RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.

Post by Nemo121 »

Play is resumed... Jagdfluger had to think long and hard about continuing as, obviously, its no fun if the game is too unbalanced in his favour ( as I think it was in this version of the mod ). I made a request to allow Pe-2s to attack naval targets from maximum altitude which he declined to allow and then pointed out that no matter what the game would end up being much more balanced from 1st January 1943 so while it is too much in Japan's favour in the first 6 months the balance will shift in 6 months time --- so we play on.

In other news as regards the mod:
Could anyone who wants the mod PM me. I'm going to make a final run-through of things and then send out the latest version of the Mod.. This will be version 1.0 and represents the first version I think has been played sufficiently to provide long-term enjoyment for players.

There's a whole slew of fixes in there including the fixing of some base problems I inherited from RHS which pretty much screw up the entire CONUSA/India supply pipeline in the version I'm playing under. Lots of additional fighters for the Allies in V1.0 at the expense of their Avenger numbers ( Allies used to get 142 Avengers per month. I engaged in a 1:1 trade for SBDs, P-40Es and Kittyhawks and dropped the Avenger replacement rate below 100. I'm sure that will still be enough and give the Allies a bit more fighter strength to play with in early 42.

Anyways PM me and I'll send the files out to whoever is interested. I'll also start a thread in the Scenario Design forum for feedback, questions etc. There are a lot of things in the mod which "seem" wrong when you first look at them but are put in there to model a specific capability. Overall though I'm very much more focussed on "the big picture" than modelling every plane variant so this is all still way more generic than the current RHS versions --- it should also be a lot more fun in 1944 and 1945 ;-).

Oh and one thing: Apart from the following House Rules which MUST be followed in all versions of the mod ( purely because of code/reality constraints ) I encourage anyone to play this mod HOW THEY PREFER. My view is to allow maximum leeway in terms fo what you CAN do but then let you do whatever it is you decide will be most fun/realistic/interesting ( delete as appropriate [:D] ).

1. Torpedo-carrying Me-264s may NEVER Port Attack as their Long-Lance type torpedoes simply would dig into the harbour bottoms despite whatever modifications were done. Those torps are just too big to be dropped into shallow anchorages. At sea though these Me-264s are CV and BB-killers.

2. Guided-missile armed Me-264 Behemoths may NEVER bomb from below 20,000 feet for any reason. This is tied in with how the game treats PGMs etc. Bomb from below 20,000 feet and the HS-293s become ueber-weapons and completely unreasonable weapons systems.

That's it in terms of MUST HAVE rules. I also strongly advise the rule which follows...

3. The Soviet Union should be active from December 7th 1941. This is to force the Japanese player to keep a reasonable garrison in Korea etc and to allow border clashes/aerial clashes. Obviously players can create treaties, agreements etc etc etc BUT there should always be an option that one side or the other is going to break the agreement and try to win a great, cheap victory in the Siberian theatre of operations. Also Allied players who agree to keep the Soviets quiescent until 1945 are likely to find themselves blown off the map by the beginning of 1943.

Apart from the top two rules ( and strong advice for the 3rd ) I think everything else should be left up to the players involved.

3 to 1 losses in favour of Japan but, again, my top-line fighter losses ( P-40E, Spits, Hurris and Wildcats ) remain low at 16 planes and pilot losses remain favourable to the Allies. Obviously though he is softening up this area for massive bomber strikes. I think the trick will be not to be there when the bombers arrive.

So, overall, very heavy losses for the Allies, slightly lesser losses for the Japanese BUT now that I'm ashore I can concentrate on increasing the pressure in Burma, China and Manilla, drawing a bit of pressure away from Java and, hopefully, buying the time I need to build a solid fighter core of 200+ fighters there.

Fortunately the first fruits of my systematic fighter replacement/reinforcement/upgrading programme will begin to bear fruit in two weeks time and should significantly boost my fighter pool numbers and quality such that attritional warfare over Manilla, Java, Burma, China and CONUSA can begin to be undertaken in a methodical, systematic and effective manner to an extent not yet seen. It won't reach its full effect for about 4 months though so I'll take major further losses while waiting for it to have its full impact. So far though, so good.

Oops, I forgot to mention the losses to Japan's transport fleet this turn. 2 more APs sank off Australia following damage inflicted during their invasion of Adelaide etc. With another 2 damaged this turn on top of the 5 damaged last turn the damage is really starting to add up. TO be fair though it isn't as though jagdfluger needs a lot of depth to his invasion fleets as he only has 3 major invasions left in-game:
1. Java,
2. India.
3. CONUSA

Everything else is gone.

Well we're out of synch again. There was no strafing of naval or ground units BUT our combat animations did turn back on and immediately we went out of synch again. Its crazy !!!! Has ANYONE got any tips for this. It just ruins the game.

Well, well, well. 172 Kates came i at 13,000 feet and over 10% were downed by my FlAK. God help the Japanese if they try torpedo or dive-bomber strikes on my ships in port. I've checked and I have roughly 260 ships in port. In about a fortnight I'll order them all to scatter and make for India. I'll lose a lot to enemy aerial strikes but c'est la guerre and I'll lose fewer than if they just sit there doing nothing. In other news this strike confirms the presence of Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Yamato and Junyo off Java. It looks like the majority of KB is fairly well pinned in place.

Not a bad day's strikes over Bangkok. That's another 3,000 tons of AP capacity sent to the dockyards for the foreseeable future.

And lastly a look at my aces. As you can see the Soviets and Naval Air Arm have punched far beyond their weight in this game. Without them things would be very, very different.

I don't know about the sync problem, but is he sending you the various reports as attachments so at least you have accurate info on combat, intel, and ops??  I use Bodhi's Utility to keep long term track of things using these attachments as it doesn't allow rewrites from the game itself even if there is a sync problem. It also makes it easier to keep track of large capital ships and what intel has for a particular base.

I cut and paste the new reports into the "SAVE" folder and then I update my Utility before running the Combat Replay. Just a suggestion if you don't have a Utility in use now.

I'm just waiting to hear back with jagdfluger's thoughts re: any particular problems or bugs he has noticed with the Japanese. At this stage there shouldn't be any obvious ones but it is worth being sure...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/29/42

After the massive slaughter of the early parts of the month both the Allies and Japanese are pulling back and minimising losses at the moment. Within the week though I'll begin making some offensive moves in Burma and China. I've almost finished rebuilding my Pe-2 units and have a good reserve of these planes ( about 50 --- which represents 1.66 month's production ) as well as forming a solid core of B-17s in action ( just over 100 currently in action with major reinforcements due over the next 3 months ) and after disbanding a lot of fighter units I have enough modern fighters in reserve to begin building the 200 fighter CAP I need to keep Batavia safe and use it as a base from which to strike enemy shipping into Soerabaja.

The only place in which I think we'll see any significant ground activity is in Australia. The Japanese have about 400 AV making for Adelaide while I have 300 AV blocking their path at the next city down the railway line and 800 AV sneaking around toward Whyalla with a view to coming up behind the Japanese at Adelaide.

I've also had a rethink of how I'm conducting my aerial campaigns. I think I may just use 2 x Pe-2 groups ( one in Burma and one in China ) to create absolute "no-go zones" for the Japanese within 6 hexes of my airfields in Burma and China. As this would prevent the Japanese escorting bomber strikes on these airfields it would then allow me to move most of my fighters out of these areas and bring in my twin and four-engined bombers for deeper resource raiding. Sometime from Mid-June I should have the force structure necessary for this strategy and will roll it out beginning in Burma and then, hopefully, expanding it to China.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/30/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1031 troops unloading over beach at Exmouth [Australia], 11,86

Allied ground losses:
202 casualties reported

A little Nz Brigade is landing at Exmouth ( on the route from Perth to Java ) to wipe out the Base Force which allowed enemy floatplanes to give their CV TFs ample warning of any reinforcements sailing to Java from Perth. Enemy CVs will react and kill a couple of the transports involved but the overall outcome of this invasion is pretty much predetermined.

Another nice quiet day in which losses were relatively equal on both sides in the air --- a great result for me as my aerial forces are only going to get stronger over the next 6 months.

In other news as the Japanese ships made a dash for the port at Adelaide from Whyalla 4 of their AKs sank. Japanese transport assets are really continuing to take a battering over the past fortnight. Over 260 Japanese ships have now been sunk.

Well I think its time for an update on the action in terms of overall losses... Looking at the overall picture of 8,227 Allied planes, 752 ships ( including 14 BBs) and a point score of 16,994 vs 48,127 it all looks pretty grim but to see that picture is to miss out on some vital points.

Basically though this misses out on some very important points:

At the beginning of February aerial losses were 3215 vs 2069 for Allied and Japanese forces. Since February over the intervening 4 months losses have risen to 8227 and 5844 respectively which represents an increase of 5012 and 3775. As you can see the loss ratio has risen from 1 : 0.6 in the first two months to 1: 0.75 from the 3rd to 6th months. In the long run this is tending towards the mod's planned 1:1 exchange ratio from January 1st 1943 when the Allies and Japanese should be able to field equal numbers of relatively equally potent fighters ( F6Fs and Corsairs vs Ki-44 IIIs ).

On the naval side I've lost 752 ships to the IJN's 269 but that still represents a loss of 261 Allied ships vs 150 IJN ships over the past 4 months. In essence while overall I've lost close to 3 ships for every IJN ship I've sent to the bottom this ratio was over 4:1 in the first two months and has been less than 1.7 : 1 for the past 4 months. Considering that these four months involved a massive and massively opposed invasion of Java that ratio isn't too bad at all.

On the land side of things the army loss points are now 10,470 vs 995. I'm managing to get close to the 10:1 land loss ratio which I feel is about the best the Allies can do in the first year of war. My landing of massive numbers of troops in Java puts this ratio at risk but it does let me interdict enemy shipping to a great extent and that should pay off in the long run.

So, overall, a damned bloody state of affairs but bloody battles which are maintained over time favour the side with the most bodies to throw in and that's most definitely the Allies. Initially high operational tempos favour the Japanese as their forces are prepositioned and have a decisive advantage in terms of initiative. As those tempos are prolonged though the advantage accruing from them swings toward the Allies. This is the difficult balancing act an Allied player in 1942 must succesfully tackle - he must keep the operational tempo at such a level that over the course of the year it wears the Japanese down and leaves them in a heavily attrited state at the beginning of 1943 ripe for exploitation by the massive influx of Allied reinforcements without EVER allowing the Japanese tempo to become so high that the Allied forces are completely overwhelmed at any particular place or time ( obviously this isn't always possible but it is necessary to hold at the crucial times and places --- or just misdirect the enemy enough that they don't attack those crucial places ). Treading the dichotomy between those two creates the difficulty level and tension which make the game challenging and interesting for an Allied player in 1942.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/01/42

The main news for today is that I've rejigged the aerial forces in China and Burma such that a show of weakness is being made over Rangoon. Well, it will show as a major collection of my forces but will appear to be weak in fighters, inviting a major Japanese fighter sweep.

Today I show strength gathering on the routes toward Rangoon, tomorrow I move enough of my dive-bombers to cause ops losses and give jagdfluger the evidence of a major dive-bomber gathering at Rangoon aimed at Tavoy and Rahaeng. I will also mount some preliminary strikes with weak fighter escort. He should strike back on the third or fourth --- by which time I'll have flown the strike forces out ( without having mounted any major strikes ) and flown more fighters in. The good side of this is that the air balance numbers won't change much so jagdfluger will be sure he's facing a weak fighter screen with many bombers as opposed to a fighter screen of over 200 fighters.

THIS is the indirect target of my Rangoon gambit. I think that it bears some explanation as the reasoning may not be immediately evident and the reason for this AAR is to elucidate AAR balance issues AND the thinking behind strategic and operational decisions as that's where my true interest in reading others' AARs lies.

1. I have landed troops in Java BUT the initial Japanese counter-offensive butchered my defensive fighter shield. Instead of 200+ front-line fighters fending off every Japanese thrust I find myself with barely 20 front-line fighters backed up by 30 to 40 second-rate fighters hoping from base to base in Java hoping to catch unescorted strikes and/or catch a split IJN Zero sweep and shoot achieve an aerial draw ( although, to be fair when I shoot down 10 and lose 10 I am definitely winning overall as I can replace my 10 much easier than he can replace his ).

2. While I CAN boost my fighter strength in Java to 200 in a single day by rebuilding them all at Batavia I have chosen not to do so for a simple reason ---- While all those planes are repairing on Batavia airfield the Japanese will just fly 300 bombers over and blow them all to smithereens.

So, about a week ago in gametime I decided I needed to:
a) draw the Japanese bombers away and then
b) massively attrit the Japanese Zero squadrons before
c) rebuilding my fighter squadrons in Java.

With the enemy bombers distracted and the Zeroes he has ranging over Java attritted to nothingness I can rebuild my fighter force and have all of the damaged fighters repair themselves and get back into the air before the Japanese can begin major sweeps and bombing raids again. If I can put 100+ fighters in the air over my bases then I'll be able to weather those bomber raids and turn Batavia into the safe haven I need.

Now I obviously cannot rely on the fighters in Batavia to shoot down 100 Zeroes in a single day at no cost to themselves so I had to approach this indirectly. Manila has drawn his bombers away extremely succesfully which has allowed me to build a solid core of 60 fighters. These 60 fighters are going to tangle with his Zeroes in 1:1 exchange rate aerial battles over the next couple of days ( I expect to lose 30 but shoot down 30 ) and then when Rangoon shows itself as a fruit ripe to be picked I expect that the IJN Zero "circus" will be ordered to sweep over Rangoon on the 3rd or 4th ( depending on fatigue levels etc).

My calculations show that jagdfluger has 108 ( 27 x 4 ) Zeroes in Borneo with another 27 flying over the Philippines. This seems to represent his entire force of land-based, ueber-experienced Zeroes in the DEI/Burma/China/Philippines theatre of operations. So, 135 Zeroes. My plan is to destroy those 135 Zeroes over the next 4 days. 15 per day for the next 2 days leaving 78 operating out of Borneo and 27 from the Philippines. Then on the 3rd day he'll rebase to Bangkok and either fly a sweep on the 3rd or 4th day over Rangoon. This sweep will comprise between 105 and 135 Zeroes ( depending on how whether or not he pauses for that extra day to replace losses from the previous two days over Java and lower fatigue from their long ferry flights). I will have 200+ fighters ( about half of them front-line and the other half second-line ) in the air over Rangoon and would expect to kill between 70 and 100 of the Zeroes committed in return for 60 to 80 friendly losses --- these friendly losses will be concentrated amongst the P-39s, Wirraways and I-16 Type 24s which I routinely commit in my hi-lo mixed quality Air Armies ( very Soviet of me I know [:D] ) so, overall, I'll probably only lose 20 planes that matter in return for 70 to 100 enemy Zeroes.

At that point in time, with the loss of between 100 and 130 Zeroes in 3 to 4 days I should have the 3 or 4 days of quiet time I need in which to upgrade my Java-based fighter squadrons and have them repair sufficient planes that they can actually put large groups in the air by the time the Japanese come calling again.

Then in about 10 days time as the aerial war over Batavia hots up again I'll move on Coal Harbour with a view to downing 100 Ki-109s ( in two separate batches ) over the course of a week there. My concept, as you can see, is to hit his IJN and IJA pilot pools in as rapid a succession as possible in order to force him to give my forces in Batavia breathing space to repair their damaged airframes after I upgrade them.

If this all works out then in 2 weeks time the air war over Java is going to REALLY hot up again and Japanese losses are going to begin to climb very quickly indeed. If it all works out in favour of the Japanese then I'm really, really screwed [:D]

A6M2/Ki-65 Zeke: 35 destroyed, 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 11 destroyed
Kittyhawk I/P-40: 2 destroyed
Wirraway CA-1: 3 destroyed
I-16 Type 24: 14 destroyed
MiG-3: 1 destroyed

This is pretty good. In return for 35 Zeroes I lose 3 front-line fighters ( the Kittyhawk and the MiG-3 ) and 28 second-line fighters. All in all that's a CLEAR win for me. In addition I forced several daitai to turn back so their morale is going to be crushed for days to come.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Rangoon [Burma] , at 29,33

Japanese aircraft
A6M2/Ki-65 Zeke x 133

Wow, he managed to bring 200+ Zeroes to bear, that's almost double what I thought he'd be able to bring to bear. Fortunately for me my MiG-3s operating as part of my hi-lo airgroup mix performed as well as usual. Jagdfluger tells me that a large number of his top aces got creamed and at least one 15 kill ace was captured by my forces. What was interesting to note was that at least 3 carrier air groups were involved in this strike ( Yamato, Soryu, Chitose) so by losing 40 of those Zeroes many of his premier carrier pilots are going to have been toasted. This is particularly so as the Yamato fighter group of 42 Zeroes began the game with an average Exp of over 90% and is really the most elite fighter group in the game.

Allied aircraft
Kittyhawk I/P-40 x 6
Wirraway CA-1 x 3
I-16 Type 24 x 13
MiG-3 x 21

Only 43 of my fighters contested this strike BUT, again, the use of a few planes "down low" to make the Zeroes easy targets for the high cover pays dividends. The Wirraways die en masse but the I-16s, Kittyhawks and MiG-3s butcher the Japanese Zeroes and 40 of them flutter to the ground in return for 9 front-line fighters and 24 second-line fighters.

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2/Ki-65 Zeke: 40 destroyed, 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Kittyhawk I/P-40: 6 destroyed
Wirraway CA-1: 4 destroyed
I-16 Type 24: 20 destroyed
MiG-3: 3 destroyed

So, today's tally is 75 Zeroes in return for 12 front-line and 52 second-line Allied fighters. Not bad at all but not quite what I was hoping for. I doubt I'll get jagdfluger to try for Rangoon again so hopefully a 1/3rd reduction in these top-flight fighter grous will prove sufficient to buy Batavia the time it needs.

An American sub does good work . . . yes, it's definitely a lucky day for the Allies.

I would argue that you made up in quality what you lost in quantity. Using carrier squadrons indicates his "surge" is stretching his pilot pools to the limit. And that steady drip of Nate losses over Manila has to be hitting his IJA pilot pools as well.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Harlock,

Re: the S-47.... Hmm, I'm not so sure why you are so jaundiced about the US subs... I've gotten a lot of sinkings from subs ( maybe about 70 in total ) and have gotten about half of them from US subs. Soviet subs are, by far, the best IMO but US subs do pretty well. The trick is to use The fish-named ones to minelay while the S class boats do the ship-hunting.
Between hordes of minefields and S class subs wiping out the minesweepers which head out to clear the mines you actually get to do a lot of serious damage to Japan.

In terms of losses... Aye, they definitely, definitely favour me and, to be honest, while I have a tough 3 months to come I should be in great shape in October ( with the onset of P-38Gs, P-51 XPs and the arrival of hordes of P-40Es and more Spitfires ). With 93 Zeroes downed that accounts for Yamato's fighter group (42 Zeroes ) and 3 x other CVs ( 3 x 18 ) = 96 Zeroes. So out of 11 CVs and 2 CVAs that Japan has right now they can mount 292 fighters. I've downed almost precisely 1/3rd of that naval fighter arm in a single day here. This should help me significantly.

The turn's with jagdfluger now and we're waiting on his reply. It looks as though he has abandoned Adelaide and his 1.5 divisions worth of troops in Oz. Excellent outcome [:D]

Well its official Japan has abandoned its initial invasion of Australia. They WILL be back and they WILL succeed ( at least partially ) but for right now I have inflicted significant loss and can gain advantage from this. How?
1. He is running his forces into the interior of Oz in order to avoid them being destroyed in a base hex when I take that base. I'll accept this and simply set up a massive training hex wherein my land forces bombard and deliberate attack the Japanese until their experience reaches 99% which since their current experience is about 50% will double the effectiveness of my NZ and Oz land detachments.

2. I'll be able to really attrit his forces by destroying some of these units. The only problem is that I'm sure jagdfluger will have made sure to load fragments onto his DDs and CAs as his CV TF retired from Oz. He invaded with 14 transports and it looks like I've sunk 10, forced 2 to sit in Adelaide with massive damage. This leaves him only two with which to evacuate about 9 land units --- hence he'll be using his escorts as fast transports.

In other news the Me-264s come out to play or as jagdfluger put it "The Empire Strikes Back" [:D]. I've noticed a pattern though. His Me-264s only come out to play when he is feeling insecure about recent events. When they've gone against him he puts in a morale-raising long-range Me-264 raid on some of my shipping in a rear area base.

The Me-264s are functioning precisely as planned. I had to make a hard decision in the development of the mod. Would I make the Me-264s an ueber-capable naval level-bomber by equipping it with 16 x 250 Kg bombs a la B-24/B-17s etc or would I give it a greater number of smaller bombs, thus optimising it for ground attack/airfield attack missions. I opted for the latter as it really is a strategic bomber. Looking at recent port attacks I am certain this was a good decision as those 100 Kg bombs simply aren't a threat to a CA, BB or CV in a way that a 250Kg bomb would be. CVLs, on the other hand, are vulnerable as poor Hermes found out today.

The Brewsters did poorly against the Me-264s cannon-based defensive armament. Excellent! The Me-264s are working as expected --- they can brush through light CAP composed of outdated fighters with little loss and even penetrate heavier CAP composed of modern fighters but ONLY at prohibitive cost. So in 1943 and onwards the Japanese player can hit vital Allied targets but he can only do so rarely and at great cost, as it should be.

Indomitable and Revenge shrugged off the bomb hits entirely. Hermes is in trouble with system damage in the low 80s and Reiger and Arunta are minor units of no major concern.

My FlAK defences claimed 5 bombers and one which had been damaged by the Brewsters crashed on the way home.

Hmm, I must admit I really like this less lethal air model. In yesterday's fighting in a stock A2A model we'd have seen the entire Japanese carrier fighter force destroyed and today we'd have seen the Mikes likewise overwhelmed. Instead the Mikes take roughly 50% losses, take a few of the escorting fighters with them and then my main strike dives in.

I'm getting 50 x Il-2s a day and am determined to use them up in strikes on forward bases. They have no rear gunners so some manner of effective escort is necessary. I can be a bit freer with the Il-2Ms.

What a pathetic performance, particularly when you realise these B-17s are coming in at 3,000 feet.

So far in the beginning of June 1942 I've decisively defeated 3 major Japanese invasions. 2 aimed at Burma in January and February which cost Japan 2 BBs and a CA and now this initial 1.5 division-strong invasion of Oz. He'll be back but it is nice to have even a few small victories to report.

Oh, in other news IJA losses have now climbed over the 1,000 point mark. Mine are just over 10,000 but that's inevitable with the sort of aggressive game jagdfluger is playing. My main interest is in maintaining a roughly 10:1 exchange rate overall ( when playing as Japan I seek to maintain a 20:1 exchange rate so basically I'm looking to make things twice as expensive for jagdfluger as I am prepared to accept ) as this will, in the long run, put a really massive strain on his economy. Fighters, bombers etc are relatively cheap. Maintaining an army and replacing heavy naval losses is immensely expensive --- many times more expensive than maintaining a top notch air force and it behooves the Allied player to remember this.

I'm happy to exchange bombardments as his supply situation is going to suck. In other news a single Soviet base force has been able to defend a base in Northern China after my resource-denial by precipitous retreat ( the closest I can come to a scorched earth policy within the game dynamics ) strategy has created a two base wide desert for the attacking Japanese. They pushed 9 units into my base hex but weren't able to supply them sufficiently to defeat a 30 AV base force [8D]. I'm already looking at basing MiGs there and using it as a British and Chinese pilot training base. I can also, just, use it to tranship Soviet fighter squadrons from Siberia to India and then rebuild them and feed them into the furnace. That's a more long-term issue though but it will prove important starting from the beginning of December 1942 and this game is all about the long view.

Here's a picture of the aerial losses today. As you can see Japanese losses are pretty much equal to Allied losses --- something which, in the longer term, really favours me especially as Japanese average aerial losses per month are on the order of 1,000 planes and they only get 366 pilots as replacements. So long as I remain competitive and avoid giving him too many milk run areas for training purposes I should be able to continue to manage his pilot replacements in a favourable manner.

No A6M2s were lost today BUT their total losses so far are 955. That's almost 1000 Zeroes in 6 months of combat or about 160 per month. No wonder I'm still seeing Claudes in action in secondary bases.
