Blow things up and kill people.  The more you blow up and kill, the higher your score.

It's kind of like a pinball machine, in fact.

The only way to win is to not start playing. :)

There was this funny thread about ways to win as Japs...

Options like:
Never send your second turn back.
Buy american war bonds. You'll still loose, but you'll be damn rich after the war

anyone has it in his (her?[:D]) bookmarks?

Like CSA in any american civil war (i.e.VG)you must to play to avoid the defeat. I think that the best option is thinking at Victory points, IMHO.
you can wIn with japanese at end of war if they will not get enough VP (how much you save from initial phase, the best).
it is only my oppinion.

tbh I've never played a single WITP game with my focus going towards VPs. I think VPs are wrong in this kind of grand strategy game. I know they are necessary to make the AI work correctly ,and because many human's can get themselves over that "key" number, but other than that I see them as useless.

for me you win as the allies if you equal or improve the historical performances of the allied side during WW2.

And you win as the japanese if you manage to put up a tough fight, making the allied side bleed bad for their gains.

In short, you win by waging a war, not by looking at the scoreboard. After all, I'm pretty sure that Hirohito didn't surrender in 1945 because the VP point relationship was 3 to 1 and it was 1945...

I agree with you 100% RAM. You win by playing! You and your opponant both know who played the best, and in the end those are the only two opinions that matter. VP's force everyone to play to meet the standards of only one person..., the one who decided what was worth how many "VP's". Play for the joy of playing. I wish there was an option to turn VP's off and just play the game...

And why did he surrender? And most importantly, how would you simulate those reasons in a game?
VPs are a necessity, they represent the abstract background around a battle/war and simulate it.

Why did he surrender?...

well two cities reduced to atomic waste had something to do with it. Along with the fact that Japan was isolated from the NEI and from the continent, so they didn't have any raw materials to continue the war effort (nor enough food to feed the civil population).

I really don't need a VP screen to tell me I've reached that point in the war...

Said that, yeah, I admitted it, VPs are necessary because not everyone shares my point of view and more importantly because they are related with how the AI works. All I'm saying is that -I- couldn't care the less about Victory Points. If you do, well, good for you :).

Em...they don't "force" anyone to do anything. They are a number. You can look at it, study it, or ignore it at your leisure.

And little martian? Do you send your death rays according to numbers or do you ignore them and simply whipe the planet out?

In my opinion if you have the game up and running, you've already won!
