Excellent stuff! The tide is definately turning and soon Jagdfluger will be an punching bag! [:D]
I doubt he maintain those losses now that you have firm foothold in the DEI region. I assume that everything there is going on as planned?

Allied aircraft losses
Brewster 339D/F2A: 3 destroyed, 2 damaged
The Brewsters did poorly against the Me-264s cannon-based defensive armament. Excellent! The Me-264s are working as expected --- they can brush through light CAP composed of outdated fighters with little loss and even penetrate heavier CAP composed of modern fighters but ONLY at prohibitive cost. So in 1943 and onwards the Japanese player can hit vital Allied targets but he can only do so rarely and at great cost, as it should be.
It occurs to me that this is exactly what the P-39 Airacobra was originally designed for. It was one of WWII's more unusual configurations: the engine behind the pilot so a large gun could fire through the propeller hub. 37mm shells should impress even the Me-264's. But of course, historically no Axis country ever built serious numbers of 4E strategic bombers, so the P-39 found its niche as a ground attack fighter in the Soviet Union. Any squadrons the Russians can spare?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Aztez,
Yeah I'm up to 96 fighters in a flying circus there and will build it up to 250 over the next week while his elite carrier-based Zero units rebuild. My fighter mix policy for the invasion of Java ( using Canadian, Oz, British, US Army, US Navy and USMC units to spread the pilot and airframe losses amongst my contingents such as to maximise my staying power ) has really paid dividends. Over the past 3 days I've increased my fighter numbers in Java from the 60s to the mid-90s. In another 4 days I should be at about 200 fighters and then I should be able to withstand even a carrier-based fighter sweep ( just today I saw the massive IJN CVA Musashi sweeping past Northern Australia on its way to interdict my supply runs into Java ).
I have two basic plans at the moment:
a) If it doesn't look like Java can really hold then I'll evac by air and sub to Rangoon and overland from there into India.
b) if it does look like Java can hold then I'll take the Andaman islands whilst pushing a ground force to Tavoy and seeking to push through it to the rail-line running from Singapore to Bangkok. With the rail-line blocked I can land on the Malaysian peninsula at little cost ( well, a cost which would probably horrify 99% of people here but which I'm quite happy to pay as it furthers my overall strategic goals ). At that point in time I'll get another great shot at the IJN as it tries to bring reinforcements into Malaysia, I'll weaken his forces in China as he redeploys them westward and so long as my forces can hold in Malaysia I'll have another large number of bases from which to strike at Japanese resources in the DEI and, with a bit of luck, drive eastward to China - solving China's supply problem once and for all.
Obviously that's all dependent on holding in Java and IF it comes to pass it would be supported by my navy making short little leaps forward along southern Borneo on the way to relieving Manilla --- which I am actually fairly confident can hold out until January 1st 1943 under current circumstances.
Harlock,
Good point... I upgraded 2 US fighter squadrons to P-39Ds yesterday after the Colombo raid. Expect to see them meeting Me-264s in the air in times to come [:D] [/b]

The Yak-1s didn't do too well today but they did help down another score of Ki-109s and every bit helps. Jagdfluger has pulled Ki-109s out of China to bolster the defence at Rahaeng. The Ki-48 IIs are gone from the Phillipines. I expect to see them over either Rangoon or Java ( probably Java ) in the next couple of days. Since his Me-264s and Ki-48 IIs are his only armoured bombers and the FlAK over Batavia will be murderous to unarmoured bombers I expect jagdfluger to preferentially use his Ki-48 IIs and Me-264s over Batavia. Thus their disappearance points to a raid over Batavia. Consequently I will bring my fighters into Batavia tomorrow to meet this expected raid.

I've been evacuating a Regiment of US Army troops from Kodiak but, unfortunately an IJN CV TF intercepted them. Never one to let an opportunity go to waste I've been dancing around for the past two days ( didn't mention it as no succesful strike had been launched yet ) edging ever closer to CONUSA while I've been waiting the arrival of 3 x USMC F4F4 squadrons. Tomorrow I'll be 8 hexes from CONUSA and sprint in toward it with the intention of drawing a strike onto my TF while these newly arrived F4F-4s fly LRCAP over my TF. 50+ F4F-4s should be able to do quite a bit of damage to another IJN CV's airgroup.
P.s. While I am using a regiment of troops as bait for this I have made sure to detach two APs to unload a fragment of the regiment so that no matter what happens I will have survivors.

The Yak-1s didn't do too well today but they did help down another score of Ki-109s and every bit helps. Jagdfluger has pulled Ki-109s out of China to bolster the defence at Rahaeng. In response I'm going to pull out my Il-2s and bring in my Pe-2s and conduct fighter sweeps. That ought to maximise my killing at a minimum loss.

Well I downed 16 Zeroes and 16 Ki-48 IIs ( 13 A2A and 3 to FlaK ) in return for 15 of my own. The bomb hits were all 100Kg APs and thus did no harm except for minor damage to the DD Tartar. Again I am thankful for the decision to drop down from 250 Kg bombs as it really does prevent the issue of IJA bombers being used as ueber-port attackers. Obviously though the IJN has to have that capability and that's why it has the Me-264 Behemoth armed with multiple Hs-293Xs. A plane which should be entering service in IJN bomber units any day now as it came online on 1st June 1942.

The Wellingtons prove their worth yet again with another nice long-range anti-shipping strike. 30 or 40 Wellingtons doing strikes like this won't prove decisive but filling dockyards with damaged ships is helpful in the extreme. The only problem is I need VERY secure bases in order to base these Wellingtons etc as a single enemy airfield attack can destroy almost all of them on the ground if it breaks through my CAP.

The only problem is I need VERY secure bases in order to base these Wellingtons etc as a single enemy airfield attack can destroy almost all of them on the ground if it breaks through my CAP.

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Very insightful commentary as always. Kinugasa is proving capable of taking quite a bit of punishment, but your bombers' experience should be going up nicely.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Another good day for my fighters. While I'm suffering equal losses in the air I'm killing more pilots than him AND by virtue of the fact that I have more than 12 fighter squadrons repairing damaged planes etc so long as my losses stay below 30 or so per turn the actual number of fighters I have serviceable should rise. What that means is that even a couple of days respite will allow me to field a significantly stronger force. At this stage I've got to say that Java is beginning to turn strongly in my favour. So long as he can't mount some massive 200 Zero sweep or something crazy like that I should do ok.
23 Japanese planes vs 5 of mine... but this is only the first strike of the day.

9 Japanese planes vs 16 Allied ones. The enemy bombers continue to inflict minimal damage. In about a week's time when I have worn out some of his bomber forces I'm going to stage a mass evacuation toward India and flush almost all of my shipping to India. With 200 vessels on the run I would expect at least half will make it and that's good enough for me as it'll give me enough to ship everything waiting in Aden to India and consider my next major invasion in a couple of months time.

And here's the situation at Changsha. As you can see over 12 divisions of Japanese troops are trying to take the place. I have 4 armies 2 days away which should bring the total Chinese strength to about 4,000. Add in a few more troops over the next 6 days as more of my armies move from Liuchow to Changsha and I might well hold and gain lots of experience. Even if I don't I should be able to retreat in good order.
I'm bringing up reserves to reinforce Liuchow and replace the troops headed to Changsha.

Well, well, a deliberate attack appears to have been the wrong choice here. By the time the Japanese recover their disruption and fatigue I'll have additional armies in place. Hopefully it'll be enough to hold the Japanese in place and buy even more time [8D]

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
ORIGINAL: Nemo121
Kinugasa has slipped her moorings during the evening and is making her escape. Let's see if she makes it --- multiple torpedo-bombers are on the watch for her.
It should be a splendid foxhunt -- given the damage she took I imagine her primary method of propulsion is a swimming detail pushing against the stern.[:D]
Only about 20 planes lost between both sides today. We're both taking a breather and the fighter defence at Batavia increases in strength a little. Let's see what jagdfluger sends against us over the past 2 or 3 days.
Don't you mean over the next 2 or 3 days? [;)]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Operation FOXHUNT is cancelled. Kinugasa slips under the waves after making only 60 miles. Cool !!! I'm always happy to see IJN capital units ( CAs and BBs ) which are proof against my level bombers and dive-bombers slipping beneath the waves as every one of them which is lost is one less to absorb my 500lb dive and level bomber bombs when I'm level and dive-bombing his fleets.
Harlock. Good catch, unless of course we're using some weird form of temporal displacement machine during our game. I could tell you if we are but then I'd have to kill you [:D]

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!
I'd abandoned Malang to tempt the Japanese in. I'd hoped for a couple of regiments at least but I'm not above swooping in and killing a weak Thai unit and sending it scampering back to Batavia. I'll pull out again and then let jagdfluger retake Malang. I don't need to hold it, I just need to keep things in a state of flux. Holding it didn't create flux, ceding it to the Japanese does.

*chuckle* 17,488 AV... I doubt the Japanese will be able to overcome that, especially when their shock attack will face fire from 3799 Soviet AV.
In other news: I just heard Avril Lavigne's "When you're gone" again for the first time in months. I highly recommend it for anyone who is missing a loved one in their life or, particularly, knows people who are on deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan.... When it came out last year I was in that situation and, to be honest, it made me give up WiTP for a few months as I couldn't face the thought of sending virtual soldiers out to die while I worried about someone dear to me who was deployed to Iraq. She came back physically safe --- although whether she survived mentally is a very different question [:(] [:(] [:(].
Anyways, if you haven't heard the song and are in that position give it a listen - it's on YouTube. I'm a pretty tough SOB - I had to be to deal with breaking bad news during my ER and general medical time - but it still makes me remember and feel maudlin every time.

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Contemplations on airfield size.
Let's examine Batavia in this game. It can be swept by 100 Zeroes on any given day which means that my aerial garrison needs to be roughly double that in order to fight off the Zeroes and get significant numbers of fighters in amongst the bombers whilst ensuring enough planes survive that I can put up a reasonable CAP against another bomber attack the following day.
This dictates a fighter force of 200 fighters ( less if I have fighters far superior to the Zero, more if all of my fighters are far inferior ). As things stand about half the fighters are equal to the Zero ( roughly ) and half the fighters are definitely inferior so 200 or so fighters is a good number to stand against the 100 Zero escort which is my maximal threat estimate.
200 fighters require a Level 4 airfield to operate at maximal efficiency. Batavia is a Level 4 airfield at present and can be built to a maximum of Level 6. The interesting point is that since 200 fighters are required to mount a defence Batavia is, at level 4, ONLY able to mount a defence. It is not able to base any worthwhile number of bombers at all and thus a Level 4 airfield in Java is a purely defensive proposition. At Level 5 it can carry 50 bombers and at Level 6 it can carry 100. Thus with increasing airfield size one experiences massively disproportionate increases in offensive capability.
Taken to the extreme ( a situation which won't pertain to Batavia as it cannot expand beyond Level 6 ) a Level 9 airfield with 200 defending fighters ( adequate to fend off an enemy attack ) will have 5 times the offensive power of a Level 5 airfield, not to mention the fact that at Level 9 it will also be able to avail of the multipliers of simultaneity, operating all bombers at maximum bomb loads and the ability to base longer-ranged bombers thus complicating and spreading out the enemy's defensive dispositions.
Let's look at Batavia for a second as my force mix bears some explaining....
1. 2 x F4F-4 squadrons. Well what's there to say? These two squadrons draw on my USN pilot pool ( spreading my pilot attrition ) AND draw down on fighters with an excellent replacement rate ( 96 per month ) so overall they are great choices for attritional aerial warfare - which is one of the primary goals of my invasion of Java.
2. Spitfire VB. Apart from the MiG-3 this is the best fighter I have. Fast, manoeuvrable and cannon-armed this fighter is shooting down far more than it loses. I have very low replacement rates BUT its effectiveness in combat helps keep losses to a manageable level so long as it isn't in combat every day.
3. Seafire. Pretty much the same as the Spitfire. It also has a pretty low replacement rate but seeing as only a single squadron is feeding off that replacement rate Fleet Air Arm Squadron 882 has a fair bit of staying power.
3. Martlet II. A bit of an obsolescent design but one which is only a little worse than the Zero. Why choose that rather than just equipping FAA No 880 with Seafires? Simple, I'm fighting an attritional battle and thus I want to spread my losses amongst as many plane pools as possible to give myself the greatest staying power possible. I am sacrificing peak strength ( fielding the highest number of the best planes at a particular point in time ) in order to maximise long-term strength. The Japanese can win any point battle by concentrating their force for a couple of days. Long-term Guadalcanal-style battles are their weakness and that's what I've designed Java to be. Java is to be the Guadalcanal of this alternate history.
4. Hurricane I. Not quite a match for the Zero but, again, it lets me spread my losses amongst multiple pools and, to be honest, the Hurricane takes down a fair share of Zeroes... It dies in droves against the Mike but that's one of the reasons why I have taken great pains not give the Japanese an airbase within 2 hexes of Batavia.
5. P-40E. Fully a match for the Zero. A good plane in the hands of good pilots. It is a 1:1 match for the Zero. I am consciously building up my P-40E pools and in 3 months time I should have about 300 in my pools ready for mass conversion of USAAF squadrons in time for my late September/early October aerial offensive.
6. P-40 B. Well, I have a few of P-40Bs in the pools and I might as well get some use out of them. They aren't quite a match for Zeroes but with the range at which the Japanese are having to fight I'm hoping they can get some kills against fatigued IJN pilots. In addition it spreads my losses amongst multiple pools and no matter how outclassed they are now they'll just be even more outclassed in the future so I might as well use them while I have them.
7. P-39D. I actually think these aren't that bad. Sure Zeroes tend to butcher them but get them in amongst the bombers ( as they should do given my force mix ) and I'm sure I'll see quite a few bombers going down.
8. Kittyhawk--- Umm, these guys got trapped on the island. I'm going to fly them out to Oz over the next few days in order to garner the fruits of the first US Pacific Fleet offensive of the war --- which kicked off yesterday [:D]
9. P-36A... Well I have reserves of them and I might as well use them up. Against enemy bombers they are as good as anything else which only has MGs and I have enough other planes to tackle the Zeroes. Again, as with the P-40Bs they are only going to become more useless as time goes on so I might as well use them up now as let them rust.
10. I-16 Type 4... Armed with cannons they actually don't do a bad job against enemy bombers. I am considering upgrading them to P-66s when I scrounge 12 of those planes together. The P-66 should be almost a match for a Zero.
Il-2s... Well once Batavia becomes a Level 5 airfield ( about a week from now ) I plan to upgrade this to a Pe-2 squadron and will then unleash them on Soerabaja turning the port and airfield into no-go zones for the Japanese as they fly above the IJA and IJN CAP. That ought to guarantee a major IJN and IJA bomber and fighter offensive against Batavia and that will lead to massive losses for both sides --- which is exactly what I want in order to pave the road for my aerial offensive in September/October 1942.
As regards the US Pacific Fleet offensive...
Well mostly it involves sub minelaying all over the map and the rebasing of large numbers of my subs to Manilla in order to wreak some havoc around the DEI.
It also does involve a sortie by a USN CV TF comprising 2 of my 3 US CVs with a view to shuttling fighters from one isolated Allied base to another and finding some IJN warships to tangle with. Only one of my CVs actually has planes on board but I figure if I run into trouble the 2nd can take the surviving planes on board and keep up the fight. Plus I have a cunning plan to reinforce my CVs while they are at sea if the situation warrants it. What can I say? No-one ever accused me of not being aggressive enough [:D] [:D] ---- and I've spent the last month sitting around pretending to be a wimp in order to create this situation. Yesterday I got confirmation of a juicy IJN convoy within striking distance and I'm taking it. It is escorted by CVLs and possibly CVs but, hell, I figure if I put my CAP to 0% and sortie everything I can get some hits on those CVLs

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Well I figure you guys can sweat the intercept with me...
Over the past month I've been at pains to do nothing really aggressive around Oz. I have even moved my fighters to India via the Phillipines in order to make Oz look like an even more juicy target than ever. My hope was to get a situation in which a major Japanese convoy would swing within "dashing distance" of New Zealand with insufficient escorts.
I think that time has come. A major Japanese convoy dropped troops off at Tazmania over the past couple of turns but was covered by IJN CVLs ( Chitose and Chiyoda ) and land-based Zeroes. It is making for the Japanese bases at New Caledonia while another convoy brings more troops and supplies to Tasmania. Meanwhile the IJN CVLs are covering Tasmania itself.
I have been hoarding two fully functional USN CVs and their escorts ( CAs and DDs ) in the waters off New Zealand for the past month. I have been running AOs to them and running them with 0% naval search in order to keep them resupplied and invisible and now, I think, their time has come. They are two days sprint away from the hex bounded in green in the picture.
The red lines show the directions of travel of the Japanese resupply convoys with the single crossed line showing where they will be in one day and the double-crossed line showing where they should be in two days. The remaining IJN TF at Tasmania is the weak CVL TF featuring DDs and two CVLs. The BLACK Line shows the range of my torpedo-carrying Beauforts operating out of Melbourne and Sydney.
My plan is to sprint into range of the two convoys in two days time, fly my 32 Kittyhawks off one of my CVs to bolster the defence of Australia and fly 40+ dive and torpedo-bombers onto my CVs. That'll give me 20 fighters for defensive purposes and 90 attack planes.
I plan to hit as many of the transports as possible and then go CVL-hunting. jagdfluger can't run east with his CVLs unless he wants to run into my CV TF, he can't run north as I have a LOT of level bombers based in Oz just waiting to pound on his shipping and he can't run west as he doesn't have enough fuel to make it around the edge of Perth to Java so, all in all, I think I have an opportunity to sink a lot of shipping here at minimal cost. I also think his CVLs won't be able to run fast. They only moved at minimal speed 2 to 4 hexes per day on the way to Tasmania so I think they must be very low on fuel at the moment and probably aren't up to high speed manoeuvring. I was itching to hit them when they first took Tasmania but I wanted to have his shipping attrit itself on my coastal defences and aerial defences first before bringing it to battle with what is, essentially, a CV TF which can only mount 20 fighters in self-defence.
The only thing which could spoil this is if he could see me coming BUT since all of these TFs are being spotted by land-based Catalinas and since I'm sprinting in from 20 hexes away ( well outside of the range of his C3Ns ) my CV TF should still be invisible and a major surprise for him.
If I spot a major CV escort tomorrow I can still run away at high speed ( I have fuel stockpiled in New Zealand and AOs posted along the route back to Panama to ensure that I can run away at full speed all the way to Panama.... I also took the precaution of topping up my fuel bunkers today to ensure I have the maximum fuel levels for sustained fleeing possible). If it all goes to plan though I'll hit him hard 2 days from now, move east and try to mop up survivors for another day before heading into Melbourne, refuelling and re-arming. At that point in time I'll try to run my CVs to Perth and from Perth to India to join up with the UK carriers in a 5 CV TF which will have some hope of covering resupply convoys into Java in the coming months.

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Looks very interesting. Have you got any kind of intel on the location of the Japanese CV's?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Stopping an Invidious Empire.
Harlock,
Well I think there are at least 2 CVs blockading CONUSA with another 3 or 4 operating off Java. That leaves another 4 CVs free to operate --- in addition to the CVLs ( two of which are at Tasmania ) ---- in the slot between Oz and New Zealand. So, could I run into far more than a single CV can handle? Sure but c'est la guerre and there's very little enjoyment to be had or skill to be shown in playing it safe and running operations with massive safety margins.
This operation will be risky in the extreme with no real margin for error and, as such, it is an interesting operation to run - will it be succesful ? Possibly not but success isn't actually the final arbiter of my enjoyment ( or hopefully of those who may read this AAR )... E.g. The most certain way to proceed with things in February 1942 would not have been to plan an invasion of Java in May 1942 in the teeth of a strong IJN and IJA naval and aerial resistance BUT it was an interesting gambit and has, I think, yielded quite a unique game situation --- which helps keep the game interesting, different and open to situations where skillful play can garner rewards.

One of my AKs got caught escaping from Java --- but not before it unloaded several thousand tons of supplies. My supply situation, which had been precarious, is now pretty healthy again - healthy enough that I have over 200 serviceable fighters and 70 or so bombers in Java and will, over the next week or so, expand Batavia airfield and begin striking Soerabaja's airfield.
I'll also begin pumping out heavily damaged AKs in an effort to draw IJN and IJA bomber strikes down on my shipping and wait for my CAP to butcher the IJN and IJA strike wings.... at which point the real mass exodus will begin [8D]

a) head for Taz and kill some CVLs,

My options tomorrow are:
a) head for Taz and kill some CVLs,
b) run away,
c) hunt down the cripples and the other convoy.
Since I need to refuel and my AOs are nearby I'm going to hunt down the cripples, refuel the day after and then try to intercept some fleeing CVLs.
