I don't think it can be done with the current engine.  If WITE works out, would Grigsby design it such a way that it's ground combat system could be mated to WITP's naval combat system?  My wife is praying this is not so....she'd never get to see me.    Come to think of it, she might be praying it does work!

The problem is that the level of detail people think they want is COMPLETELY incompatible with a game of a world-wide scope.

I used to dream of this sort of thing too, but then I grew up.

as evidenced by the challenge of what we already have. How many players have completed a full game of WitP and how long did it take?

How about Bombing the Reich? Same level of detail.....arguabley an even higher planning detail required (at least if you want to win)....how many people have ever completed a full campaign of that monster and did it take longer than the actual campaign itself??

I've always thought the entire WW2 would be amazing, but would be a massive time consumer... which is ok I guess.  It would be interesting to see how different it would have to be.
You know, of course, that "World in Flames" is in development...

"T" certainly doesn't stand for "tact."

But, look. Let's get right down to it once and for all. WitP was a growth on UV, which drew a lot of its design blood from PacWar and the old "Solomons Campaign (and Bomb Alley) - War in the South Pacific - Carrier Strike" vein.

It was a tinkerer's job, and we wound up with a tinkerer's product.

Grigsby (and his shoemaker's elves) wanted to create competence with shock and awe. They got a little of both, but I have always had problems with where all those designs went (and I'm not going into all that again here - I just had problems, that's all, and I have always said as much).

So, with AE, WitP is dead. Long live WitP. But let's move on. I think everyone in wargaming design has done so.

For better or worse. And I think in just about every case when it comes to strategic designs (particularly those dealing with WWII Pacific warfare - and most especially the naval air aspect), it's been worse.

As my old man said when he saw me for the first time, "Well, I hoped for better, but I guess we can live with what we got."

WitP is all we got...

Well, there it is, but you know one good thing, at least. WitP is not a game, or a game engine, that could ever satisfactorily present a game on the entirety of WWII.

Period.

And take my word for it, WitP-AE can't either.

Okay. First, I think the map ought to be actual size.

And round. That would not be a problem: we already have Google Earth.

BTW, how does anyone feels about a WitP 2 with a round map (no "projection" and, thus, no distorsions of any kind) and continuous time?

I wonder with the increasing power of duo and quad core engines and the operating systems and programming languages increasing in power, would it be possible to increase the witp game engine to cover the whole world war? Would the game code need a complete overhaul or just a increased database?

Can't imagine the time you would spend on this size of a game and planning everything you would want THEN executing it.  It would be just one person doing, when irl there were thousands and minds thrown together and executing everything...[X(]  would pretty damn cool thought to see what kind of a game it could be.  Like you said T, I have always dreamed too.

Being an old wargamer I can’t understand why anybody would want to game the whole of WW2 at WitP level. At an operational level WitP has all the forms of warfare of that era represented. From the naval/air competition of the Pacific to the large land-unit maneuver in China. Also other posters have hit the nail on the head when they basically state that WitP would lose its accents if expanded to cover the whole of WW2.

And the players would have a better understanding of the Rob Peter to pay Paul aspect of running a global war.  If the Essexes are in Italy, they aren't attacking Japan.
