I thought there was a diminishing returns function at work as pilots got better e.g. if I'm a 40exp pilot and I make a kill, I get a bigger bump than if I'm already an 80exp pilot and I make a kill.

Assuming Jag's pilots are already pretty good, they probably didn't get a lot out of the great Coal Harbor turkey shoot.

Or is that not so?

Yes, 40xp pilot usually gets more xp for shooting down enemy then 80xp, but still 80xp pilot gets something. Sometimes one point, sometimes two and sometimes nothing.

Aye, they'll have gotten experience but in the long run I don't think it'll matter all that much as we are really having a war on the industrial scale and at that level another 50 brilliant pilots doesn't matter all that much. What matters is numbers of pretty good pilots etc.

Jagdfluger's comment for this turn was "My Zeroes suck now :-(". I don't think he is entirely correct. I think it is just that his pilot experience advantage is being whittled away. 6 months ago a team of P-40Es and P-40Bs would have been eaten alive by Zeroes. The same planes now tend to eat Zeroes alive and that's because my pilots are growing in experience while his are losing it, on average.

32 of my fighters downed 32 enemy planes, including 25 Zeroes over Palembang. This is a pretty nice rate given that P-40Bs aren't exactly top of the range fighters these days. The bombers still got through but if I establish this as a pattern then Palembang might get to build up over time and I could establish a nice CAP at Palembang itself --- which would be helpful in attriting the enemy even more.

Might it have been better to try a deliberate attack, or would you prefer to keep your powder dry and inflict casualties on the defensive?

And what exactly is Jagdfluger trying to accomplish here? Darwin is far away from the really valuable stuff in Oz. It seems to me those troops and resources would be better used in the DEI.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Java re-invaded !!!

Post by Nemo121 »

Harlock,

What we're going to see now, IMO ( and I might be wrong but looking at things purely strategically and bearing in mid Jagdfluger's past as a fighter pilot ( and I'm sure he was an ueber-aggressive one... ) I think what he's going to try to do is misdirect me, try to get my to commit where I shouldn't and then hit me deep.

So, what will we see?

1. Landings in Northern Oz and probably south-eastern Oz.

2. Paraborne landings all through Burma and into Southern India to tie down my forces guarding rear areas ( I have to commit a Bde to each rear echelon base as the Japanese now have 1 x Paratroop Bde, 3 Paratroop SNLF Detachments and 1 x Parachute Division. So that's a total of about 500 AV they can parachute onto any base in range. ).

3. Increased attacks on Burma in an effort to attrit my air force and draw in more ground forces.

4. Efforts to complete the blockade of Java.

5. An invasion of south-western India with the invasion fleet passing well to the south of Java ( just north of Oz --- which is why he is taking out the bases I could use to base PBYs at in order to spot this invasion fleet ) in order to avoid detection and attack by my forces based in Java/Burma. Also, by taking this route he will ensure that I won't have enough time to redeploy ground forces from Burma into south-western India in response to a bypassing of Burma.

So, I think that the invasions of Northern Oz will be accompanied by invasions in southern Oz in order to try to lull me into thinking that the northern Oz invasions are part of the "Oz strategy" whereas, in fact, they are part of the preparation for the invasion of India.

So, what am I doing about this? Well, I have about 7,000 AV in India proper, another 3,500 AV in Burma and another 3,000 AV in Java. I'm going to continue fortifying what I have in India, I'm going to try to rush USAAF fighters into India and I'm going to create an escape route from Java so I can get my experienced fighter squadrons back from Java to India IF the invasion fleet suddenly appears off Ceylon. Right now I hae too few fighters available to fight off KB but if I can bring in another 200 fighters from USA and fly the 250 fighters in Java back then I definitely have enough to fight off KB - so that's what I'm going to set the groundwork to do.

How will this be accomplished? Well, I'm going to have another massively costly set of invasions of Sumatra. I am going to do my level best to punch out the Japanese holdings in Andaman Island and northern Sumatra. If I can take those two bases then I can fly fighters into and out of Java via an airbridge running from Rangoon -> Andaman -> Northern Sumatra -> Palembang -> Batavia. This will allow me to reinforce it come October or, in a worst case scenario, evacuate my air force quickly for the defence of India. Its all about staying flexible and trying to hold the Japanese as far away from India until the beginning of 1943 when I'll finally have the aerial strength in place to hold India no matter what they do.

A long-range raid by Ki-264s. It destroyed a lot of Il-2s but all of the plane types destroyed are ones I have ample replacements for.... or I wouldn't have been basing them at Bombay with such light fighter cover. Most of my level bomber and torpedo-bomber force is now based in Aden ready to fly out as and when required. Karachi is out of range of Ki-264s and Calcutta is well-protected by my fighters.

I've withdrawn from Rangoon but once I have enough 96 MiG-3s in the pool and can upgrade a fighter squadron to MiG-3s whilst still keeping 64 in the pool for my October push I'll start to seriously hold Rangoon. Until then a couple of squadrons of I-16s will form an expendable screen.

Note the Thalias... I think we'll see parachute raids into Burma in retaliation for my foray into Rahaeng. If we do then I'll pull my troops back from Rahaeng and just create an impenetrable garrison at each base. We won't see 500 AV dropped in a single turn but we could easily see 200 or so dropped + supplies and to defeat that would require a really strong garrison.

VERY strange. I absolutely didn't order this attack. I figured that when only an EAB had landed last turn that it must be a feint to draw me into attacking today --- and wrecking my force as jagdfluger was undoubtedly going to unload his main combat forces today--- so I held back. Unfortunately the computer seems to have over-ruled me. Weird.

Today I have ordered the evacuation of Darwin and also the beginning of the evacuation of southern and eastern Australia. All Australian and New Zealand forces will withdraw into Western Australia and try to hold the Perth bastion.... 4 bases, major airfields and one good port with a repair yard. Holding Perth will greatly help my convoys going to India as they can refuel and reprovision there. In addition I've managed to sneak 6 DDs out of Java and into Perth during my "great escape" from Java so I have the nucleus of a nice little surface raiding fleet.

Sounds like it might be a productive area for submarine patrols, especially with Perth nearby.

Say it ain't so! Are we really talking about abandoning Sydney?[X(]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Harlock,

Absolutely, with the sort of forces jagdfluger can bring to bear now that the Pacific is his to try to hold all of Oz would simply be to lose it all. I have 2,000 AV. I have 3 coastal bases to defend around Perth. If I try to hold south-eastern Oz also then I have about 10 bases to hold. I can't hold ten bases at sufficient strength to fight the Japanese off. I will be doing well to hold 3 bases strongly enough to hold them. This is always the way it was going to be when he turned serious about Oz --- and why I fought so hard when he landed near Adelaide  ( he was trying to cut my forces in Oz in two to prevent me reinforcing Perth when the time came ).
