What is Harpoon anyway? Is it some real-time pausible Naval Warfare game?

Judging from your previous posts on assorted games, you would enjoy it/them I think. Particularly Harpoon CE which, although I also have ACW, I must admit I play pretty much exclusively of the two. The Harpoon 4 tabletop rules are a blast too, if you can round up an opponent.

Harpoon 3 [ANW] scenarios for the PlayersDB

Post by hermanhum »

ORIGINAL: aotino

Thanks guys. Sounds like I'll go straight to 3.92, but if there's a Harpoon V in the future, I'll get in line too. Sounds great.
If you start directly with 3.92, I think that you will have problems. Welcome aboard, shipmate. [8D]

I recommend these patches as the minimum requirements:

ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-UpdateRelease-380-Inc.zip
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-UpdateRelease-v3900DR.zip
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-UpdateRelease-v392bComp.zip
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-UpdateHotfix-v393.zip
ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon3ANW-HotfixRelease-v394.zip

I suggest using the PlayersDB for the least number of problems.

I have to say I really enjoyed the HCE Demo. It's a neat little game. And it says the full game comes with almost 300 scenarios and an editor?I think I may actually get this game.I'm very surprised, I though it would be a boring Naval simulation....it's actually.....fun.[X(]

Amazing what things you discover when you try new things.[:)]

Hard to think of a 'boring' Naval simulation. Good Naval wargames of all periods are a lot of fun because they don't actually have to be that complicated to be better simulations than most land warfare games actually are, particularly now real-time is pretty much the standard approach. You can therefore concentrate on learning and applying real-world tactics which a quality game will suitably reward. The Harpoon games, particularly ANW, are maybe a little harder than historical ones to get to grips with, but not unbearably so.

With Storm Eagle's 'Jutland' for example there isn't anything more 'complicated' than a few standard formations, changing course and speed and picking targets - and watching thirty or so virtual battleships blast the c**p out of each other. [:D] The trick, of course, is which of those things you do when and (my usual trouble) avoiding a complete pigs-breakfast in trying to co-ordinate everything, with ships going in all directions trying to avoid the collisions your orders encouraged. With 'Age of Sail' games (and we really are due another one of those!) you are trying to do much the same things, but with a completely different set of constraints and challenges.

I sometimes play Age of Sail, great game.(It came as bonus game in the Matrix John Tiller Napoleonic Wars Package).

Great, I'm trying to avoid asking for allot of stuff this Xmas, but this Harpoon 'CE' is just too good not to go on the Xmas list.[8D]

Gee, this is great info. I'll get on this as soon as I solve my computer replacement problem. However, the Player Database from the Harplonkhq is a great lead, and I'm much obliged by the recommendation. I am a long-time enthusiast of Harpoon. In fact, I wrote a very large campaign senario series for the original Harpoon Game that was published years ago. I don't play much of the HCE anymore, but I'm a great enthusiast of Harp III. I'll be up and running in a couple of weeks, and I intend to download the game properly. I may be re-contacting you for advice if I run into any problems. Thanks, and all the best. Alan Caso

Harpoon 3 [ANW] scenarios for the PlayersDB

Post by hermanhum »

Do you happen to remember the name of the battleset/series?  Do you still have a copy of them?

We could try and resurrect them so that we can play one of them MP on the server as your intro to the game.  You could see how well your scenarios play when there is an intelligent opponent on each side of the equation.  [:)]

Hi Herman,
I'll have to check on an old computer that I still have. I may have the scenarios saved somewhere in the program files. I'm out of town right now, but will be back the weekend after this (for that computer exchange I told you about), and I'll fire the old one up and see if it"s still on there. The reason I remembered that I even did them was when I was getting info on Harpoon III uploads. I went to the Harpoon Forum, and one of the administrators remembered me from that scenario campaign. I can't remember right now who that was, and I don't think I saved the exchange, but if you put some inquiries on that forum, he may pick it up. Just refer to my name. I will, however, check when I get home. Thanks and all the best, Alan Caso

Hey Herman,
I looked up the exchange on the Harpoon Forum, and it was in 'General Topics' under "New Computer" from Bundy that I was reminded of my campaign contribution. He might be able to direct you to those campaign scenarios. Thanks, Alan

I just avoid that place entirely.  That's okay, we can always find something appropriate from the PlayersDB.  I just thought that it would be a nice way to welcome you back to the game.

Some of the other designers have found that their scenarios play out totally differently when there is a human in control of the various sides.  [:)]

I can see that. I don't blame you for not going to the Harpoon Forum. It's a bit crazy there. Anyway, I'll let you know when I'm back on line. All the best, Alan

One fellow swears that it runs okay on Vista.

Did you install it inside your Programs folder?  That is a common problem.  Also, I have heard that it is better to always install with Administrator level access.

I'll give that a try. Hopefully that will work. I installed in my matrix folder(default install) which is not in the programs file.
