Revenge - Sub vs Sub

Post by ny59giants »

Jan 20 & 21: KBs poor performance over Soerabaja

Subs/ASW:
20th -
S-38 sinks an xAK north of Ternate as she was making her way to Kendari along with the valuable Lima Class AKEs.
Sub vs Sub: SS I-165 attacking SS KVII at 59,108 - near Denpasar

Japanese Ships
SS I-165

Allied Ships
SS KVII, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

SS I-165 launches 4 torpedoes at 2,000 yards

Jan 21 -
RO-68 sinks an AVD at Wake Island.
S-36 hits a DD of KBs, but she survives (and heads for Kendari).

Carriers:
Mini-KB stayed one hex NE of Billiton, but is ordered back to Camrahn Bay for replenishment
KB operates 5 hexes east of Soerabaja in a deep sea hex. After a DD is hit by a sub, I realize it is better to be stationary in a shallow sea hex (better ASW). Ordered to retire to Kendari to replenish (I have 2 Lima Class AKEs headed there).

Malaya: [>:]

Indochina:
20th -
Over Saigon, the usually quite skies see the 4e menace approach.
26(0) Oscar on CAP are no match for 14(0) B-17D Fortress (8 damaged).
Japanese Ships
xAK Kogyo Maru, Bomb hits 1
xAK Hokusho Maru, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires
AS Chogei, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires
xAK Borneo Maru, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires
xAK Teiyo Maru, Bomb hits 1

21st -
3(0) Pete and 8(0) Oscar make vain attempts to slow down 13(0) B-17D Fortress.
Japanese Ships
CL Isuzu, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Kenyo Maru, Bomb hits 1

I love these B-17s when playing the Allies. Now, I curse when they show up.

China:
20th -
Shanghai is hit by 4(0) A-24 Hudson from Wenchow at night. Then, 3(0) SB-III mange to hit a TB in port.
This is another example of the "cat & mouse" game as FatR continue to switch target and then day or night missions.

21st -
Same over Shanghai.

I only have 2 divisions and a regiment in the south until more troops arrive. Long term plans are to bring back a lot, if not all, of my armor to operate in China once my expansion is done.

Philippines:
Same old song at Clark...Lily, Sonia, and Sally hit the AF while another bombardment attack. 16th Division is closing on Manila.

Java:
20th -
KB comes in see a light CAP over Soerabaja.
27(0) Zero escort in 115(0) Kate at 14,000 to see 1(0) Buffalo, 1(1) B-339D, and 4(0) CW-21B Demon on CAP.
Allied Ships
BB Warspite, Bomb hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage
CL Mauritius, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
CA Exeter, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage

This is followed up by attacks on ships not disbanded in port. 6(1) Kate and 20(0) Val.
Allied Ships
xAP Van Landsberge, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires
xAP Camphuys, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires
xAP Siberg
xAP Le Maire, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAP Van Riebeek, Bomb hits 1
xAP Speelman

21st -
27(0) Zero perform a sweep over Soerabaja and find easy picking in the form of 3(0) Buffalo and 8(2) CW-21B Demon.
Afternoon Air attack on Soerabaja , at 56,104

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Allied aircraft losses
CW-21B Demon: 1 destroyed

Allied Ships
xAP Van Rees
CL Durban, Bomb hits 1, on fire
BB Warspite, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Allied ground losses:
6 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

City Attack: 1 x 800 kg AP Bomb
5 x B5N2 Kate bombing from 3000 feet
Port Attack: 1 x 800 kg AP Bomb

4 out of 112 Kates get hits. WTF!! I had ALL my Kates set for 14,000. Does this put them below a threshold that they become glide bombers?? I kept seeing report of "balloons." If so, is 16,000 high enough that they drop their 800kg AP bombs?? Is there specific altitude bands for this operation to happen?? [&:]

Borneo/Billiton:
20th -
At Billiton, 20(0) Zero rise for morning CAP to see the Dutch 4(1) 139WH-3 and 8(2) B-339D make a futile attempt to hit the AF.

21st -
Kuching sees 8(0) Blenheim over Kuching at night.

Celebes/SRA(east):
20th -
Kendari sees its first night raid with 12(0) Blenheim IV.
PB sunk by mines at Manado.
Lautem is captured!!

21st -
Same over Kendari.
The shipping at Lautem is targeted by waves of 3(0) 139WH-3, 9(1) Hudson, and 6(0) B-17s. An xAK is hit once.

New Guinea/Solomons Area: [>:]

Notes:
I know I get a fair number of hits on my AAR, but few postings. I need the answer to Kates altitude issues from someone.
Thanks in advance! [:)]

RE: Revenge - Sub vs Sub

Post by JuanG »

Hey, sorry for not commenting more - I havent found much to say about the earlier postings.

The best way to defend against those B-17 raids is to wipe out the airfields. Any airfield size 4 or larger should be levelled ASAP. Even small amounts of runway and service damage will limit operations, as this will increase ops losses and increase downtime.

As for Kates, they can only level bomb or skip bomb, as I understand. 14,000ft is WAY too high to be honest, unless your just hitting some group troops for training. I run mine at 7,000-9,000ft for naval and port bombing, though I will occasionally drop them down to 5,000ft (they have good LowN skills) if I know the target has weak AA.

Transports engaged before SC TF

Post by ny59giants »

Jan 22 & 23: My transport TF was hit first followed by SC TF. Needless to say, the Transports are no more.

Subs/ASW: [>:]

Some attacks made, but no hits by either side.

Carriers:
Mini-KB is just north of Kuching heading for Camrahn Bay.
KB makes Kendari. Those 2 Lima Class AKEs replenish ALL ships (including torpedoes)!! [&o] Plans are to us the Patrol Zone feature to end up north of Darwin (linger 1 day) and then head to south of Koepang as invasion TF is 1 to 2 days out.
CVL Zuiho (30 plane capacity) is at Kobe and ETA for repairs is 21 days.
CVL Junyo (48 plane capacity) arrives in 15 days.
CVL Unyo (48 plane capacity) arrives in 21 days.
Mini-KB will be able to look after herself very nicely.

Malaya:
22nd -
7 B-17s visit Kuala Lumpur at night and destroy 1 Lily, at night.
The closing down of Singapore's AF begins.
36 Oscar sweep in against 18(1) Buffalo
7 Oscar vs. 4 Buffalo
25 Oscar escort in 14 Sally and 9 Lily and destroy 1 B-17 on ground and get Runway hits 9
The afternoon begins with 18 Oscar dancing with 4 Buffalo
14 Oscar sweeps aside 1(1) Buffalo
45 Nell (14 damaged) hit the AF (Airbase hits 1 & Runway hits 5)

23rd -
10 Zero, 22 Ki-43-Ib Oscar, & 35 Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweep in from 3 different AFs. 5(1) Buffalo are on CAP.

29 Nell (12 damaged) get Airbase hits 2 & Runway hits 5

Not enough damage done. Recon has been flown daily since almost the wars beginning. 4 Recon and 2 Tank are at Malacca and will take empty base next turn cycle.

China:
22nd -
Kweiteh is captured.

Philippines:
Same as before and the turn cycle before that. [;)]

16th Division is at Manila and will capture empty base next turn cycle.

Java:
23rd -
Off the coast, my Nells find some targets. 18 Nell rush past 1 75A-7 Hawk - xAK Liran, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
xAP Rochussen, Torpedo hits 4, and is sunk

Batavia seems to be loaded with his planes. Sweeps to come in soon.

Borneo/Billiton:
23rd -
8 Nate do enough to ruin the aim of 18 139WH-3 that they are unable to hit the AF during the night at Billiton.
The second wave is made up of 11 Blenheim IV vs 6 Nate. Again, no damage done. [:)]
The final wave faces 5 Nate vs 4 Blenheim I. AF intact and finished the turn cycle close to a level 2.

Celebes/SRA(east):
22nd -
Kendari has 6 Hudsons visit during the night and does not hit the AF.

23rd -
Kendari has 3 Hudson visit again at night and get 2 Runway hits.

Rabaul sees 3 CA & 3 CL bombard the base. This is the second time this has happened. Having Nell/Betty do Naval Search is nice, but you need to make sure their experience in this area is good enough to sees ships headed their way.

Notes: FatR stated he lost over 1/2 months worth of B-17s which is good news.
