Frankly I think that the naming rights of ships should be sold to corporations to help pay for the budget! I want to see the USS Mountain Dew! :)

Sadly, how far away are we from doing that?

Actually, that was a relatively new process. Even though Rompin' Rosey was named after FDR, most of the rest until CV67 followed the principal of famous ships or battles (except of course, CV59 - Forrestal.) Personally, naming the CVs after presidents is crass, at best, and a political ploy, which means it's not only crass, but pragmatic. So much for 200 years of tradition unhampered by progress.

Naming a ship after someone who is alive is very lame, in addition to the other reason's you've listed. Pretty soon support ships will be named after senators, congresspersons and govenors.

Other than the super-carrier 'Carl Vinson'. I think somebody there was determined to make sure history remembered him...
