Lightning Tourney RD 1: Boerwar V. Lebatron (Global Glory 3.0)

Post by BoerWar »

Axis Powers – Sum ’39: Kicking off the Lightning tourney with a fairly standard Axis first turn. Poland falls and Foochow is taken. I debated leaving Foochow alone because for the change in rule about the U.S. resource gift, but I decided it was worth the risk. I’ll change my mind if the U.S. reduces the resource gift.[:D]

Change note: I can already see that I like the feature that allows you to browse during the other players turn a lot.

Awaiting an email from Lebatron so that I can send him the file.

P.S. Who did I annoy to get the scenario designer as an opponent in the first round?

You should probably mention in the opening move which mod you are playing for your audiance.
You should be playing Global Glory vs Lebatron (designer of UV and UV2.1).
The designer of Global Glory is actually not partaking in this tournament. (WanderingHead)

Enjoy!

Allied Su39 turn.

Preparing a sea defense. Pic shows Fall turn, but don't be mislead by that, it's always going to be that way for the WA player when view mode is used to take screen shots.

Axis Powers – Fal ’39: Germany takes the Low Countries which I now think may be a mistake in Global Glory. It has always been a slightly risky move because of the chance of a counter attack, but I think some of the tweaks to unit values may make it even riskier. We shall see.

I may have missed a previous forum post, I’m a little confused about how English units are being deployed to France without transports off the coast. Did the opening up of narrows for air units also open them for land units or is the transport in the North Atlantic 9 zone considered to be off the coast of France? If the second case is true and the goal was to prevent transports on the West of France from being bombed by Germany bombers in the homeland why not make the border between area 375 (S. Bay of Biscay) and W. France a double border? It would be less confusing.

I did a bombing run on the Paris factory because I sent the bomber out there hunting transports and found none (see above) so with nothing better to do they took a trip down the Champs Elysses.

The rules for U.S. entry had an effect on my choice of bombing targets this turn. Given that I already increased the chance of a reduction in the resource gift last turn by taking Foochow I went with resource and rail bombing this turn with moderate effectiveness.

We are supposed to be using regular old vanilla 1.020. In my pic above the stock map is being used. What you got there is my UV2.0 beta map with GG being played on it. UV2.0's map is not compatible with the stock scenarios or GG. What I suggest you do is totally delete that install and make a fresh copy from the CD then apply the 1.020 patch. And since your going to be playing UV2.1 next, I suggest you make sure that it's a good clean copy too. Check my pics in the UV2.1 thread and compare the seas if you're in doubt.

I will play my turn anyway and hope that your fresh install will not give us any problems.

Allies Fall39

Replay shows some Axis loses. TLC took out a Para. Nice. A suppression roll of 1 shoots down a Jap tac-air in Lanchow. China's fighter takes 2 hits and is forever gone. Japan has decent results taking out rail this turn.

Since Germany went into TLC a turn early, I decide to pull every supply point I can to fuel the French army to strike back. Combat odds showed I'd get almost 8 hits. Real results were very similar. British forces return to England since France will fall for sure one turn early.

Axis Powers – Win ’40: OK, we discovered that there was a British mole cartographer in the Wehrmacht planning section. She has been executed and we are now back in business. Since we can find it now France is taken. Italy joins and Malta is taken to free up our shipping in the Central Med (for now). Japanese bombers continue to convert munitions and fuel to tilled farmland in China.

As Lebatron surmised I had updated version 1.02 over a version that had been set up to play UV 2.0. I had to delete that whole directory and reinstall a second clean version of the game that I then updated to Ver 1.02 to get it running. So when I want to play the latest version of UV will I have to create a third game setup or will UV and GG both play on the same setup of ver 1.02?

Turn sent to Lebatron.

*Currently GG and UV2.1 have to use seperate installs.*

BoerWar I believe you are going to need 3 seperate installs.
1.011 for your current round2 2vs2 games.
1.020 for your current GG game with Leb (and your future round3 UV1.0 2vs2 tournament games)
1.020 with UV2.1 for your future UV2.1 games in this MOD tournament.

I personaly make seperate intstall and send shortcuts to my desktop for each exe and save file with identifying names for each. You just have to remember which different copy to put the saves in.

Hope that clears it up for you a bit.

BoerWar, you no longer have to hide you units like you did above. You can reload the game save and select view mod. When it asks for password you can leave it blank so it loads as a neutral player.

Allies Wi40

Early conquest of France and an immediate Italian entry cancel my plans to move some heavy fleets to the Eastern Med. The Eastern Med fleet is very weak at this point so it must retreat.

Boerwar has 4 German trannies now so I got to be a little careful. He also went heavy into North Africa. Moved 3 fighters and 1 HB to Tobrok along with a tank and some more militia. Because of this two front threat I decide to pull back from Africa for now because I don't have the army to defend Britain and Cairo at the same time, plus deal with Italian East Africa. Troops are in position to deal with IEA next turn.

Axis Powers – Spr’ 40: Jesse’s pullback forces me to start chasing. My armor races across the desert seizing Cairo and giving the Italian fleet access to the Suez. After a Naval skirmish that costs Italy a damaged BB and LS and Britain a sunk BB I was able to reinforce Italian East Africa. Attempted bombing of an allied fleet in the Bay of Biscay is unsuccessful.

Japan conducts bombing with more success damaging an AA and a factory.

Taking the screen shot using neutral mode is much neater.

Allies Sp40

If...if I only had one more turn to get my heavy fleets to the Eastern Med I wouldn't be in this mess. BoerWar easily pushes my small fleet out of the Red Sea and reinforces IEA. It was either a choice of staying in British East Africa and leaving India exposed to invasion, or move back to India. I moved all I could back to India. One militia left stranded in British East Africa. At this point I believe Italy has 4 trannies.

Axis Powers – Sum ’40: Continued expansion in Middle East and Africa. Some minor skirmishes at sea result in a British BB damaged and 3 transports sunk or damaged. On the mainland our gains were consolidated. Japan conducted a bombing campaign against Chinese land forces with moderate success (1 Inf damaged, 1 Mil destroyed).

Allied Su40

Japan is getting really lucky in China. If I counted right 3 aircraft gained experience from suppression kills this turn. I keep losing units like flies to suppression swats. This is why I hate the standard suppression system.

In hindsight I should have used port rebases to move my heavies to Cairo but I was counting on having at least 3 turns to get there. I was just trying to expend 1 supply on each heavy fleet I moved because there is a shortage of initial Allied supply in GG. My counter attack into TLC cost me almost every supply point I had. Once 1940 kicked in I noticed that I can finally get more supply on the board, but to late it turns out. Due to this, it appears GG greatly hinders an Allied counter into TLC. Maybe BoerWar was counting on this when he attacked TLC early. I moved an average amount of forces into France to discourage an early invasion of TLC so it must not have been my lack of defense that prompted him to move early. It was either his insight of my supply shortage or he simply by accident stumbled upon this advantage. Plus Italy activated in Wi40. Either BoerWar hit the 33% odds when France fell or it was the small chance that Italy has each turn to activate. I would hate to be the Allied player that suffers an early Italian activation. Due to the way everything has went, I don't think getting my heavies to the Eastern Med would have allowed me to hold Cairo. Getting them there earlier would have just saved me some supplies, as I'm burning a bunch now going around the horn of Africa. The early Italian activation plus the 5 starting militia in Tobrok gave BoerWar a rather impressive force there at the end of his turn. With my build que in India and Australia being out of sync with this early activation, I could not count on having their extra reinforcements to help hold Cairo. Plus BoerWar built a German transport giving the Germans 16 amphib points thus tying down some Brits from also helping in Cairo. His particular strat looks like a sound one that really exploits GG differences. This is my first game playing the Allies under GG and I already got some idea how to play different next time. However, if I was playing the Axis I would use BoerWar's strat that maximizes early Italian activation, because if you get lucky the Middle East is yours. With the Middle East being so much richer than before it seems the only logical path to exploit GG's differences.

On to what I did this turn. I drove some subs deep and moved 4 heavy fleets around the horn of Africa. It's my hope that placing them in the Indian Ocean will help minimize the destruction.

Axis Powers – Fall ’40: I said in the first turn I thought it may be a mistake for Germany to attack the Low Countries as early as I did. Looking back I think it is a close call that may be worth the risk. It depends on the Allied setup and how things turn out with upgrading troops. If Germany can get its Arm, Art and/or Inf upgraded before or on the turn it goes into the Low Countries then I think they can hold their gains without an unacceptable level of losses. I always like to build a transport for Germany because it can tie down a lot of British forces (even if you never intend to use it). This makes Africa easier because the WA must use forces to defend England that would otherwise be in the desert. I thought Jesse did a good job preserving forces when it was clear you couldn’t hold. I thought it might have been worth a couple of infantry to hold Cairo one more turn so that you could finish off Italian East Africa. The only other thing I’d note is that the WA has built an awful lot of fighters (even with the 3 turn build) when some Inf and Art could slow down the Germans in Africa.

I agree the suppression bombing is a bit cheesy, but if it works who am I to refuse. [:D] Given the impact factory bombing can have on the US resource gift I decided to just keep the Chinese factories busy rather than bomb them regularly.

This turn the Germans push a little farther south in Africa and Greece is annexed. Other than that just more consolidation of the gains made.

As mentioned, Japan continued saturation bombing of China sending 2 Inf back to the factory. In addition, the factory in the capital was bombed with one bomber damaged.

So far I find this to be an interesting scenario that seems to be fairly well balanced. New players should note that some borders in Africa are impassable to ground forces. I didn’t catch that in the scenario notes when I looked them over. The restraints are the same as UV, but not as noticeable on the map.

Allies Fall 1940

Chinese forces continue to misread my directions. I said step away from the falling bombs not into them! Seriously, it's a little dissapointing to see 2 infantry knocked out by just 3 CAG. That's not much tactical striking punch. However it seems to be just enough to get some Chinese each turn.

In the Indian ocean I strike the Italian fleet with my heavy fleets I brought around the horn of Africa last turn. Destroyed 1 Italian HF with no losses on my end.

I was surprised to see the Germans could move into Rhodesia. Thought them areas were blocked to prevent marches across the continent like this. Consulting the GG readme I see that's not the case, and moved 2 infantry to South Africa to prevent more exploiting.

My good video card went bad on me and I've been forced to put in my old video card which is also bad. It causes system crashes every few minutes, but at least I have something until my replacement comes in the mail. Due to the frequent crashes, I can't get through a whole turn before it happens, so I'm going to have to wait till my new card comes before I can resume playing. Might be Friday I hope.

Axis Powers – Win ’41: I forgot to post this yesterday. It was a quiet turn for the axis powers. The big news was that the U.S. sanctioned Japan for its bombing last turn. Resource gift dropped by 2. A little sub action in the Atlantic and some training bombing in China. Since it was a boring turn I’ll give a pic of China.
