Historical justification for CV plane replacements at sea!

These planes are all "spare" aircraft and NOT considered part of the active complement..(I love this pic).

This pic shows replacements of all 3 types carried at this time, the one on the left being a TBD..

I always keep a spare SBD hanging from the rafters in my garage. Just in case some suspicious looking CV starts prowling the neighborhood. [8D]

I thought the rafter storage of aircraft was already accounted for as "reserved" planes.

The manual says that 'reserve' aircraft on carriers dont count against the number of planes you can have on a CV; and it specifically says that it is assumed they are 'hanging' above.

See page 148 of the manual.
