ORIGINAL: Mike Solli

Castor, if you have the airfields in range, base your bombers at multiple airfields.  Then they usually will fly separately and achieve the result you desire.

very good advise! The problem is that I have Townsville full of aircraft for naval strikes and while I could split them (both the A2G and anti shipping aircraft) 50/50 into Charter Towers and Townsville I prefer having them together as I would like to see a "big" strike against shipping, if Swift decides to close in with Lexington (or more carriers, as I doubt that Lady Lex will be alone in this area).

It´s less a problem that my strikes aren´t split up, it´s a bigger problem that the Allied strikes from Brisbane get split up and they disrupt half of my Army in one day, while combined strikes would need 3 days to do the same.

the Avengers have been bombing the airfield before and now base forces are present. Base forces also means a lot of fighters, with 80% Cap we see 50% in the air meeting the Avengers with a big escort. The Dutch fighters have no chance at all, dying 22:0, those pilots must have had an awful experience while the Aussie Kitties did better, taking down 7 of my 80 exp Tojos for the loss of 17 of their own. The 5 Avengers manage to torch 2 of my fighters on the ground...

we have 3 BBs with DD escort in position to attack Brisbane. My Tojos unfortunately got bounced on and on, made life hard for them, they manage to achieve a kill rate a bit better than 1:1 (I don´t count the obsolete Dutch units). That´s no good news, the Tojos are 80 exp (the Kitties and Spits are surely only max 60-65) and we were flying at 20.000 so why the bounce once again is only on the attackers side...

Imagine how my face looked like when I say 4 damned Avengers going in for a torp run and one achieves a hit!!! [:@] My face turned [:)] again when I say that this must have been FOW.

I have argued often enough about the Uber effectiveness of PTs in the past, while I was told on and on that I´m the only one (and Pauk of course) who experiences this Uber effectiveness. As a funny side note, the PTs were SURPRISED! Still they sink 2 DDs immediately, for the loss of 4 of their own... [8|]

As I was aware of this PT feature in WITP we have agreed on a hr about PTs right from the start. Max 6 PTs or 2x3 PTs... Looks like Swift has forgotten or deliberately ignored this hr and I lose 2 DDs immediately.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Swift was sure that my BBs would go in to attack Brisbane so he employed another trick... use a dozen small TFs with throw away ships... no hr against it, but I really can´t think about ever sh*t before starting a game. Normal would be to get those ships out of the port as fast as possible, not placing them in those TFs to meet the BBs... [8|]

there were even more TFs there but they weren´t even all attacked... no bombardment of course, the BBs ran out of op points and ammo, as most of those damn MSWs were sunk with their main guns...

excellent tactic... thank you!

I should have know it before, I can only lose with this attack. It´s a pity that it is because one reason was the ignorance of a hr and the other one because of a "strange" tactic... What should I complain about, I do find it strange, others will say it´s ok. I just want to have a good working AI or a game with 278 house rules for every possible try to game the game.

Perhaps two would be enough: don´t do stupid things! Don´t do things you would not be allowed to do in real life...

I´m now fighting fire with fire, I´ve started with the splitting of my divisions to make the Allied air attacks mostly useless. No hr about that, so okay... [8|]

We have a huge Cap, again at 20.000 ft, again the two Tojo sentais in the lead got bounced 20 mins ([X(] yes, that´s how long such a fight takes in Nikmod [:D]). As in my game against Hortlund (where I´m the Allied) the Zeroes perform far better, achieving a kill rate of something like 13:0, the equal skilled Tojos are somewhere around 1,5:1 (not counting the Dutch)... again two Avengers manage to get through, unbelievable 157 fighters on Cap. But that gives me hope to get my bombers through later on...

should I even comment PTs anymore? I´ve done it for years now I could do it for years in future for no result also as I´m (and Pauk of course) are the only one to see that something is "funny" here. This is a daylight encounter, range 6000 yards. The PT sinks Hayashio... Means for the loss of 5 PTs today, they sank 3 DDs... NO THERE´S NOTHING WRONG! How could it be wrong...

Here you go! day/night experience, numbers in patterns is exp at the start of the war. Boy, I was really amazed...

Fuso 79/84 (72/73) [X(]
Yamashiro 79/70 (69/69) [X(]
Ise 70/77 (70/74)

I would have to look it up in how many actions the three BBs took part but especially Fuso gained a lot of experience in one year of war! Don´t know how much exp was gained in the fights against those MSWs, I guess Fuso also took part in the fights against the British BB and BC off Australia. Hopefully exp gains are not always the same, a fight against an enemy BB / CA or other warships should result in more exp than a fight against a MSW or a transport.

Nevertheless I was totally amazed to see that they really increased their experience as I´ve never really thought it could so much when the ships have already a high exp.

DD Inazuma, Shell hits 4, on fire
DD Sagiri, Shell hits 3

DD Amagiri
DD Oboro

Allied Ships
PT PT-142, Shell hits 5, and is sunk

We had to send DD reinforcements to Rockhampton and they meet a single PT that is sent from Brisbane (Swift now uses his PTs outside of their range, they are drifting back if they survive their attack - more are spotted coming towards Rockhampton). Both DDs took serious damage from the lonely PT, Inazuma is now at 16 sys and Sagiri at 13. It´s not just that I think the PTs are way overpowered (yes, as are many other things in the game) but that´s not enough, Swift doesn´t even care if they can reach their target with their range, no he just keeps sending more. I don´t like this idea and once again a game feature is exploited. The feature that ships that are out of fuel still can move 120 miles a day... [8|] And those out of fuel ships are able to shoot up your dds...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/30/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1181 encounters mine field at Midway (95,61) - Coastal Guns Fire Back! [8D]

296 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Allied Ships
MSW Lockeport, Shell hits 35, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Canso, Shell hits 27, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Bayfield, Shell hits 29, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Quatsino, Shell hits 33, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Outarde, Shell hits 32, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Nipigon, Shell hits 6, on fire, heavy damage

hehe! All are dead. I have no idea what Swift was thinking sending in those MSWs, when the last of his BB bombardment encountered heavy counter fire from the coast defenses. What he doesn´t know is that there are only some 100 sub laid mines anyway which I brought in and one of his DDs encountered some time ago. Looks like in this case the sub laid mines absolutely paid off... [;)]

Sub attack near Midway at 95,61

Japanese Ships
SS I-153

Allied Ships
MSW Nipigon, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

the last MSW is finished with two torps... I guess this will delay an enemy invasion by another couple of weeks, or Swift decides to go in nevertheless that he knows that the coast defense is still very dangerous.

Port supply hits 2

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 20000 feet

the heavies on high alt port attacks achieved nothing so far. The reason for that is that the port is only a level 1 which means that it´s so small they can´t hit it and therefor my base forces don´t take casulties either. No chance to wear down my CD guns this way... So on the defense: try to not build up the port if possible, it will save your CD guns from air attacks...

I have pointed it out earlier, I do find it strange to form all those mini TFs to guard a base... that´s just strange, nothing else... again, we haven´t even fought half of the mini TFs that actually are there...

but now, the uggly face of WITP again. Can´t speak of anything else than a bug, CA Haguro had 3 or 4 sys damage yesterday, today it wasn´t hit by anything else than MG fire from a PT.

the ship just started burning suddenly and is now heavily damaged... [8|]

RE: WITP in the Alps! Swift (A) vs. Castor Troy (J)

Post by castor troy »

This turn was the last one in 1942 and now Gentlemen:

VICTORY

we enter 1943 and the autovictory pops up at a ratio of 5,914 : 1. We were already at 7:1 and even had chances to reach 8:1 but nearly 6:1 is okay for me too! [:D]

I´ve sent the new turn to Swift two days ago but haven´t heard from him so far, I hope not to see him quit the game! [:(] Autovictory is nice but I never aim at autovictory with my strategic decisions nor is it a reason for me to stop the PBEM. Better say Japanese auto victory, as an Allied autovictory at the end of the game would be a reason for me to stop the game as it doesn´t make much sense to play on at that point.

Still, it´s always nice to achieve it! [:D]

Swift played an absolute passively campaign and the first time he actively reacted against one of my offensives he lost a BC a BB and more than a dozen cruisers off Australia. He gave up most of China without a fight, it was too easy for me then to take the three cities I had to fight for. China is reduced to Chungking and the ground losses reflect this in points also.
