RE: I need a tutorial
The manual writer tells me the tutorial guide should be complete and ready for layout by Tuesday, I expect it will take a few more days to layout after that, then we'll release it in the Members' Club with an announcement here and include it in future gold masters and updates as well.
This is a cooperative effort between Ralegh and our manual writer, so I believe it will be worth the wait.
Regards,
- Erik

Idiot.
Ok, let's have none of this "idiot" stuff please. This is a complex game and it's easy to miss stuff. Likewise, there's a lot that's actually in the manual, but we're working on a tutorial for those that are not EIA veterans.

Some new questions;
1. Kingdoms - there is only Confederation of the Rhine and Duchy of Poland? No Italy, Westphalia, Bavaria, Ottoman Empire? Suppose I create the Duchy of Poland from Posen and Masovia, can I later add other Polish Provinces (e.g East Galacia) to the Duchy?
2. In land Phase I enter an area intending to lay siege, and this is my only combat. When I click End Phase, no combat phase is played. How do I set a siege in Land Phase?
3. Still looking for map display during AI combat Phase,, and ideas?

1) Acutally; there IS the Ottoman Empire. I don't know if others are planned for later updates or not.
You currently cannot add provences to existing kingdoms.
2) To lay seige - move the corp into the city (or attempt to) - this will give it a small white upper-left corner.
Now you have the ability to ATTEMPT a breakin during land combat (l-c only happens if you make a successful
breakin roll)
3) Not sure what you are looking for here

Combat Battle screen comes up looking for a chit choice. I know the battle is a town XXX, but I can't recall if there is an adjacent connection to area YYYY where if Mr. High Ugliness with a large army sits. This will very much effect my chit choice of course. For that matter, I can't see if there is a large enemy army nearby either, or where other battles may be.
How do I minimise the combat screen to look at the map?

Not sure we are talking about the same thing here.. in the boardgame, there is Turkey, a major power, and a kingdom called the Ottoman Empire which can be formed from the Middle Eastern and North African minors. Many powers can form the Ottoman Empire, not just Turkey, though obviously they would have called it something different (Confederation of the Nile or something).

I thought I tried this (and I have tried over and over to get this to work, and in the end declared war elsewhere to generate a battle so I could conduct the siege!!). I'll give it another go, watching for the white square. Does the white square mean something? I've seen it on the fleets, where initially I thought it to be a check box to move fleets in a stack..

I got frustrated with this as well....I finally noticed in the message section on the left side that sometimes the break in was unsuccessful (break in only successful on "5" or "6" on a 1d6? maybe a +1 if under garrisoned). This can happen even if you properly move the beseiging corps to "inside" the city you want to assault. If you don't break in, you don't get a chance to eliminate the garrison...but your only clue as to what happened is a one line message in the message log...on a side note (it's been a loooooong time since my EiA days), does anyone have a rough feel for how long it would take to starve out a one factor garrison?

RE: I need a tutorial
Here is the relivant section about the O-E (Can only be created during an economic phase - thats the only time that "Create KINGDOM" is available - "Kingdom" is different from "Free State"):
12.8.3 The Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman Empire can be only be created by France, Great Britain, Spain or Turkey. The Ottoman Empire consists of the, minor countries of Algeria, Cyrenica, Egypt, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tripolitania and Tunisia. If France, Great Britain, Spain or Turkey controls any six of these (all possible minor countries that the major power controls must be incorporated), then the Ottoman Empire may be declared by the controlling major power.
NOTE: To create The Ottoman Empire, click on any component area and then click the "Create Kingdom" button.
The Ottoman Empire can never be created by one major power, even if all other requirements can be met, if the Ottoman Empire is still in existence with another major power’s free state flag.
Any purchases made for a free state minor country before it becomes a component of The Ottoman Empire is lost when the Kingdom is created.
Once created, the Ottoman Empire is generally treated as a normal minor free state. The combined money and manpower of its component parts are doubled (as in any minor free state) in value and used in any desired way for the usual purposes. The combined money and manpower may be used to purchase army factors for the corps or garrisons of any of the component minor countries with corps. Garrison factors from the Ottoman Empire may be placed anywhere within its territory. In addition, there are extra advantages for a Turkish-controlled Ottoman Empire, as follows:

Improved Morale:• If Turkey controls the Ottoman Empire, the morale value of every Ottoman Empire corps becomes "2.0"for infantry and "3.0" for cavalry.
Tribute:• If Turkey controls the Ottoman Empire, at the conclusion of the December Economic Phase, any unspent Ottoman Empire money points are added as "tribute" to Turkey’s remaining money points instead of being lost.
The component parts of the Ottoman Empire are still treated as separate minor free states for purposes of conquering it. However, as long as the Ottoman Empire’s controlling major power still controls at least one component minor country with corps, the Ottoman Empire still exists (consisting of whatever territory remains). If the last component minor country with corps of the empire goes neutral, is ceded or is conquered the empire will cease to exist and become separate parts (either neutral or controlled, as the case may be) again.
If the Ottoman Empire’s territories are ceded, either voluntarily or as a peace condition, they are ceded as separate minor countries. If the empire is gone, then it must be recreated to exist again.
The Ottoman Empire is worth two political points to create. Individually gaining or losing parts of it gain/cost the usual political points for conquering/losing minor countries.

Note: I belive that there are still some open bugs involved in the O-E (morale not increasing correctly if I remeber right & it may not "dissolve" correctly even if all pieces are conquored)

The small white square in the top corner means the unit is "in the city" (or trying to be) - take a look at ALL garrisons for example. Fleets may also have a small COLORED square in the corner - this means that they are BLOCKADING the fleet in the city (they are in the "Blockade Box" in EIA terms).

As for how long to starve out a garrison - it depends on the SIZE (how many "spires" a city has) that are NOT completely filled. The loss for a city is D6 MINUS the number of unfilled spires. Thus a 5-spire city with 1 factor takes D6-5 losses every turn (rolls <= 0 are no loss); a 1-spire city (that can hold up to 5 factors) with 1 factor in it takes D6-1 losses. A 5-spire city with 20 factors (4 of 5 spires filled) would also take D6-1 losses.
spire holds 5 factors.

RE: I need a tutorial
Besieged garrisons must forage. Their forage value is based on the number of spires in the city. There is a penalty for every 5 factors of garrison over 5, I believe. So how long it takes depends on luck. A four spire city with one factor will stay as long as it can roll 1-4 for forage, in a two spire city 1-2 needs to be rolled, etc.

RE: I need a tutorial
Just wanted to let you all know the tutorial guide is currently in layout. I think it will be a help to new players who don't have previous EIA experience. I'll post here as soon as it's been released and we'll include it in the next update as well.

There's an opening in the sample game(s) we're playing. We're just getting going, so if you want in, now's the time (SETUP is done, but nothing else).
At LAST! The greatest campaign board game of all time is finally available for the PC. Can my old heart stand the strain?

I hope it includes a complete description of the UI.
And the map. The numbers on the map, number of spires on each city, etc.
Why make a kingdom and other types of allies? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

RE: I need a tutorial
Minedog - you can't add provinces later (sob)
Grapeshot Bob - it doesn't - it is an into for newbies, not a definitive description of anything. However - this is the place:
Numbers on the board - this is the 'forage number' for each area on the map. Basically, bigger is better - but not important if you will pay for supply.
Spires - A few effects: firstly, max garrison in the city is spires*5 (so 4 spires = 20 factors). Secondly, when beseiged, the no of spires is the forage value for the garrison (if you can't get sea supply to them).
Kingdom - they get double the money and manpower printed on the map, although they can only use it for their own forces. You get a PP for creating a Kingdom.
Status of minors (whether indiv, multi-province, or kingdom):
Forces on the map (and builds in eco phase and gets reinforcements etc)
- FREE STATE: you control them, but their money/manpower can only be used for their own forces, completely yours
- SPONSORED: you got control to play them when they were attacked by another major power. Should have limitations on your control, but I don't think any of that is currently implemented. If war lapses, becomes your FREE STATE.
No forces on the map - doesnt build, etc
- ALLIED: as influenced but also: if someone declares war on you, they automatically DOW the aggressor, becoming your FREE STATE
- INFLUENCED: you can freely garrison, depot etc. If someone declares war on them, always comes to your control as SPONSORED
- NEUTRAL: you may move through but may not garrison
- CONQUORED: territory complely belogns to you. Money and manpower added to your own and spent on your forces. May turn into a FREE STATE
