Plus, Noumea was maxed out both as a base and airfield, had South Pacific HQ located there, and tens of thousands of supply points, so in theory everything was optimized to improve morale very quickly with any unit there.

I understand New Caledonia is similar to the south of France.

That kind of environment would definitely improve MY morale if I had just come from New Guinea! It just surprised me to see that Raider Bttn sit there with morale<5 for weeks and weeks while other units there showed definite improvement. Perhaps I should have canned their commander...

Just incase no one noticed it in the other thread, but BigJ62 (AE Dev Member) made the following comment:
Not sure what you mean by ‘they’. I am a developer on the land team of AE and I have been working in all areas of code concerning land units for quite a while including morale and this has been updated/improved/enhanced and debugged.

There are no morale problems with land units in AE, what was once a perceived problem in Witpx1 is no longer present in AE.

The thread can be found here:

Is LCU Morale Fixed in AE?

Thanks again for all the hard work from the AE Team and getting this issue resolved in AE!

Dear Chad,

Thanks for coming back again and again to the thread on Malaria and Morale. And Thanks to the (legendary) AE team for tweaking morale.

But what about the Malaria "bug"? {If a base has a toatal air build + port build equal to 10 or above malaria effects should cease, but they don't.}

I have seen many complaints about it, yet little concrete info about why it is difficult to address. Have you found anything out?

Yours, Johnny

Is that in the manual somewhere? Going off of just memory, it seems that this was something that was created in our collective mind.

Looks like we will just need to see how things play out with the new op modes.

Section 12.0 Weather (Pg 173):

Malaria Zones - Units will take extra fatigue in Malaria Zone hexes, although being in a friendly base can minimize the impact of the Malaria Zone.

Section 9.0 Bases (Pg 156):

4. They can minimize the impact of sustained combat and disease on ground troops.

What's interesting is that disease is linked to fatigue, not morale. So perhaps we've been asking the wrong question.

The only place in the manual that refers to the magic number of 10 (port + airfield) is Section 14.8 Spoilage (Pg 192). And that simply says "Any base with combined port and airfield of 10 or more has no spoilage." The magic number never comes up in any of the (very) limited discussions on fatigue or morale.

However. Section 14.4 Supply/Fatigue Effects on Land Units (Pg 189) has an extensive discussion on what causes and mitigates fatigue. Item 3 states "the larger the base (airfield plus port size) the greater the fatigue reduction." So that combined with the spoilage rule is probably the source of the urban legend you cited above.

However, unless a LCU (in stock) has fatigue of 0, it gradually loses morale.

Matrix informed us of the size 10 connection with malaria via the forum a long, long time ago IIRC.

It is something that I have heard over and over, and before my PBEM reached 1944, I thought it was true and purposely sent troops to Malaria bases over 10 combined size for R&R. Obviously, after doing so, I found out very quickly that things were not working as intended. Thats why I started this thread as it seemed more to me something that was not working as intended, rather than a change I wanted to see implemented.

As has been pointed out by the AE team members in this thread, looks like with the new OP modes, things will be better in AE.

There are no morale problems with land units in AE.

Is that roughly akin to "The floggings will continue until morale improves."

Thanks Kull and witpqs for the info. I stand corrected.

But perhaps I asked the wrong question? (Sorry, but I'm surrounded by lawyers and they will only answer the precise question asked).

How about Fatigue and base size? Fatigue appears to lower morale, combat capability and has a big effect on movement speed.

Units seem to end up with high fatigue levels (upper mid-30s) regardless of wether they are tramping through the jungle or in a large base (size 6 or more). {Based on fond memories of the dim past. But its been so looong! I stopped playing WitP in mid '08, expecting AE sometime soon. And after reading hundreds of pages on AE, I can't go back! Help! Sorry - off topic - malarial delusions}

Am I wrong on this? I.e., does a unit in a malaria zone stationed at, say, a size 1 or 2 base end up with higher fatigue than one in a size 6, 7 or 8 base?

And, dear devs, is AE the same?

Humbly Yours,
Johnny

There are no problems with fatigue either, you can reduce fatigue anywhere on the map in AE.
