I'm considering putting together a disertation on China....if for no other reason than to try to disprove some of the general misconceptions and myths about the front that keep getting bandied here and in other threads on the subject.[8|]

But its sunny out and my son has a futbol game this evening so I might have to put that off for another day...[;)]

My advice.....don't bother. me....i'd rather have a beer. [:D]

Why shouldn't I bother watching my son play futbol? Afterall he is a pretty decent futboller...

Proper football, rather than the handball-hybrid you laughing call "American Football".

I'm a transplant that happens to live less than two hours up the road from Spider and down in the American South, football is treated like a religion on Friday and Saturday. You can get into trouble by saying the wrong thing about a rival team in their neck of the woods. [;)]

Well, after reading all of the above I have decided that I am more right , and you are all more wrong. Or words to that effect.

It's the variety played with the fut.

I say leave china for later, go hang out with your son.

But if you are bored at some time and have a few cites/sites or links, then pass them along. I have decided to learn more about this theatre [:)]

And the refs are bought and paid for. I've seen more than my share of homecooking at some of the high school football games...glad my son plays futbol. (Although I suspect the reffing will be about the same on that pitch as well...after seeing some of the state tournament games)

A few years ago - Quarter finals - 11 year olds . Foul called in the box in the final minute. PK awarded. Keeper makes the save...Ref allows rekick claiming 11 yo keeper came off his line. [8|]

My kids have played both types of fut/football and I have seen more than my fair share of lousy reffing ( is that a word ? ). But friends who do ref in various sports say that the main problem is lack of folks willing to learn how to ref properly.

Boy did we hijack this thread. Sorry.

Treespider,

For Terminus' purposes, it would be helpful if you distinguished between the two types of "football". American football versus "knees-bent-running-around-kicking-prancing-faking-injury-whistling-crowd-football" This may help him keep these straight.

Casualties taken have nothing to do with the odds.

Exactly!

I think that's the point that is too often overlooked in these discussions. I can't prove this with data, but my sense from seeing a lot of ground combats is an awful lot of the casualties happen in the fire phase, not the assault phase.

Well I've played American football ...and I've watched my 13 year old son play futbol. I can say this --- when my 13 year old turns 18 I would much rather run into him with pads on than not...

No, because I actually have a brain, and noticed Treespider's repeated use of the Brazilian term "futbol". So no, I don't really need "help".

Yep, in Football the players stay out on the ground for the best part of 90 minutes without constant timeouts and advertising breaks. All players are totally involved in the game and apart from the Goalkeeper really have few specialities.

Whereas American Football is a game where only 2 players in each team have any skill in kicking the ball, most players dont even touch the ball and greatest skill is getting in the other teams way. They stop for any reason they can think of and run on and off the field all of the time. a 60 minute game time takes 3-5 hours to watch!

Admittedly with some bias, I'd rate the Football codes as:

1. Australian Rules
2. Association Football
3. Rugby
4. Rugby League
5. American Football.
