can transit to Oz, rebuild to full strength and then hop back to Java. In addition there's 120,000 tons of supply on the way to Java in expendable transports.

Well, we'll see how it all goes.

Well, here we go again. It looks like Jagdfluger IS definitely trying to crush my forces in Australia by landing at Adelaide and cutting off their route of march from Eastern Australia to Perth.

Well, he's going to suffer losses in landing and then he's going to find himself hit by 1500 AV of Australian forces he probably doesn't expect to be in the area. It'll take a week for me to get my forces into the area but with just a little luck I'll be able to discomfit his forces significantly and push on through toward Perth.

Hmm, only thirty fighters in the air over Soerabaja. If I wanted to take the losses I'm sure my A-20s, B-25s and B-17s could force their way through, even without heavy fighter support. Hmm, tempting... Or I could just try to push my transports through the enemy aerial blockade in an attempt to unload enough supplies to begin rebuilding my fighter units. The lack of 20,000 tons of supplies in any single base is pretty crippling. I thought 120,000 tons would have been enough but, unfortunately, far too many of my AKs got sunk before they could fully unload.

This is nice to see. Whyalla is doomed BUT it is taking a toll of the Japanese invaders AND as an obvious landing point I've prepped Adelaide to support airstrikes into the flank of a force invading Whyalla. By tomorrow over 100 Allied planes will be basing out of Adelaide and attacking the fleet invading Whyalla. It won't stop the Japanese BUT it will raise the cost significantly.

Wow, he's brought in over 1800 AV in just three weeks. That's pretty scary. Still, a couple of good bomber raids aimed at closing the airfield combined with some blocking forces at Malang and Madoien etc should enable me to besiege Soerabaja and slowly but surely subdue it IF my Shock Attack ( over 3000 AV ) doesn't shift the Japanese forces.

Jagdfluger's done a good job in delaying my forces though, I'll give him that, he's earned his chance to hold Soerabaja.
